pubsub: breaking changes to values and types returned - #740
Breaking changes for 4.0.0 to the values and types the library hands back: presence timestamps, stats interval times, the HttpPaginatedResponse from request(), push removals, and device push details. Each change is one commit with its own UPDATING.md entry and its own test/uts/deviations.md update. Durations keep their current units, and ably.pubsub.server exports nothing new.
Commits
PresenceMessage.timestamp is milliseconds since the epoch (TP3g). The timestamp was a naive datetime built on the deprecated utcfromtimestamp, while synthesized LEAVEs got an aware datetime.now(timezone.utc) that bypassed the clock. It is now the int from the wire, and synthesized LEAVEs read the clock's now_ms(). This closes the timezone-split deviation, candidate 2.4. Presence history's start/end now also accept an aware datetime, as channel history does. Migration:datetime.fromtimestamp(ts / 1000, tz=timezone.utc). This breaks silently:== against a datetime now returns False. The UPDATING.md entry says so in bold.
The TP3 ProtocolMessage tests decode the way the channel does (test-only, not breaking). This commit is extra, beyond the six requested; see below.
Stats.interval_time is a timezone-aware UTC datetime (TS12p). After the first commit, nothing under ably/ calls utcfromtimestamp. Migration: compare with aware datetimes. Comparing with a naive datetime using < now raises TypeError, and == now returns False.
HttpPaginatedResponse.error_code is an int (HP6). It is still None when the header is absent. Migration: compare with an int. This breaks silently:== '40101' now returns False. The entry says so in bold.
HttpPaginatedResponse.headers is a read-only, case-insensitive mapping (HP8). It is a ResponseHeaders (a collections.abc.Mapping). Names are still lower-cased, and a repeated header's values are still joined with ', '. HP8's prose says "Array of key value pairs", but the IDL says Dict<String, String> and the UTS looks headers up by name (headers["Content-Type"]), so this follows the IDL. Migration:for k, v in headers becomes for k, v in headers.items().
Push removals return None, and PaginatedResult.response is gone.remove and remove_where on device registrations and on channel subscriptions no longer return the HTTP response. PaginatedResult no longer keeps the response. HttpPaginatedResponse reads its status code and headers once, when it is constructed, so status_code, success, error_code, error_message and headers work as before. Migration: drop status_code == 204 checks, since a failed removal raises. Read the HttpPaginatedResponse attributes instead of .response.
DevicePushDetails (PCD7, PCP1–PCP4). DeviceDetails.push is now a DevicePushDetails with recipient, state and error_reason (an AblyException). push is still accepted as a dict. DeviceDetails.from_dict and PushChannelSubscription.from_dict used cls(**obj), so any field the server added raised TypeError. They now ignore unknown fields, and so does DevicePushDetails.from_dict. Migration:device.push['recipient'] becomes device.push.recipient.
Skipped, scoped down, or beyond the brief
Extra commit, TP3a/TP3d/TP3g. The brief asked me to check that TP3g's ProtocolMessage-timestamp fallback is still handled. It is: RealtimeChannel._on_message calls Message.update_inner_message_fields, which fills each presence entry's missing id, connectionId and timestamp. The three UTS tests were gated as "unimplemented" only because their decoding helper skipped that call. The helper now makes the call, the three tests are un-gated, and the refuted claim is recorded under Investigated and not defects. This commit only touches tests and can be dropped if you'd rather take it separately.
DevicePushDetails is not exported from ably.pubsub.server.DeviceDetails and PushChannelSubscription are exported, so the consistent choice would be to add it, but that decision is still open. For now it is importable from ably.pubsub.types.device, next to DeviceDetails. It rarely needs importing, because push can be given as a dict.
PaginatedResult.response is removed outright, not renamed to a private attribute. Nothing internal read it after construction.
DevicePushDetails.as_dict drops unknown push fields. Saving a device with push={'color': 'red'} now sends push: {}. The server should still reject it, but I couldn't run test_admin_device_registrations_save, which relies on that.
Channel history still truncates a datetime bound to the second.format_time_param uses timegm(utctimetuple()). Presence history keeps millisecond precision, as it did before. I left channel history alone.
test/uts: 1571 passed and 185 skipped before, 1574 passed and 182 skipped after.
RUN_DEVIATIONS=1: 170 failed, 1571 passed and 15 skipped before; 167 failed, 1574 passed and 15 skipped after. The deviations.md header is updated to match.
Legacy test/ably tests were edited but not run: httppresence_test.py, presencemap_test.py, httpstats_test.py, httprequest_test.py and httppush_test.py. In httprequest_test.py, test_headers and test_version read result.response.request.headers. They now observe the request through a respx route and use @dont_vary_protocol.
All four PRs edit the deviations.md header counts and append to the 3.x→4.0.0 section of UPDATING.md, so those two files will conflict with whichever lands first. The header sentence on the "further defects with no test of their own" also overlaps #738 if that PR closes the enterClient one. Other shared files touch different hunks and will probably merge cleanly, but check them:
Draft #656, which targets main, replaced utcfromtimestamp with fromtimestamp. On integration/v4 it is superseded by the first two commits here: presence timestamps are no longer datetimes, and no utcfromtimestamp remains. I haven't touched #656.
PresenceMessage.timestamp was decoded into a naive datetime through the
deprecated datetime.utcfromtimestamp, while the LEAVE messages the client
synthesizes (RTP19, RTP19a) were stamped with an aware
datetime.now(timezone.utc), so the two could not be compared, and the
synthesized ones bypassed the client's clock. TP3g gives the timestamp as
milliseconds since the epoch, which is what Message.timestamp already is.
The timestamp is now the int from the wire, sent back unchanged by
to_encoded, and a synthesized LEAVE takes its timestamp from the clock's
now_ms(). The RTP2b1 newness check compares timestamps numerically, and
the realtime channel still fills a missing timestamp from the
ProtocolMessage's before decoding (TP3g). Presence history's start and end
now also accept an aware datetime, as channel history does, where
before an aware one raised TypeError; a naive one is still read as UTC.
This is a breaking change, and a silent one: comparing a timestamp with ==
against a datetime now returns False. Callers that need a datetime convert
with datetime.fromtimestamp(timestamp / 1000, tz=timezone.utc). The UTS
tests drop their datetime workarounds and assert the specification's
millisecond values, which closes the timezone-split deviation.

