Linux support needs to be broken into subtasks, as Linux has no unified display management API. Some initial thoughts on subtasks:

1. X11 (xrandr) - Most mature, covers legacy setups
2. Wayland - wlroots compositors (Sway, river, etc.)
   • wlr-output-management-unstable-v1 protocol
3. Wayland - Hyprland - wlroots-based but hyprctl IPC required for headless display creation
   • Large userbase, especially among Sunshine users
   • Well-documented, stable IPC
   • Headless display creation extremely easy. Hyprland also a common target for gamers.
4. Wayland - KDE Plasma - kde-output-management-v2 protocol
5. Wayland - GNOME/Mutter - DBus API (org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig)
6. DRM/KMS - Headless/TTY scenarios

X11, Hyprland, and wlroots would likely cover the majority of Sunshine's Linux userbase.

I can share notes on setting up headless displays in Hyprland if anyone is seeking this.
