Type of change:

  • Bugfix
  • Backport patches
  • Documentation
  • CI/CD or Tests

What this PR does / why we need it:

Full ADC synchronization and empty-configuration cleanup currently omit an ownership selector, so resources created outside the controller can be deleted. Adapt the ownership fix from apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2906 to this repository's shared ADC client.

Build sync arguments per resolved backend and add manager-by: apisix-ingress-controller for every backend except apisix-standalone. Preserve the existing k8s/resource-key constraint for per-resource operations, leave standalone behavior unchanged, and use a shared LabelManagedByValue constant for resource labeling and synchronization. Both the regular and global-rule synchronization branches use the same argument builder.

Document legacy unlabeled resources and the remaining boundaries: global rules and plugin metadata are not label-filtered by ADC, nested routes follow Service ownership, and the manager label does not isolate multiple controller installations, or separate GatewayProxies that point to the same Admin API endpoint or gateway group.

Validation:

  • Added 32 HTTP-request regression cases covering explicit/default backend selection, full sync, per-resource sync, empty cleanup, and the global-rule branch, for APISIX, API7, an unrecognized backend, and standalone. The 24 non-standalone cases fail on the pre-fix client; all 32 pass with the fix.
  • go test -race ./internal/adc/... ./internal/controller/label ./internal/provider/apisix ./internal/provider/api7ee passed.
  • Ported the APISIX e2e case for preserving an external Service/Route through Ingress creation, update, and IngressClass deletion.
  • go test ./test/e2e/apisix -run '^$' passed (compile check only). Kubernetes e2e and a live API7 backend were not run locally.

Retry and e2e convergence fixes

Also synchronize the retry and PluginConfig e2e fixes from apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2906. The retrier, its virtual-clock regression tests, and the PluginConfig test file are byte-for-byte identical between the two PR branches.

Event-triggered failures no longer postpone a pending retry or advance backoff repeatedly before that retry fires. Reset clears stale notifications, and canceled callbacks cannot publish a retry. Every PluginConfig case checks status and headers together in one retried request. The two ApisixRoute secretRef cases and the ApisixUpstream health check had the same pattern and now retry their checks the same way.

Validation: race tests for the shared provider utilities and both APISIX/API7 providers passed. APISIX and API7 e2e suites passed compilation checks; full e2e execution is left to CI.

Pre-submission checklist:

  • Did you explain what problem does this PR solve? Or what new features have been added?
  • Have you added corresponding test cases?
  • Have you modified the corresponding document?
  • Is this PR backward compatible? Existing controller-labeled resources remain reconciled. Unlabeled orphan cleanup is documented.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved resource reconciliation for APISIX and API7 Enterprise: externally created, unlabeled resources are preserved, while controller-managed resources can be updated and cleaned up according to the desired configuration. Matching controller-generated IDs may still be overwritten.
    • Clarified that ownership labels do not isolate separate controller installations sharing a gateway. Global rules and plugin metadata remain subject to full reconciliation; APISIX standalone behavior differs.
    • Prevented repeated retry requests from postponing a pending retry. Resetting retries now clears pending notifications and restores the base delay.
  • Documentation
    • Added an FAQ entry covering resource ownership, reconciliation, and the limits of label-based isolation.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds managed-by labels to ADC sync arguments for non-standalone backends, changes retry timer handling, and updates resource-ownership documentation and end-to-end checks. It also changes plugin-config end-to-end assertions to use RequestAssert.

Changes: Managed resource ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend-specific sync selectors
internal/controller/label/label.go, internal/adc/client/client.go, internal/adc/client/ownership_test.go
Sync arguments add the managed-by label for non-standalone backends without changing task labels. Tests cover selectors across backends and operation types.
Resource isolation validation and scope
test/e2e/apisix/managed_resources.go, docs/en/latest/FAQ.md
The end-to-end test checks managed and external route behavior during updates and deletion. The FAQ describes resource selection and reconciliation behavior, including isolation limits.

