feat(api): abort signal support for vscode-lm (completePrompt + createMessage) - #1300
Adds abort-signal support to the VS Code Language Model provider (vscode-lm): both completePrompt (via CompletePromptOptions) and createMessage (via metadata.abortSignal) now honor external abort signals and timeouts, and aborted requests are reported with name = "AbortError".
Host API limitation (signal vs. timeout capability)
VS Code's LanguageModelChat API cannot carry a raw AbortSignal. Evidence from the installed @types/vscode@1.100.0: LanguageModelChatRequestOptions contains only justification, modelOptions, tools, and toolMode, and the sole cancellation channel for LanguageModelChat.sendRequest(messages, options?, token?) is its token?: CancellationToken parameter. So instead of passing the signal through, this change bridges the external AbortSignal into a request-local vscode.CancellationTokenSource:
Pre-aborted signals cancel the token immediately; createMessage additionally fails fast with an AbortError before starting the host request.
Otherwise a one-shot abort listener ({ once: true }, stored in a named const and explicitly removed in finally) relays the abort to the token.
timeoutMs is applied through a setTimeout that cancels the token, and only when timeoutMs > 0 — zero/negative values disable the timeout instead of cancelling at once (lesson: never hand a 0 to a timeout option that treats it as "immediate").
Provider / paths touched
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts
completePrompt(prompt, options?): bridges options.abortSignal and options.timeoutMs into the request-local cancellation token (the previous code passed a throwaway token and ignored the options). Aborted requests (external signal, timeout, or host cancellation) reject with name = "AbortError" on the error path, and a success-path guard rejects with AbortError if the signal aborted after resolution. Listener and token source are cleaned up in finally.
createMessage(systemPrompt, messages, metadata?): bridges metadata?.abortSignal into the existing internal currentRequestCancellation source (Bedrock pattern; the existing mechanism is preserved, not replaced). A pre-aborted signal rejects immediately with AbortError. Host CancellationErrors are surfaced with name = "AbortError" (existing message preserved). The bridge listener is detached and the token source disposed in finally, which also stops the source from lingering on the instance after a successful request.
Tests added
src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
completePrompt: pre-aborted signal rejects with AbortError (token cancelled + disposed); mid-flight abort rejects with AbortError; timeoutMs elapse cancels the token; backward compatibility without options; signal + timeout together; non-abort errors keep the existing wrap (name stays Error); listener attach/detach assertions.
createMessage: pre-aborted metadata.abortSignal rejects with AbortError without starting a host request; mid-flight abort is bridged to the request cancellation token; the bridge listener is attached with { once: true } and detached after the request completes.
Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.
Updated this round (2026-10-13)
Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict in vscode-lm.ts: main added a post-stream salvage flush (yield* flushSalvage()) at the same position where this branch added the quiet-stream-end abort guard. Kept both, guard first — an aborted/superseded request must not emit further content (the per-request salvage state is moot once the request rejects), and a normal stream end still flushes exactly as main intends. Also adapted main's "discards buffered text and calls when the stream is cancelled" test to assert the branded message only: this series normalizes host cancellation to a canonical AbortError (same message, name = "AbortError"), which an Error-instance comparison would reject on the name; the branch's own cancellation tests already assert by message.
Verification at this head: 339/339 green in vscode-lm.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Both methods now build abort errors through the shared createAbortError("VS Code LM"); the canonical abort message is The VS Code LM request was aborted (was Zoo Code <Language Model API>: Request aborted / VSCode LM completion aborted). The host-cancellation variant keeps Zoo Code <Language Model API>: Request cancelled by user.
All 18 Stryker directives removed. The 16 StringLiteral pairs disappeared with the hand-built copies. The 2 remaining LogicalOperator pairs (if (externalAbortSignal && onExternalAbort) / if (externalAbortSignal && onAbort) in the finally blocks) are equivalent: the listener is only assigned inside if (externalAbortSignal), so the pair is always set-together or unset-together and && / || agree on every reachable state.
completePrompt's timeoutMs guard rejects non-finite values (Infinity now means 'no timeout') and caps finite delays at 2^31-1 ms: Node coerces larger delays to 1ms, which previously let an overflowing timeout cancel the request almost immediately with an AbortError. Regression tests pin both cases; the same pattern in the Ollama native provider is fixed in #1299.
Fractional-timeout rounding wave
Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).
Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)
The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).
Follow-up CR thread: the completePrompt raw setTimeout guard now applies Math.ceil before the 2^31-1 cap - Node truncates fractional delays (1500.5 fired at 1500 ms), which was inconsistent with the helper's round-up semantics. Test pins the delay handed to setTimeout (1501 for 1500.5); negative control fails exactly that test.
Updated 2026-10-22 (head 97d7f9251)
Merged current upstream/main (05d01f33d), clearing has-conflicts.
Local proof on the refreshed head: ESLint clean on the changed files, tsc --noEmit clean, vitest run over vscode-lm, github-copilot, abort-signal specs → 475/475 pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved cancellation handling when creating AI messages and completing prompts.
Requests canceled before they start now stop immediately; cancellations during setup or streaming return a consistent error.
Overlapping requests are handled more reliably, with resources cleaned up after completion, cancellation, or setup failures.
Non-positive and non-finite timeouts no longer trigger timers. Fractional timeouts are rounded up, and very long timeouts are capped.
Context-window limits now handle zero-sized windows and requests that exactly fit the available budget correctly.
The VS Code LM provider now uses request-local cancellation sources in createMessage and completePrompt. Both methods check cancellation during request processing, map cancellation to AbortError, and clean up request resources. Tests cover context-budget boundaries, request cancellation, and timeout handling.

