fix: preload eagerly rendered images and hoist charset and viewport metas in document renders - #100
React's server renderer emits a <link rel="preload" as="image"> for every <img> it renders eagerly and opens <head> with the charset and viewport metas (pushImg and pushMeta in ReactFizzConfigDOM). Redact rendered both in place, so the browser only discovered a page's hero image once the parser reached it in the body, and a long stylesheet list or title could push <meta charset> past the 1024-byte window.
What changes
In a document render (an <html> tree, or one whose head Redact synthesises), the walk now feeds <img> and <meta> through the existing resource collector:
An <img> with a src or srcSet that is not loading="lazy" or fetchPriority="low", is not a data: URI and is not inside <picture>, <noscript> or SVG adds a preload resource with React's attribute set (imageSrcSet/imageSizes instead of href for responsive images, plus crossOrigin, integrity, type, fetchPriority, referrerPolicy). It shares the collector's dedupe key with explicit preload() calls, so rendering the same image twice, or after preloading it, emits one link. An eager <img> moves an earlier preload() of the same image ahead of the stylesheets under the rule below, as React does.
The first ten image preloads per flush and every fetchPriority="high" image are placed ahead of the stylesheets; the rest go after the scripts, as in React.
<meta charSet> and <meta name="viewport"> in the shell are hoisted to the start of the head, charset first. Metas with itemProp, metas inside <noscript>, metas streamed in later boundaries, and a Suspense fallback's metas are not hoisted; a fallback's are omitted, as React omits hoistables from fallbacks.
Document mode, <picture> and <noscript> are bits in the walk's shared flags, next to the SVG and adjacent-text bits. Being lexical, they survive a suspended boundary's later render and never leak out of a discarded attempt. A Suspense boundary that buffers a whole document, as children or as a fallback, reports where its <head> opened, so the hints land after the doctype.
Fragment renders are deliberately unchanged. Their root-container hydration adopts nodes by position, so leading hints would mismatch there (React skips unmatched siblings in a root container; Redact does not yet). Document heads are already position-insensitive for hydration, and the new test hydrates the reordered head without recoverable errors. One smaller divergence from React, kept out for size: a non-string sizes is stringified rather than dropped.
Before and after on the issue's reproduction, built package, renderToString and renderToReadableStream give the same head:
<!-- before --><linkrel="stylesheet" href="/a.css" data-precedence="default"/><title>t</title><metacharset="utf-8"/><!-- after --><metacharset="utf-8"/><linkrel="preload" href="/hero.png" as="image" fetchpriority="high"/><linkrel="preload" href="/plain.png" as="image"/><linkrel="stylesheet" href="/a.css" data-precedence="default"/><title>t</title>
React 19.3 emits the same elements in the same order (it spells charSet, fetchPriority and as before href).

Tests
tests/image-preloads.test.tsx covers the head order and the exclusions (lazy, low priority, data URIs, empty src, <picture>, <noscript>, SVG <image>), the responsive imageSrcSet/imageSizes shape, dedupe against a repeated image and against preload(), the ten-image threshold, the synthesised head, the streamed shell, a late boundary keeping its meta in place while emitting its own preload, fragment renders staying as they were, and hydration of the reordered head. 2009 tests pass, tsc --noEmit is clean, the build verifies.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added automatic preload hints for eligible images, helping them load earlier. Lazy-loaded, low-priority, and data-URL images are not preloaded.
Image preload hints are ordered by priority, with eager image hints placed ahead of stylesheets when applicable.
Eligible charset and viewport metadata is emitted at the beginning of the document head, including during streamed rendering.
…etas in document renders
React's server renderer emits a <link rel="preload" as="image"> for every <img>
it renders eagerly and opens <head> with the charset and viewport metas. Redact
rendered the images and metas in place, so the browser only discovered a hero
image once the parser reached it in the body (TanStack#97).
Document renders (an <html> tree, or a synthesised head) now mirror React: an
<img> with a src or srcSet that is not loading="lazy" or fetchPriority="low",
not a data: URI and not inside <picture>, <noscript> or SVG adds an image preload
through the existing resource collector, sharing React's dedupe key with explicit
preload() calls. The first ten per flush and every fetchPriority="high" image go
ahead of the stylesheets, the rest after the scripts. <meta charSet> and
<meta name="viewport"> in the shell are hoisted to the start of the head; metas
streamed in later boundaries stay in place.
Fragment renders are unchanged: their root-container hydration adopts nodes by
position, so leading hints would mismatch there.
Server bundle cost: +308 B gzip source, +310 B built, recorded as an allowance
measured on Node 24.22.0 against main 0c7274e.

