Problem

Request bodies drop every None, including values inside custom data, so there is no way to store an explicit null. Code moving from stream-chat, which sent None as null, silently loses those keys.

Solution

Add getstream.NULL, which the client sends as null anywhere in a request body. Plain None is still dropped, so unset optional fields keep their current behavior. The README and the stream-chat migration guide document it.

How to verify

  1. Run uv run pytest tests/test_decoding.py -k explicit_null.
  2. Optionally, call channel.update_channel_partial(set={"expires_at": NULL}) and confirm the channel's custom holds "expires_at": null.

Note

Low Risk
Small, additive serialization change with tests; default request behavior for omitted fields is unchanged.

Overview
Adds getstream.NULL so callers can send an explicit JSON null while plain None is still omitted from object fields (unset optionals unchanged). NULL is an enum sentinel (stable under dataclass-json deep copies); _strip_none maps it to Python None before JSON encoding, and encode_datetime passes NULL through unchanged.

NULL is re-exported from getstream. README adds a “Sending null” section (including partial updates vs unset), and the stream-chat migration table documents the behavioral difference from stream-chat.

Tests cover partial channel updates, message fields, and query payload filters.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added NULL to explicitly send JSON null in request bodies. Ordinary None values continue to be omitted.
    • Added guidance and an example for using NULL in partial channel updates.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how null values are handled compared with stream-chat.

Request bodies drop None values, so an unset optional field never overwrites stored data. Pass getstream.NULL where null must reach the API, for example inside custom data on channels and messages or in a partial update.

Walkthrough

The package adds and exports NULL for sending explicit JSON null values. _strip_none converts NULL to None and continues to omit ordinary None values. Documentation and a regression test describe and verify the behavior.

getstream exports NULL. _strip_none converts it to None while omitting ordinary None values. The regression test checks both cases, and the documentation explains how to send or remove fields.

Explicit nulls can fail for datetime fields or become string values in GET filters. Resolve those serialization paths before merging; clarify the list behavior in the documentation.

Explanation

The title "feat: add NULL to send an explicit null in request bodies" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR adds a public NULL sentinel in getstream/base.py, exports it from getstream/init.py, and makes _strip_none convert it to JSON null while still dropping ordinary None values. The README, migration guide, and regression test in tests/test_decoding.py support the same feature. The title is specific, concise, and uses a conventional commit prefix.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 3 files. Review comments at @getstream/base.py:
- Line 151: Update the model’s encode_datetime encoder to recognize and return
the NULL sentinel unchanged before calling isoformat, so _strip_none can
preserve it and the request sends null. Keep the existing datetime encoding
behavior unchanged for actual datetime values.

Review comments at @README.md:
- Line 148: Update the request-body guidance and migration table to distinguish
`None` values in dictionaries from those in lists: dictionary values are
omitted, while list elements are preserved and sent as `null`. Keep the existing
guidance for using `NULL` to store an explicit `null` in dictionary fields.
