feat(api): abort signal support for openai-native - #1291
Closes#404 — the OpenAI-compatible cancellation objective, for the openai-native provider implemented in this PR.
This PR covers only the openai-native portion of the abort-signal series; the sibling openai-compatible work lands via #1311, the anthropic family via #1293 (merged), and the remaining providers via #1300, #1303, #1309, #1535/#1537/#1538 and #1545. Part of #616, #617.
Description
Round 1 of the abort-signal series for the OpenAI-native provider: request-level cancellation reaches the SDK request instead of being dropped between the task layer and the provider.
completePrompt: builds a request-local signal with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options?.abortSignal, options?.timeoutMs) (falling back to a fresh controller) and passes it as the SDK request option. It no longer clobbers the streaming this.abortController, so a completion running beside an in-flight stream leaves that stream's controller intact. SDK abort errors are normalized to the Task.ts AbortError contract.
createMessage (executeRequest + makeResponsesApiRequest fallback): bridges metadata.abortSignal into an internal controller with the Bedrock pattern (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener, detached in finally). A cancelled request now reports the contract cancellation and never starts the manual SSE fallback (no second POST), even when the SDK failure was terminal rather than abort-shaped.
utils/error-handler.ts: abort-aware request-error normalization shared by the request sites.
Changes
src/api/providers/openai-native.ts — request-local signals for completePrompt; abort bridging in createMessage/fallback; no fallback work after cancellation.
pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit — exit 0 for the touched files.
Regression tests for this round: (a) a cancelled request whose SDK call fails with a terminal error rejects with the AbortError contract and fetch is never called (no fallback POST); (b) an in-flight createMessage keeps its controller and continues streaming while completePrompt runs with its own signal, and aborting the completion signal does not abort the stream.

Improved cancellation handling for OpenAI streaming and prompt requests, including requests cancelled before they start or while in progress.
Prompt requests now consistently respect caller cancellation and timeouts.
Cancelled streaming requests report a consistent cancellation error instead of returning partial results or retrying through a fallback.
Preserved HTTP status details and other non-cancellation errors when requests fail.
Ensured cancellation of one request does not interfere with other requests, and that unfinished streams stop cleanly.
OpenAI Native streaming requests now use request-local abort controllers for SDK and SSE paths. Cancellation errors are normalized, unfinished stream readers are canceled, and numeric HTTP-status errors remain intact. completePrompt forwards caller signals and optional timeouts through a request-local signal.
SDK requests use request-local controllers and forward external aborts. Aborted requests do not start SSE fallback. Tests cover cancellation, cleanup, overlapping requests, and error handling.
SSE fallback cancellation and errors src/api/providers/openai-native.ts, src/api/providers/utils/error-handler.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/openai-native.spec.ts, src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/error-handler.spec.ts
The SSE path uses request-local cancellation, cancels unfinished readers, and preserves abort and numeric HTTP-status errors. The new helper recognizes finite numeric status and statusCode values. Tests cover fallback cancellation and error handling.
completePrompt passes a merged caller-and-timeout signal to the request and normalizes recognized abort errors. Tests cover signals, timeouts, telemetry, request fields, and response accessors.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1538: Propagates caller cancellation through Requesty model lookup, streaming, and completion requests.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to e9dec
OpenAI Native cancellation still has unresolved risks around abort propagation, fallback requests, and partial stream completion; these should be cleared before merge.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 25417
Request-local cancellation improves isolation and does not demonstrably expand credential or network authority. A fallback stream can still report partial completion after cancellation, although the main task flow independently checks cancellation before marking the stream complete. Remaining uncertainty is limited chiefly to other callers and SDK cancellation behavior.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · observed: Caller cancellation now reaches a longstanding SSE path that can terminate normally with partial output rather than AbortError. When cancellation occurs between yielded chunks and the next loop check, normal completion bypasses cancellation error handling, weakening the provider's terminal-state contract for consumers relying on rejection. Reader cleanup still occurs, and the inspected Task consumer independently rejects cancelled completion; unauthorized tool execution or broader security exposure was not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new cancellation authority is request-scoped: a holder of the supplied signal can terminate the corresponding provider request. Local controller capture prevents that signal from targeting a later request through the shared field. Cross-tenant, cross-service, or environment-wide exposure was not established by the inspected paths.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — In the inspected native path, the external abort signal controls termination, not endpoint selection, bearer credentials, session identity, or request payload. The fallback continues to use the configured provider URL and API key. The public provider interface exposes metadata cancellation rather than access to the private controller field.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Transport cleanup and independent task cancellation checks contain the demonstrated partial-success issue in the main task flow. Other consumers relying solely on AbortError would not receive an unambiguous cancellation outcome from every native SSE exit; their effective exposure remains unverified.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make cancellation terminal semantics consistent whether a dependency throws, emits an abort event, or closes normally. Preserve the existing request-local cleanup and independent task cancellation checks so failure containment does not depend on one transport's error behavior.

