The Realtime upstream WebSocket ignored the proxy environment. The reqwest-based upstream calls (chat, embeddings, media downloads and the rest) all go through HTTPS_PROXY / HTTP_PROXY / ALL_PROXY / NO_PROXY, but /v1/realtime dialled the provider directly, so a gateway that can only reach the internet through a forward proxy could not serve Realtime. The other non-reqwest stack with the same gap, the AWS SDK client behind Bedrock, is fixed separately in #1328. This PR doesn't touch it.

The dial now goes through a new aisix_gateway::upstream_dial::connect, which picks the proxy with the same Matcher::from_system() the reqwest clients use:

  • a wss:// upstream reads HTTPS_PROXY, a ws:// one HTTP_PROXY, each falling back to ALL_PROXY; NO_PROXY exempts a host from both
  • a proxied upstream is reached through an HTTP CONNECT tunnel (hyper-util's Tunnel, the same one reqwest uses), with the proxy URL's userinfo sent as Proxy-Authorization: Basic
  • the upstream TLS, under upstream.tls (verify, ca_file), and the WebSocket handshake run inside the tunnel
  • an https:// proxy is itself reached over TLS under the same upstream.tls settings
  • a SOCKS proxy fails the session as an ordinary upstream connect failure (error frame + 1011 close, 502 in the access log). It is never bypassed with a direct dial. reqwest is built without SOCKS support here, so no upstream path can use one.

upstream.connect_timeout still bounds the whole dial, now including the proxy connect and the CONNECT exchange. The outbound-settings scan in upstream_http now also covers the new client_async_tls_with_config call site. It requires every WebSocket dial site to open its stream through upstream_dial::connect, so neither the connector, the budget nor the proxy can be dropped unnoticed. As before, Realtime presents no client certificate. That now also applies to the TLS hop to an https:// proxy.

Behavior change: in a deployment with HTTPS_PROXY (or ALL_PROXY) set, Realtime sessions now go through that proxy unless NO_PROXY covers the provider host. Before, they always connected directly. A deployment that relied on Realtime bypassing the proxy has to add the provider's host to NO_PROXY. Nothing changes without proxy variables. A proxy variable with a scheme the matcher doesn't recognise is ignored here, as it is for every other upstream.

Tests: tests/e2e/src/cases/realtime-env-proxy-e2e.test.ts runs a real gateway against a CONNECT proxy that demands credentials:

  • A wss:// upstream whose host name resolves nowhere, so only the proxy can reach it, completes a session through the tunnel with the expected Proxy-Authorization. This case fails on main (the session gets an error frame instead of response.done).
  • A NO_PROXY host is dialled directly and never reaches the proxy.
  • A wss:// upstream works through an https:// (TLS) proxy.
  • A ws:// upstream whose HTTP_PROXY is SOCKS fails the session, and neither the SOCKS listener nor the upstream sees a connection.

The Realtime upstream connection was the one upstream call that ignored
HTTPS_PROXY / HTTP_PROXY / ALL_PROXY / NO_PROXY, so a gateway that reaches
the internet only through a forward proxy served every endpoint except
/v1/realtime.

The dial now picks its proxy with the same matcher the reqwest upstream
clients use: a wss:// upstream reads HTTPS_PROXY, a ws:// one HTTP_PROXY,
each falling back to ALL_PROXY, and NO_PROXY exempts a host. A proxied
upstream is reached through an HTTP CONNECT tunnel carrying the proxy
URL's credentials as Proxy-Authorization; the upstream TLS (under
upstream.tls) and the WebSocket handshake run inside it. An https://
proxy is itself reached over TLS under upstream.tls. A SOCKS proxy fails
the session as an upstream connect failure rather than being bypassed.
upstream.connect_timeout still bounds the whole dial, tunnel included.

📝 Walkthrough

Realtime WebSocket upstream connections now use a gateway dialer that supports direct connections and HTTP CONNECT proxy tunnels. The dialer supports HTTP and HTTPS proxies, proxy credentials, and NO_PROXY bypasses. End-to-end tests cover proxy routing and unsupported SOCKS proxies.

Changes: Realtime proxy-aware dialing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared upstream dialer
crates/aisix-gateway/Cargo.toml, crates/aisix-gateway/src/lib.rs, crates/aisix-gateway/src/upstream_dial.rs
The gateway exports an asynchronous upstream stream and connection function. It selects direct or proxy connections, supports HTTP and HTTPS CONNECT proxies with optional Basic credentials, and rejects unsupported proxy schemes.
Realtime WebSocket integration
crates/aisix-proxy/src/realtime.rs, crates/aisix-gateway/src/upstream_http.rs
Realtime connections use the shared dialer and gateway Rustls configuration before the WebSocket handshake. The configured timeout covers the full connection flow. Scan expectations check the shared connector and timeout.
Proxy environment end-to-end coverage
tests/e2e/src/cases/realtime-env-proxy-e2e.test.ts
Tests cover authenticated HTTP and HTTPS proxy tunnels, direct connections for NO_PROXY hosts, and SOCKS proxy failures without direct fallback.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6b3fb

The change adds proxy-aware dialing for Realtime WebSockets. The only open item is a test seeding-order cleanup that could make the readiness gate fragile if the seed set grows. It is safe to merge with owner awareness.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No explicit security-check failure was introduced by the pull request. Category 1: No issues found; the new dialer does not log, serialize, or return proxy credentials or authentication headers, and the client-facing error remains generic. Category 2: No issues found; the changes add no database persistence. Category 3: No issues found; no mutating endpoint or permission check changed. Category 4: No issues found; no cross-resource access changed. Category 5: No issues found; HTTPS proxy and upstream TLS use the shared rustls configuration, certificate verification is enabled by default, and verification is disabled only when upstream.tls.verify is false. Category 6: No issues found; no shared-resource mutation changed. Category 7: No issues found; the code consumes the existing proxy environment matcher and adds no unresolved $env:// or $secret:// references. The changed code sends Proxy-Authorization only through the CONNECT tunnel and does not persist it. The changed tests use local, non-production credentials.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

Major coverage gap: the E2E suite does not verify a successful plain ws:// connection through an HTTP proxy. The implementation has separate ws/wss selection and tunnel paths (realtime.rs:200-219, upstream_dial.rs:41-54). The successful case uses wss:// and HTTPS_PROXY; the ws:// case is under NO_PROXY, while the only HTTP_PROXY case uses SOCKS and expects failure (realtime-env-proxy-e2e.test.ts:217-223, 287-293, 315-327, 385-390). A regression in HTTP_PROXY selection or HTTP CONNECT for plain WebSockets would pass. The ALL_PROXY fallback is also not covered.

Resolution

Add an independent E2E case with a ws:// upstream outside NO_PROXY, an authenticated HTTP CONNECT proxy in HTTP_PROXY, and assertions for response.done, CONNECT target, credentials, and upstream handshake. Add an ALL_PROXY-only case to verify fallback selection. Keep the existing SOCKS and NO_PROXY cases.
