D-KEY16 W1+W2: parity for the stride-16 key match, and a pricing probe - #356
Conversation
…tewise reference (D-KEY16-1) New check group (0x73x / 0x74x / 0x750): strides 16/20/32/512, first offsets 0..15, tails 0/1/3/4/5/15/16/17/63/64/65/130, care masks with bits in bytes 12..16 alone and mid-register, tight buffers (no slack past the last record), plus a per-byte 12..16 sensitivity sweep with a hand-written expected mask. Green on the unchanged kernel; the kernel is not touched. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01G22yT6htkcdyXsihxxXdrg
…e 16-byte key match (D-KEY16-2) Arm A is the shipped kernel; arm B (stride 16) and arm C (AVX-512 64-bit gather, strides > 16, cfg-gated) are prototyped inside the probe only. The kernel is not touched. Answers are asserted bit-identical across arms before any timing; median of 101 runs; numbers recorded in the doc comment as PROVISIONAL (shared, non-quiet host). 306-322: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winRun the timed arms in alternating order.
The probe always times arm A first. Arm B or arm C always runs second. Clock frequency, thermal state and cache state change over a run. A fixed order therefore biases every ratio in one direction. This matters most for the stride-512 rows. There, the reported A/C ratios are 0.92 to 1.00, so a small systematic bias can change the conclusion. The PR says the W3/W4 decisions will reuse this probe on a quiet host. Fix the order before that re-run.
Interleave the samples per repetition. Alternate which arm runs first, or randomize the order. Take a median for each arm.

fn paired_median_ns(mut a: impl FnMut(), mut x: impl FnMut()) -> (f64, f64) { for _ in 0..WARMUP { a(); x(); } let (mut ta, mut tx) = (Vec::with_capacity(REPS), Vec::with_capacity(REPS)); for r in 0..REPS { let mut time = |f: &mut dyn FnMut()| { let t = Instant::now(); f(); t.elapsed().as_nanos() as f64 }; if r % 2 == 0 { ta.push(time(&mut a)); tx.push(time(&mut x)); } else { tx.push(time(&mut x)); ta.push(time(&mut a)); } } let med = |v: &mut Vec<f64>| { v.sort_by(|p, q| p.partial_cmp(q).unwrap()); v[REPS / 2] }; (med(&mut ta), med(&mut tx)) }Based on learnings: "When a benchmark suite always executes competing implementations in a fixed sequential order … flag this … mitigate by alternating or randomizing execution order per sample."

Not a gate decision. The plan requires the W3 threshold (B ≥ 1.5× A at stride 16 on both tiers) and the W4 threshold (C ≥ 1.2× A at strides 32 and 512 on avx512) to be measured on a quiet machine. These runs were not quiet. One thing held in both passes: gather at stride 512 with 65,536 rows does not beat the current kernel (0.92–1.00). No kernel change follows from this PR.