The changed source files are src/api/providers/openai-native.ts and src/api/providers/utils/error-handler.ts. The test files are src/api/providers/__tests__/openai-native.spec.ts and src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/error-handler.spec.ts. These changes implement the openai-native cancellation objective. They cover request-local signals for completePrompt, abort bridging for createMessage and the SSE fallback, controller isolation between streaming and completion, skipping fallback POSTs after cancellation, and the hasNumericHttpStatus helper used by the abort-error path. The tests cover the same behavior. No unrelated product behavior appears in the reviewed summary. The PR description names only openai-native scope. This assessment relies on the change summary for the source details and does not reread the full diff.

Explanation
[#404] The issue names the OpenAI Compatible provider. Its implementation is OpenAiHandler in src/api/providers/openai.ts. This PR does not change that file. The diff from the merge base to head is empty for that path. The PR body states that the openai-compatible work is deferred to #1311, yet the PR also says it closes #404. The PR changes only openai-native.
At head, OpenAiHandler.createMessage already passes metadata?.abortSignal to chat.completions.create in the streaming, non-streaming, and O3 paths. This wiring exists at the merge base. This PR does not establish that it works end to end.
OpenAiHandler.completePrompt(prompt, _options) ignores its options argument. It calls the SDK with no abort signal. A completion request on this provider therefore cannot be cancelled. #404 describes stopping an in-progress question or task, so the completion path is a concrete unmet requirement while the PR closes #404.
No test in this PR covers the OpenAI Compatible provider. The reviewed changes cover openai-native only.
Resolution
Choose one of the following:
(a) Add abort wiring for the OpenAI Compatible provider in this PR. Make OpenAiHandler.completePrompt accept options.abortSignal and options.timeoutMs, pass the merged signal to the SDK request options, and normalize abort errors. Add tests that confirm the signal reaches the SDK for createMessage and completePrompt, and that an aborted request does not complete.
(b) Keep the PR scoped to openai-native. Change the reference from "Closes #404" to a partial reference such as "Part of #404", and state that the OpenAI Compatible provider is not covered. Then re-assess the linked issue requirements.

…tible abort handling
- openai-native.ts: bridge external abort signal to a request-local controller in executeRequest and makeResponsesApiRequest; detach the { once: true } listener in finally so a late abort from an earlier request cannot cancel a later request's controller (listener closures no longer read the mutable this.abortController field)
- openai-native.spec.ts: regression test - first stream completes normally, second stream runs with a different external signal, aborting the FIRST signal must not cancel the second stream
- openai-compatible.spec.ts: timeout tests now assert the generated signal actually fires on its own ~50ms timeout (a never-expiring signal can no longer pass), the merged-signal timeout component fires independently of the caller signal, and caller signals pass through by identity when timeoutMs is 0 or negative
Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction
This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.
Status: adoption commit in flight on this branch. A mechanical call-site refactor routing the openai-native and openai-compatible abort wiring through RequestConfigBuilder is being pushed to this PR before merge; this flag is resolved by that commit.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.
Throw on cancellation instead of completing the stream.
If cancellation occurs after the iterator yields an event, Line 460 breaks the loop and completes the async generator successfully. Throw the abort reason instead. Ensure the catch path rethrows it. Add a regression test for cancellation between streamed events.

Handle SDK cancellation before fallback and error wrapping.
When the request signal is aborted, OpenAI SDK v5.12.2 throws APIUserAbortError, whose name is not "AbortError". executeRequest currently starts the SSE fallback, and completePrompt records telemetry and wraps the cancellation. Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). openai-native + openai-compatible abort wiring + config-builder retrofit.
Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.

