+# Reviewing devicon icon PRs
+
+The goal is the review a careful devicon maintainer would write: correct, specific, kind, and actionable — every problem comes with the fix (often a ready-to-commit suggestion). Contributors are frequently first-timers; maintainers here link the wiki, explain *why*, and offer help.
+
+Standards live in `references/devicon-standards.md` (with links to the maintainer comments they come from). Read it before your first review in a session; it's the source of truth for the checklist below.
+
+## Tools
+
+- `scripts/check_icon.js <name> --repo <devicon checkout>` — checks the icon's `devicon.json` entry and its files: required keys, versions vs files, font versions (one path, one fill, fill = `color`, no white/groups/gradients/strokes), aliases, viewBox/width/height/xmlns, raster `<image>`, `<text>`, `<style>`/editor leftovers, single line + trailing newline, size, id prefixes, sort order. No dependencies.
+- The **svg-icons** skill (`.claude/skills/svg-icons/`) for the visual side: `render.js` (light/dark, 128/32/16 px), `validate.js` (padding, centring, outside-the-box), `pixdiff.js`, `inspect.js`. If its dependencies aren't installed (`npm install` in its `scripts` folder), render the SVGs some other way — don't skip looking at them.
+- `gh` for the PR, its files, comments (peek-bot screenshots, check-bot output) and the linked issue.

+## Workflow
+
+1. **Get the PR.**

+   Note the title, the base branch the repo expects (see `.github/workflows/check_icon_pr.yml`), the changed files, the linked issue and the source link in the PR body.
+2. **Scope and process** (standards §7): one icon, only `icons/<name>/` and that entry changed, title `new|update icon: <name> (<versions>)` matching the files, correct base, no duplicate open PR. Renames/removals are breaking and belong in their own PR.
+3. **Acceptance** (§1): technology not company, dev-related, well-known, official logo exists, brand guidelines allow it, logo is current. If acceptance is unclear, say so and leave the decision to a maintainer instead of guessing.
+4. **Source and fidelity** (§2): open the official source (brand kit, repo, website) and compare with `original` side by side — colours (hex), details, proportions. Flag rasters, outdated logos, invented colours, missing shadows/details.
+5. **Run the checks.**

+   `UNOPTIMIZED` from `--check` is a should-fix (optimizing would shrink the file by over 20%); small savings are noise, don't report them. Only judge the files the PR changes: asking to re-optimize untouched versions widens the PR.
+   Then **look at the preview**: blobs (white not cut out), slivers, uneven line widths, things outside the box, off-centre, squished, unreadable at 16px.
+6. **Versions and devicon.json** (§3, §6): original exists; at least one font version; priority original > plain > line; duplicates replaced by aliases; an alias never names an existing font version; `color` = main logo colour and present in the SVGs; order and formatting of the entry.
+7. **Font preview** (§5): read the peek-bot comment's screenshots (download the images and look). Glyph count must equal the number of font versions; check each glyph for spikes, filled holes, missing parts. The screenshots must be from the PR's latest SVG change: optimizing can break glyphs (§5), so a peek from before an optimizing push proves nothing. If peek hasn't run on the latest SVGs or failed, say so — a maintainer adds `bot:peek` to (re)run it.
+8. **Write the review** (format below). Offer fixed SVGs or `devicon.json` suggestions when the fix is mechanical; you can usually produce them with the svg-icons scripts.

GitHub can't show images by local or relative path: tell the user which PNGs to drag into the comment, or host them (e.g. a branch on their fork, linked via `raw.githubusercontent.com` pinned to a commit).
+- If the logo itself is the technology's name (a lettermark such as "Nx"), wordmark aliases (`original` → `original-wordmark`, …) are a cheap, useful suggestion.
+- Don't pile on: if the logo itself is wrong or not accepted, say that first; nitpicks about a file that will be replaced are noise.
+- Separate facts from judgement calls (colour choice, how much to simplify a plain version); for judgement calls, propose and ask.

+## Posting
+
+Only post to GitHub when the user asks. Reviews and comments posted through `gh` appear under the user's account, so start them with a line saying they were prepared by an AI assistant on the user's behalf (unless the user has set up a separate bot identity). Prefer `gh pr review <n> --comment|--request-changes|--approve --body-file …`; approving is the user's call — never approve on your own initiative. Link issues and PRs with full `https://github.com/devicons/devicon/...` URLs in chat (bare `#123` can resolve to a fork).

