Agents hit run_sql about 13k times in 14 days. The largest failure class was an unknown column: 268 failures, 28% of all run_sql errors. Most of these are names with exactly one right answer: service.name for ServiceName, Events.Name for EventsName, trace_id for TraceId, ServiceVersion for ResourceAttributes['service.version']. Agents also copied the gateway's internal database name out of error text (FROM maple_us.alert_checks).

What changed

  • Column fixes. When the warehouse names an unknown identifier that matches exactly one real column of the tables the query reads, run_sql rewrites it and reruns, up to 3 passes. The fix is matched case- and underscore-insensitively, or through a short alias list. Rules:
    • String literals, comments and names the query defines (AS x, CTEs) are never touched.
    • In a join, the column must belong to only one of the tables.
    • The output lists each rewrite (rewrites), and the agent gets a notice telling it to use the real name.
    • If a later pass fails on another name, the error says which rewrites it already ran with.
  • Error text. Warehouse errors drop the gateway's per-org subquery wrapper and maple_us./maple_eu. prefixes, our row-cap wrapper, and the org id literal (shown as $__orgFilter). A datasource permission error becomes "<table> cannot be read from run_sql" instead of a token curl command.
  • Catalog notes.
    • The logs sorting-key note was wrong; it now matches the table.
    • The traces note now names the rollups by question.
    • Added notes for service_operations_* / service_overview_*: which dimensions each has, and the quantilesTDigestMerge idiom.
    • Notes that service_endpoint_details_hourly.HttpStatusCode is a String.

How it was checked

  • Replay of real failures. 242 unknown-identifier failures from the last 14 days, using the SQL text from the warehouse spans.
    • 72 get an automatic fix.
    • I ran every rewritten query against the production warehouse (Maple's own org): 71 of 72 now run. The one left fails on a second, unrelated mistake in the same query.
  • Blind A/B test of extra hint text. I first built curated hints ("CommitSha is on service_overview_hourly", "Severity → SeverityNumber >= 17"), a type-mismatch hint and an org-filter fix suggestion.
    • 62 real failures, each given to sub agents (two models) with either the old or the new message; each wrote a fix that I ran live.
    • Two independent blind judges then rated intent preservation.
    • No measurable gain: 61 of 62 tied, and the suggestion misled once. The column list the tool already returns is enough, so none of that is in this PR.
  • Tests.
    • sql-identifiers.test.ts covers the rewrite rules, including literals, backticks, a backticked name containing ', joins and aliases.
    • raw-sql-error-text.test.ts covers the scrubber.
    • run-sql-recovery.test.ts drives the real tool through the fake warehouse: a rerun, the note after a second failure, the 3-pass cap, and scrubbed text.
  • Commands. Scoped typecheck for apps/ai, packages/backend, packages/domain; bun run lint:core; vitest over src/mcp/__evals__, src/mcp/lib, the run_sql tests and registry.contract.test.ts (502 passing at the top of the stack). I did not run the full suite or the repo-wide typecheck locally, so CI covers those.

Stack: this PR → #1960 (trace-id seek, row cap) → #1961 (failure message on the span).

run_sql now rewrites single-answer misspelt identifiers and reruns (up to 3 passes), reports each rewrite to the agent, and scrubs the gateway's internal SQL and org id out of warehouse error text. Safe to merge apart from one regression in how the read tables are detected.

  • fixUnknownIdentifier rewrites an unknown column to the one catalog column it can mean, then reruns
  • rawSqlErrorText strips the per-org subquery wrapper, maple_us./maple_eu., the row cap and the org literal
  • run_sql output gains rewrites, plus a notice and a rerun-count note on the following error
  • Catalog notes for logs sorting key, traces rollups and service_* dimensions corrected

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Only the identifier-rewrite helper changed since the last review; the backtick gap is closed and pinned by a test, and no other defect remains in it.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium

This head closes the backtick-quoted-table gap in referencedTableNames with a raw-SQL fallback and a covering test. The rewrite helper is otherwise unchanged from the reviewed commit and is safe to merge.

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F1 · Backtick-quoted table names no longer count as referenced
What was checked
  • Backtick-quoted tables count again via sql.indexOf(traces) (sql-identifiers.ts:24), pinned by the new test.
  • \b boundaries keep events from matching inside product_events, so the fallback adds no false positive for unquoted names.
  • Delta from 9cea5f8 is exactly line 24 plus one test; the rest of the PR was reviewed earlier.