Walkthrough
The server renderer now preloads eligible images and places eligible charset and viewport metadata at the start of the document head. Traversal flags exclude images and metadata inside picture and noscript. Tests cover static rendering, streams, Suspense, retries, and hydration.
Changes: SSR resource handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Collect and order resource hints packages/redact/src/server/resource-hints.ts, packages/redact/src/server/dispatcher.ts
The collector filters image preload candidates and places high-priority images and the first ten eager image preloads before stylesheets. Other image preloads follow scripts. It buffers eligible charset and viewport metadata until the head output is drained. The dispatcher routes host resources to the collector.
Connect document traversal to resource collection packages/redact/src/server/walk.ts
The walker records eligible image and metadata elements during document renders. It tracks traversal context, including picture and noscript, to apply the collection rules.
Preserve head resources across streaming and validate output packages/redact/src/server/walk.ts, packages/redact/src/server/stream.ts, tests/image-preloads.test.tsx, .changeset/image-preloads.md, scripts/size-check.mjs
The walker buffers head output and preserves resource metadata during Suspense. The stream renderer resets metadata on shell retries and restores traversal flags on boundary rerenders. Tests cover preload filtering and ordering, streaming, Suspense, retries, and hydration. The changeset documents the behavior, and the size check adds source and built-package allowances.

The stream retries the shell after a root-level suspension and keeps the
resource collector, whose hints deduplicate by key. The charset and viewport
buffers did not, so a retried shell emitted its metas twice. Clear them with
the discarded chunks; test; allowance re-measured (+325 B source, +327 B built).

A Suspense boundary that rendered a charset or viewport meta and then
suspended or threw left the meta in the hoist buffer while its output was
discarded, so the shell carried a meta from content that streams in later with
its own copy. The collector now snapshots the buffers before a boundary's
children and restores them when they are discarded; the shell retry reuses the
same method. The boundary's preloads stay registered, as they deduplicate.
Allowance re-measured (+340 B source, +342 B built).
Preserve the parent traversal state when retrying a boundary.
If a Suspense boundary is inside <picture>, this walk starts with a fresh textState. An image rendered after suspension therefore gets a preload, even though images inside <picture> are excluded. This can fetch the fallback image unnecessarily. Preserve the exclusion state in the boundary snapshot and restore it for this walk. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep standalone fragment heads out of document mode.
renderToString and streaming accept arbitrary children. If a fragment contains <head>, openHead sets document mode. Later eligible images then add preload links, and charset or viewport metas are hoisted. This changes the fragment output used for positional hydration.
Set document mode when walking <html>, not when opening any standalone <head>.

…exclusions
A fragment that renders its own <head> no longer turns on image preloads and
meta hoisting: the document flag is set when <html> opens, which covers both a
real and a synthesised head, so standalone fragments keep their positional
output.
A Suspense boundary records the picture/noscript and SVG flags of its parent,
and the streamed re-render starts from them, so an <img> inside <picture> that
renders after suspension is still not preloaded.
Both outside-diff findings from the last review were valid, fixed in 816f816:
Document mode now starts when <html> opens rather than when any <head> does, so a fragment that renders its own <head> keeps its positional output. A real head and a synthesised one are both covered since each sits under <html>. Test: leaves a fragment that renders its own head alone.
A suspended boundary records its parent's picture/noscript and SVG flags and the streamed re-render starts from them, so an <img> inside <picture> that renders after suspension is still excluded. Test: keeps excluding the images of a picture whose boundary streams later.
Both tests fail on 662f625 and pass now. redact/server is 9329 B gz src / 9325 B gz dist (+354 / +351 over main), allowance and description updated.
Upgrade high-priority images that reuse an existing preload.