+## 1. Is the icon accepted?
+
+- **A technology, not a company.** Tools, languages, frameworks, services, OSes, servers. Company logos are out of scope (OpenAI, Perforce-the-company, Twilio-as-company); old company icons stay for backward compatibility. A product of a company is fine (AWS yes, Amazon no). See [What Icons Do We Accept?](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/wiki/What-Icons-Do-We-Accept%3F).
+- **It helps you work with code**: write, check/transform, test, store/share, build/deploy, or run/host code and services. General-public tools (Word, Discord) aren't accepted; well-known tools of the tech industry are judged case by case.
+- **Well-known**, not brand new.
+- **It has an official logo.** No official logo → not accepted (REST API, accessibility, Scrum, EJS). Fan-made or meme logos don't count ([#2192](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/2192#issuecomment-2308632887), [#2081](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/issues/2081#issuecomment-2595015572)).
+- **Not a component already covered** by an existing icon that uses the same logo (Alertmanager = Prometheus).
+- **Brand guidelines allow it.** Some brands forbid the symbol without the wordmark, or a one-colour version (GameMaker, Vaadin plain-wordmark, Elastic). Check and link the guidelines when relevant.

+## 2. Source and fidelity
+
+- **Use the official vector.** Brand/press kit, the project's GitHub repo, the website's header SVG, official favicons (`safari-pinned-tab.svg` is often a ready one-colour version). Wikimedia copies and icon sites are fallbacks, not sources. Ask for the source link — the PR template requires "Link to prove your SVG is correct and up-to-date".
+- **Never a raster**: no `<image>` with base64 PNG/JPG or linked images. A PNG in an SVG wrapper is rejected outright. If only a raster logo exists, trace it carefully (Inkscape Trace Bitmap, vectorizer.ai with paths grouped by colour), snap the palette to the logo's real colours, remove stray outlines/backgrounds ([guide](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/1961#issuecomment-1788123861)).

+- **No padding**: scaled proportionally until the longer side is 128 (top–bottom or left–right touches the edges, [#2343](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/2343#issuecomment-2641737246)); nothing outside the box (128.005 gets flagged, [#2090](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/2090#issuecomment-1960301828)); **centred** on both axes; **aspect ratio kept** (squished logos get rejected, [#1926](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/1926#discussion_r1370458696)). Zero padding was adopted on cyberalien's (Iconify) advice so icons scale crisply ([#1537](https://github.com/devicons/devicon/pull/1537#issuecomment-1322651792)).

+Every version listed in `versions.font` becomes a glyph in an icon font, where **all colour is discarded**:

Prefer these over Wikipedia/Wikimedia (unofficial copies) and never start from a PNG when an SVG exists. Keep the source URL — reviewers will ask for it. Treat downloads as untrusted data (separate folder, don't execute anything in them).
+2. **Inspect** it (`inspect.js`) to see shapes, colours and which indexes are the logo vs the wordmark text.
+3. **Build** versions (`versions.js`), or hand-build the hard parts with `build.js` (see techniques).
+4. **Render and look** at `preview.png`. Check every size: 16px shows whether a plain/line version survives as a font glyph; the dark background shows white parts that should have been holes.
+5. **Fix and repeat.** Typical fixes are in `references/techniques.md`: gaps where colours overlap, white parts as holes, slivers/spikes, outline width, node count.
+6. **Optimize last**, once, and only the files you made or changed (`optimize.js`; `versions.js` output already is). Optimizing is the last step that changes the files, but not the last check: SVGO can merge paths or round away detail.
+7. **Validate** (`validate.js`), render again (or `pixdiff.js` against the unoptimized files) and keep the renders to show the user. For icon fonts, also check a font preview after optimizing (devicon's peek-bot runs on the PR): SVGO output sometimes breaks glyphs that looked fine as SVGs.