The TP3a, TP3d and TP3g UTS tests were gated as unimplemented, on the
reading that the realtime channel decodes a presence array with no
context from its ProtocolMessage. It does not: RealtimeChannel._on_message
calls Message.update_inner_message_fields first, which fills each presence
entry's missing id, connectionId and timestamp from the ProtocolMessage.
The tests' decoding helper skipped that call.
The helper now makes it, so the three tests pass and are un-gated. TP3g's
asserts the raw millisecond value, which it can only do now that
PresenceMessage.timestamp is milliseconds. No SDK code changes, and nothing
breaks. deviations.md drops the row, records the refuted claim under
Investigated and not defects, and recounts.

Stats.interval_time was parsed from the intervalId with strptime and left
naive, although an intervalId is always a UTC time. TS12p asks for a
language-idiomatic Time, and for Python that is an aware datetime: a naive
one says nothing about its zone and could not be compared with the aware
datetimes the rest of an application holds.
interval_time is now the same instant with tzinfo set to UTC. This is a
breaking change: an ordering comparison against a naive datetime now
raises TypeError, and == against one quietly returns False. Callers must
compare it with aware datetimes, for example datetime(..., tzinfo=
timezone.utc). With PresenceMessage.timestamp no longer decoded through
it, nothing under ably/ calls datetime.utcfromtimestamp.

HttpPaginatedResponse.error_code returned the X-Ably-Errorcode header as
the server sent it, a string such as '40101', where HP6 makes errorCode an
integer, and every other error code the library exposes, on
AblyException and ErrorInfo, is an int.
error_code is now the header parsed as an int, and still None when the
header is absent. This is a breaking change, and a silent one: a caller
comparing error_code with a string, as in == '40101', now gets False.
Callers must compare it with an int. The UTS tests drop their string
assertions for the specification's integer ones, which closes the HP6
deviation.