Retry scheduling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry deadlines and reset behavior
internal/provider/common/retrier.go, internal/provider/common/retrier_test.go
Next preserves an active retry deadline and avoids advancing backoff while a retry is pending. Reset clears a pending notification. Tests cover both behaviors.

Plugin configuration response assertions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plugin-config response checks
test/e2e/crds/v2/pluginconfig.go
Tests use RequestAssert to check statuses and headers for basic use, deletion, updates, disabled plugins, route overrides, cross-namespace references, and SecretRef.

Explanation

Category 6 — HIGH: the pull request still permits cross-GatewayProxy deletion on shared targets. internal/adc/client/client.go:393-405 adds the fixed selector manager-by=apisix-ingress-controller to every non-standalone sync, and internal/adc/client/executor.go:54-64 passes it to ADC. GatewayProxy configs remain independently named by object identity (internal/adc/translator/gatewayproxy.go:52-55), but they do not receive distinct ownership labels or selectors. Therefore, two GatewayProxies that share an Admin API endpoint or gateway group select the same controller-managed resources; a full or cleanup sync from one can delete resources created by the other. The new FAQ at docs/en/latest/FAQ.md:70-73 confirms this behavior. No issues found in categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 in the changed paths.

Resolution

Use a unique ownership scope per controller installation or GatewayProxy. Add that scope to generated resource labels and ADC selectors. Reject or coordinate GatewayProxies that share an Admin API endpoint or gateway group. Before deletion, verify ownership and dependents. Apply equivalent isolation or explicit conflict handling to global rules and plugin metadata.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

Blocking error-handling defect remains in the added ADC ownership test. At internal/adc/client/ownership_test.go:49-53, a JSON decode failure calls t.Error but execution continues and sends the invalid request. The json.Encoder.Encode return value is discarded. This violates the requirement to handle applicable errors. The added APISIX E2E test provides relevant real-service coverage, but it does not resolve this defect.

Resolution

Return immediately after the request-body decode fails. Check the json.Encoder.Encode result, report the error with t.Errorf or require.NoError, and return after an encode failure. Keep the existing ownership assertions and APISIX E2E coverage.

Assert preservation of the external Service

assertExternal checks only the external Route's metadata. The other requests use /get and /anything, so they do not exercise /external. A synchronization regression that deletes external-service can therefore pass this test while leaving the Route's service_id unresolved. Add a Service existence check to assertExternal.

Suggested fix

 			admin.GET("/apisix/admin/routes/"+externalID).
 				WithHeader("X-API-KEY", s.AdminKey()).Expect().Status(http.StatusOK).
 				JSON().Object().Value("value").Object().Value("uri").IsEqual("/external")

Check that the second retry does not fire early.

This test accepts a notification sent at any point during the 20-second sleep. An early retry would therefore pass the backoff assertion. Check that the channel is empty immediately before the deadline, then advance the remaining time and check for the notification. (go.dev)

Update the retry timing assertion around time.Sleep and synctest.Wait to verify
the notification channel is empty immediately before the retry deadline, then
advance the remaining time and assert the notification arrives. Use the existing
channel and deadline setup, and ensure an early second retry fails the test.

Only the apisix and api7ee backends were scoped, so any other backend
type would still sync without the ownership selector. Scope everything
except apisix-standalone, and document that GatewayProxies sharing one
Admin API endpoint or gateway group are not isolated from each other.
Fail the backoff test if the second retry fires before its delay, and
check that the externally managed Service survives synchronization along
with its Route.
Each PluginConfig case waited for one successful request and then
asserted headers on a separate request that was not retried. On
APISIX standalone that second request can reach a worker still serving
the previous configuration and get a 404. Check the status and headers
together in one retried request, as the update case already does.
Two ApisixRoute secretRef cases checked the body on a separate request
after waiting for one success, and the ApisixUpstream health check sent
100 unretried requests right after the upstream appeared. On APISIX
standalone a worker still serving the previous configuration answers
404. Check status, headers and body in one retried request, and retry
the health check round until all 100 requests succeed.