Summary
createMessage setup and context checks src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/github-copilot.spec.ts
createMessage sets up cancellation before initialization and checks cancellation before host invocation. Context trimming and budget checks run inside the guarded request flow. Tests cover context boundaries and cancellation during setup.
createMessage stream handling and cleanup src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
createMessage checks cancellation during and after streaming, maps cancellation failures to AbortError, and cleans up request resources. Tests cover supersession, stream failures, malformed chunks, and cancellation before output or usage is emitted.
completePrompt abort and timeout lifecycle src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/github-copilot.spec.ts, src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/abort-signal.spec.ts
completePrompt connects external abort signals and usable timeouts to a request-local cancellation source. It checks cancellation around initialization and streaming, maps cancellation failures to AbortError, and cleans up timers, listeners, and sources. Tests cover timeout boundaries and cleanup. The timeout documentation describes fractional and oversized delays; the utility test was moved without changing its assertions.
A request that was already aborted can interrupt another active model response. Fix that ordering before merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 2c661
Request isolation and cleanup improve without a demonstrated increase in access or privileges. Some late cancellations may still appear successful, and coverage of callers and host behavior is incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Evidenced cancellation scope is a request or overlapping requests on the same handler. Task constructs its own handler, while singleCompletionHandler constructs a fresh handler per invocation. These inspected paths do not establish cross-task or cross-tenant cancellation reachability; alternate instance-sharing paths remain unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The cancellation bridge affects a host token, not tool selection or execution authority. createMessage retains the host request justification and caller-supplied tool definitions while adding cancellation checks before host invocation and before yielding host stream chunks.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — createMessage removes its abort listener and cancels and disposes its local source in finally, including consumer closure. It clears shared ownership only when the shared field still identifies that request, preventing an older request's cleanup from clearing a replacement request. completePrompt clears its timer, removes its listener, and disposes its source.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Extend request identity and cancellation enforcement through output accounting: pass the owning request token explicitly to counting and recheck cancellation after the awaited count before emitting terminal usage. This would strengthen the end-to-end cancellation contract without implying a verified authorization vulnerability.

