Closes: #2084

Description

This PR adds the coding-task evaluation framework from issue #2084. It builds on the agent-evals substrate from PR #1909. The framework grades real Zoo runs, repeats them, and compares two commits in one self-contained report.

Frozen fixtures. The suite coding-basic-v1 ships five frozen coding fixtures: clamp-range, slugify-text, parse-csv-line, format-bytes, and deep-get. Each fixture has one prompt, a known-good workspace, a tool policy, execution limits, hidden acceptance tests, and two reference solutions. One solution is correct. One is plausible but wrong. Each grader passes the correct solution and fails the incorrect one.

Isolation and digests. Each fixture has an immutable initial-state digest. Each run builds its workspace from that state in a fresh directory. Runs cannot inherit changes from other runs. The suite digest pins the fixture content, hidden tests, reference solutions, and grader version. Any edit changes the digest and marks a cross-commit comparison incompatible.

Container grading. After the agent stops, the grader copies the final workspace to a fresh directory and adds the hidden tests. It runs them in a disposable container with CPU, memory, and time limits. The runtime detects Docker or Podman. The grader has no provider credential and no network access. A grader that hangs, crashes, or exceeds its limits reports grading failure. It never reports incorrect.

Outcomes. Each run reports one of five outcomes: correct, incorrect, timed out, grading failure, or infrastructure failure. Infrastructure failures stay separate from incorrect results.

Paired comparisons. pnpm coding-evals:compare runs the same fixtures on a baseline commit and a candidate commit with pinned inputs. The default is three repetitions per fixture per commit. Pinned inputs cover the commit SHAs, the suite digest, the settings digest, the model identifier, the grader version, and the runner environment. A pinned difference marks the pair as incompatible in the report. pnpm coding-evals:side runs one side.

Metrics and reports. Per-run metrics cover input, output, and cached tokens, tool calls, tool failures, duration, stop reason, outcome, and estimated cost where the price table allows it. Missing values stay missing. Unsupported telemetry is reported as unavailable. The framework writes a JSON report and a self-contained Markdown report with paired differences and uncertainty. It makes no statistical significance claim.

Test Procedure

  • Run pnpm test:agent-evals:unit. All 128 tests pass offline. The suite uses node:test and needs no VS Code, no provider credential, and no container runtime.
  • Run pnpm agent-evals:check-types. The check passes with no errors.
  • Grader unit tests cover the correct and incorrect reference solutions, grader timeouts, and grader crashes.

Not run: the live acceptance check on a deliberately broken commit. This check remains unrun. It needs VS Code, provider credentials, and Docker or Podman. Reviewers with that setup can run pnpm coding-evals:compare against a broken candidate commit to complete it.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the linked issue, implementation summary, test procedure, checklist, documentation notes, and additional context. It clearly states the unrun live acceptance check and its requirements. The unchecked self-review and contribution-guidelines items are minor checklist omissions, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support issue #2084 and its security rules.

  • Fixtures, digests, fresh workspaces, hidden-test grading, container grading, outcomes, metrics, pricing, pins, statistics, reports, and their tests implement the requested framework.
  • Trust policy, commit approval, clean-tree checks, allowlisted side environments, and worktree preparation enforce the issue rule that only trusted code runs with the provider credential.
  • Side-process guard, interrupt flag, and bounded preparation protect process cleanup and the isolated run boundary.
  • The runner.ts stop-observer drain change and its test updates (runner.test.ts, solheim-smoke/run.test.ts) let coding runs capture final usage. They extend the #1909 substrate and do not change its core runtime.
  • launcher.ts changes (vscodeCachePath, final workspace capture) support fixture isolation and workspace capture.
  • README and package script changes document and expose the commands.

No release workflow changes, model-based judging, hard release gates, or arbitrary repository cloning appear in the summary. Items marked as follow-up in the PR comments (#2197) are not implemented as in-scope work in this PR.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No concrete security-boundary failure remains in the changed path. coding-side.mts creates a detached worktree from the approved commit, verifies its SHA and cleanliness, installs and builds there, and passes that worktree to createHostRuntime; caller-tree ignored artifacts are not loaded. The integration test plants ignored src/dist and node_modules artifacts and verifies that they do not execute, while the fresh worktree is cleaned up. Credential names remain restricted to SOLHEIM_API_KEY, and preparation environments omit the provider credential. Prior failure addressed: coding-side.mts now launches only evaluatedWorktree, created with git worktree add --detach from the approved SHA. The added integration test verifies planted ignored src/dist and node_modules artifacts in the caller tree never execute.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Scope: directly linked issue #2084. The live broken-commit run is a manual, operational check. It needs VS Code, provider credentials, and Docker or Podman. This assessment treats it as non-coding and excludes it. Its coding-level equivalent is covered by the reference-solution tests.

