Purpose

Addresses the label/group identity request in #11, including USB controllers moving between ports. Linux identifies the controller and channel, not the physical fan plugged into it.

Behavior

  • Recover legacy /sys/devices PWM paths after HID instance and hwmon renumbering, preserving the USB port and channel.
  • Capture a unique VID:PID + USB serial + controller-relative interface/channel binding on label/configuration save and service startup. Labels store an encoded usb: key; configurations keep controller_identity alongside the resolved runtime controller path.
  • Resolve a recorded serial after port, bus, or hub changes, even if an identical model occupies the old port. A missing or ambiguous recorded identity never falls back to a VID:PID guess or a replacement at the old path. Runtime control is unassigned while the saved binding remains available for recovery.
  • Controllers without a unique serial retain separate same-port path bindings. Existing devices with duplicate serials are not collapsed into an ambiguous serial key.
  • Deduplicate migrated labels: current entries win over stale entries, otherwise the last stale label wins. Current manual fan assignments take precedence over stale configurations. A losing live assignment cannot start a second loop, and its binding remains saved for recovery.
  • Update every label reader (settings/API/Airflow), preserve dashboard flags, and change only controller fields when rewriting a configuration so unrelated escaped values remain intact.

Limitations

A serial must be captured before a port move. If an older configuration's device has already moved, its serial cannot be recovered from a dead path: reassign it once. Restart the service after a driver reload or USB port move. This does not add hot-plug monitoring.

The export/import request in #11 is not implemented by this PR.

Verification

  • tests/run-all.sh: all 25 test files passed.
  • New serial-identity regression covers port/bus/hub changes with HID renumbering, replacements, absent/duplicate serials, identity recovery, duplicate serials present at upgrade, different VID:PID pairs sharing a serial, current/stale config ownership in both filename orders, and preservation of escaped group labels.
  • Isolated mount/PID-namespace runtime smoke exercised the actual savelabel, config-save, and getpwm endpoints and service startup against synthetic sysfs. Verified serial capture, a move with a replacement at the old port, moved-label editing/deletion, unresolved-service skipping, and duplicate-serial label/config saves.
  • PHP syntax and shell syntax checks passed. No physical-controller verification yet.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recovery of saved PWM paths after device paths change, while avoiding ambiguous matches and conflicts with existing assignments.
    • Preserved labels—including empty labels and flags—during migration, with current-path entries taking precedence when duplicates exist.
    • Prevented fan-control loops from starting for configurations with missing or unwritable controllers.
  • New Features
    • Saved identities for uniquely identified USB controllers, allowing assignments and labels to follow them across port changes. Unresolved or ambiguous identities remain saved but unassigned.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on device identity, migration behavior, and when to reassign controllers or restart the service.

Walkthrough

The change adds PWM path recovery and USB identity matching. Label and controller migration use current paths or unique identities. Plugin code uses the shared label loader, saves controller identities, and skips startup for empty or non-writable controller paths.

Changes

PWM identity and migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve PWM paths and identities
src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/Common.php
Path resolution retains existing paths and accepts moved-path matches only when unique. USB identities use validated vendor and product IDs, serial, and normalized interface and channel paths.
Migrate labels and controller configurations
src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/Common.php, tests/pwm_path_migration_test.php, tests/usb_identity_test.php
Label migration uses current paths or unique identities and retains unmatched entries. Controller migration preserves unresolved identities, gives current assignments precedence, and avoids assigning one PWM to multiple configurations. Tests cover path moves, ambiguous identities, conflicts, and recovery.
Wire identity-aware labels and controller startup
src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/FanBlockRender.php, src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/FanctrlLogic.php, src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/FcpAirflow.php, src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/update.fanctrlplus2.php, src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/scripts/rc.fanctrlplus2, README.md
Label consumers use the shared label loader. Saved configurations record controller identities when available. Startup skips configurations with empty or non-writable controller paths. The README describes identity and migration behavior.

  • observed — Modified behavior in tests/pwm_path_migration_test.php: Adds expectations for path lookup across USB re-enumeration and platform hwmon renumbering, plus non-matches for a different USB port, a missing channel, ambiguous same-port instances, class paths, and glob-like saved paths. Also expects an existing path to be retained.
  • observed — Modified behavior in tests/pwm_path_migration_test.php: Adds configuration fixtures with stale and current PWM labels and controller assignments, calls migrate_cfg_and_labels, and checks expected label selection and controller migration outcomes.
  • observed — Modified behavior in tests/pwm_path_migration_test.php: Removes the temporary fixture directory, writes accumulated failures to stderr and exits with status 1 when any occur; otherwise prints a success message.

