Fix cancellation and sequencing in stream iteration. Cancelling a stream closes synchronous iterators before the first read and while a yielded promise is pending. Subsequent iterator calls wait for cancellation to settle.

Changes

  • Validate iterator results and incompatible receivers, preserve protocol access order, and release consumed chunks after operations settle.
  • Infer unwrapped values for synchronous iterables and include async iteration declarations in the published polyfill.
  • Match the native ReadableStream.from method shape and require iterable objects. The standalone fromAnyIterable helper accepts strings.
  • Update dependencies and GitHub Actions, add WebKit and upstream WPT to CI, and provide reproducible throughput and allocation benchmarks.
  • Consolidate development documentation and shared test configuration. Changesets cover the runtime and type fixes.

Validation

  • 393 local browser regression tests passed across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit.
  • 63 compatibility tasks passed across current Chromium/Firefox/WebKit, actual Safari 27.2, Chrome 114, Firefox 115, and WebKit 17. Each runtime passed all 182 upstream behavior tests in Window and Worker contexts, plus the cross-realm regression and local receiver checks.
  • The complete Streams IDL suite introduces zero additional failures relative to each browser's native baseline. Safari/WebKit retain existing native metadata failures; WebKit 17 also retains native BYOB limitations.
  • 27 benchmark workloads and two allocation/GC checks passed.
  • Build, TypeScript checks, published declaration consumption with TypeScript 5.6 and 7, formatting, actionlint, frozen-lockfile installation, and dependency audit passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved stream iteration by serializing queued reads and returns, handling cancellation and cleanup more consistently, and rejecting calls made with incompatible iterator receivers.
    • Improved iterable conversion by validating iterator results and preserving the expected order of property access. Synchronous iterable values are now unwrapped as reflected in TypeScript types.
    • Added validation for ReadableStream.from inputs and iterator options, including support for null options in the async iterator.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified iterable conversion and added development and testing guidance.

Walkthrough

The PR updates async iterator queuing, receiver validation, and iterable-to-stream conversion. It adds browser compatibility tests and runtime and memory benchmarks. Package scripts, CI workflows, release configuration, and development documentation are also updated.

Changes: Iterator behavior and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Async iterator queue and receiver handling
src/core/asyncIterator.ts, src/types/async-iterator.d.ts, src/polyfill/asyncIterator.ts, tests/iteration-regressions.spec.ts, .changeset/*iterator*.md, .changeset/preserve-polyfill-types.md
Async iterator operations now use a shared queue. The options parameter accepts null, and calls with unregistered receivers reject with TypeError. Type declarations, regression tests, and patch changesets cover these updates.
Iterable conversion and cancellation
src/core/fromAnyIterable.ts, src/polyfill/fromAnyIterable.ts, tests/fromAnyIterable.spec.ts, tests/iteration-regressions.spec.ts, .changeset/*iterable*.md, README.md
fromAnyIterable adds overloads and validates iterator results. The pull and cancellation paths handle synchronous iterator values and cleanup. The polyfill wrapper and tests cover invalid arguments and related protocol behavior.
Browser compatibility test harness
compatibility/*, vitest.tools.config.mjs
The harness prepares Web Platform Test assets, serves suites in window or worker contexts, and runs tests across configured browsers. It records results and includes receiver checks and legacy browser setup.
Runtime and memory benchmarks
benchmarks/*, vitest.tools.config.mjs, README.md
Benchmark scripts compare baseline and current implementations across Node and browser runtimes. They record timing, allocation, and retained-chunk results.
Project scripts and workflow updates
package.json, tsconfig.test.json, vite.config.ts, .github/actions/setup/action.yml, .github/workflows/*, .changeset/config.json, .gitignore, biome.json, copy-files-from-to.json, README.md
Package scripts and configuration add type checking, browser and compatibility tests, and benchmark commands. CI and release workflows update their actions and inputs. Package metadata and supporting configuration are also changed.