Met objectives (code at reviewed head, per the whole-PR summary):

  • Five frozen fixtures with workspace, prompt, tool policy, and limits: coding-fixtures.ts.
  • Immutable initial-state digest and fresh workspace per run: initialStateDigest and buildFreshWorkspace in coding-workspace.ts. Existing target directories are rejected.
  • Hidden tests copied into a fresh grading copy, excluded from the agent workspace: buildGradingCopy.
  • Disposable container grading with networking disabled, resource limits, read-only root, dropped capabilities, and no credential: container-runtime.ts, coding-run.ts.
  • Grader timeout and crash map to grading failure, not incorrect: container-runtime.ts, coding-grader.ts, coding-outcomes.ts.
  • Correct and incorrect reference solutions per fixture, with a test that checks grader verdicts: coding-fixtures.ts, coding-reference-solutions.test.ts.
  • Five distinct outcomes: classifyRunOutcome in coding-outcomes.ts.
  • Pinned inputs and incompatibility flag: comparePins in coding-pins.ts.
  • Three repetitions by default: DEFAULT_REPETITIONS in coding-stats.ts.
  • No significance claim: STATISTICAL_POLICY in coding-stats.ts.
  • Cost per successful task, unavailable when data is incomplete: costPerSuccessfulTask in coding-metrics.ts.
  • Unsupported telemetry marked unavailable: UNSUPPORTED_TELEMETRY in coding-metrics.ts.
  • Price table with identifier and date, and no invented rates: coding-pricing.ts.
  • JSON and Markdown reports: coding-report.ts.
  • Unit tests for graders and report logic: the *.test.ts files listed in the summary.

Unmet objective [#2084]: "Report paired differences with uncertainty." coding-stats.ts gives a Wilson interval for each side's success rate only. PairedOutcomeDiff reports counts (improved, regressed, unchanged) with no interval. PairedNumericDiff reports mean, min, and max deltas with no interval. No uncertainty measure describes the paired difference itself. The Markdown renderer in coding-report.ts shows only paired outcome counts. It omits paired duration and cost deltas, which appear only in the JSON report.

Uncertainty: the container path is tested through a mocked container CLI in the summary. Live container behavior is not exercised in unit tests.

Resolution

Add an uncertainty measure for each paired difference. Examples are a paired success-rate difference with an interval, or a bootstrap interval for paired numeric deltas. Include that uncertainty in both PairedOutcomeDiff and PairedNumericDiff and in the JSON report. Render the paired outcome, duration, and cost differences, with their uncertainty, in the Markdown report in renderMarkdownReport. Add unit tests in coding-stats.test.ts and coding-report.test.ts for these values. Keep the report free of significance claims.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

executeSideFlow can publish a completion result after interruption. It checks isInterrupted() at line 82, then awaits artifact writes at lines 84-89 and writes side-results.json at line 90 without another check or rollback. If SIGINT or SIGTERM arrives during an artifact write or buildResult, the signal handler sets the interrupt flag, but the flow still publishes the result. A partial artifact tree can then be paired with a consumable side result, contrary to the side publication contract. The prior stale-result ordering defect is addressed: invalidateSideArtifacts now removes side-results.json before artifacts at lines 435-436.

Resolution

Make side publication interruption-safe. Recheck the interrupt flag after each awaited artifact write and immediately after the atomic side-results.json write. If interruption occurs, remove the result and partial artifacts, await that cleanup, and return completed: false. Only return completed: true when all persistence steps finish without interruption. Add a test that interrupts during artifact persistence and verifies that no side result or partial artifacts remain.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused regression coverage remains incomplete. launcher.ts adds bounded final-workspace capture in readWorkspaceFiles (lines 65-98) and exposes it through createHostRuntime().readFinalWorkspace() (lines 240-243), but launcher.test.ts is unchanged and does not call this API. It therefore misses the pre-workspace error, nested paths, .git/node_modules exclusion, oversized-file handling, total-byte and file-count limits, and truncated results. grader-driver.mjs adds discovery, TAP parsing, runner-error, no-test, cancellation, failure-name, and missing-output-path branches (lines 42-165), while grader-driver.test.ts covers only one passing publication and rename-failure cleanup. Parser and runtime-mapping tests do not exercise the real driver branches.

