fix: ignore Enter while an input method is composing - #83
mjmags2020 wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Enter confirms an IME candidate (Japanese, Chinese, Korean), but the rename boxes, prompts and search fields treated it as "submit", so renaming a note to 日本 committed the raw にほん. Add a shared isImeComposing() helper (isComposing, or keyCode 229 for Safari) and return early from every text-field Enter handler listed in Perssonify#42. TestsOnly PromptDialog is tested behaviorally. The other nine files are covered by a source scan that counts guard occurrences, which proves the call exists but not that it sits in the right condition. Unguarded Escape handlers in rename boxes and dialogs can still cancel mid-composition, and no test covers that. Review info

If a composing Enter carries Ctrl or Meta, this handler still calls

If a composing Enter carries Ctrl or Meta, these handlers still call
commitComposer()orfinish(). The composer can clear its draft, or the card editor can save and close, before the converted text arrives. Apply!isImeComposing(e)to both shortcuts, as the title-field handler does. Also applies to: 1066-1066

What changed
Enter no longer submits, renames or closes anything while an input method is composing. A shared
isImeComposing(e)helper guards every text-field Enter handler listed in the issue.Closes #42
Why
People typing Japanese, Chinese or Korean press Enter to pick a candidate from their input method. Our rename boxes, prompts and search fields treated that Enter as "submit". Renaming a note to 日本 saved the raw "にほん" and closed the box before the conversion could be chosen. Only the Escape path (
overlay-escape.ts) checked for composition.apps/web/src/ui/shared/utils/ime.ts(new):isImeComposing(e)checksisComposing || keyCode === 229. ThekeyCodecheck matters because Safari fires the confirming keydown aftercompositionend, withisComposingalready false. The helper takes React's synthetic event or a native one. It is namedisImeComposingso it doesn't clash with the panes'isComposing()handle.PromptDialog,ConfirmDialog's title field, findReplace (find and replace), urlImportDialog, the graphView search, the cardsView title, MathNodes and consolePanel.searchPanelreturns early on any key while composing, because Escape and the arrow keys belong to the input method then too.How to verify
Automated:
apps/web/src/__tests__/ime-enter.test.jsx(17 cases) covers:keyCode229, on an ordinary Enter and on a React synthetic event;PromptDialog: a composing Enter (isComposingorkeyCode229) does not callonConfirm, and a normal Enter afterwards still submits日本;With the handler changes reverted, 12 of the 17 cases fail.
Manual check (Chrome, macOS Japanese – Romaji input), shown in the video: rename a note to 日本語. Type
nihon, press Space, pick 日本 and press Enter, then typego, press Space, pick 語 and press Enter.golands outside the field.I also checked both builds in Chrome with a real composition driven through CDP (
Input.imeSetComposition, ase2e/cases/journeys.mjsdoes). Before the fix the box closed on the IME's Enter; after it, the box stayed open with 日本 and the next Enter saved it.Commands, run from the repo root on Node 23 / Bun 1.4.4:

Claude Code helped find the handlers and drafted the helper, the guards and the test. I reviewed every change, checked that the test fails without the fix, and tested the behaviour by hand with the macOS Japanese input method.