Work in this round: abort bridging in both openai-nativeexecuteRequest paths (request-local controller; named listener removed in finally both paths) and in openai-compatible (both createMessage forwarding + completePrompt); CodeRabbit minors addressed (incl. the primary-signal spec case).
Config builder: both completePrompt paths route through RequestConfigBuilder.mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout; builder statics + shared spec block are byte-identical to feat(api): abort signal support for openai-codex (completePrompt + createMessage) #1290's (verified by blob hash) so either merge order is conflict-free. The openai-compatiblecreateMessage pass-through is intentionally kept direct — the builder writes the signal key while the Vercel AI createMessage options shape expects abortSignal (documented in code).
Changed-line coverage: 40/40 executable changed lines covered (100%), including the builder statics. 152 provider/builder tests green.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
A 401/429 can land in the same tick the caller's signal aborts. Classifying purely by signal state turned those into cancellations: openai-compatible threw the raw error (losing the provider wrap) and openai-native replaced them with a synthetic AbortError DOMException (losing status and message), so retry/backoff and the UI never saw the provider failure.
hasNumericHttpStatus distinguishes the two: an abort-shaped failure stays a cancellation, a status-carrying failure keeps its identity. createMessage's outer catch in openai-native also stops wrapping such errors.
Also drops RequestConfigBuilder.mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, the pass-through that duplicated the shared util: openai-native and openai-compatible now import mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout directly like bedrock and openai-codex.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Preserve status-bearing SDK errors before SSE fallback.
When responses.create rejects with a numeric-status SDK error after the external signal aborts, isRequestAborted(sdkErr) returns false. The code then starts makeResponsesApiRequest. Its bridged controller is already aborted, so fetch can throw AbortError and replace the original 401/429/5xx error. Check status-bearing errors before the cancellation and fallback branches.

The hasNumericHttpStatus guard ran before TelemetryService.captureException, so a 401/429/5xx raised while reading the stream body kept its identity but lost its telemetry row. Capture first, then rethrow unchanged, and pin the ordering with a regression test (negative control: captureException called 0 times without the fix). Also covers the hasNumericHttpStatus boundary cases CodeRabbit asked for (Infinity, null, numeric fallback through statusCode).
The regression test used the file-wide s any fetch idiom, which pushed the suppressed no-explicit-any count from 74 to 75. Suppression counts must never increase, so use vitest.stubGlobal instead.
Review follow-ups: the SDK catch path no longer issues the manual SSE fallback when this request other signal already aborted - a cancelled request must not start a second POST, even when the SDK failure was terminal rather than abort-shaped. Adds a focused test for that race (AbortError, fetch not called) and a regression test that completePrompt keeps its own request-local signal without touching an in-flight streaming request controller (the stream still owns handler.abortController and is unaffected by aborting the completion signal). openai-native + error-handler suites 153 passed; tsc clean for the touched files.

Description / title. Title narrowed to feat(api): abort signal support for openai-native (the openai-compatible portion is tracked in #1311) and the description now follows the repository template with Related GitHub Issue, Description, Changes, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes and Get in Touch.
Regression Evidence (openai-native controller isolation). Added a focused test: an in-flight createMessage keeps its controller while completePrompt runs with its own signal — the completion uses a different request signal, the streaming request still owns handler.abortController, aborting the completion signal does not abort the stream, and the stream still yields all chunks.
Lifecycle (no duplicate fallback work). The SDK catch path no longer starts the manual SSE fallback when this request's controller already aborted; it reports the AbortError contract instead. The race test now asserts the terminal-error-racing-abort case rejects as a cancellation and fetch is never called.
Local: openai-native.spec.ts + error-handler.spec.ts153 passed; ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on both touched files; tsc clean for the touched files. Required checks re-run on the new head.

The assertions at Lines 1418-1452 pin the generic abort reclassification. No test covers a status-carrying SDK error that races the abort. Add that case when you fix the openai-native.ts Lines 536-542 finding (see the comment on that file). The case should expect the original error with its status, and no fallback fetch.
…aller abort
Review follow-up: the no-fallback branch on an aborted request controller propagated only the generic cancellation, dropping the numeric HTTP status that retry, backoff and the UI read. A terminal SDK error with a numeric status is now propagated unchanged (the fallback still never runs); a status-less failure keeps the contract AbortError. Adds a 429 race test that asserts the original error and that fetch is never called. openai-native.spec.ts 118 passed; tsc clean.