…base name

The preview test showed pr_1961.traces and the org id in errors: the scrubber
only knew the maple_us/maple_eu databases. It now matches the wrapper's shape
for any database, keeps the caller's table alias, strips a database prefix in
front of any catalog table and blanks any remaining org id literal.

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Scrub re-run against realistic wrapper/row-cap/join shapes came out balanced and leak-free; only an alias-less wrapper directly inside a paren is untested.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Generalises the run_sql error scrubber to collapse the gateway's per-org subquery under any database name (not just maple_us/maple_eu), strips <db>.<table> only for real catalog tables, and masks leftover org ids. Safe to merge.

What was checked
  • Ran the full replace chain on row-capped, joined, nested-subquery and user-aliased messages: output balanced, no maple_us, org_x or maple_raw_sql_limited left
  • alert_checks and the other 46 datasource names are in listWarehouseTables(), so the narrower <db>.<table> strip keeps the coverage the blanket prefix strip had
  • audit_log is the only hidden datasource and its message returns early as the plain refusal (raw-sql-error-text.ts:17), so its qualified name cannot slip through

…y wrapper

The wrapper pattern took an optional opening paren without its closing one,
so a wrapper inside parentheses with no alias left a stray ')' behind.

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Scrubber replayed on three real production warehouse errors; the new test fails on the previous regex.
no findings · tests covered · risk low

The follow-up hunk splits the gateway-wrapper scrub into an aliased and a bare regex so an unaliased (… WHERE OrgId = …) collapses as one balanced pair. Splitting them is correct and the regression is pinned by a test that fails on the old pattern; safe to merge.

  • ALIASED_WRAPPER/BARE_WRAPPER replace the single optional-paren GATEWAY_WRAPPER regex in rawSqlErrorText
  • A bare gateway wrapper now collapses to the table name without leaving a stray )
What was checked
  • Replayed rawSqlErrorText on three live WarehouseQueryError messages: no pr_1961./maple_us. prefix, no org_3KkfPhr7… literal, balanced parens
  • BARE_WRAPPER consumes a matched (/) pair, so x IN (…) output is x IN (traces); the old (\(\()? form produced x IN traces)
  • rawSqlErrorText still returns a McpQueryError carrying cause, and the unscrubbed text stays on the WarehouseQueryService.executeSql span

Recognize qualifiers for quoted tables.

For SELECT t.trace_id FROM traces AS t WHERE $__orgFilter(t), masking removes the table name before this matcher runs. It therefore never records t, and the qualified identifier cannot be corrected. Parse quoted table names and their aliases in qualifier discovery. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Masking blanked backtick-quoted names with the literals, so a quoted table,
its alias or a quoted defined name was invisible, while a table name inside a
literal or used as an alias counted as a table read. A scanner now blanks only
literals and comments and unquotes identifiers in place, and tables count only
after FROM, JOIN or a comma.

@coderabbitai The two outside-diff findings are fixed in 5175934, by the same scanner change as the inline one:

  • Qualifiers for quoted tables: SELECT t.trace_id FROM \traces` AS tnow recordstand rewrites tot.TraceId`.
  • Backtick-defined aliases: AS \service.name`` is now a defined name, so the rewrite is declined.

The new scanner reads quoted identifiers in place and counts tables only after FROM/JOIN/comma, and the rewrite rules hold on the cases I ran. One branch fixes a qualified column against the wrong table, so a joined query can be rerun onto a name that still does not exist.

  • identifierText unquotes backticked/double-quoted identifiers instead of blanking them, keeping every position
  • referencedTableNames counts a table only after FROM, JOIN or a comma
  • definedNames now captures dotted aliases, so AS `service.name` blocks its own rewrite

Findings

🟠 Warning · F2 · Qualified fix keeps the agent's qualifier without checking that table has the column

correctness · apps/ai/src/mcp/lib/sql-identifiers.ts:94-97

identifierFix accepts any qualifier in scope and only checks the folded column against the union of the read tables, so it rewrites t.body to t.Body in SELECT t.body FROM logs l JOIN traces t ... even though traces has no Body (only logs does; t.severity_text behaves the same way). The rerun then fails on a second, different name and the agent is told to "use t.Body directly", which is the opposite of the documented join rule. Carry the qualifier→table mapping instead of a bare name set, and require that table's own columns to contain the fold match.

