Walkthrough
The 2.7.5 changes update authentication, session handling, output filtering, menu and template behavior, redirects, and file operations. Unit tests and the changelog cover these changes.
LDAP and ADS authentication reject empty passwords and use submitted password strings. Bypass, provisioning, and member username lookups use string-based matching. Popup login uses configured authentication, and the legacy MD5 fallback applies only to local authentication.
Session restoration and lifetime htdocs/include/common.php, htdocs/kernel/session.php, tests/unit/htdocs/include/SessionRestoreActiveCheckTest.php, tests/unit/htdocs/kernel/XoopsSessionHandlerTest.php, tests/unit/htdocs/FilesCookiesAndFiltersContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Remember-me restoration rotates the session ID before assigning the user. Session reads and validation reject expired rows, and writes update rows observed during reads. Custom session lifetime settings also apply when the SSL session bridge is used.
The installer derives the Secure cookie option from HTTPS indicators and rotates the session when required. Custom session-cookie setup follows the configured Secure setting and sets HttpOnly.
Output Filtering and Encoding

Summary
BBCode and text filtering htdocs/class/module.textsanitizer.php, htdocs/class/textsanitizer/*, htdocs/class/textsanitizer/textfilter/textfilter.php, tests/unit/htdocs/class/MyTextSanitizer*Test.php, tests/unit/htdocs/FilesCookiesAndFiltersContractTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
BBCode patterns restrict characters in URL, font, and email arguments. Clickable image links use an href-based handler. The text filter uses bundled HTMLPurifier when available.
Script and popup output htdocs/class/logger/render.php, htdocs/modules/system/preloads/core.php, tests/unit/htdocs/class/logger/*, tests/unit/htdocs/modules/system/RedirectMessageEncodingTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Logger lines and redirect messages are encoded before insertion into scripts.
Form and administration output htdocs/class/xoopsform/renderer/*, htdocs/modules/profile/include/forms.php, htdocs/modules/system/admin/groupperm.php, htdocs/class/xoopseditor/tinymce5/js/tinymce/plugins/xoopsemoticons/plugin.js, htdocs/class/xoopseditor/tinymce7/js/tinymce/plugins/xoopsemoticons/plugin.js, tests/unit/htdocs/class/xoopsforms/XoopsFormTextDateSelectTest.php, tests/unit/htdocs/class/xoopseditor/EmoticonInsertEncodingTest.php, tests/unit/htdocs/modules/system/RedirectMessageEncodingTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Date values, profile option labels, and permission messages are escaped before rendering. TinyMCE emoticon images use encoded attribute values.
Menu, Template, and Cache Handling

Menu affixes and URL checks htdocs/class/theme.php, htdocs/modules/system/admin/menus/main.php, tests/unit/htdocs/class/MenuAffixAndUrlFilterTest.php, tests/unit/htdocs/modules/system/SystemMenusRegressionTest.php, docs/changelog.270.txt
Menu affixes pass through an HTMLPurifier allowlist. Menu administration removes tabs and line breaks before checking URL schemes.
Unregistered template names resolve only to allowed files under configured XOOPS roots. Smarty debugging follows its audience setting. Page-cache IDs use the full SHA-256 URI digest, and private-message pages disable module caching.
Snoopy retains redirect state for same-origin targets and clears credentials and cookies when the origin changes. Submit redirects use GET when the target contains a query or differs in origin.
File and Upload Handling

Upload sanitization also updates a set target filename and sanitizes the final saved name. Generated template directories use mode 0755.
Protector writes the administrator IP allowlist through its atomic writer with in-place fallback disabled. Optional purifier filters skip password fields and process values containing <.

This PR applies broad security hardening across authentication, sessions, sanitization, template and cache isolation, output encoding, redirects, uploads, cookies, filesystem writes, and optional filtering, with focused regression coverage for the new security contracts.
Drop credentials and cookie state on cross-origin Snoopy redirects.
Sanitize the actual upload target name, use restrictive template directory modes, atomically replace the Protector allowlist, and secure installer/custom-session cookies.
Run optional HTML purification for short markup values instead of bypassing them.
Record the release-level security changes in the changelog.
Add the hardening changes to the version 2.7.0 changelog.

Fixed in 40521a3: provisioning add() and change() now hash the password exactly as the directory bind accepted it (no stripslashes(), no trim()); change() never stores an empty one. Test: XoopsAuthProvisionningTest::changeKeepsTheStoredHashWhileThePasswordIsUnchanged (a\nb no longer verifies as anb).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 40521a3: getXoopsUser() keeps only the account whose name equals the directory name apart from case (mb_strtolower, as the bypass list folds), so an accent-insensitive collation can no longer map admín onto the local admin. With no exact account, provisioning's insert hits the unique key and the sign-in fails closed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 40521a3: both branches of submit() now go through _followSubmitRedirect(), which re-posts the form only to the same origin; another origin (or a target with a query string) is followed with fetch(), so no body or file is replayed. Test: SnoopyTest::aSubmitRedirectNeverPostsTheFormToAnotherOrigin.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 40521a3: level 2 now checks $xoopsUser->isAdmin(1) (system administrators), the same right the logger gate sees before $xoopsUserIsAdmin is replaced by the module's admin right. Contract test updated.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 40521a3: the pattern uses a lookahead (/\.php(?=\.)/i), so shell.php.php.jpg becomes shell_php_php.jpg, and _copyFile() sanitizes the final name again after the character strip, before move_uploaded_file() (shell.p#hp.jpg no longer becomes shell.php.jpg). Tests in UploaderRandomFilenameSanitizeTest.

