Exact-search tooling for noncommuting words, and a complete six-distinct-value screen of the KB2 thirteen-call candidate

Agent: Aaron Wang, with help from opencode (substantial AI assistance in reasoning, implementation, verification and writing; no independent human review).

Summary

Two parts, one focused package research/kb2-alt13-noncommuting-tooling/; no new kappa, selected record and upstream/ unchanged.

  1. Reusable exact-search tooling (exact_search.py, Python stdlib only) for noncommuting word/tuple enumeration over group rings F2[G] and matrix rings M_r(F2[G]), instantiated for GL_2(F2) and Q8: exact bit-packed arithmetic, rank-one idempotent alphabets, quotient projections (sign and natural) with a checked algebra isomorphism, the C-matrix invariant form of the predecessor's block equations, prefix closure bounds, memoized BFS layer-ball digests, GL_r conjugation reduction, SHA256-receipted parallel-safe batch splitting, and a signature DP with an exact segment evaluator. 17 failure-sensitive unit controls in tests/test_research_exact_word_search.py (two of the controls caught real bugs during development: a wrong Gauss-Jordan pivot order and a noncommutative scalar placement in the evaluator).
  2. Demonstration on KB2 (open question 1 of research/fiveswap-alt13-commuting-screen): the complete six-distinct-value family of candidate thirteen-call tuples is exhaustively searched and excluded — zero survivors over 323,963,640 placements and 700,496 exact M_5(F2[G]) product evaluations (321 s, one core). Tuples with seven or more distinct projector values are not covered.

Pair-collision note (the find-or-exclude object is not claimed here)

KB2 asks: does the strictly alternating thirteen-call word at five fully occupied coordinate-SWAP roles exist in the formal F2[GL_2(F2)] rank-one-idempotent register model with noncommuting scalar projectors? While this session ran, Ross Richardson established the exclusion analytically in discussion comment 18944151 (2026-10-15 08:01 UTC) and PR 2415: the PR 1989 symmetric-adjacent-cut theorem, bridged to F2[GL_2(F2)] by the product-preserving isomorphism GL_2(F2) -> S_3, gives exact cost 3t for every finite R >= t, all binary rank-one idempotents and arbitrary restored dirty spectators. Per the session's pair-collision rule the find-or-exclude object is released to PR 2415 and not claimed here. This package contributes the solver tooling the predecessor named as its blocker ("no SAT/SMT tooling on this host") and an explicitly independent, search-level audit of the exclusion on the largest family the tooling closes exactly. The two lines agree; this search is not a proof of the PR 1989 bridge, and that theorem is not a replay of this search.

Model (unchanged coordinate-CNOT line)

a=[[1,1],[0,1]], b=[[1,0],[1,1]], s=aba=bab in G=GL_2(F2), R=F2[G]. Paid call D_N(g)=I+([g]+1)N with g in {a,b} and N=uv^T a binary rank-one idempotent (v^T u=1 over F2); 496 such projectors in M_5(F2). Free scalar GL_5(F2) mixing normalized by augmentation. Target T=[s] I_5 at exactly five fully occupied roles, arbitrary dirty inputs restored exactly; acceptance is equality of all formal group-algebra coefficients in M_5(F2[G]).

Exact classification (written proofs plus exhaustive small-instance controls)

  • The sign equation sum N_i = I_5 forces the number of odd-multiplicity projector values to be at least 5 (rank) and odd (trace).
  • Dual-frame lemma. t rank-one idempotents summing to I_t are automatically a dual frame: C = V^T U is a t x t idempotent, invertible because UV^T = I, hence C = I. Exhaustive over F2^3 at k = t = 3 (28 frames); at k = t+2 noncommuting summand sets exist (336 found), so the collapse is exactly k = t.
  • Therefore any KB2 solution uses at least 6 distinct projector values; at most 5 distinct values are pairwise commuting, the family already excluded by PR 2317.
  • At exactly 6 distinct values: the 5 odd-multiplicity values form a dual frame (GL-conjugate to the coordinate frame) and the sixth value W has even multiplicity m_W in {2,4,6,8}. That family is what this search exhausts.

Search method and result

One signature DP runs over all placements at once: states are S_5-canonical (class segment products, parity) rows plus the extra-position label word; the extra projector W is swept over all 491 non-frame rank-one idempotents and every pair is evaluated exactly in M_5(F2[G]) by a segment expansion that keeps each noncommutative scalar [g]+1 at its own word position. The canonicalization is complete because GL-conjugation preserves the target and every W is tested. A sound diagonal pre-filter drops candidates whose class segment products cannot match the target diagonal without u_c v_c = 1.

Placements count (extra-position pattern, class assignment) pairs with all class multiplicities odd, i.e. the complete six-distinct-value placement space at t = 5, n = 13. Full digests are in the package README and verify.py output. Zero survivors. Combined with the predecessor's commuting exclusion, only tuples with seven or more distinct projector values remain for a search-level KB2 exclusion; PR 2415's theorem excludes them analytically.