…back charset and viewport metas
An eager <img> whose image was already registered with preload() moves that
preload ahead of the stylesheets when it is fetchPriority="high" or one of the
first ten per flush, keeping the preload's own attributes, as React does.
A Suspense fallback's charset and viewport metas are omitted instead of hoisted
into the head, as React omits hoistables from fallbacks. Its images are still
preloaded.
On the outside-diff finding (upgrade high-priority images that reuse an existing preload): valid, fixed in 015eb57, with one difference from the suggestion. React promotes a preload() image into highImagePreloads when an eager <img> of the same key renders with fetchPriority="high" or while fewer than ten high preloads exist, but it leaves the preload's attributes alone, so no fetchpriority="high" is added. Verified against react-dom 19.3.1: preload('/explicit.png', { as: 'image' }) followed by <img src="/explicit.png"> emits the preload before the stylesheet without a fetchpriority attribute. The collector now does the same, and the existing dedupe test asserts the promoted order. redact/server is 9376 B gz src / 9374 B gz dist (+401 / +400 over main); allowance and description updated.
Restore document state after a discarded Suspense child.
When a fragment Suspense child opens <html> and suspends, the discarded traversal leaves currentSSRFrame().document set to true. The fallback then loses charset and viewport metadata, while an eligible fallback image is registered and emitted as a preload. Later fragment siblings also inherit document mode and can be hoisted or preloaded.
Capture the document state before walking props.children and restore it before walking props.fallback. A committed document fallback preserves true.

walkSuspense saves the frame's document flag with its meta buffers before
walking the children and restores it when they suspend or throw, so a fragment
whose boundary rendered <html> before suspending keeps its fallback and later

If a resolved Suspense boundary wraps <html>, onHead records the outer output position while the document is still in childParts. renderToString then inserts automatically collected metas and preloads before the doctype. The browser can enter quirks mode. Record the head position relative to the buffer and apply it when committing the boundary.

…its head hints after the doctype
The boundary buffers its children, so <head> reported the outer output
position before the document had been emitted and the renderer inserted the
collected hints ahead of <!DOCTYPE html>. walkSuspense now records where <head>
opened inside its buffer and reports it to the renderer as it commits the
children. This also moves stylesheets that main already placed before the
doctype in this case.
On the outside-diff finding (preserve the head position inside buffered Suspense children): valid, fixed in 44af8fb. walkSuspense now records where <head> opened inside its buffer and reports it to the renderer as it commits the children, so both renderToString and the stream insert the hints after the doctype. This was already happening on main for precedence stylesheets in the same case, and the fix moves those too. Test: inserts the head hints after the doctype of a document wrapped in a resolved boundary, which covers both renderers and fails before the change. redact/server is now 9423 B gz src and 9422 B gz dist, +448 over main for each. The allowance and description are updated.

When a fragment Suspense child suspends, its fallback can open <html> and set currentSSRFrame().document to true. The code restores this flag before rendering the fallback, but not after it. A following charset or viewport meta can therefore be sent to the document head instead of its fragment position.
Restore the saved value after the fallback walk. A document render keeps true, so a committed document fallback still retains its image preloads.

Do not inherit onHead while walking a buffered fallback.
walkSuspense buffers fallback output in fallbackParts, but the fallback currently inherits the parent onHead callback. A fallback <head> therefore records the parent output offset before the fallback is emitted. renderToString and streaming then insert drained hints at that pre-fallback offset.

…e and leaves no document mode behind
The fallback walk records where <head> opened inside its buffer, as the
children walk does, and reports it to the renderer when the fallback is
emitted, so a fallback that renders the whole document no longer gets the
collected hints ahead of <!DOCTYPE html>. The frame's document flag is restored
after the fallback walk too, so later siblings of a fragment stay positional.
emitBoundary is folded into the fallback path, which shares a small emitParts
helper with the committed-children path.
Both outside-diff findings from the review of 44af8fb were valid, fixed in 64fc4ce:
Document mode after a fallback. The frame's document flag is now restored after the fallback walk as well as before it, so a fallback that opened <html> no longer hoists the charset or viewport meta of a later fragment sibling. Test: keeps a fragment out of document mode after a fallback that opened html.
onHead inside a buffered fallback. The fallback no longer inherits the parent's onHead. It records where <head> opened in its own buffer, the same way the children walk does, and reports that position when the fallback is emitted. A fallback that renders the whole document now gets its hints after the doctype instead of ahead of it. Test: inserts the head hints after the doctype of a document fallback, which uses the error path where the fallback is emitted bare.
Both tests fail on 44af8fb. emitBoundary is folded into the fallback path and shares a small helper with the committed-children path. With that, redact/server is 9425 B gz src (+450) and 9422 B gz dist (+448).

