   Zephyr is a real-time operating system. It is also the operating system the EC firmware is built on top of¹. It does not replace the code in this repository; it is required by it.

   The explanation by @DHowett is correct.

   Our EC firmware has been based on Zephyr since 2023, starting with our AMD laptops and everything since then.

   For example see:

   pushd src/third_party/zephyr/main

   
   During the build we pull in zephyr as a dependency.
