Summary

  • Add best-effort Word and Google Docs cleanup to the default external HTML clipboard handler.
  • Convert Word list paragraphs to nested lists and remove paragraph-end artifacts without dropping empty paragraphs.
  • Preserve Google Docs blank paragraphs without changing inline hard breaks.
  • Keep unsupported labels as text. Custom paste behavior uses the existing pasteHandler API.

Verification

  • Core suite: 103 files passed, 1,359 tests passed, 20 expected failures, 9 existing skips.
  • Format-conversion suite: 694 tests passed with unchanged snapshots.
  • Docker: 57 Office clipboard tests passed across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; 9 existing Chromium clipboard tests passed. Retries disabled.
  • Core production build, type-aware lint, formatting, and diff checks passed.
  • Documentation links and isolated MDX compilation/render passed. Full Next.js preview remains blocked by the existing generated supported-formats.mdx.js module-resolution error.
  • Independent simplification review completed with no remaining blockers.

Related: #2356 and #449. Inspired by stilo-editor's paste handling.

📝 Walkthrough

The editor now supports configurable preprocessing for Word and Google Docs HTML. Numbered-list parsing, indexing, splitting, and HTML serialization preserve explicit list starts, including zero.

Changes: Office HTML handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Office HTML normalization
packages/core/src/api/parsers/html/preprocessHTML.ts
The default preprocessor detects Word and Google Docs HTML. It converts supported Word list paragraphs into nested lists and preserves selected blank paragraphs.
Preprocessor configuration and paste paths
packages/core/src/api/parsers/html/parseHTML.ts, packages/core/src/editor/BlockNoteEditor.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExportManager.ts, packages/core/src/index.ts, packages/core/src/api/parsers/html/officeHTML.browser.test.ts, docs/content/docs/reference/editor/paste-handling.mdx
The editor can configure or disable preprocessing for HTML parsing. Tests and documentation describe normalization, configuration, and paste-path exceptions.
Numbered-list parsing and numbering
packages/core/src/blocks/ListItem/NumberedListItem/*, packages/core/src/api/blockManipulation/commands/splitBlock/splitBlock.ts, packages/core/src/api/exporters/html/internalHTMLSerializer.ts, packages/core/src/api/exporters/html/util/serializeBlocksExternalHTML.ts, packages/core/src/blocks/ListItem/NumberedListItem/IndexingPlugin.node.test.ts
The parser reads valid starts from the containing ordered list. Indexing, block splitting, and HTML serialization preserve explicit starts. Tests cover numbering updates, splitting, and HTML round trips.

Some Wingdings bullets may paste as paragraphs rather than nested list items. The text remains available, so this is a bounded issue to accept or address before merging.

A rabbit pastes a list with care,
Word’s nested numbers settle there.
Blank lines stay, and starts remain,
Zero joins the counting chain.
I hop through HTML, neat and bright,
Then nibble clover by moonlight.

Recognize Wingdings markers without accepting arbitrary characters

When Word HTML places § in an mso-list:Ignore span, trim() leaves it as one character. The current allowlist rejects it, keeps the marker in the paragraph, and clears stack. This can break nesting for later list items.

Do not accept every single nonnumeric code point. That would classify arbitrary labels as bullets. Recognize the known Wingdings markers only when the marker span declares the Wingdings font.

Suggested fix
     marker = marker.trim();
+    const wingdingsMarker = markers.some((span) =>
+      /\bfont-family\s*:\s*(?:"Wingdings"|'Wingdings'|Wingdings)(?:\s*[,;]|$)/iu.test(
+        span.getAttribute("style") ?? "",
+      ),
+    );
     const numericMarker = marker.match(/^(?:([0-9]+)[.)]|\(([0-9]+)\))$/);
@@
     if (
-      (!ordered && marker && !/^[·•o▪●○■□‣⁃\-\uF000-\uF8FF]$/u.test(marker)) ||
+      (!ordered &&
+        marker &&
+        !(
+          /^[·•o▪●○■□‣⁃\-\uF000-\uF8FF]$/u.test(marker) ||
+          (wingdingsMarker && /^[§Øü]$/u.test(marker))
+        )) ||

Add a regression test for a level-three § marker and a following item to verify that the list remains nested.

Cool. This is mostly about lists right? Do we know if there are other concepts that we can improve? should we have more testing documents / feed a suite of docx / google docs?
