The Language component maintains the translations of its modules in gettext files (feature request "PO files"): it reads and writes .po files, merges local changes and compiles the shipped files into .mo catalogs that native gettext serves. gettext/gettext provides this parsing, generation and compiling. - Needed: every language module of ILIAS is shipped as .po/.pot files. - Not easily implemented in ILIAS: the PO/MO formats (escaping, plural forms, contexts, comments, flags, binary MO tables). - Maintained and used beyond ILIAS: the standard PHP library for gettext files, already installed as a dependency of simplesamlphp. - Actively maintained, current version v5.7.3, pinned to major 5. composer.lock: content-hash only, the package is already locked at v5.7.3.
