security: tighten redirects, login counting, user search, section toggles and profile fields - #293
redirect_header() checks the target before its preloads run, so the System preload's own redirect no longer skips the local-URL check. Protector counts every password login against the submitted name, including the password 0, and an autologin cookie no longer replaces it. The CAPTCHA allows exactly the configured number of attempts.
The user picker lets only administrators match or sort on hidden e-mail addresses. The System section switch accepts only existing sections from someone allowed to administer them. Registration and a member's own profile edit no longer write identity, credential, rank, post-count or date columns through profile fields; webmasters keep their own rank.
Summary by Sourcery
Harden redirects, authentication protections, administrative section access, user search privacy, and profile field writes.
Bug Fixes:
Validate redirect targets before preload handlers process them.
Count password login failures against the submitted username, including passwords set to "0", without allowing autologin cookies to override the name.
Enforce the configured CAPTCHA attempt limit precisely.
Restrict non-administrator user searches and sorting to publicly visible email addresses.
Require valid System sections and appropriate permissions before processing section toggles.
Prevent registration and self-service profile edits from changing protected account fields while preserving webmaster rank management.
Tests:
Add coverage for redirect validation, login brute-force counting, CAPTCHA limits, user search privacy, System section permissions, and protected profile fields.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Redirect destinations are validated and normalized before redirect-related events run, preventing those events from handling unvalidated destinations.
Non-administrator email searches now return only users whose email addresses are public.
Login-attempt tracking uses the submitted username and counts valid credential pairs consistently. CAPTCHA challenges stop accepting attempts once the configured limit is reached.
System section changes require the appropriate authorization.
Profile updates and registration no longer overwrite protected account details; administrators can still update rank.

This PR tightens several security-sensitive request paths by validating redirects before preloads, making login and CAPTCHA limits precise, restricting hidden-email searches and System section toggles by authorization, and preventing profile forms from writing protected account fields, with targeted contract tests covering the new guards.

Changes
Redirect target validation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate redirect targets before preloads htdocs/include/functions.php, tests/unit/htdocs/ControllerHardeningContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
redirect_header() validates the target before firing preload events. Contract tests check the ordering. The changelog records the change.
Non-administrator email searches and sorts require user_viewemail = 1. Contract tests check the filter before the count query. The changelog records the change.
Protector login-attempt counting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Count attempts against the submitted login htdocs/xoops_lib/modules/protector/include/postcheck_functions.php, htdocs/xoops_lib/modules/protector/class/protector.php, tests/unit/htdocs/ControllerHardeningContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Brute-force checks use the POST username before falling back to the autologin cookie. Credential checks compare against empty strings, so a password of "0" qualifies. Contract tests check both behaviors.
CAPTCHA attempt limits
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enforce the configured attempt limit htdocs/class/captcha/xoopscaptcha.php, tests/unit/htdocs/ControllerHardeningContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Verification and rendering treat the limit as reached when failures equal the configured maximum. Contract tests check both comparisons.
The profile field handler lists protected account fields. Registration skips protected fields when applying defaults and submitted values. Profile editing skips protected fields, except for rank for administrators. Tests check the protected set and write paths.
System section authorization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate and authorize section toggles htdocs/modules/system/admin.php, tests/unit/htdocs/ControllerHardeningContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
The handler validates the section and checks authorization for its category before toggling it. Invalid or unauthorized requests receive HTTP 403 and Forbidden. Contract tests check the validation and authorization order.
Fix the failing redirect test and prevent administrator self-edits from changing protected identity fields before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the security hardening theme and the main areas touched: redirects, login counting, user search, section toggles and profile fields. The changeset covers each of these, so the title is accurate, though it lists many items and is broad. It also omits the CAPTCHA attempt-limit change, which is a minor omission. The title is a single line and avoids file lists and vague terms.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 83.33% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 11 files.

Three critical contract-test assertions do not match the production code’s multiline formatting, so the test suite fails until those expectations are corrected or made whitespace-tolerant.

🔵 Needs a closer look
The broad security-sensitive changes across redirects, authentication throttling, CAPTCHA state, delegated admin permissions, and account writes require integration and deployment-configuration validation beyond the available static and source-contract tests.

Split the redirect contract test into ordered checks.
htdocs/include/functions.php places the condition and fallback assignment on separate lines, so the current needle never matches and assertNotFalse($local) fails.

Block protected identity writes in administrator self-edit requests.
An administrator op=save request reaches lines 46-48 before the protected-field guard. The request can set uname and email on the current user object. The later exception permits only rank, so these identity writes violate the self-edit contract. Remove the direct assignments.
