fix(core): install nested extension plugins at runtime - #3236
Fixes#3175. Registering an extension at runtime previously recorded its nested blockNoteExtensions but installed only the parent plugin set. For CollaborationExtension, this left the sync plugins uninstalled, so local edits never reached the shared Yjs document and could disappear on reload.
Install plugins and mount hooks for every newly registered nested extension.
Order runtime plugins by their dependencies, including sync-before-cursor initialization, and preserve that order after remounting.
Remove obsolete parent dependency declarations during replacement.
Run cleanup after plugin removal and guard pending mount hooks so reentrant registrations/removals are not overwritten.
Preserve existing plugin-state resets used by version previews, factory lookups, and registrations made inside factories.
The candidate-registry rollback refactor was removed after review found it introduced lookup and reentrant-registration regressions. This PR does not add transactional rollback guarantees or support runtime schema/input-rule changes.
Stack
Stacked on #3229. The base is enhance-version-history-sidebar-navigation-and-restore; merge that PR first, then retarget this PR to main.
Supersedes #3178 with the fix applied on top of the current extension lifecycle and version-preview behavior. Close#3178 when this replacement lands.
Verification
457 passing unit tests across the extension manager, both collaboration bindings, and versioning, with 20 expected failures and 6 skipped tests.
Generic nested-plugin initialization and rebuild regression tests, plus lifecycle tests consolidated into ExtensionManager.test.ts using jsdom.
Red-first collision regression from review: duplicate plugin keys must be rejected, not silently remove an unrelated installed plugin.
Type-aware lint, formatting, and git diff --check passed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved runtime extension mounting and cleanup when extensions are added, replaced, removed, or the editor is remounted.
Plugin updates better preserve dependency order and unrelated plugins, while preventing conflicting plugins from replacing an existing one.
Extensions removed during another extension’s mount or cleanup are handled more consistently.
Runtime plugin registrations made during extension setup are included in the updated plugin set, and replacing an extension clears obsolete dependency relationships.
Runtime plugin collection uses dependency priority. Replacement filters existing plugins by reference or key, then applies the ordered runtime plugin set. Tests cover dependency order, replacement, and rebuilds.
Mounting and cleanup packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/index.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/ExtensionManager.test.ts, packages/core/src/editor/managers/ExtensionManager/ExtensionManager.browser.test.ts
Mounting skips headless editors and extensions that are unregistered or already mounted. Tests cover cleanup, re-registration, removal during mounting, and remounting. The browser lifecycle test was removed.

Explanation
[#3175, #3178] replaceExtension now adds all extensions introduced by recursive blockNoteExtensions registration. It collects their plugins and rebuilds the runtime plugin list. getExtensionPriority() orders nested dependencies before parents, including sync before cursor. getRuntimePlugins() uses the same order during remounts. This installs the collaboration sub-extension plugins required for Yjs synchronization. The added lifecycle and runtime registration tests cover nested plugin ordering, factory registration, plugin replacement, cleanup, and remount behavior. The linked issues' coding requirements are met.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed implementation stays within runtime extension registration, replacement, removal, plugin ordering, cleanup, and mount lifecycle behavior covered by [#3175, #3178]. The plugin-key handling, dependency-edge cleanup, reentrant registration guards, and lifecycle tests support those objectives. The extracted priority helper supports both initialization and runtime remount behavior. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated in the reviewed changes.

A failed plugin update leaves the registry changed and breaks later plugin rebuilds.
addExtension, runtimeExtensions.add and getProsemirrorPluginsFromExtension commit the new extension to the registry before updatePlugins runs. reconfigure can then throw, for example when a plugin with a different instance but an existing key is registered. The new test at Lines 108-121 of ExtensionManager.node.test.ts covers this case.
After the throw, the new extension stays in this.extensions, runtimeExtensions and extensionPlugins. getRuntimePlugins() still returns its plugin. Two paths then rebuild with the colliding plugin and throw again:
Tiptap remounts, which read blocknote-runtime-extensions through getRuntimePlugins.
Every later registerExtension, replaceExtension or unregisterExtension.
The test only checks the state right after the throw. It never calls rebuildPlugins afterwards, so it does not detect this.
The PR says it does not add transactional rollback. A narrow cleanup for newly registered extensions is still worth adding. It would remove them from the registry when updatePlugins throws and then rethrow. Without it, one bad registration can make the editor unusable.

Abort removed extension controllers when reconfiguration fails.
replaceExtension removes the controller, then calls updatePlugins before aborting it. A replacement with a plugin key that conflicts with an unrelated installed plugin makes ProseMirror reconfiguration throw. The removed extension's mount cleanup then does not run. Cleanup for newly registered extensions cannot clean the removed controller.