Resolution

Add lowest-layer tests for createHostRuntime().readFinalWorkspace() covering the pre-workspace error, nested relative paths, skipped directories, oversized files, total-size and file-count limits, and truncated. Add subprocess tests for grader-driver.mjs covering pass and fail results, no discovered tests, unsupported files, child runner errors, missing TAP summaries, cancellation handling, the 50-name failure limit, and the missing output-path exit. Keep the existing parser and runtime mapping tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed local grading path still leaks descendant processes after timeout. createLocalSubprocessGradingRuntime starts only the driver with timeout and killSignal: "SIGKILL" (coding-grader.ts:124-130), without a process group. The driver starts one node --test child per file and waits for it without timeout or cleanup (grader-driver.mjs:82-97). If a test file leaves a timer or descendant running, killing the driver does not terminate that child. The runtime then returns and runGrader removes the grading copy (coding-grader.ts:99), while the child can continue running and access the removed workspace.

Resolution

Run the local driver in a dedicated process group. Track each active test child and terminate its process group on timeout or cancellation, escalating from SIGTERM to SIGKILL. Wait for the full process group to exit before returning. Remove grading output and the grading copy only after all test children exit. Add a regression test with a test file that leaves a persistent timer or descendant, and verify that no process remains after timeout.

146-146: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comment is refuted. coding-side.mts defaults a missing CODING_EVALS_SIDE value to "baseline" and always writes side-results.json. The environment variable is only set by paired comparisons to record the baseline or candidate label.

scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.ts: 1

68-69: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No shifted pairs occur in the supported side-output path.

scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts iterates over every requested repIndex and pushes either the successful record or an infrastructure-failure record. It writes side-results.json only after all repetitions complete. An interruption before that write does not produce a partial side result for the report to pair.

The report accepts arbitrary synthetic SideResult values, but that does not establish a defect in the supported coding-evaluation workflow.

🟡 Minor · Treat truncated workspace captures as infrastructure failures. · coding-run.ts:125-143

scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.ts:125-143
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat truncated workspace captures as infrastructure failures.

readWorkspaceFiles returns partial files after a capture limit is reached. runCodingFixtureOnce still grades those files. If the capture omits a required solution file, the hidden tests can fail and classify the correct agent result as incorrect. Skip grading when snapshot.truncated is true and classify the run as infrastructure-failure.

In runCodingFixtureOnce, skip runGrader when the workspace snapshot is
truncated, and propagate the truncation state to outcome classification so the
run is reported as an infrastructure failure rather than incorrect. Preserve
grading for complete snapshots.

receive an allowlisted environment instead of inheriting process.env; exclude
provider credentials and unrelated secrets while retaining any explicitly
approved variables needed by pnpm.
- Line 120: Register SIGINT and SIGTERM handlers before spawning the detached
child process, and have them terminate its process group with the existing
timeout cleanup’s SIGTERM-then-SIGKILL sequence. Then run the driver’s cleanup
and exit so interrupted runs do not leave the child or temporary resources
behind.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-compare.ts:

expected side, require all SideResultFile pin fields including
runnerEnvironment, and reject runs without object metrics. Pass the side from
runSide and update direct validateSideResultFile calls in coding-report.test.ts
to provide it.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.test.ts:
- Around line 203-208: Update the rejection assertions for
validateSideResultFile to match each input case against its corresponding
validator error message, including commit mismatch, missing pins, invalid null
input, and missing runs; ensure the tests reject the intended condition rather
than any thrown error.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.test.ts:
- Around line 195-218: Add observer-level rejection tests for partial, blank,
and wrong-say completion messages using stopOnFinalCompletionMessage. Extend the
syntheticRuntime setup as needed and add a runCodingFixtureOnce case with a
partial completion message that asserts TASK_RUN_TIMEOUT, a timed-out outcome,
and no grading.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.ts:
- Around line 62-70: Update the runner teardown path used with
stopOnFinalCompletionMessage so a stop caused by a final completion message
still performs the bounded usage drain; preserve the existing session-loss
behavior and avoid draining unrelated stopped runs.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-trust.test.ts:
- Around line 61-66: Replace the try/catch around assertCommitsApproved in this
test with assert.throws so the test fails if the call returns normally. Validate
that the rejection is an UntrustedCommitError with the expected message and that
its commits contain exactly sha("b").

