fix(task): guard saveClineMessages against abandoned tasks (fixes #1021) - #1496

Conversation
…-Code-Org#1021) Fire-and-forget saveClineMessages() calls could execute updateTaskHistory() after abandonSubtask's atomicUpdatePair() had already cleared parentTaskId/rootTaskId, silently reattaching the severed parent-child link. Check this.abandoned before updateTaskHistory() to catch both the explicit abort save and any in-flight fire-and-forget saves. Per-task message persistence is unaffected: saveTaskMessages still runs, only the (stale) history-item update is skipped. This is the minimal upstream-main form of the fix developed on the local-usage-stats branch (commit 1d1eb91); that commit's surrounding usage-stats changes are not part of main and are excluded. Regression test in Task.spec.ts: an abandoned task's saveClineMessages() persists messages but never calls updateTaskHistory().
Per CodeRabbit review: document why the provider test double uses the as unknown as MockedClineProvider double assertion (Task receives a full ClineProvider at runtime; this focused unit test only exercises a few methods) — same pattern and rationale as the existing Subtask Rate Limiting block.
…ad review gate (no code change)
Per CodeRabbit review on PR Zoo-Code-Org#1382, the focused task-history tests used a provider double without taskHistoryStore, so provider?.taskHistoryStore.get() threw before the guard was evaluated and the catch returned false - the assertions passed without ever exercising updateTaskHistory. Stub taskHistoryStore.get() on the provider double (shared makeMockProvider helper) so execution reaches updateTaskHistory; add a non-abandoned control asserting updateTaskHistory() runs and the item is written as-is (covers the guard false branch); add an in-flight save test where saveTaskMessages() is deferred, the task is abandoned mid-save, and the guard must still skip the history update when the save resolves. All PR-changed lines in Task.ts (guard at 1138-1140) are now 100% covered on lines and branches: true branch hit twice (abandoned + in-flight), false branch once (control).
Branch base 78c712a predates Zoo-Code-Org#1433 (efc30cf, 2026-08-29), which added the CodeRabbit config to main. Without it, CodeRabbit reviews this head with defaults (request-changes workflow disabled) and can only submit COMMENTED reviews; it never submits the APPROVED review that the PR review gate requires. Sync the config (incl. Zoo-Code-Org#1490) so reviews on this head use the org adversarial review profile and the formal review workflow, letting the gate advance.

Guard history updates during abandoned task saves src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts |
When the task is abandoned, saveClineMessages returns true after the message write and skips updateTaskHistory. Tests cover abandonment before and during message persistence. Active tasks continue to update history. |

Merge Risk:
Low · previous review 737fd
-
The implementation is low risk to merge, but an end-to-end regression test should verify that abandoned subtask history remains detached.
Security Architecture Review
-
Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to
a1c71The guard protects abandoned task history in the tested cases, but it does not establish that a concurrent history write cannot restore a severed link. No expanded external access is shown.
Retained concerns
- Medium · architecture · inferred: The new abandonment check is not atomic with the subsequent history update. A save that passes the check may still write stale parent identifiers if link severance completes before that update is applied; the changed tests do not cover this ordering.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The evidenced effect of a stale save is on the child history item and its relationship to a delegated parent. The reviewed change does not establish a new external entrypoint or a cross-tenant path.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — A stale history update remains possible under an untested ordering after the guard. The available evidence does not show that this ordering grants an attacker authority or bypasses the provider's persisted-parent completion check.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The provider checks the delegated parent and interrupted child before severing their links; the save guard separately checks the live task's abandoned flag before requesting a history update.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The store holds an in-process lock for the paired update, but its two disk writes are not all-or-nothing; a second-write failure leaves the first committed. This is an existing recovery limitation, not a newly introduced security finding.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Enforce the abandoned-link rule when the history write is applied, coordinated with link severance, and exercise the ordering in which a save has passed its guard but its history update is still pending.

Explanation
Issue [
#1021] requires athis.abandonedcheck beforeupdateTaskHistory()for explicit abort saves and in-flight fire-and-forget saves. The change adds this guard insaveClineMessages(). The added tests cover abandoned, deferred in-flight, and active-task cases, and verify that message persistence remains active while history updates are skipped after abandonment.