Explanation
The description provides detailed implementation context, linked issue references, test coverage, verification results, and reviewer notes. It does not use the template headings exactly, and it omits the completed pre-submission checklist and explicit Closes issue line.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security-boundary failure condition. The production diff adds abort-signal bridging, timeout validation, cancellation checks, and cleanup in src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts; it does not add secret or PII logging, input execution, or approval bypasses. Tool-call recovery remains restricted to tools supplied in metadata.tools, and timeout values pass through finite-positive validation and rounding/capping in src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The production diff changes only in-memory VS Code cancellation sources, abort listeners, timers, and request streaming in src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, plus timeout normalization in src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. It adds no file, database, storage, or persisted-default write or consumer path. Therefore the check's failure conditions are not introduced.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The changed completePrompt abort-normalization catch path lacks focused coverage. completePrompt now maps an initialization rejection from getClient() to AbortError when its token or external signal is already cancelled (src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:1699, 1727-1735). The new initialization tests at src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts:4446-4516 gate selectChatModels, cancel, then resolve the gate successfully; they do not reject client initialization. The existing completion error test rejects sendRequest, not getClient(). Therefore the affected negative branch remains untested.
Resolution
Add a focused completePrompt test that gates selectChatModels, cancels an active signal or timeout, then rejects model initialization. Assert AbortError with message The VS Code LM request was aborted, zero sendRequest calls, and cleanup of the abort listener, timer, and cancellation-token source. Add coverage for both external abort and timeout if both paths share this contract.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle defect remains. completePrompt adds abort and disposal cancellation, but its stream loop at src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:1715-1719 does not check isAborted() before processing each chunk. dispose() cancels active completion tokens, and an external abort or timeout does the same. If the host stream ignores the cancellation token and continues yielding chunks, completePrompt keeps appending stale output until stream end. The guard at lines 1721-1724 runs only after that work completes. The tests also use a token-agnostic stream, confirming that token cancellation does not itself stop iteration.
Resolution
Add an isAborted() check at the start of each completePrompt stream iteration. Throw createAbortError(this.providerName) before inspecting or appending a chunk when cancellation or disposal occurred. Keep the existing finally cleanup and active-token tracking.

Reject a pre-aborted request before shared-state cleanup.
Line 377 calls ensureCleanState() before the pre-abort check. A pre-aborted createMessage() call cancels and disposes an active request even though it does not start a replacement request.
Move the pre-abort check before ensureCleanState(). Add a regression test with an active stream and a second pre-aborted call.
Proposed fix
- // Ensure clean state before starting a new request- this.ensureCleanState()-
// The VS Code LanguageModelChat API cannot carry an AbortSignal, so a
// pre-aborted external signal is reported immediately instead of being
// sent to the host.
const externalAbortSignal = metadata?.abortSignal
if (externalAbortSignal?.aborted) {
const abortError = new Error("Zoo Code <Language Model API>: Request aborted")
abortError.name = "AbortError"
throw abortError
}
++ // Ensure clean state only when a replacement request will start.+ this.ensureCleanState()
As per coding guidelines, add the regression test at the lowest layer that would have failed and run the narrowest relevant Vitest suite.

If the external signal aborts while calculateTotalInputTokens() is pending, Line 440 can complete and Line 448 still calls sendRequest(). internalCountTokens() converts cancellation into 0, so this path is reachable.
Recheck externalAbortSignal?.aborted after token counting and before sendRequest(). Add a unit regression that gates countTokens(), aborts, releases the gate, and asserts sendRequest() is not called.
As per coding guidelines, prefer the narrowest test layer that proves behavior; add a focused unit regression.

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction
This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.
Status: evaluated - not applicable. The vscode-lm cancellation bridge targets the VS Code CancellationTokenSource rather than SDK request options, which RequestConfigBuilder does not model; this PR's wiring is kept as-is and is out of scope for the builder adoption.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.
Round 1 — final status: all checks green, changed-line coverage verified
Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). vscode-lm cancellation bridging.
Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.
Final head:874115453 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
Work in this round: full cancellation matrix bridged to the VS Code CancellationTokenSource API — pre-abort, mid-flight abort, the init window (abort during initialize), premature generator closure (cancel-before-dispose), timeout during init, and CancellationError normalization to a standard AbortError.
Config builder: evaluated not applicable — this handler bridges to the VS Code CancellationTokenSource API rather than AbortSignal/fetch, so RequestConfigBuilder does not model its target.