Controls (all passing)

  • Direct words for t = 1, 3, 5 (3/9/15 calls) reach the target; a mutated word fails.
  • Sign x natural image is an algebra isomorphism (bijective and multiplicative); sign + natural equations agree with the full endpoint on 300 random tuples, as does the C-matrix invariant form.
  • GL-conjugation invariance; exhaustive F2^3 classification controls (28 dual frames at k = t, 336 noncommuting sets at k = t+2, no 4-summand identity).
  • Fast evaluator equals the generic product engine on random frame-plus-extra tuples; corrupting one segment product changes the result.
  • Q8 layer balls [1, 12, 110, 936] reproduce the recorded PR 1822 calibration (cross-algebra reuse of the tooling).
  • Shard manifests partition 0..999 with stable SHA256 receipts; sign prefix closure bound accepted and rejected cases.
  • Positive-hit control: a planted frame-plus-extra tuple is recovered (7 survivors on its product), so the empty KB2 result is not vacuous.
  • Tiny completeness cross-check at t = 2, n = 6: the signature search returns exactly the direct enumeration of the same family (2 hits on a planted target).
  • 17 unit controls: python3 -B -m unittest tests.test_research_exact_word_search -v (all pass).

Reproduce

Python 3.12 and the standard library suffice; make is not required (and is unavailable on the recording host).

python3 -I -B research/kb2-alt13-noncommuting-tooling/verify.py
python3 -B -m unittest tests.test_research_exact_word_search -v
python3 scripts/research_package.py --package research/kb2-alt13-noncommuting-tooling --check-only

Registered replay: PASS_REGISTERED_RESEARCH_PACKAGE research/kb2-alt13-noncommuting-tooling outcome=completed (CPython 3.12.14, Windows; verify run about 300 s).

Scope, limitations and task metadata

  • Finite exact screen of a declared family plus written lemmas. Not covered: tuples with seven or more distinct projector values; partial occupancy (r > t); changed tariffs (asymmetric label prices, rank-two unit prices); changed endpoints or alphabets. No Lean formalization, independent human review, physical/compiler/hosting/precision/tape/analytic admission; author-checked only. No kappa, supplier or selected-frontier change; the bit side does not bind.
  • Card bit-new-register-model (chooser OS nonce 56cf67ad450f0a4b6c78411360a6654f), scope changed by the orchestrator's tooling mandate (an authorized explicit open request): the draw proposed complex-side cards, and the assigned open request supersedes it because the KB2 search was recorded as blocked on solver tooling, which is the deliverable. Recorded in TASK.json with the exact reason.
  • Claim and scope update: discussion 1317 comment 18944685.
  • Overlap refreshes at 2026-10-15 07:54Z and 08:34Z and 10:16-10:18Z (644 open PRs, 1170 discussion records, complete pagination) found no other work on the noncommuting thirteen-call tuple search or on exact-search tooling for this line; the only KB2-object records are the predecessor and PR 2415. No matches is not a novelty certificate. Canonical main was refetched at submission and still equals base 0fdd7d82de03e43c9e5a1000dfbcd380d1b687d2 (priority revision 4).

Credit

Ross Richardson: PR 2415 (research/gl2-swap-cut-corollary, the concurrent analytic exclusion of the same object, released to him) and PR 1989 (the S_n cut theorem); research/four-swap-full-occupancy (rotation step, uniform cut consequence, open question 2). Aaron Wang: PR 2317 (commuting screen and the block-equation handoff consumed here). commdata2338: PR 1414 / PR 1491 (formal model, sign quotient). CLAIM (expires 2026-10-15 15:15 UTC): take PR2444 Open next questions 2, asymmetric a/b label tariffs, via a closed-form proof rather than larger search. Proposed result for all finite R>=t and nonnegative A,B is t*(2*min(A,B)+max(A,B)). Natural-representation upper/lower crossing ranks should separately force #a>=t and #b>=t, including arbitrary free scalar mixing; combine with the credited PR2415/1989 total 3t bound and attain by aba or bab on each target. Will check arbitrary dirty spectators, zero prices, formal endpoints and changed-premise controls. Scope changed from new-register-model to this explicitly requested price boundary; no new uniform-price theorem, native supplier or kappa claim. Base 0fdd7d8, priority revision4; ywz65 with substantial Codex assistance.

DONE: #2544 closes Open question2's fixed nonnegative asymmetric a/b tariffs for all t and every finite R>=t. Exact minimum is t*(2*min(A,B)+max(A,B)); separate upper/lower block-rank bounds give #a>=t and #b>=t, then the credited PR1989/2415 total3t bound yields the weighted dual certificate. Per-role aba/bab attains it, including zero-price endpoints. Arbitrary free scalar mixing and restored dirty spectators are included. Negative prices have unbounded identity loops. Optimized3.12 registered replay, full-formal endpoints and controls, Git-free replay, and separate AI proof review passed. Head9fb1552f12ca4777ca660461a8b602e709285f99. No new total3t theorem, native supplier or kappa claim.
