Why

  • Smaller end-user bundles. In the same minified React editor consumer build, total emitted JavaScript drops from 1,351,163 to 677,111 bytes gzip (49.9% smaller). The incremental cost of diagram support drops from 951,477 to 277,425 bytes gzip (70.8% smaller). The initial static-import closure drops from 443,913 to 304,745 bytes gzip (31.4% smaller).
  • Server-side rendering. Pele renders SVG without a browser DOM. Typst/PDF diagram mappings now work on the server by default, without an external Mermaid service or headless browser.
  • Better integrated theming. Diagrams inherit BlockNote's light/dark/custom theme, including Mantine and Ariakit; Shadcn maps its semantic/chart tokens directly. Color changes update the existing SVG through CSS, without rerendering it.

Changes

  • Replace the Mermaid runtime entirely with Pele's lazy renderer, retaining Mermaid source and Markdown interchange. There is no Mermaid fallback or runtime dependency.
  • Share one typed rendering adapter between editor previews and exporters. Invalid source remains an expected error value; unexpected failures propagate.
  • Remove Mermaid initialization, DOM measurement/trimming, and SVG font-rewriting workarounds. Pass the font into Pele for both measurement and rendering.
  • Simplify server SVG export and resolve CSS-variable defaults to literal presentation values for standalone SVG consumers, including Typst.
  • Keep PNG rasterization for DOCX/ODT/email compatibility. Their default rasterization still needs browser canvas; server callers can supply a custom rasterizer. Exported diagrams use a standalone palette, not the editor's live CSS theme.
  • Add browserless rendering and live theme coverage, and update the diagram documentation.
  • Independent reviews led to removing the redundant preview async wrapper, duplicated font defaults, obsolete constant-only helper, redundant error reconstruction, and a one-use ODT message wrapper. SVG export adapter tests now run in Node instead of the browser suite. Document the removed public helper APIs explicitly.

Compatibility

Stored diagram source does not need migration, but rendering is not pixel-identical: Pele has its own layout and CSS-variable styling. Mermaid theme configuration, raw HTML labels, and external diagram plugins are not carried over. Mermaid-specific initialization/font-rewrite helpers are removed. Existing popup interaction is unchanged; this does not fix #3138 / #3148.

Bundle measurements compare Mermaid 11.16.0 with Pele 1.5.2 using Vite+ 0.3.3, the same minified React editor fixture, and gzip level 9 per emitted JavaScript chunk. CSS, fonts, and non-JavaScript assets are excluded. “All chunks” includes lazy diagram types and optional editor features; “initial” excludes dynamically fetched chunks, including those requested while mounting the first diagram. Neither is a claim about the complete first-page network download. Brotli totals likewise drop from 1,134,443 to 573,866 bytes (49.4%). No benchmark scripts are added to the repository.

Validation

  • Package builds pass, including all diagram/exporter dependencies.
  • All 45 diagram-block unit tests pass, including real server-side SVG/Typst/PDF/UA-1 compilation for flowchart, sequence, class, state, pie, and journey diagrams.
  • A separate plain-Node export against the built packages (no window or document) generated a real three-page PDF using pdfStandard: "ua-1", containing all six diagram families. Inspected the rendered pages and PDF structure: tagged document, English language, document title, PDF/UA-1 XMP declaration, and six Figures with the diagram source as alternative text (the same accessibility mapping as before). This is not independent veraPDF or screen-reader certification.
  • Pre-commit formatting, lint, and type checks pass.
  • Refreshed and visually reviewed the three desktop email baselines and the changed PDF page. Targeted email tests pass in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; real PDF rendering and snapshots pass in Chromium. The unexpected-rejection/expected-source-error regression cases pass in Chromium and WebKit.
  • All CI checks pass on 1e96953df, including build/unit/type checks, all six desktop browser shards, all three PDF browser jobs, security checks, and previews. The optional bundle-size check is skipped.
  • The additional local Docker sweep was stopped at the author's request after CI passed. Chromium shard 1 and the PDF group passed locally; shard 2 hit a browser-connection shutdown before executing tests. The incomplete local sweep is not presented as passing.

📝 Walkthrough

The diagram block replaces direct Mermaid rendering with Pele through a shared adapter. SVG rendering and Typst exports now support server-side execution. PNG exports still use browser canvas by default, with custom rasterizers available for server-side use. Editor and Shadcn theme tokens map to Pele variables.

Changes: Diagram rendering and exports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared Pele renderer and preview
packages/diagram-block/package.json, docs/package.json, packages/diagram-block/src/helpers/*, packages/diagram-block/src/block/*
The diagram block replaces Mermaid-specific rendering helpers with renderDiagram and updates the preview hook to use it. Preview handling distinguishes diagram-source errors from unexpected rendering failures. Tests use the shared renderer mock and cover error-boundary behavior.
SVG sizing and export rendering
packages/diagram-block/src/helpers/*
SVG rendering uses the shared adapter, resolves CSS variables in selected presentation attributes, and sets root dimensions from render results. Tests cover browserless rendering, scaling, fonts, errors, colors, and accessibility identifiers.
Exporter defaults and rendering guidance
packages/diagram-block/src/typst-exporter/*, packages/diagram-block/src/{docx-exporter,email-exporter,odt-exporter}/*, packages/diagram-block/src/exporterTestUtil.ts, docs/content/docs/features/blocks/diagrams.mdx, tests/src/end-to-end/exporters/*, tests/vite.config.browser.ts
Typst uses SVG rendering by default, including on the server. DOCX, ODT, and email documentation and error messages describe browser-based PNG rasterization and the custom renderer required for server-side rasterization. Tests cover server-rendered Typst output.
Editor and framework theme mappings
packages/react/src/editor/styles.css, packages/shadcn/src/style.css, packages/diagram-block/src/block/diagramTheme.browser.test.ts, docs/content/docs/features/blocks/diagrams.mdx
Editor and Shadcn styles map theme tokens to Pele variables. Browser tests cover theme switching, token mapping, overrides, and fallback colors. Documentation describes renderer compatibility and theming.

5-5: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Module-level diagramId counter can collide across module instances.

diagramId is local to this module. If two bundles load the module, both produce bn-diagram-0. Two inline SVGs on one page then share the same IDs. This breaks aria-labelledby and url(#...) references. The ID reset also happens on every module reload during HMR. Consider adding a random or per-editor component to the prefix. This is a low-probability edge case.

-let diagramId = 0;
+let diagramId = 0;
+const instanceId = Math.random().toString(36).slice(2, 8);
...
-      idPrefix: `bn-diagram-${diagramId++}`,
+      idPrefix: `bn-diagram-${instanceId}-${diagramId++}`,