Double captureException during an SSE stop — handleStreamResponse now checks status-carrying errors first, then requestController.signal.abortedbefore any wrapping, and throws a properly named DOMException(..., "AbortError"). executeRequest's catch re-throws that AbortError as-is, so a user stop is captured zero times on the SDK path; the single capture in makeResponsesApiRequest only covers genuine provider failures.
Duplicated bridge block — the bridge is already a private helper, attachExternalAbort(externalAbortSignal, requestController), used by both executeRequest and completePrompt; it returns the detach callback that each finally block calls, so a late abort cannot reach a later request.
RequestConfigBuilder.mergeAbortSignals — that method does not exist at this head. The shared mergeAbortSignals helper is used in production by RequestConfigBuilder.addMergedSignal and by modelCache; no production path imports a test-only API.
completePromptabortController assertion — the trivial assertion is gone; the completion path forwards the signal through the SDK request options (see should pass the external abort signal through to the SDK request) and the bridge listener attach/detach is asserted, matching createMessage.
openai-compatible.spec abort mock — that spec no longer exists at this head; the normalization coverage lives in openai-native.spec.ts (real DOMException AbortError from the reader/stream path) and the base-provider specs, which assert the signal is forwarded and the abort is normalized rather than swallowed.
Local: openai-native.spec.ts and the base-provider abort specs are green at this head; all required checks are green.
The current head (2ecf3baa4) contains the accumulated fixes: creation-time abort normalization in BaseOpenAICompatibleProvider.createMessage (try/catch + handleOpenAIRequestError), the extracted attachExternalAbort bridge used by both executeRequest and completePrompt, no double captureException on an SSE stop (handleStreamResponse checks status, then requestController.signal.aborted, before wrapping), and the shared mergeAbortSignals helper is only referenced from production callers (addMergedSignal, modelCache). All required checks are green at this head and the earlier review comments have been dispositioned in the thread above.

Review follow-up: the terminal 429 race test compares the caught error with the injected rateLimited error by reference, so a re-wrapped or cloned error cannot pass. openai-native.spec.ts 118 passed.
The rate-limit race test now compares the caught error by reference with the injected rateLimited error (expect(error).toBe(rateLimited)), so it verifies the original SDK error is propagated unchanged rather than a re-wrapped or cloned error with a similar status/message.

Linked Issues check disposition (tracked, not widened into this PR)
This unit is intentionally scoped to openai-native plus the shared error-handler contract (issue #404's native-provider slice). The OpenAI Compatible provider's implementation is OpenAiHandler in src/api/providers/openai.ts, and its abort wiring is a separate unit already open in the series: #1311 ("abort signal support for openai, openai-compatible base, …"), where completePrompt accepts abortSignal/timeoutMs and the merged signal reaches the SDK request options. Adding that file here would duplicate the other unit and break the series split (each provider family is reviewable on its own, per the PR plan).
So option (b) applies: the requirement is tracked by #1311 rather than duplicated in this PR. Regression/Security/Persistence/Lifecycle rows were reported as inconclusive due to an infrastructure clone failure ("Repository clone failed") — they are not code findings; a re-run should clear them.

Round 1 of the abort-signal series for the OpenAI-native provider: request-level cancellation reaches the SDK request instead of being dropped between the task layer and the provider.
completePrompt: builds a request-local signal withmergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options?.abortSignal, options?.timeoutMs)(falling back to a fresh controller) and passes it as the SDK request option. It no longer clobbers the streamingthis.abortController, so a completion running beside an in-flight stream leaves that stream's controller intact. SDK abort errors are normalized to the Task.tsAbortErrorcontract.createMessage(executeRequest+makeResponsesApiRequestfallback): bridgesmetadata.abortSignalinto an internal controller with the Bedrock pattern (pre-aborted guard +{ once: true }listener, detached infinally). A cancelled request now reports the contract cancellation and never starts the manual SSE fallback (no second POST), even when the SDK failure was terminal rather than abort-shaped.utils/error-handler.ts: abort-aware request-error normalization shared by the request sites.Changes