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts:
- Around line 79-86: Cap the stdout and stderr buffers in `exec` so container
output cannot grow host memory without bound. Define a shared output limit near
`exec` and append only up to that limit in both data handlers, preserving the
existing captured output for `imageDigest`, `pull`, and `remove`.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/fs-atomic.test.ts:
- Around line 41-44: Update the failure case in “preserves the previous file and
leaves no temp residue when a write fails” to make the rename fail after the
temp file is written: create a non-empty blocker directory and call
writeFileAtomic with that directory as the target. Keep the existing assertion
that the previous file remains intact, and check the directory entries to ensure
no temp file remains.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/README.md:
- Line 152: Update the paired comparison reader to load the shared
side-results.json filename written by coding-side.mts, rather than choosing
baseline-results.json or candidate-results.json. Change sideResultFileName and
its use in the paired driver to take no side argument and return the filename
documented by the README.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.test.ts:
- Around line 211-215: Add an accept-path test alongside the
`validateSideResultFile` test that supplies one well-formed run with
object-valued `metrics` using `validatedFile`, then assert the validated result
contains one run.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts:
- Around line 116-120: Add a side-level interrupt flag in the coding-side flow
and set it on SIGINT and SIGTERM. Check the flag before each repetition in the
CODING_FIXTURE_BUNDLES loop and before publishing side-results.json; abort when
interrupted so later repetitions and result publication do not proceed.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts:
- Around line 227-228: In the run flow, inspect the local image with
selected.imageDigest before calling selected.pull; pull only when no local
digest is found, then resolve the digest again. Preserve the existing
resolvedDigest when lookup still yields no digest, and update the pull-order and
pull-failure tests in container-runtime.test.ts to cover the conditional pull
behavior.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/side-process-guard.ts:
- Around line 20-27: Update groupAlive so it returns false only when
process.kill reports ESRCH; treat other errors, including EPERM, as alive so
interrupt() can continue its SIGKILL escalation.

134-152: Add a test for the 0o777 output-directory mode.

No test checks that outDir is world-writable before the container starts. The fs.chmod(outDir, 0o777) call in container-runtime.ts is the only guard against --cap-drop ALL blocking /out/result.json. A regression there fails only under a real engine.

In the run stub, call fs.stat(outDirFromArgs(args)) and assert (mode & 0o777) === 0o777.

This repeats the earlier review point on container-runtime.ts that asked for a permission regression test.

150-154: An interrupt during fs.mkdir still lets the side spawn.

If SIGINT or SIGTERM arrives during the await fs.mkdir on Line 152, sideGuard.interrupt() finds no tracked pid. It marks the guard as interrupted and returns "none". Line 154 then spawns the side without another check. track() does not stop the new child. A repeated signal returns early on Line 63. The side runs with the credential until its wall clock expires.

Check isInterrupted() synchronously immediately before spawn, inside the Promise executor.

Proposed fix

207-207: An interrupt exits with code 1, not 130 or 143.

On an interrupt, the side exits non-zero and Line 207 throws. The error propagates after finally. The conventional exit codes on Lines 258-259 run only when the flow completes normally. Catch the interrupt error at the outer boundary, finish cleanup, and exit with the signal code.

- Around line 239-241: Update interruptedRun to record whether dir exists after
the flow resolves but before the helper’s finally removes it, and return that
state with the outcome and sides. In the SIGINT and SIGTERM tests, assert the
recorded state instead of checking dir after interruptedRun completes.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-compare-script.test.ts:
- Line 227: Update runDriverUntilSignal so failures while waiting for the PID
file or driver exit trigger cleanup: kill the recorded process group using its
negative PID, terminate and wait for the driver to exit, then remove dir.
Preserve the successful return of dir and worktreeGroupPid so expectSignalExit
can perform its existing cleanup.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

A second SIGINT/SIGTERM overwrites prepSettled and lets cleanup skip the escalation wait.

createSideProcessGuard().interrupt() returns "none" at once when the guard is already interrupted (side-process-guard.ts lines 65-104). A second signal therefore replaces the pending escalation promise with an already-resolved one. A double Ctrl-C is the realistic trigger.

The first escalation is still running its SIGTERM grace loop. The catch block then calls removePreparedTree(), which awaits only the resolved promise. Two failures follow:

  • git worktree remove and fs.rm run while the preparation group (pnpm install or pnpm build) can still write into the tree.
  • process.exit(...) at Line 305 ends the process before the escalation reaches its SIGKILL step. A child that ignores SIGTERM can then outlive the side.

This contradicts the comment at Lines 168-170 and the README statement that the side waits for the escalation before it removes its worktree. Start the escalation only on the first signal and keep that promise.

Add a regression test in coding-side.test.ts. Use a pnpm shim that traps SIGTERM during install. Send SIGINT twice. Assert that the group is gone and the worktree is removed before exit 130.

Review comment at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts around lines 144 - 147:
Update onSideInterrupt to start the preparation escalation only on the first
signal and retain its promise; repeated SIGINT/SIGTERM signals must not
overwrite prepSettled with an already-resolved promise. Add a regression test in
coding-side.test.ts confirming cleanup waits for escalation after repeated
signals.
