Why the change

A user left Bots running unattended, switched out of Bot mode to install a plugin, came back, and the Bot DM showed only 消息加载失败:invalid channelTimeline response with no messages.

Issue / Discussion: user report in the project thread (no GitHub issue).

Special things to note

  • Root cause: loadTimelinePage rejected the whole page when any single entry failed the client's strict parseChannelMessage. The live path dropped that same message silently (parseFrame / parseJournalEntry), so while the DM was open nothing looked wrong. But the drop left a hole in the revision sequence, so the next frame triggered recover, which reloads the timeline. On remount the same page load runs again. One unreadable message was enough to blank the Channel for good.
  • Which message it was in the user's profile could not be confirmed from here. I instrumented the core store and ran all core and plugin tests (about 7,100 projected message lists) through the client parser, and nothing failed. So current core output parses fine in tests. The likely trigger is version skew: system notices that arrived recently (toolAutoApproval and toolAutoApprovalPause, which unattended auto-approval writes) reaching a client bundle that predates them, or a stored shape that only exists in that profile. The fix covers the whole class rather than one shape.
  • Behavior: a committed message that still has id, at and body but fails the strict parse now stays in place as a plain-text message. It keeps its author (system if the author is unreadable) and its channelRevision, and logs one console.warn. A page whose entries are not messages at all still throws invalid channelTimeline response.
  • Merge risk: low and client-only. parseChannelMessage itself is unchanged, so the roster preview, search and history keep their current strictness. Revert the commit to roll back.
  • Verification:
    • New packages/client/test/channel-timeline-unreadable.test.ts: 2 of its 3 tests fail on main and all 3 pass with this change.
    • tsc --noEmit is clean.
    • Client test suite: 228 files pass. client-observer.test.ts fails to bundle node:sqlite both with and without this change, so that failure is not from this PR.
    • Not run: a real DSH Host repro, because I don't have the user's profile.
  • CI test plan: affected (client only). No new config files and no tests that read repo files.
  • Out of scope: in the screenshot, the row of Bot tab chips overflows the header. That is a separate layout issue and unrelated to this error.

Change outline

loadTimelinePage / parseJournalEntry / channel-live parseFrame
before: parseChannelMessage(entry) → undefined ⇒ page throws / frame dropped
  after:  parseStoredChannelMessage(entry) → strict parse ?? { id, at, author, body, format: 'text', channelRevision }

No visual change for messages the client can read.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unreadable messages in bot direct messages now appear as plain text while the rest of the channel loads, instead of causing an “invalid channelTimeline response” error.

…he whole timeline

One committed message the client could not parse (a kind written by a newer
Host, or a field it rejects) made loadTimelinePage throw
"invalid channelTimeline response", so reopening a long-running Bot DM showed
no messages at all. Live frames and journal entries dropped the same message,
which broke the revision sequence and sent recovery back into the failing load.

Timeline pages, journal entries and live frames now keep such a message in
place as a plain-text entry with its id, time, author and body.

📝 Walkthrough

The client now falls back to plain-text messages when stored message data fails normal parsing but has valid required fields. Timeline, journal, and live-frame parsing use this fallback. Tests cover retained messages, revision handling, warnings, and rejection of entries without an ID.

Changes: Stored message parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stored-message fallback
packages/client/src/client/bridge.ts
Added a parser that returns normally parsed messages unchanged. For qualifying stored values, it creates a text-formatted message with a parsed author or system author and preserves only a valid channel revision.
Timeline, journal, and live-frame integration
packages/client/src/client/bridge.ts, packages/client/src/client/channel-live.ts, packages/client/test/channel-timeline-unreadable.test.ts, changes/1887-unreadable-channel-message.md
Timeline, journal, and live-frame parsing now use the fallback parser. Tests check retained entries, revisions, warning behavior, and rejection when an entry lacks an ID. The changelog describes the unreadable-message case.

2606-2606: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Limit duplicate warnings for repeated parses.

parseStoredChannelMessage warns once per fallback occurrence, not once per message ID. The same unreadable message can be parsed during timeline loads, journal replay, and live updates, producing duplicate console entries.

If one warning per message ID is intended, use state scoped to the owning client or warning lifecycle. Do not use an unbounded module-level Set, which shares state across callers and retains IDs until module unload.

Update parseStoredChannelMessage so repeated fallback parses warn at most once
per message ID, using deduplication state scoped to the owning client or warning

IDs indefinitely.

46-46: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a live-frame regression test for unreadable messages.

The existing live tests emit only strictly readable messages. The new timeline and journal tests do not exercise parseFrame or mountChannelLive.

If strict parsing returns in parseFrame, the live message is dropped. The conversation does not receive the message or advance its revision. Add a channel/message test that expects the valid message as format: 'text'.

Add a live `channel/message` regression test around `parseFrame` and
`mountChannelLive` that emits a message with an unknown field and verifies it is
delivered with `format: 'text'` and advances the conversation revision. Keep the
test focused on the unreadable-message fallback.