Make `tableQualifiers` return `ReadonlyMap<string, string>` (qualifier → table name), then in the dot branch look up the qualifier's table and require one of *its* columns to fold to the written column before rewriting.

What was checked
  • identifierText preserves length on unterminated literals, backticked names holding ', and \' escapes (ran the head file with stubbed catalog)
  • A table name inside a literal or used as an alias is not counted as read; FROM traces`` still is (ran at head)
  • Alias rewrites require exactly one read table to own the map column, so errortype on logs is declined

t.body in a logs/traces join was rewritten to t.Body because logs has Body,
though traces (t) does not. Qualifiers now map to their table, and the fix

t.body against traces is now declined (checked by running the head module); the alias-declaration rewrite the new rule leaves open is untested.
1 warning −1 · tests partial −1 · risk medium

run_sql now rewrites a column name the warehouse rejected when exactly one real column fits, reruns up to three times, reports the rewrites, and scrubs the gateway's internal SQL out of error text. The scoping fix for qualified names holds; one gap remains in what the rewrite is allowed to touch.

  • fixUnknownIdentifier folds the rejected name onto one catalog column and reruns via runFixing
  • Qualified names are fixed only from the table their qualifier names
  • rawSqlErrorText strips the per-org wrapper, row cap and org id from warehosue errors

`replaceIdentifier` renames an `AS`-less table alias, corrupting the FROM and `$__orgFilter`
`definedNames` records only `AS x`, `x AS (` and CTE names, so a table alias declared without `AS` is unprotected while `replaceIdentifier` rewrites every occurrence of the rejected name. `SELECT service FROM traces service WHERE $__orgFilter(service)` comes back as `SELECT ServiceName FROM traces ServiceName WHERE $__orgFilter(ServiceName)`: invalid SQL, and an org filter that names no table, so the rerun fails on an error the agent never wrote.

  • ✅ F2 · Qualified fix keeps the agent's qualifier without checking that table has the column
What was checked
  • Qualified fix now resolves through tableQualifiers: t.body over traces declined, l.body over logs fixed (ran the head module)
  • Table detection ignores backticked names inside literals and AS-declared aliases; masking keeps offsets so replacements land correctly
  • Scrubber tests cover balanced parentheses for an unaliased wrapper and an arbitrary database name

@maple-review-bot F3 follow-up fixed in db55d92: an identifier straight after a closing parenthesis that is not a SQL keyword is now a defined name, so the AS-less derived-table alias in FROM (...) service is never rewritten (test added). It also covers select aliases like count() c.

@maple-review-bot

Checked apps/ai/src/mcp/lib/sql-identifiers.ts at db55d92 and re-implemented identifierText/definedNames in node against the repro shapes:

"SELECT service FROM (SELECT ServiceName FROM traces WHERE $__orgFilter) service" => defined: ["service"]
"SELECT count() c FROM traces" => defined: ["c"]
"SELECT ServiceName FROM traces WHERE (SpanName = 1) AND service.name = 2"        => defined: []

You're right — F3 as reported can be dismissed. The \)\s*([A-Za-z_]\w*) pass (line 143) with KEYWORDS_AFTER_PAREN puts the AS-less derived-table alias in definedNames, so line 175 declines before replaceIdentifier sees it, and the test at sql-identifiers.test.ts:115 pins it. The count() c select alias comes along for free. The ordinary-identifier shape is closed.

One narrow residual, since the capture class stops at .: a quoted AS-less alias with a dot is not a defined name —

"SELECT service.name FROM (SELECT ServiceName FROM traces WHERE $__orgFilter) `service.name`" => defined: ["service"]

so it still reaches the fixer: identifierFix folds it to ServiceName, and replaceIdentifier's (?![\w.(]) lookahead (line 109) does not touch a use like `service.name`.SpanName, but does replace the alias declaration itself, leaving the qualifier dangling. AS \service.name`is already covered by the[\w.]in the line-140 pattern, so this is just the paren branch being narrower; widening it to([A-Za-z_][\w.])` closes it. Not blocking for this PR — it needs an agent writing a dotted, AS-less, quoted derived-table alias — but it's the one shape the new rule misses.

