A host also gets a **Directory Group** tab. Use the tab to set the group of
that host.

### Each directory group is a core group

FOG creates a core group for each directory group. The core group has the
same name and holds the hosts. Assign snapins, printers, modules and power
schedules to that core group on the **Groups** page. Each host in the
directory group then gets them, the same as for any other group.

If another group already has the name, or the name is longer than 50
characters, the core group name ends in ` #<id>`. Example: `Sales #12`.

You can add a host on any page that changes group membership: the
**Directory Group** tab, the **Groups** tab of the host, the **Groups**
page, mass edit, CSV import, registration or the API. The rules are the
same on each page:

- **A host is in one directory group at a time.** When a host joins a
directory group, FOG removes it from its other directory group. Other
groups are not changed.
- **Joining writes the OU onto the host.** FOG sets **Organizational Unit**
on the **Active Directory** tab of the host to the OU of the group. If the
group belongs to a directory domain, FOG also sets **Domain Name**.
- **Leaving changes nothing on the host.** The host keeps its OU and domain
until you change them.

Deleting a directory group deletes its core group. Deleting the core group
on the **Groups** page deletes the directory group.

>[!note] The join account is not set by the group
>Joining a directory group does not set **Domain Username** or **Domain
>Password**. A join account per domain is tracked in
>[#1887](https://github.com/FOGProject/fogproject/issues/1887).

### Browse Directory on the host page

The **Active Directory** tab of a host has a **Browse Directory** button.

- If the **ou** plugin is installed, FOG copies its OUs and host links into
Directory Groups. FOG keeps the IDs. A second install run copies nothing
twice.
- FOG creates the core group for each directory group, and writes its OU,
and its domain when it has one, onto each of its hosts. Before, the plugin
set the OU only when the legacy client checked in. The host now holds the
same value itself.

The **ou** plugin stays installed. Uninstall it when you are ready.