Current step: Address maintainer or CODEOWNER feedback, push an update, then re-request review from the blocking maintainer.
Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
Semantic merge of the vscode-lm abort-contract unit onto main's Copilot/context-window
rewrite: keep the unit's cancellation contract (token+bridge before
getClient, pre-abort fast-fail, post-getClient and post-count re-checks,
createAbortError normalization, listener/timer cleanup, ceil+cap timeout)
while adopting main's structure and features (deferred client init,
assertRequestSupported, condense-window trimming, supportsImageInput,
assertWithinContextWindow, getCompletionRequestOptions hook, and the
provider-wide request-timeout default via BaseProvider.timeoutMs).
…contract
The merge brought in main's GitHubCopilotHandler cancellation tests, which
were written against main's vscode-lm internals. Two reconciliations:
- createMessage now also records the caller's abort in an abortedByCaller
flag set synchronously by the bridge listener, and the post-getClient /
post-count re-checks consult it in addition to the token flag. The token
flag alone cannot be the sole signal: cleanup cancels the token too, and
a host token's flag is not observable before its cancel settles (main's
own implementation used the same flag for this reason).
- github-copilot.spec.ts: cancellation assertions now expect this unit's
canonical abort error (createAbortError -> "The VS Code LM request was
aborted", name AbortError) instead of main's interim strings, and the
mid-stream completePrompt test asserts the contract that content racing
a cancellation is not surfaced (rejects instead of resolving with late
text), matching the pinned vscode-lm behavior.
Full api suite green (3220 passed / 2 skipped); tsc, eslint, prettier clean.

createMessage already asserts sendRequest received the bridged token; completePrompt only checked that the token source was disposed, so a fresh token passed to sendRequest would have gone unnoticed.

…rtion
The initialization-abort test only counted removeEventListener calls. Spy on addEventListener too and assert the removed listener is the exact callback the bridge registered, so a wrong-listener cleanup cannot pass.
Review follow-ups: completePrompt token sources are tracked on the handler and cancelled in dispose() (removed from the set in finally), so tearing the handler down stops completion requests as well as streaming ones. completePrompt also adopts the shared hasUsableTimeout/toSdkTimeoutMs helpers instead of inlining ceil/cap. Adds two focused tests: an external abort landing while getClient() is pending rejects with the contract AbortError without a host request, and disposal during client initialization cancels the active completion token. vscode-lm.spec.ts 382 passed; tsc clean for the file.
Conflict cleared + both warnings addressed (394696a40, 71c04d75f)
has-conflicts was set at the current head — merged current upstream/main (5cc5a3795). Conflicts: abort-signal.ts (this branch kept inline finite/round/cap logic; main introduced the shared hasUsableTimeout/toSdkTimeoutMs helpers — same semantics, took the helpers) and vscode-lm.ts (this branch's createAbortError import vs main's new getVsCodeLmModelInfo import from the vscode-lm-capabilities extraction — both kept). Local at the merge: vscode-lm.spec.ts + abort-signal.spec.ts 424 passed, tsc clean.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup — completed requests outlived handler disposal.completePrompt now registers its CancellationTokenSource on the handler (activeCompletionTokens) and removes it in finally; dispose() cancels and disposes every still-active completion token in addition to the streaming currentRequestCancellation. Also replaced the inlined ceil/cap timeout math with hasUsableTimeout/toSdkTimeoutMs.
Regression Evidence — cancellation during getClient(). Two focused tests added: (a) an external signal that aborts while selectChatModels is gated rejects with AbortError / The VS Code LM request was aborted and sendRequest is never called; (b) disposing the handler while client initialization is pending cancels the active completion token and the pending completePrompt rejects with the same contract error. vscode-lm.spec.ts: 382 passed; ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean.
Required checks re-run on the new head; the PR is no longer conflicted.