@maple-review-bot Closed the residual in 9da86aa: the closing-paren alias capture is now [A-Za-z_][\w.]*, so a quoted, dotted, AS-less derived-table alias is a defined name. Test added.

@maple-review-bot

Agreed — F3 is closed and can be dismissed.

Checked at 9da86aa3: the delta is the one-character-class widening at sql-identifiers.ts:143 (\)\s*([A-Za-z_]\w*) → \)\s*([A-Za-z_][\w.]*)), and the definedNames(sql).has(written) guard at line 175 still runs before identifierFix, so a captured alias never reaches replaceIdentifier. Deps aren't installed here, so I re-implemented identifierText and both definedNames regexes in node against the repro shapes — ) service.name, ) `service.name`, ) "service.name", ) AS service.name all yield the alias, and the plain ) service case still works. I also checked the escape hatch: an alias the capture still misses finds no column/alias fix and returns undefined, and replaceIdentifier's (?![\w.(]) lookahead already blocks a bare service matching inside service.name. The wider class can only over-capture a column into definedNames, which suppresses a rewrite rather than corrupting one.

Agreed on the specific shapes F3 named — those can be dismissed. I read tableQualifiers and definedNames at 8fd3173d (apps/ai/src/mcp/lib/sql-identifiers.ts:137-163) and ran their regexes plus identifierText against the shapes in the finding:

"SELECT service.name FROM traces `service.name` WHERE $__orgFilter(`service.name`)"
  masked: "SELECT service.name FROM traces service.name WHERE $__orgFilter( service.name )"
  qualifiers: [["traces","traces"],["service.name","traces"]] <- declined at line 175
"SELECT service FROM traces service WHERE ..."
  qualifiers: [["traces","traces"],["service","traces"]] <- declined at line 175
"... FROM (...) service.name"
  defined: ["service.name"] <- declined at line 175

The [A-Za-z_][\w.]* capture on m[2] maps the dotted alias, so qualifiers.has(written) fires. Good.

The underlying property is still reachable, because both guards are keyed to the catalog: tableQualifiers returns [] when m[1].split(".").at(-1) is not in catalog (lines 158-159), and the closing-paren capture only covers alias-after-). An AS-less alias on a CTE reference gets neither. Verified with the same regexes:

"WITH s AS (SELECT ServiceName FROM traces) SELECT service FROM s service WHERE $__orgFilter(service)"
  qualifiers: [["traces","traces"]] <- `s service` is skipped, table `s` not in catalog
defined: ["s","SELECT"] <- no closing paren, so no alias captured

referencedTableNames still finds traces inside the CTE body, so identifierFix("service", [traces], …) returns ServiceName via KNOWN_ALIASES, and replaceIdentifier rewrites all three uses — giving … SELECT ServiceName FROM s ServiceName WHERE $__orgFilter(ServiceName), corrupting the FROM alias and the $__orgFilter argument exactly as F3 described. Same holds for any non-catalog relation (system.tables systemTables, table functions).

So: the reported examples are fixed, the general property is not. Smallest close would be to feed the same (?:\bFROM\s+|\bJOIN\s+|,\s*) capture into definedNames regardless of catalog.has(...) (the alias is a defined name whether or not we know the table's columns), with a test for the CTE case above. I haven't staged it — the catalog filter in tableQualifiers is load-bearing for the qualified-column fix, so that needs the suite, not a blind edit. If you'd rather treat the residual as out of scope for this PR, that's a reasonable call; it's a narrower precondition than the original F3 (needs a CTE or non-catalog FROM), not a new class of bug.

FROM traces JOIN logs l took JOIN as the first table's alias and missed l,
and the alias of a CTE or other non-catalog relation (FROM s service) was not
a defined name, so it could be renamed. Every FROM/JOIN/comma relation's alias
is now a defined name, clause keywords are never captured as one, and the
qualifier map keeps only catalog tables.

@maple-review-bot Took your suggestion in 2e6bedf. One relation scan (FROM/JOIN/comma, keywords never an alias) now feeds both helpers:

  • definedNames gets every relation's alias, catalog or not, so WITH s AS (...) SELECT service FROM s service ... is declined (test added).
  • tableQualifiers keeps the catalog filter for the qualified-column fix.

