ogar-rbac: group-to-role grants as the authority's versioned policy - #355
Conversation
Which roles a directory group confers is policy, decided by the authority, not directory state. group_policy::GroupRolePolicy is an append-only log of Grant/Revoke changes, each its own PolicyVersion (numbered by the log alone, independent of directory versions) and each carrying the GrantProvenance it was made with (by, evidence, at_ms). as_of(v) reads the state at any version. The state keeps unread and empty apart: roles_of returns None for a group the policy never named and Some([]) for one whose grants were all revoked, so a consumer never infers roles from missing evidence. A change that would not change the state (grant of a standing role, revoke of an absent one) is refused and not recorded. Groups are named by objectGUID (ogar-dir-core, no deps of its own). 📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This change adds a new, self-contained group-role policy log. It can be merged with one small follow-up: refuse grants to the all-zero "absent" group ID. Without that check, a group that is missing its ID could pick up roles. Pre-merge checks |

120-120: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winStop rebuilding the full state on every
apply.Every call to
applyrunsstate_at(self.entries.len()). That call replays the whole log into newBTreeMaps and clones every standingGrantProvenance(twoStrings each). The no-op check only needs one fact: whether the latest change for(group, role)was aGrant. As written, recording N changes costs O(N²) time and allocates heavily. For a long-lived authority log, this cost keeps growing. A reverse scan answers the same question in O(N) with no allocation and no cloning.

Review (Codex P2): apply rebuilt the whole state from the log for every change, so N changes cost O(N^2) work and allocations. The policy now keeps the head state, updated by the same step() a replay uses, so the two cannot disagree; as_of(head) returns it, older versions still replay. The provenance test also checks the cached head against a fresh replay. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01G22yT6htkcdyXsihxxXdrg
Review (CodeRabbit): Guid128::default() means "absent". A consumer that resolves an unread objectGUID to it would pick up whatever was granted to zero, i.e. roles inferred from missing evidence. apply now refuses any change naming it (PolicyError::AbsentGroup) before recording. Test the_absent_group_is_refused: red before, green after. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01G22yT6htkcdyXsihxxXdrg