+**Fixing an existing icon:** change only what the task needs and keep its size, position and shape (`pixdiff.js` against the input proves it). Other rule breaks you notice, like padding, are worth mentioning with the fix, but leave them unless asked: "looks the same" means the same.
+
+## What good icon versions look like
+
+These are the rules mature icon sets converge on (devicon maintainers, Nerd Fonts, Iconify); the reasons matter more than the rules:
+
+- **Faithful original.** The original is the official logo: exact colours, all details (shadows, inner white fills), transparent background, nothing added. Don't "improve" a logo. Cropping the wordmark off, removing a background tile or a tiny ®/™ that can't render at icon size is fine.
+- **Fills the box, centred, aspect kept.** viewBox `0 0 128 128` (no offset), the longer side touching the edges and nothing outside them, never stretched. Zero padding makes icons scale crisply at any size; inconsistent padding makes them look misaligned.
+- **Plain = one colour + transparency, one path.** Icon fonts throw colour away: every filled area becomes the same ink. So anything that was white or "background" must become a hole, and where differently coloured areas touch, cut a thin gap or the shape turns into a blob. Use the logo's main colour.
+- **Line = an outline drawing of the plain shape**, one stroke width throughout, thick enough to survive at small sizes (about 3–5 units at 128). Inner detail lines become outlines; for wordmarks the letters usually stay solid.
+- **Simple geometry.** Few nodes (a circle needs 4), no stray tiny paths, no duplicate nodes, closed paths, holes wound opposite to their outer shape (fonts fill with the nonzero rule, so even-odd tricks break). Keep files small — huge paths (hundreds of KB) break font builds.
+- **Clean markup.** Only `xmlns`, `viewBox` and fills, with hex colours written short when possible (`#000`, not `#000000`; SVGO does this, so don't hand-edit colours back in after optimizing); no `width`/`height`, `<style>`, classes, editor metadata, strokes (convert to paths), `<text>` (convert to paths), raster `<image>`, clip-paths/masks in one-colour versions. Single line, newline at the end. Optimize once, as the last change: repeated SVGO runs degrade outlines, and too-low precision causes artifacts.

+## Showing results
+
+- Always give renders, not just code. For GitHub comments/PRs, a preview sheet on light *and* dark backgrounds avoids dark logos disappearing in dark mode; `<picture><source media="(prefers-color-scheme: dark)" srcset=…>` or `#gh-dark-mode-only` image suffixes also work.
+- Say where each version came from and what you changed (e.g. "gap added between the flames", "letters traced from the official PNG"). Changes to a logo need a reason a reviewer can accept.