…paths

A USB HID controller gets a new instance suffix (0003:VID:PID.NNNN) each
time it enumerates, and the hwmonN index follows probe order. The startup
migration resolved such paths through /sys/class/hwmon/hwmonN, which can
belong to another chip after renumbering, so labels and fan groups for
the controller were left pointing at a path that no longer exists.

Resolve a saved /sys/devices path by wildcarding only those two volatile
parts first, keeping the chip-name lookup as the fallback.

Refs #11
Address review: avoid str_contains on the PHP 7.4 startup path, keep paths
that still exist, refuse ambiguous or glob-like matches, and do not fall
back to the hwmonN name lookup for a USB HID path that was not found.

A user who re-labeled and re-assigned fans after a renumbering has entries
for the current path next to stale ones for the old instance. Migrating
the stale ones made duplicate label keys, where savelabel edits the first
line while the readers use the last, and could point two fans at one PWM.
The label already saved for the current path now wins, and a fan is not
moved onto a PWM another fan controls.
Among stale lines landing on one path, keep the last, as the label
readers do, rather than the first. Leave empty labels alone, and pass
log messages, which now carry saved paths, to logger as one quoted
argument.

Capture VID:PID, serial and controller-relative PWM channel at save and startup, then resolve labels and runtime controller paths from that binding. A saved serial follows the controller even when another identical model occupies the old port; missing or ambiguous bindings remain saved but cannot drive a replacement.

Only capture unique serials. Existing duplicated-serial controllers retain their separate port bindings. Current manual assignments take precedence over stale migrated configurations, and losing live assignments stop without discarding their saved binding. Rewrite only controller fields so migration preserves unrelated escaped configuration data.

Verified with 25 test files and an isolated mount/PID namespace exercising real label/config save endpoints, getpwm and service startup.

An empty posted runtime path is not an explicit reassignment. Read the prior configuration before renaming or overwriting it and preserve its serial identity or legacy path binding when unresolved. A nonempty selection still captures the replacement controller.

Verified failing-before/passing-after through the real save endpoint in an isolated mount/PID namespace: empty save and rename preserve the identity, unrelated interval changes persist, reconnect restores control, explicit reassignment replaces the identity, and legacy path bindings survive. All 25 test files pass.

🟡 Minor · Remove the stored USB identity when the user clears a label. · FanctrlLogic.php:113-125

src/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/fanctrlplus2/include/FanctrlLogic.php:113-125
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the stored USB identity when the user clears a label.

When a user clears a label while the PWM’s USB identity is ambiguous, fcp_unique_pwm_identity($pwm) returns null, so $key becomes the current PWM path. The save removes that path entry but leaves the old usb: entry. The loader ignores that entry while the identity is ambiguous, then can restore the cleared label when the identity becomes unique again.

Suggested fix
+    $identity = fcp_pwm_identity($pwm);
     $key = fcp_unique_pwm_identity($pwm) ?? $pwm;

Apply CodeRabbit's suggested deletion rule: also obtain the raw PWM identity and remove its stored entry when the label is cleared, even while that serial is ambiguous. Preserve identity entries for nonempty ambiguous saves and when no identity is available.

Verified failing-before/passing-after through the real label endpoint in an isolated mount/PID namespace. Cleared labels stay cleared after ambiguity resolves; nonempty ambiguous saves, unrelated labels, dashboard flags and no-serial deletion remain unchanged. All 25 test files pass.

Fixed the outside-diff label-clearing finding from #12 (review) in 322007c, using the suggested fix exactly: obtain the raw PWM identity and remove its stored entry only when clearing the label, including during ambiguity. Nonempty ambiguous saves and unavailable identities retain their previous behavior.

Verified failing-before/passing-after through the real savelabel endpoint in an isolated mount/PID namespace: the cleared label no longer returns when ambiguity resolves; unrelated labels/flags and no-serial deletion remain intact. All 25 tests pass. No additional review wait is required for this suggested-fix-only change.