Explanation
The reviewed summary identifies changes in
src/core/task/Task.tsandsrc/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts. The tests support [#1021]. The described Stryker directive removals are comment-only changes in the touched file and are linked to the repository touch-and-remove policy. No unrelated executable change is established.
Full details: Regression Evidence
-
Explanation
Focused coverage exists for the changed guard in
Task.ts. The tests cover an already abandoned task, abandonment whilesaveTaskMessagesis pending, and the non-abandoned control path. They assert message persistence, the success result, and thatupdateTaskHistoryis skipped or called as required. The change has no UI behavior, and unchanged save-error and metadata-error paths do not require new coverage.
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. The only production change is in
Task.saveClineMessages(): aftersaveTaskMessages()and metadata construction, it checks the internalthis.abandonedflag and skipsupdateTaskHistory()for abandoned tasks. It does not expose secrets or PII, execute unvalidated input, or bypass an approval or allowlist control. The added tests only use local mock data.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
No changed path meets the failure condition. In
Task.saveClineMessages, saveTaskMessages, taskMetadata, andupdateTaskHistoryremain awaited. The newthis.abandonedguard runs after the message write and skips only the stale task-history write, preventing reattachment afterabandonSubtaskclears the relationship. The added tests cover persisted messages, skipped history, the active control path, and an in-flight save.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
-
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only
Task.saveClineMessages(): aftersaveTaskMessages()and metadata calculation, an abandoned task returns success without callingupdateTaskHistory(). This removes stale history work after abandonment. It does not add listeners, watchers, timers, providers, or tasks, and it does not introduce duplicate lifecycle work. The added tests cover the abandoned and in-flight save paths plus the active control path.

Learning: In the TypeScript Task class in src/core/task/Task.ts, saveClineMessages() returns a boolean that reflects message persistence only, not metadata or task-history updates. After saveTaskMessages() succeeds, intentionally skipping updateTaskHistory() for an abandoned task must still return true. persistQueuedFeedbackAndAcknowledge() uses this result to acknowledge durable queued feedback, and finalizePartialToolAsk() uses it to permit a webview update after persistence.

1819-1825: LGTM!
The two abandoned-save tests set task.abandoned directly. Use the public abandonment transition (requestAbort(true)) so the tests exercise the same path the product takes, while the active-task control case stays untouched.

…andoned link Review follow-up: the abandoned path keeps the history upsert when the store already owns the row, refreshing metadata while omitting parentTaskId/rootTaskId so the severed link stays severed; a test pins the merged update. Task.spec abandoned-guard suite 4 passed.
Review thread addressedThe abandoned guard no longer skips the history upsert wholesale. When the store already has the task's row, the final save now refreshes the existing row (tokens, cost, ts, title, status preserved) while omitting Test added: an abandoned task with a pre-existing store row refreshes metadata (tokensIn/tokensOut/totalCost/status) and the update carries neither link key; the existing no-row tests keep pinning the skip path. Fire-and-forget
saveClineMessages()calls could runupdateTaskHistory()afterabandonSubtask()'satomicUpdatePair()had already clearedparentTaskId/rootTaskId, silently reattaching the severed parent-child link.How:
Task#saveClineMessages()now checksthis.abandonedafter the message write and, when the task was abandoned, skips the history-item update and reports the message write as successful. This covers the explicit abort save and any in-flight fire-and-forget saves (the two un-awaitedsaveClineMessages().catch(...)call sites).Trade-off: per-task message persistence is unaffected —
saveTaskMessages()still runs before the guard. Only the stale history-item update is skipped, which is exactly the value that would rebuildparentTaskId/rootTaskIdfrom the live task.Test Procedure
cd src && node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts— the suite covers the abandoned-save guard: the write still succeeds, the history update is skipped, and the guard is hit both for a save made after abandonment and for a save already in flight when the task is abandoned.cd src && node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run __tests__/abandonSubtask.spec.ts— the provider-side transitions that clear the persisted links.Task.ts(+14/−0) andTask.spec.ts(+179/−0).Pre-Submission Checklist
.coderabbit.yamlor Stryker-directive changes remain in the diff.Task.spec.tscover both the post-abandonment and in-flight save paths.Additional Notes
The cross-layer integration test (a deferred save crossing
ClineProvider.abandonSubtask()) is tracked as a follow-up: the unit guard and the provider-side link clearing are both covered, but the two layers are not yet exercised together in one test.