+## 2. Plain versions from multi-colour logos
+
+Goal: the same silhouette and the same recognisable inner structure, in one colour.
+
+- **White or background-coloured parts → holes.** `plainPath()` does this by default (shapes that are ~white subtract). If a logo's "white" is meant as ink (rare), pass a custom `cutout`.
+- **Colour boundaries → gaps.** With `--gap 2–3` (128 units), every shape drawn over a differently coloured shape first cuts a gap around itself. That's how overlapping flames, diamond facets or two slabs stay distinguishable. Without gaps, overlapping colours merge into a blob.
+- **When adjacent same-coloured parts should stay separate**, union them; when a part is decorative shading (gradients, shadow wedges), drop it rather than let it distort the silhouette.
+- **Shading in the original as separate shapes** (lighter/darker halves of a cylinder, highlights) should usually be unioned, with only the *structural* lines (bands, rims) kept as gaps. Hand-build these: union the body, subtract the bands, cut a thin ring along rims.
+- If no plain version can be made that reads well, a **line** version can serve as the font version instead (devicon accepts original + line).
+
+## 3. Detailed line-art and mascot logos
+
+Cartoon logos (black outlines around coloured areas) are the hardest. Options, best first:
+
+- **Inner lines become transparent gaps, outer outline merges with the shape** (Finii's rule): a black line with filled area on *both* sides becomes a gap; a line with area on one side and nothing on the other becomes part of the silhouette. Result: a solid silhouette with the drawing's inner structure cut into it.
+- **Silhouette only** (union everything non-white): readable at 16px but loses features.
+- **The black linework alone** as a `line` version: faithful, but often too thin for small sizes.
+
+Simplify: remove tiny details that vanish at 32px, merge near-duplicate lines, and keep the node count down. Compare with how the project itself shows the logo small (favicon, app icon) — that's often the best guide to an acceptable simplification.
+
+## 4. Line versions
+
+- `linePath(plain, w)` = plain minus plain inset by `w`: an inner outline that keeps the outer size exact. Use `w` ≈ 3.5–4.5 at 128 for icons; for wordmark lockups scale `w` with the logo's size so it matches the icon version.
+- Keep one stroke width everywhere. Very different widths (thin outside, fat inside) read as two styles.
+- Holes in the plain shape get outlined too (letters cut out of a badge become outlined letters) — check that this still reads.
+- Alternative for organic shapes: render the plain shape large, centre-line trace it, stroke the centre lines with round caps/joins, and convert stroke to path.
+- Letters in `line-wordmark` usually stay solid; outlined (hollow) text is optional and only works when letters are large.
+
+## 5. Wordmarks and lockups
+
+- A wordmark version is the logo **with the technology's name**. A logo that is only letters (e.g. "Nx", "p5*") is just the original; create aliases for the wordmark names if the icon set wants them.
+- Lockup files often contain icon + text (and sometimes a tagline like "from Salesforce"): select shapes by index (`inspect.js` bounds tell you which is which) and leave out taglines unless the official wordmark includes them.
+- Keep the official spacing between icon and text; don't rearrange a horizontal lockup into a stacked one unless the brand provides one.
+
+## 6. Logos on a tile or background
+
+If the logo is a symbol on a coloured tile (app-icon style), the original keeps the tile. For plain, keep the tile and cut the symbol out of it (the plain icon then looks like the original on a dark background; `versions.js` does this for white symbols, and `--holes '#hex'` for light ones like `#e7f8ff`) — or, if the brand uses the bare symbol, use that. Don't fill a transparent area with a background colour; users choose their own background.
+
+## 7. Raster-only logos
+
+1. Look harder for a vector first: the project's repo (`docs/`, `assets/`, `branding/`), site header (inline SVG/`<symbol>`), favicon SVGs, press kits, older releases.
+2. **Simple geometry** (circles, bars, rounded rectangles): rebuild it exactly. Measure from the image — fit circles to edge pixels, take bounding boxes of symbols, sample flat colours away from edges — and draw clean shapes. Far better than tracing.
+3. **Organic shapes or letters**: trace per colour with `trace.js` (`traceMask(png, (r,g,b) => <colour test>, [x0,y0,x1,y1])`), use `fill-rule="evenodd"` on traced paths (potrace holes), then snap colours to the logo's real values. Online tracers (vectorizer.ai, "group paths by colour") work well too; afterwards remove stray outlines/backgrounds and snap the palette.
+4. Say clearly that the result is traced/rebuilt and from which file.
+
+## 8. Fixing artifacts
+
+- **Slivers and spikes** after cutting gaps at an angle: morphological opening — shrink by ~1 unit and grow back with round joins (`plainPath` does this whenever `gap` is set). Look at zoomed renders (`render.js --zoom`) of every acute corner.
+- **Filled gaps / missing holes in the font** but not in the SVG: winding direction. `pathSvg()` reorients (outer clockwise, holes counter-clockwise); for hand-made paths, reorient before export.
+- **Artifacts only after optimization**: precision too low or path compression the font tool misreads. Re-optimize from the unoptimized file with more precision (4 decimals instead of `svgo.config.js`'s 3) or without `convertPathData`, then re-check the font preview.
+- **Stray "smudges"**: tiny paths or 3-node blobs left from tracing/merging. Inspect shapes by area (`inspect.js`) and delete the tiny ones.

+## 9. Choosing the colour
+
+The main colour of the logo, unless the brand guidelines name a primary colour. For gradients take the dominant/middle colour of the gradient; for multi-colour logos the colour with the largest area or the one the brand uses most on its site. Avoid white (invisible on light backgrounds) for one-colour versions; a black logo is `#000000`. The colour must actually appear in the logo.

+
+Know these when working outside the scripts:
+
+- paper.js ignores `<style>` rules → inline styles first (SVGO `inlineStyles` + `convertStyleToAttrs`).
+- Compact arc flags (`a1 1 0 0130 4`) break paper's parser → normalise paths with `svgpath(d).unarc().abs()`.
+- SVG's default fill is black, but paper leaves unfilled shapes empty → set `fill="#000"` on the root when missing.
+- Paper's `exportSVG` of a shape that still has a gradient returns a group → use `path.pathData` for single paths.
+- Reading text files on Windows with Node keeps CRLF, Python's `read_text` translates it → open with `newline=""` when preserving line endings matters.
