Closes #174

Problem

nightly-canaries.yml (#171) has been on main since about 17:00 UTC, but GitHub has not registered it. At 21:00 UTC:

  • list_workflows returns five workflows (ci, docs-check, e2e, gitleaks, protected), not this one.
  • GET /actions/workflows/nightly-canaries.yml and its /runs return 404.
  • So workflow_dispatch fails and the 19:00 UTC schedule did not run.

e2e.yml is not on main yet, but it is registered from its pull request runs (#91).

Change

  • A pull_request trigger limited to changes of .github/workflows/nightly-canaries.yml. It is a plain pull_request event, not pull_request_target, so it runs with the top-level contents: read token and no secrets. The run on this PR registers the workflow and runs both canaries before the change merges. Later edits to the canaries get the same check.
  • The report job is the only job with issues: write. It now also requires github.event_name != 'pull_request', so a red PR run never opens or updates the tracking issue; the PR shows the failure itself.
  • The header comment now says what triggers the workflow.

No other workflow, script or package changes. Ordinary PRs do not touch this file, so a red canary still never blocks them.

After merge

I will dispatch the workflow on main (workflow_dispatch) and check that the run completes. That is the issue's second criterion. If either canary fails for reasons unrelated to Bun or typescript@next (missing services, install filters), the fix goes in a follow-up PR.

Verification

  • actionlint 1.7.7 on the edited file: clean
  • tools/test unit tests (including the protected-path list): pass
  • Security review (session review while Approve spend and add ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for the security reviewer agent #95 is pending; .github/workflows/** is protected): the only new trigger is pull_request scoped to this file's path, and the one job with a write permission is excluded on it. Fork PRs get a read-only token in any case.

📝 Walkthrough

The nightly canary workflow now runs on pull requests that change its file, but it does not report failures for pull-request runs. A new test validates SQL migration filenames and checks that migration versions are unique.

Explanation

Issue #174 requires the workflow to appear in Actions and a scheduled or dispatched run to complete. The workflow now has a path-scoped pull_request trigger, and the reported PR run registered the workflow and ran both canaries. The PR description states that the required post-merge scheduled or dispatched run is still pending. The reported Bun failures are specific to Bun's missing Node permission model, and typescript@next passed, so the issue's conditional workflow-fix requirement is not triggered.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The new tools/test/migration-versions.test.ts checks Supabase migration naming and duplicate versions. It does not implement or test the nightly-canary registration, triggers, canary jobs, or PR permission guard required by issue #174. The change is outside the stated workflow-only scope.

First run of the canaries, from this PR (run 38806755203). GitHub registered the workflow (id 386002112), so it shows in the Actions list now.

  • Typecheck on typescript@next: green.
  • Open or update the tracking issue: skipped, as intended on a pull request run.
  • Unit tests on Bun (latest): red, 305 passed, 3 failed, all in apps/extract/test/extract.test.ts, "crove-extract parser process isolation":
    • net:ERR_ACCESS_DENIED expected; the child connected (["connected","fetch:ECONNRESET"]).
    • write and spawn expected ERR_ACCESS_DENIED; got written and spawned.
    • reads and worker expected ERR_ACCESS_DENIED; got ENOENT/read/read and started.

This is the canary doing its job, not a workflow bug. Those tests spawn process.execPath with Node's --permission flags. Under bun --bun, process.execPath is Bun, which has no Node permission model, so the parser sandbox does not exist there. The production image runs crove-extract on Node (node:26-slim), so nothing ships broken. But it means the parser isolation is Node-only by design, and Bun will not change that by itself. Left as is, every scheduled run will be red and comment on the same tracking issue.

#174 asks for workflow fixes only for failures unrelated to Bun, so I am not changing what the canary runs here. The choice for the owner:

  1. Keep the Bun canary for everything that could run on Bun, and leave the Node-only sandbox out. For example, add --exclude apps/extract/test/extract.test.ts to the Bun step, or mark that describe as Node-only in the test with a short reason. The canary then stays a signal for drift.
  2. Keep it as is and accept a red canary plus one tracking issue, closed as "Bun cannot run crove-extract's sandbox".

The red check is not a required check, and it only runs on pull requests that edit this workflow.

Lint, typecheck, test and Invariant suite (from base) failed on e25dbbe with duplicate key value violates unique constraint "schema_migrations_pkey", Key (version)=(20261016200000) already exists. That is the duplicate migration version on main, not this PR. I ported the two commits of the fix, #189, as 83b72a0 and 970bad0; they drop out once #189 merges and this branch is rebased. The red Bun canary is the separate finding in my previous comment.

Verify a scheduled or manual run after merge.

Issue #174 requires one scheduled or workflow_dispatch run to complete. The reported PR run does not satisfy this criterion. Dispatch the workflow after merge and verify completion before closing the issue.

…ters the workflow (#174)

nightly-canaries.yml has been on main since #171 but GitHub never registered
it: list_workflows does not show it, /actions/workflows/nightly-canaries.yml
answers 404, workflow_dispatch fails and the 19:00 UTC schedule did not run.
e2e.yml, not on main yet, is registered from its pull request runs.

A pull_request trigger limited to changes of this file runs the canaries
before an edit merges and registers the workflow. The report job, the only
one with issues: write, never runs on a pull request.
