Reuse a protocol `2026-07-28` `server/discover` result. `MCPClient.getDiscoverResult()` returns the result of the connection, or the adopted prior. `createMCPClient({ prior })` passes a saved one to the SDK `Client.connect`, so the client skips the `server/discover` request. `DiscoverResult` and `PriorDiscovery` are exported as types.

## Skip the discover request

On protocol `2026-07-28`, the client sends `server/discover` when it connects. Some hosts open a new connection for each request. They pay for that round trip each time.

Save the result per user or token, then pass it back as `prior`:

```ts
import { createMCPClient } from '@tanstack/ai-mcp'
import type { DiscoverResult } from '@tanstack/ai-mcp'
const MAX_AGE_MS = 5 * 60_000
const saved = new Map<string, { discover: DiscoverResult; savedAt: number }>()
Remove expired token-keyed cache entries.
If tokens rotate or users accumulate, saved retains every bearer token and its result after the five-minute reuse window ends. A long-lived host retains those credentials indefinitely and grows the map without a bound. Evict entries when their lifetime ends; checking age only when the same token returns does not remove abandoned entries.
Review comment at @docs/tools/mcp-manual.md around lines 150 - 151:
Update the saved cache lifecycle so entries are removed once MAX_AGE_MS elapses,
even when their token is never reused; do not rely solely on age checks during
cache lookup, and ensure expired bearer tokens and results are no longer
retained in saved.
- `getDiscoverResult()` returns the `server/discover` result of the connection. It is `undefined` when the server speaks protocol `2025-11-25`.
- The result is plain JSON, so you can keep it in a cache or a database.
- Do not share a saved result between users. The spec treats it as private to one authorization context. See [Caching](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2026-07-28/server/utilities/caching).
- You decide how long to keep it. A stale result fails on the first request after connect, not on connect.
- With `prior`, connect sends no request. A server that is down, or a token that is no longer valid, fails on the first call.
## Resources
MCP resources are context documents (files, database records, web pages) the server exposes. Fetch them and inject them into `chat()` as content parts.
Keep getDiscoverResult optional on MCPClient.
This required member makes existing hand-written MCPClient implementations fail type-checking. The PR objective explicitly preserves those implementations by making the accessor optional. Make the interface member optional, and update typed callers to use optional chaining. (github.com)
Qualify the request-free connection claim.
If a modern server advertises tools.listChanged, connect() subsequently awaits #listenForToolListChanges(). That method opens a subscriptions/listen request and waits for its acknowledgement. A modern prior therefore skips server/discover but does not always remove a connection-time round trip. State this limitation in the API documentation and the new examples. Update the API documentation and examples describing `prior` so they state that
it skips `server/discover` but may not eliminate connection-time requests:
`connect()` can await `#listenForToolListChanges()` when the server advertises
`tools.listChanged`, including the subscription acknowledgement.
