fix(query-engine): keep list inputs from nesting SQL past max_parser_depth - #2021
The Code Review → Team tab (#2018) shows "Couldn't load the team" in production for orgs with a few hundred connected repositories. ciActorStatsQuery built its default-branch filter by chaining .or() once per repository, which nests one more paren level per repo. At ~250 repos ClickHouse rejects the query:
Maximum parse depth (1000) exceeded (TOO_DEEP_RECURSION)
Probing every list-taking builder against the real parser found the same shape in two more user-reachable places, both failing at ~300 items:
Log body search (token index mode): one .and() per search word, so a pasted stack trace fails.
Attribute-filter OR groups (logs and traces): one .or() per member.
Fix
Each chain is now one flat CH.or(...) / CH.and(...), so nesting depth no longer grows with the list. Funnel steps are flattened too (capped at 10, so not broken, but the same shape). The SQL baseline diff is parenthesis flattening only.
Why tests missed it
The catalog analyzer lane already runs every query through real ClickHouse, but each builder fixture uses one or two list items, and this only shows at a few hundred.
list-input-nesting.property.test.ts: generates list sizes 1 to 2000 for 7 list-taking builders and asserts the SQL never nests deeper than with 2 items. Runs in the unit suite, no ClickHouse needed. Fails on 5 of 7 against the old builders.
ci-runs.clickhouse.e2e.test.ts: actor stats over 500 repositories against ClickHouse. Fails with the production error on the old builder.
Verification
Old and new actor-stats SQL for a ~253-repository org run read-only against production data: old fails with TOO_DEEP_RECURSION; new returns 15 actors, and its default-branch counts match an independent tuple-IN query exactly.
On ClickHouse 26.2 (CI's version): catalog analyzer sweep 568/568, CI e2e 10/10. Every fixed builder parses at 2000 items.
query-engine 1643/1643, typecheck and effect lint clean.
Follow-ups (not in this PR)
The default-branch list appears twice in the actor-stats SQL (~215 bytes per repository), so past ~1,200 connected repositories it exceeds the default max_query_size (256 KB). Sending only repositories that have CI runs would bound it.
The Team page load makes one listBranchesByRepository call per repository (253 in the failing trace).

Bug Fixes
Improved CI run statistics when an owner has many repositories with default branches.
Improved handling of large lists in searches and filters, including log, span, and product-event queries, reducing the risk of failures with extensive inputs.
…depth
The Code Review Team tab failed with TOO_DEEP_RECURSION for orgs with a few
hundred repositories: ciActorStats chained one `.or()` per default branch,
nesting a paren per repository until ClickHouse's max_parser_depth (1000).
Log body search (one `.and()` per word) and attribute-filter OR groups had
the same shape and failed at ~300 items.
Each is now one flat CH.or / CH.and. A property test checks that list inputs
from 1 to 2000 items never make the SQL deeper than two items do, and a
ClickHouse e2e case runs actor stats over 500 repositories.
🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge. Flattening is provably semantics-preserving here, and a property test, the SQL baseline and a 500-repository e2e pin it. no findings · tests covered · risk medium
Replaces the per-item .and()/.or() chains in four query-engine builders — CI actor stats, log body search, attribute-filter OR groups and funnel steps — with one flat CH.and/CH.or call, so parser nesting no longer grows with the list. The SQL is unchanged apart from parentheses.
ciActorStatsQuery ORs default branches with one flat CH.or
Log body search ANDs every token through one CH.and
buildAttrFilterCondition OR groups and funnel steps flatten their OR
New property test bounds nesting for 7 list-taking builders; e2e covers 500 repos

Several ClickHouse query builders now compose Boolean predicates with variadic operators instead of chained reductions. The change includes property-based SQL nesting tests, an end-to-end CI actor-statistics test, and updated SQL snapshots.
CI, log, product-event, and trace query predicates use variadic Boolean composition. Product-event expectations and catalog snapshots reflect the generated SQL.
Property-based tests compare SQL nesting across generated list sizes with a two-item baseline. An end-to-end test checks actor statistics with 500 default-branch entries. The query-engine package adds @effect/vitest as a development dependency.

All seeded runs use acme/api on feat/x, while the 500 inputs use acme/repo-0 through acme/repo-499 on main. They also use pull-request events, but defaultBranchRuns counts only push events. The expected zero is therefore guaranteed. Add a successful push run that matches a late entry in the 500-item list and assert its nonzero default-branch count.