Replay of the 242 real unknown-identifier failures is unchanged: 72 auto-fixed.

@maple-review-bot

Confirmed — the earlier table-alias finding is addressed in 2e6bedf, and I verified it against the code rather than the summary:

  • One scan, two consumers. relations() (sql-identifiers.ts:139) is the only relation parser; definedNames (:155) and tableQualifiers (:163) both read it, so they can no longer disagree about what an alias is.
  • Catalog filter split correctly. definedNames takes every alias (:155, no catalog check), while tableQualifiers still drops non-catalog relations (if (!catalog.has(table)) return [], :165) — so the qualified-column fix keeps its table-ownership check and only defined-name protection widened.
  • Keyword guard is applied to the alias. RELATION (:134) carries (?!(?:${KEYWORDS})\b) immediately before the alias capture, and KEYWORDS is the same set the )-alias filter uses. I replayed the regex standalone over the shapes that matter: SELECT l.body FROM traces JOIN logs l ON ... → [{traces}, {logs, alias l}], WITH s AS (...) SELECT service FROM s service → {name: s, alias: service}, FROM logs l, traces t → both aliases, and comma-separated select lists (SELECT count(), service.name, , INTERVAL 5 MINUTE, , trace_id, span_id) yield names with no alias, so nothing is wrongly captured as a defined name.
  • Tests for both regression cases are in place: CTE alias decline at sql-identifiers.test.ts:131 and joined-after-unaliased at :137.

I can't re-run your 242-failure replay — the fixture isn't committed, so the 72 figure is taken as reported; committing the replay set (or the count assertion) would be what settles it later. Checks are green except Token Cost still in progress. Nothing new from me on this commit.

The raw-SQL gate read FROM traces JOIN logs l as traces aliased JOIN, so l
never bound and $__orgFilter(l) was rejected on valid SQL. A clause keyword
is never taken as an alias; a joined subquery's alias still does not bind.

Found on the live preview while re-checking the JOIN-alias fix: the raw-SQL gate (aliasBindsTable in packages/domain/src/raw-sql.ts) has the same flaw.

  • The bug: in FROM traces JOIN logs l it read JOIN as traces's alias, so l never bound, and $__orgFilter(l) was rejected even when correctly spelled. This is a fail-closed false rejection, not a tenancy gap.
  • Fixed in 7db5041: a clause keyword can no longer be captured as an alias. The now-dead keyword filter after the match is removed.
  • Tests: two new accepted shapes (unaliased first table, with and without FINAL), and two new rejections (a joined subquery's alias after an unaliased first table, via JOIN and CROSS JOIN). The 217 gate tests pass.

Decline rewrites when a qualifier is reused across relations or scopes.

The alias-only guard misses this form:

WITH t AS (
  SELECT ServiceName AS span_name, SpanName
  FROM traces
  WHERE $__orgFilter
)
SELECT t.span_name
FROM t
WHERE t.span_name IN (
  SELECT t.span_name
  FROM traces t
  WHERE $__orgFilter(t)
)

The inner t.span_name can be recovered as t.SpanName. replaceIdentifier then rewrites every t.span_name, including the valid outer CTE references. The query can succeed while returning the CTE's SpanName column instead of its span_name (ServiceName) column.

The guard must detect both repeated aliases and repeated relation names. FROM t has no alias, so checking only alias === "t" does not detect this case.

New guard only declines rewrites, and the added test fails without it; earlier regex edge cases are pinned by behaviour tests.

run_sql now rewrites an unambiguous misspelt column and reruns, and scrubs internal SQL out of warehouse errors. The change since the last review only adds a guard that declines a qualified fix when its qualifier names two relations, and it is correct.

  • fixUnknownIdentifier declines a qualified rewrite when qualifierReused sees the qualifier bound by two relations
  • sql-identifiers.test.ts pins the CTE-plus-table qualifier case
What was checked
  • Walked the new CTE case through identifierFix without the guard: it rewrote all three t.span_name uses, so the test does fail without qualifierReused
  • identifierText keeps every position when blanking literals/comments and unquoting backticks, so replaceIdentifier spans line up with sql
  • Global SQL_TOKEN/RELATION regexes are only used through replace/matchAll, which do not carry lastIndex between calls