HttpPaginatedResponse.headers returned a list of (name, value) pairs, so a
caller could not look a header up by name without converting the list,
and lost the case-insensitivity HTTP header names have. HP8's prose calls
headers an array of key value pairs, but the IDL types it
Dict<String, String>, and the UTS looks headers up by name in their
original case, as in headers["Content-Type"].
headers is now a ResponseHeaders, a read-only Mapping looked up by name
case-insensitively. As before, names are lower-cased and a repeated
header's values are joined with ', '. This is a breaking change: iterating
the mapping yields only the names, so `for name, value in headers` must
become `for name, value in headers.items()`, and code relying on list
methods or indexing by position must look headers up by name. The UTS
test asserts the specification's lookups directly, which closes the HP8
deviation.

…onse
remove and remove_where on push.admin.device_registrations and
push.admin.channel_subscriptions returned the HTTP response of the DELETE,
and every PaginatedResult carried the HTTP response it was built from as a
public response attribute, so the library's public surface handed out the
underlying httpx.Response. RSH1b4, RSH1b5, RSH1c4 and RSH1c5 give these
removals no return value, and nothing in TG or HP asks for the response.
The four removals now return None, and a failed one still raises
AblyException. PaginatedResult no longer keeps the response;
HttpPaginatedResponse reads its status code and headers from it once, at
construction, so status_code, success, error_code, error_message and
headers work as before. This is a breaking change: callers that checked
remove()'s status_code must stop, since success is the absence of an
exception, and callers that read result.response must read the dedicated
HttpPaginatedResponse attributes instead. The UTS tests assert that the
removals return None, which closes the push remove return-value note.

DeviceDetails.push was the dict the server sent, where PCD7 types it as a
DevicePushDetails with the recipient, state and errorReason of PCP2-PCP4.
And DeviceDetails.from_dict and PushChannelSubscription.from_dict passed
every key of the decoded object to the constructor with cls(**obj), so a
field the server added that the class did not know raised TypeError and
failed the whole get, list or save.
DeviceDetails.push is now a DevicePushDetails, built from a dict or taken
as one, which validates the recipient's transportType as DeviceDetails
used to and decodes errorReason into an AblyException. Both from_dict
methods, and DevicePushDetails', now ignore fields they do not model.
DevicePushDetails lives beside DeviceDetails in ably.pubsub.types.device
and is not added to ably.pubsub.server, whose exports are still to be
decided.
This is a breaking change: device.push['recipient'] now raises TypeError,
and callers must read device.push.recipient, .state and .error_reason. A
device can still be built or saved with push given as a dict. A misspelled
key in a dict passed to save() is now ignored rather than rejected. The
UTS tests build devices with DevicePushDetails as the specification does,
which closes the DevicePushDetails missing-accessor row.

This change updates timestamp handling, HTTP response access, and push API representations. Presence timestamps now use integer milliseconds, statistics intervals use UTC-aware datetimes, and push details use a typed model. Push removal methods now return None. Tests and migration guidance reflect these changes.

Timestamp representations and clock use ably/pubsub/types/presence.py, ably/pubsub/types/stats.py, ably/pubsub/realtime/presence.py, test/ably/*, test/uts/*presence*, test/unit/stats_test.py, UPDATING.md
Presence timestamps use integer milliseconds. Statistics interval times use UTC-aware datetimes. Synthesized LEAVE timestamps use the selected clock. Related tests and migration guidance use these representations.
Response headers use a read-only, case-insensitive mapping, and error codes use integers. PaginatedResult.response is no longer available. Tests and migration guidance reflect the updated response access.
Push data models and decoding ably/pubsub/types/device.py, ably/pubsub/types/channelsubscription.py, test/unit/push_types_test.py, test/uts/rest/integration/push_*_test.py, test/uts/rest/unit/push/*, UPDATING.md
DeviceDetails.push uses DevicePushDetails. Device and channel-subscription decoding filters unknown fields. Tests use the typed push model and check serialization and validation.
Device-registration and channel-subscription removal methods now return None. Tests check the return value while retaining checks for removal effects and errors.
Readers copying the Stats migration example may encounter a NameError. Adding the import is straightforward; the issue does not otherwise block merging.

Import timezone in the Stats migration example.
If existing code imports only datetime, the 4.0.0 example raises NameError at timezone.utc. Add from datetime import datetime, timezone to this example so readers can apply it independently.

PresenceMessage.timestampis milliseconds since the epoch (TP3g). The timestamp was a naivedatetimebuilt on the deprecatedutcfromtimestamp, while synthesized LEAVEs got an awaredatetime.now(timezone.utc)that bypassed the clock.