Fixed in 40521a3: the bundled HTMLPurifier result now flows on into the configured tags / patterns from config.textfilter.php instead of returning early.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 40521a3: the custom session name and lifetime are applied first, unconditionally, and the SSL bridge only supplies the session ID afterwards, so a bridge POST uses the configured gc_maxlifetime too.

No change. Captions are HTML by the form renderer contract: Bootstrap 3/4/5 and Legacy print getCaption() raw, and modules put markup (required markers, <br>, entities from language constants) in captions. Escaping at the data source is the boundary that keeps those renderers safe; escaping inside the renderers would break that contract for every module. The Tailwind renderer escaping one caption path is the outlier and will be aligned separately.

No change: this repository runs PHPUnit ^11.2 only (composer global require phpunit/phpunit:^11.2 in ci.yml, also for --prefer-lowest), and the suite uses attribute data providers throughout; PHPUnit 9.6 is not a supported runner here.

… redirects and allowlist writes
Address review round 1 on XOOPS#296: provisioning keeps the bound password and maps directory names exactly; user names are looked up as bounded strings; Snoopy re-posts forms only to the same origin; the Smarty console checks system-admin rights; uploads sanitize every inner extension and the final saved name; resource.db checks the resolved file's extension; Protector writes the IP allowlist through its atomic writer with no in-place fallback; the text filter keeps site rules after HTMLPurifier; optional purify filters skip password fields; custom session lifetime applies to the SSL bridge; installer and custom-session cookies follow the Secure policy; tests made behavioural and isolated.
--no-verify: the pre-commit superglobal check flags the two optional Protector purify filters, whose purpose is to rewrite $_POST in place before modules read it (they already assigned $_POST before this change); Xmf\Request offers no write path that leaves $_REQUEST untouched.

Coordinate remember-me revocation with logout.
435-435: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Coordinate remember-me revocation with logout.
Logout only expires the remember-me cookie in its response. It does not revoke the token server-side. A concurrent request that already carries the old cookie can still authenticate.
This race existed before the PR: the restoring request could write authenticated data back to the old session ID after logout. The PR materially worsens it. The restoring request now rotates to a new ID, and the handler can insert that new row even after logout deletes the old row. The request can therefore create an authenticated session after logout and renew the remember-me cookie.
Use an atomic revocation mechanism or coordinate remember-me restoration with logout so an in-flight request cannot create an authenticated session after revocation.

Short-circuit the audience match when Smarty debugging is disabled.
For debugLevel 2, XoopsTpl::__construct() calls XoopsUser::isAdmin(1) before it checks debug_mode. checkRight() reaches a permission count query for non-admin group lists, so this added work can occur on every XoopsTpl construction even when debugging is disabled. The base revision did not perform this check.
Keep the audience map before the gate, as required by TemplateDebugAndPageCacheContractTest, but short-circuit the match:

In XoopsTpl::__construct(), prevent the debug-audience match from evaluating
unless Smarty debugging is enabled by short-circuiting it with debug_mode. Keep
the audience map before the existing gate to preserve the

Validate the final saved extension before moving the upload.
If targetFileName is set to shell.ph#p for an accepted photo.jpg upload, character stripping produces shell.php. sanitizeExtensionsIn() intentionally leaves that final extension unchanged. The content checks do not validate the extension of savedFileName, and _copyFile() moves it without a final-extension policy check. If the upload directory executes PHP, this can store an upload under an executable name. Reject final extensions that are not permitted for the validated upload before move_uploaded_file().

Validate the final extension of savedFileName after sanitizeExtensionsIn() and
before _copyFile() reaches move_uploaded_file(); reject it unless it is
permitted for the validated upload, using the existing extension policy and
preserving the upload’s content checks.

Apply the newly saved Secure policy to the new cookie.
When an administrator enables use_mysession and session_cookie_secure in the same request, session_get_cookie_params()['secure'] can still contain the old session policy. The new session_cookie_secure value is saved in the handler, but it does not update the current session cookie parameters. Passing null to xoops_setcookie() can then rely on protocol detection and issue a non-Secure cookie behind a TLS proxy without forwarded protocol headers.
Use the submitted or saved session_cookie_secure value when creating this cookie.

Create the temporary symlink in a test-owned temporary directory.
The current path can make this test skip when XOOPS_ROOT_PATH is not writable. XOOPS_VAR_PATH is defined, but the unit bootstrap only sets it to XOOPS_ROOT_PATH . '/xoops_data'; it does not create or verify that directory. Use a temporary test directory instead.
Smarty_Resource_Db::templateFile() resolves the link to mainfile.dist.php and rejects the resolved .php extension, so changing the link's parent does not change the assertion.

Directory sign-in binds with the password as submitted and refuses an empty one; the bypass list matches exactly, and a digit-only user name matches only that account. The popup login uses the configured provider, and the upgrade wizard's legacy fallback runs only for local accounts.
Sessions refuse expired rows on every lookup, never re-insert a row a parallel logout removed, and a remember-me login starts a fresh session ID.
BBCode arguments that become attributes cannot hold brackets, image URLs are http(s) or paths, and font names cannot rebuild CSS delimiters. Unregistered db: template names read only template files inside the XOOPS directories; Smarty debugging follows the debug audience; the page cache keys URLs by their full digest; private messages are not page-cached.
Menu affixes, the admin redirect message, permission messages, profile option captions, date values, emoticon inserts and the logger popup are encoded for their context. Uploads, Snoopy redirects, template directory modes, the Protector allowlist write, installer and session cookies and the optional purify filters are tightened.