…en count
Review follow-ups: internalCountTokens returns 0 on cancellation, so the generator re-checks the request cancellation before yielding the usage chunk instead of completing normally with a zero-output chunk. The boundary test now pins a window whose 0.8*3 character budget is an exact integer (2.4 is exact for a 128k-token window), so the equality case is representable and the >= mutant is detectable; a focused test aborts during the output count and asserts the contract AbortError. vscode-lm.spec.ts 382 passed (new count-abort test included).
Cancellation during the final output-token count — after internalCountTokens, the generator re-checks externalAbortSignal / the request token before yielding the usage chunk, so a cancellation that lands inside the count rejects with the contract AbortError instead of completing normally with outputTokens: 0. Added a focused test that aborts during the output count (the input count still succeeds) and asserts the AbortError.
Deterministic exact-budget boundary test — the test now pins a window whose 0.8 * 3 character budget is a whole number (128_000 tokens → 307_200 chars, restored in finally), so the request can land exactly on the raw budget and the >= mutant is detectable.
Local: vscode-lm.spec.ts382 passed (including the new count-abort test); tsc clean.
@easonLiangWorldedtech I inspected 2439042ae. Both changes match the reported fixes:
The post-count guard checks the external signal and request-local cancellation token before yielding usage.
The exact-budget test asserts a 307_200-character budget and restores maxInputTokens in finally.
I found no new issue in these changes. I did not run tests or TypeScript checks. I’ll trigger the requested review.

Learning: In `src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts`, `VsCodeLmHandler.ensureCleanState()` can cancel a prior `createMessage` request while `getClient()` is pending. The prior request's catch block must check its request-local cancellation token, not only its external `AbortSignal`, to normalize a subsequent client-initialization failure to `AbortError`.

…e method
The platform-unit coverage run reported 19 downstream failures: spying on the private internalCountTokens made the abort land differently under coverage instrumentation. The test now aborts from the host countTokens mock (the output count is the call carrying the streamed text) and restores the original implementation, so the suite passes with and without coverage (383 passed in both).
Human review follow-up: replace the remaining hand-built AbortError for a host CancellationError with createAbortError(this.providerName); update the two assertions that pinned the old branded message to the canonical text. vscode-lm.spec.ts 383 passed; tsc clean.
Human review items dispositioned at 26cfd61c7 + this commit
completePrompt token identity — the test now pins sendRequest.mock.calls[0][2] to the bridged tokenSource.token (should bridge the abort signal to a fresh cancellation token and dispose it), matching the createMessage assertion; a fresh token would fail.
Supersede during countTokens without an external signal — should reject with an AbortError when a newer request supersedes during input token counting: request A carries no abortSignal, request B supersedes it while A is parked in the host countTokens, and A rejects with the canonical abort without reaching sendRequest.
Post-abort guard vs flushSalvage ordering — should reject with the canonical abort instead of flushing pending salvage after a quiet post-abort stream end keeps a complete leaked tool-call block buffered (pending salvage) and ends the stream quietly after the abort; swapping the guard and the flush would surface the buffered call, so the test fails under that swap.
Hand-built abort error — the remaining hand-built AbortError for host CancellationError is replaced with the shared createAbortError(this.providerName); the two assertions that pinned the old branded message now pin the canonical The VS Code LM request was aborted.
Local: vscode-lm.spec.ts383 passed; tsc clean; required checks were green at the previous head and this commit only touches the abort-error construction and test expectations.
Review follow-ups: a createMessage test neutralises the bridged token cancel so only the external signal aborts (canonical AbortError); dispose tests cover a streaming completion, two concurrent completions, and a finished completion (which must not be cancelled again). vscode-lm.spec 387 passed; tsc clean.
Signal-only abort in createMessage — added a test with the bridged token cancel neutralised, so only externalAbortSignal.aborted is true; the stream ends quietly and the request rejects with the canonical AbortError. The existing token-only cases (supersession) stay, and together they pin both operands of the externalAbortSignal?.aborted || token.isCancellationRequested guards in createMessage.
Dispose coverage for completions — added three tests: (a) dispose() while a completion stream is running cancels and disposes its token, and the pending completion rejects with the canonical AbortError; (b) dispose() with two concurrent completions cancels/disposes both tokens (pins the activeCompletionTokens.clear()/loop); (c) dispose() after a finished completion does not cancel that completion's token again (pins the activeCompletionTokens.delete in the finally block).
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Lint follow-up: the quiet stream stubs must be generators, so they yield an empty iterable instead of only awaiting the gate. vscode-lm.spec 387 passed; eslint 0.