The shared bit 4 prevents both images and metadata from reaching recordHoisted. This keeps image preloads out of picture, but it also leaves charset and viewport metas inside picture instead of moving them to head.
Use separate flags. Keep images blocked by both flags. Block metadata only inside noscript. Update all reset masks and suspended-boundary textBits capture.
Apply the 5 to 13 reset change to each traversal reset in walk.ts.

…oscript get separate bits
Document mode was a frame-wide flag set when <html> opened, so walkSuspense
had to save and restore it around discarded children and fallbacks, and a
boundary nested in a document fallback lost it when it streamed later. It is
now bit 16 of the walk's shared flags, set for the children of <html>. Like the
SVG bit it is captured in a suspended boundary's textBits and cannot leak out of
a discarded attempt, so the save/restore code and SSRFrame.document are gone.
<picture> and <noscript> get separate bits (4 and 8). Images are still not
preloaded inside either, but charset and viewport metas inside <picture> are
hoisted, as React only keeps metas in place inside <noscript>.
On the outside-diff finding (split the picture and noscript traversal flags): valid, fixed in 6ea7604. React's pushMeta only keeps metas in place inside <noscript>, while pushImg skips both. <picture> is now bit 4 and <noscript> bit 8. Images skip both, and charset and viewport metas are only kept in place inside <noscript>. Test: hoists the metas inside a picture, as React does, but not its images.
The same commit moves document mode into the shared flags too, as bit 16 (see the inline reply). Both new tests fail on 64fc4ce. redact/server is now 9438 B gz src and 9437 B gz dist, +463 over main for each, and the description is brought up to date.

A charset or viewport meta hoisted out of a text run left the text before and
after it adjacent, so the browser parsed one text node where the client renders
two. The walk now emits the text separator in its place when the previous
sibling was text, as React's pushMeta does.

Fixes #97.
React's server renderer emits a
<link rel="preload" as="image">for every<img>it renders eagerly and opens<head>with the charset and viewport metas (pushImgandpushMetainReactFizzConfigDOM). Redact rendered both in place, so the browser only discovered a page's hero image once the parser reached it in the body, and a long stylesheet list or title could push<meta charset>past the 1024-byte window. What changes
In a document render (an
<html>tree, or one whose head Redact synthesises), the walk now feeds<img>and<meta>through the existing resource collector:<img>with asrcorsrcSetthat is notloading="lazy"orfetchPriority="low", is not adata:URI and is not inside<picture>,<noscript>or SVG adds apreloadresource with React's attribute set (imageSrcSet/imageSizesinstead ofhreffor responsive images, pluscrossOrigin, integrity, type, fetchPriority, referrerPolicy). It shares the collector's dedupe key with explicitpreload()calls, so rendering the same image twice, or after preloading it, emits one link. An eager<img>moves an earlierpreload()of the same image ahead of the stylesheets under the rule below, as React does.fetchPriority="high"image are placed ahead of the stylesheets; the rest go after the scripts, as in React.<meta charSet>and<meta name="viewport">in the shell are hoisted to the start of the head, charset first. Metas withitemProp, metas inside<noscript>, metas streamed in later boundaries, and a Suspense fallback's metas are not hoisted; a fallback's are omitted, as React omits hoistables from fallbacks.<picture>and<noscript>are bits in the walk's shared flags, next to the SVG and adjacent-text bits. Being lexical, they survive a suspended boundary's later render and never leak out of a discarded attempt. A Suspense boundary that buffers a whole document, as children or as a fallback, reports where its<head>opened, so the hints land after the doctype.Fragment renders are deliberately unchanged. Their root-container hydration adopts nodes by position, so leading hints would mismatch there (React skips unmatched siblings in a root container; Redact does not yet). Document heads are already position-insensitive for hydration, and the new test hydrates the reordered head without recoverable errors.
