Fixes #2069

Problem

ClineProvider.upsertProviderProfile (the path behind the webview's upsertApiConfiguration) saved and activated whatever profile it was given: no ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed check, and a failure after saveConfig (mode binding, context settings, task handler) left storage, currentApiConfigName, the mode binding, in-memory settings and the task handler out of sync. updateProfileModel already had both guards; this brings upsertProviderProfile in line.

Change

Inside the existing mutation queue:

  1. Reject with OrganizationAllowListViolationError before any write; the localized allow-list message is shown.
  2. Snapshot the previous stored profile (if any), listApiConfigMeta, currentApiConfigName, the current mode's binding and the in-memory provider settings.
  3. On any failure, restore all of them (deleting the profile if it did not exist before) and rebuild the task's API handler when the call was activating. If the restore itself fails, the existing "partial update" error is shown instead of the generic one.

Notes

  • Internal callers (Zoo Gateway refresh, OpenRouter/Requesty model refresh) go through the same path and now get the same validation.
  • The mode binding cannot be cleared through ProviderSettingsManager, so if the mode had no binding before a failed upsert, the new binding is left in place.

Tests

New: allow-list rejection touches no state; permitted profile accepted; activation failure restores the previous profile, mode binding and settings; failure deletes a profile that did not exist before. Updated: partial manager mocks gained hasConfig/getModeConfigId, and the "buildApiHandler error" test now asserts the rollback instead of the old "state was still updated". src suite (11,032 tests) and check-types pass.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Provider profiles are checked against organization access rules before changes are applied, with clearer messages when a profile is not allowed.
    • If profile activation or configuration fails, the previous profile and related settings are restored where possible. Newly created profiles are removed when activation fails.
    • Errors indicate when restoration is only partially successful.
  • Reliability
    • Improved failure handling helps preserve the active profile and its configuration.

Provider profile upserts now check organization allow-lists before writing. The code snapshots existing profile and settings state, then attempts to restore it if persistence or activation fails. Tests cover allow-list decisions and rollback behavior.

Explanation

The production changes implement the validation and rollback requirements for issue [#2069]. The added tests cover allow-list rejection, accepted profiles, rollback, and deletion of a newly created profile. The provider-settings-manager mock updates support those tests. No unrelated production change is shown in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. In the changed upsertProviderProfile path, ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed(providerSettings, organizationAllowList) runs before snapshotProviderProfileState or persistProviderProfile; disallowed webview profiles therefore do not reach saveConfig, activation, or context propagation. The validator checks the provider and provider-specific model identifier. The remaining changes restore prior state after persistence or activation failures and do not expose secrets or add an approval bypass.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path leaks a resource or duplicates work. The new rollback path rebuilds the current task API handler only when activation was requested. Task.updateApiConfiguration retires replaced handlers, and Task.dispose also disposes current and retired handlers. The mutation queue continues timed-out upserts intentionally and serializes the work, so the changed code does not create overlapping retries or duplicate listeners, watchers, timers, or tasks.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description identifies issue #2069, explains the problem and implementation, documents an important limitation, and provides test coverage and results. It does not use the full template headings or include the checklist, documentation impact, and contact sections, but the required change and validation details are substantially complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2069] requires rollback of every touched value, including the mode binding. restoreProviderProfileState calls setModeConfig only when snapshot.modeConfigId is present. When the previous mode had no binding, it does not clear the binding created by the failed upsert. The PR description confirms this remaining state mismatch. The allow-list gate and other rollback steps are implemented, but this requirement remains unmet.

Resolution

Add a supported mode-binding clear or delete operation. Call it when snapshot.modeConfigId is absent. Add a regression test for a failed upsert that starts with no mode binding.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The changed rollback path can leave a persisted mode binding after a failed upsert. restoreProviderProfileState skips mode restoration when snapshot.modeConfigId is undefined (ClineProvider.ts:1972-1974). However, persistProviderProfile writes modeApiConfigs[mode] = id through setModeConfig (ClineProvider.ts:2117-2122), and ProviderSettingsManager.setModeConfig creates or updates that map entry (ProviderSettingsManager.ts:546-557). If another activation write fails after setModeConfig succeeds, an initially unbound mode retains the failed profile ID. The restore reports no failure, so partialState remains false and the generic error is shown. A later mode switch can activate the failed profile. An empty modeApiConfigs is valid persisted/imported state, so this is a plausible triggering scenario. The added tests cover a prior binding and do not cover an initially unbound mode.

Resolution

Add a ProviderSettingsManager operation that removes a mode binding, or restore the complete mode-binding map. Invoke it when snapshot.modeConfigId is undefined. If removal or map restoration fails, set partialState and show the partial-update error. Add a regression test that starts with an unbound mode, makes activation fail after setModeConfig writes, and verifies that the mode remains unbound.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR adds a distinct upsertProviderProfile partial-rollback path at ClineProvider.ts:1909-1933: a restore failure sets partialState and shows errors.update_profile_model_partial. The new upsert tests cover successful rollback and allow-list rejection, but none makes an upsert restore operation fail or asserts the partial-state message. The existing matching test at apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts:731-740 covers updateProfileModel, which uses a different rollback path.

Resolution

Add a focused upsertProviderProfile test that causes activation to fail and causes a rollback operation to fail, such as making setModeConfig reject for both activation and restoration. Assert that the other rollback steps still run and that vscode.window.showErrorMessage receives errors.update_profile_model_partial.

Assert the exact previous active profile name.

The deletion rollback is already covered by ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts. The remaining assertion is weak: it accepts any value other than "test-config". Assert the exact previous active name, "current-config".

Remove a newly created mode binding during rollback.

When activate is true and the mode has no previous binding, persistProviderProfile starts setModeConfig(mode, id) with the other activation writes. If another activation write rejects, Promise.allSettled throws after the mode write can succeed. restoreProviderProfileState skips mode restoration when snapshot.modeConfigId is unset. The rollback can then delete a newly created profile while leaving the mode bound to its deleted ID.

Add a manager operation that removes the mode key, and call it for an unset snapshot.

Review comment at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts around lines 1972 - 1978:
Update restoreProviderProfileState to clear the mode binding when
snapshot.modeConfigId is unset, instead of skipping the operation. Add a
clearModeConfig method to ProviderSettingsManager that removes the mode key
under the existing lock/load/store flow, and use it in the rollback
Promise.allSettled path while preserving setModeConfig for existing bindings.

upsertProviderProfile trusted whatever the webview posted and left state
partially updated on a mid-flow failure. Validate against the organization
allow-list before any write, snapshot the profile, mode binding, current
profile name, list metadata and in-memory settings, and restore them (and the
task's API handler) if saving or activating fails.