Purpose
Adds abort-signal support to the VS Code Language Model provider (
vscode-lm): bothcompletePrompt(viaCompletePromptOptions) andcreateMessage(viametadata.abortSignal) now honor external abort signals and timeouts, and aborted requests are reported withname = "AbortError".Host API limitation (signal vs. timeout capability)
VS Code's
LanguageModelChatAPI cannot carry a rawAbortSignal. Evidence from the installed@types/vscode@1.100.0:LanguageModelChatRequestOptionscontains onlyjustification, modelOptions, tools, andtoolMode, and the sole cancellation channel forLanguageModelChat.sendRequest(messages, options?, token?)is itstoken?: CancellationTokenparameter. So instead of passing the signal through, this change bridges the externalAbortSignalinto a request-localvscode.CancellationTokenSource:createMessageadditionally fails fast with anAbortErrorbefore starting the host request.abortlistener ({ once: true }, stored in a named const and explicitly removed infinally) relays the abort to the token.timeoutMsis applied through asetTimeoutthat cancels the token, and only whentimeoutMs > 0— zero/negative values disable the timeout instead of cancelling at once (lesson: never hand a0to a timeout option that treats it as "immediate").Provider / paths touched
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.tscompletePrompt(prompt, options?): bridgesoptions.abortSignalandoptions.timeoutMsinto the request-local cancellation token (the previous code passed a throwaway token and ignored the options). Aborted requests (external signal, timeout, or host cancellation) reject withname = "AbortError"on the error path, and a success-path guard rejects withAbortErrorif the signal aborted after resolution. Listener and token source are cleaned up infinally.createMessage(systemPrompt, messages, metadata?): bridgesmetadata?.abortSignalinto the existing internalcurrentRequestCancellationsource (Bedrock pattern; the existing mechanism is preserved, not replaced). A pre-aborted signal rejects immediately withAbortError. HostCancellationErrors are surfaced withname = "AbortError"(existing message preserved). The bridge listener is detached and the token source disposed infinally, which also stops the source from lingering on the instance after a successful request.Tests added

Updated this round (2026-10-13)
Merged current upstream
maininto the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict invscode-lm.ts: main added a post-stream salvage flush (yield* flushSalvage()) at the same position where this branch added the quiet-stream-end abort guard. Kept both, guard first — an aborted/superseded request must not emit further content (the per-request salvage state is moot once the request rejects), and a normal stream end still flushes exactly as main intends. Also adapted main's "discards buffered text and calls when the stream is cancelled" test to assert the branded message only: this series normalizes host cancellation to a canonicalAbortError(same message, name = "AbortError"), which an Error-instance comparison would reject on the name; the branch's own cancellation tests already assert by message.Verification at this head: 339/339 green in
vscode-lm.spec.ts;tsc --noEmit→ 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean;prettier --checkclean on touched files.Abort contract + directive notes (589b64b)
createAbortError("VS Code LM"); the canonical abort message isThe VS Code LM request was aborted(wasZoo Code <Language Model API>: Request aborted/VSCode LM completion aborted). The host-cancellation variant keepsZoo Code <Language Model API>: Request cancelled by user.LogicalOperatorpairs (if (externalAbortSignal && onExternalAbort)/if (externalAbortSignal && onAbort)in the finally blocks) are equivalent: the listener is only assigned insideif (externalAbortSignal), so the pair is always set-together or unset-together and && / || agree on every reachable state.Timeout guard hardening (7765274)
completePrompt's timeoutMs guard rejects non-finite values (Infinity now means 'no timeout') and caps finite delays at 2^31-1 ms: Node coerces larger delays to 1ms, which previously let an overflowing timeout cancel the request almost immediately with an AbortError.
Raw-guard fractional rounding (8101d01)
Follow-up CR thread: the completePrompt raw setTimeout guard now applies Math.ceil before the 2^31-1 cap - Node truncates fractional delays (1500.5 fired at 1500 ms), which was inconsistent with the helper's round-up semantics. Test pins the delay handed to setTimeout (1501 for 1500.5); negative control fails exactly that test.
