Prefill currently launches one CTA per 128-byte K-pool key, and decode recopies the same packed keys for adjacent MTP verification queries. Batch the prefill gather and let eligible decode rows share page storage.

Changes

  • Gather 32 independent prefill pools per CTA, preserving FP8 key bytes, FP32 scales, input strides and masked padding.
  • Reuse decode pages within complete aligned groups when their request slots match on the GPU and their maximum pool length is at least 4096. Preserve each query's original causal length. Mixed, short and incomplete groups use independent pages.
  • Check slot ownership on every CUDA Graph replay, retain per-row allocation capacity, reset page-table identity on replay, and initialize one dummy page for empty rows.
  • Keep the change limited to the four gather functions; pooling, compression, indexer math, scheduling and deployment configuration are unchanged. Add focused tests and a standalone comparison script.

Validation

  • 23 GPU tests passed on NVIDIA H100 80GB, PyTorch 2.11.0+cu130 and Triton 3.6.0. Tests compare valid keys and scales exactly and cover strided views, partial pools, up to 1M context, causal lengths, mixed/incomplete groups, empty/HOLD rows, request-slot recycling and changing CUDA Graph inputs.
  • Black 21.12b0, flake8 and git diff --check passed for the changed files.

Gather microbenchmark

Baseline: main 6a6e980fddfc79c271f304a4121bf2ec229092f5. Three alternating AB/BA rounds, median wrapper latency, including allocation and page-table initialization; compilation excluded.

Operation Pool capacity Batch/layout Before After Speedup
Prefill 32,768 1 25.82 us 12.03 us 2.15x
Prefill 32,768 4 85.25 us 28.93 us 2.95x
Decode 32,768 8/two shared groups of four 39.10 us 21.34 us 1.83x
Prefill 262,144 1 163.74 us 47.30 us 3.46x
Prefill 262,144 4 636.42 us 153.41 us 4.15x
Decode 262,144 8/two shared groups of four 257.92 us 96.61 us 2.67x

262,144 pools correspond to 1,048,576 input tokens with the existing 4:1 pooling. At this capacity, mixed-request decode improves 311.52 -> 298.08 us (1.05x). Small cases are not uniformly faster: prefill at 640 pools/batch 1 changes 6.50 -> 6.75 us. Empty-row initialization adds 0.64–1.34 us across tested capacities (8.8–18.1% versus the baseline, which leaves empty pages uninitialized).

These are synthetic gather measurements, not model TPS, TTFT or full-model accuracy results. No end-to-end gain is attributed to this component alone.

Reproduce on a CUDA/FP8-capable machine:

pytest -q unit_tests/models/glm5_next/test_kpool_gather.py
git show 6a6e980f:lightllm/models/glm5_next/triton_kernel/kpool.py > /tmp/kpool_before.py
python test/benchmark_glm53_kpool.py --baseline /tmp/kpool_before.py

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Paged pool gathering can reuse pages across adjacent requests when they share the same request and meet the configured conditions, reducing redundant data copying for large pools.
    • Pool gathering now handles allocated slots beyond a sequence’s length with default values.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for pool gathering across varied pool sizes, reuse settings, and request patterns.

Walkthrough

The GLM5 K-pool gather kernels now process pools in groups and support sharing paged data across eligible rows. CUDA tests cover gathering behavior, and a standalone benchmark compares baseline and candidate implementations.

Changes: GLM5 K-pool gathering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gather kernel behavior
lightllm/models/glm5_next/triton_kernel/kpool.py
The regular gather kernel processes 32 pools per CTA and fills slots beyond each sequence length with default values. Paged gathering accepts reuse groups of 1, 2, 4, or 8. For complete adjacent groups with matching request IDs and a maximum pool length of at least 4096, it copies pages for the first row and maps other rows to those pages.
Gather validation and benchmark
unit_tests/models/glm5_next/test_kpool_gather.py, test/benchmark_glm53_kpool.py
CUDA tests cover regular and paged gathering, including graph replay, partial groups, and invalid reuse-group values. The benchmark measures baseline and candidate implementations across prefill and decode cases and reports JSON results.

Pass the row count as a runtime value instead of a tl.constexpr.

BATCH is a tl.constexpr and receives req_idx.numel() at launch. Triton compiles a separate kernel for each distinct constexpr value, so each new row count pays a compile on its first launch.

The grid already provides this value. The launch grid's second axis is batch, so tl.num_programs(1) equals req_idx.numel() in both the short-pool and long-pool paths. Use tl.num_programs(1) in the kernel and remove BATCH from the signature and the launch.

Update the HOLD-row replay assertion for the dummy page.

When all lengths are zero, each row remains its own owner. The kernel runs page 0, loads masked defaults, and writes zero keys and 1.0 scales. The existing assertion expects every byte to remain 127, so this test fails.

Keep the dummy-page behavior and check page 0 contents instead.

Suggested test update
-    assert (pages == 127).all()
+    page_bytes = pages.view(pages.shape[0], -1).reshape(3, triton.cdiv(max_pools, 64), -1)
+    assert (page_bytes[:, 0, : 64 * 128] == 0).all()
+    assert (page_bytes[:, 0, 64 * 128 :].contiguous().view(torch.float32) == 1).all()
+    assert (page_bytes[:, 1:] == 127).all()
