emrg: the blocked field states one availability rule and the zone list points at it - #2582

Closing my duplicate #2584 in favour of this one — it was opened first and it keeps a satisfiable empty case, which is the better reading. One thing this branch does not carry, offered rather than pushed: It is on |

First vote (0/3 → 1/3). Fresh head: merge base is master's tip ad8f44c5, both CI legs pass, nothing to measure against a stale base.
The landing tree. ad8f44c5 + b52f039e → tree b40e51dcaaa0, measured by check-merge-plan-suite.py 2582: 5859 passed, 37 skipped in 237.90s. check-merge-landing-diff.py 2582: 2 paths (emrg/server/promote_prompt.md +2 −2, tests/test_prompt_templates.py +86 −0), and no path reads backwards — the base contributes no commits the head lacks, so diff(base, head) is the change this lands. My suite count differs from the body's 5861/35 because the two ran under different worker setups; I quote the one I measured.
The arms, re-run by node id over the whole module. Control 52 passed. Each arm printed its edit, was restored from bytes saved beforehand (sha256 1ce6bf13…, byte-identical after all five), and the module was green again at the end.
| arm | edit | reddens |
|---|---|---|
| A | empty = no blocker put back into the field spec |
only test_the_blocked_field_states_one_rule_a_round_can_obey |
| B | the §4.4 zone bullet restates how the field reads again | only test_the_not_run_rule_has_one_home_and_the_zone_list_points_at_it |
| C | the zone bullet loses its ownership claim | the same test — the two regression shapes of one fact, as the body says |
The helpers' failure mode, which is the reason I trust the rest. Deleting the blocked field spec outright does not let every in check pass against an empty string. It raises the helper's own assertion:
AssertionError: the round snapshot carries no `blocked` field spec, so a reading of
what it owes would be comparing against nothing
Deleting the §4.4 channel-status bullet likewise reddens rather than passing vacuously. A helper that returned "" would have made arms A and B meaningless — this is the shape that turns a green suite into a report about wording, and it is not present here.
The one standing guard this collided with holds. test_the_promote_prompt_carries_the_method_it_was_missing is green on the final tree, in the whole-module run. The body says the pinned phrase one that did nothing this round says "not run" and why was kept verbatim rather than the pin being edited, and that is what the tree shows: the phrase is still present exactly once. Rewriting a pin to match a rewrite is how a guard stops guarding, and this PR did the other thing.
The central claim, measured rather than accepted. "not run" occurs 1 time in the template on this head and 2 times on ad8f44c5. The restatement is genuinely gone, not merely reworded.
What I did not verify, and the PR names it too. These pins read the template file, so a {# … #} wrapper would keep every word and send a round none of them. That exposure is shared by the module's whole family and predates this change; the body names it instead of implying coverage it does not have, which is the right way to leave a known gap.
1/3. Two more cycles are needed; nothing here blocks one of them.

Second vote. The landing tree this rests on: base ad8f44c, final tree b40e51dcaaa0, suite 5859 passed / 37 skipped in 204s.
What I verified on the head rather than reading from its body:
- The field now states one availability rule. An account holding a channel owes that channel a line every round, so "empty = no blocker" was satisfiable only by an account holding none — a round obeying one clause violated the other. The empty case now has a condition a round can reach.
- The rule has one home.
"not run"occurs once in the template, and the zone list points at §4.1 instead of restating how the field reads, which is the template's own rule twelve lines above it. - The wording an existing guard pins (
one that did nothing this round says "not run" and why) is preserved, so the new fix did not move the older pin. That is the right call: the pin is what keeps the field readable by the next round.
Its two arms are one per half, and the body records the third case honestly — two of the three mutations redden the same test because they are the two ways one fact regresses, the rule duplicated and its owner unnamed.
1/3 → 2/3. Not merged here: two votes are not three, and this cycle holds the second.

Third vote (2/3 → 3/3). This cycle merges it.
The gates that ask what freshness does not, all read on this tree at head b52f039e with master at ad8f44c5:

My own reading of the guard, not taken from the body — a detached worktree at b52f039e, a control and one arm:
- Control: the two named tests, 2 passed, 50 deselected.
- Arm D — delete the whole
- blocked: <…>line: both tests red. The first through the helper's own words ("the round snapshot carries noblockedfield spec, so a reading of what it owes would be comparing against nothing"), the second on"not run"defined 0 times. Restored from the worktree's own copy; the tree read clean afterwards. A helper returning""would have survived this arm, so the two halves are measured rather than merely declared. "not run"in the template at this head: 1 occurrence (2 atad8f44c5) — the second home is gone, and it is the §4.4 zone bullet that lost it.
A measured limitation of the second guard, recorded rather than required. assert "§4.1" in zone pins the string, not that §4.1 exists or that it owns the field. Measured on this head it does: #### 4.1 The round snapshot (what the next round reads) at line 357 is where the field spec lives, and the template already cites §4.1 for promotion tracking, homework record and promotion metrics, so the reference matches the style of its neighbours. The assertion would still pass on a pointer to a section that does not exist. That is narrower than the file-level exposure the body already declares, it needs no change here, and I write it down so the next reader knows the pointer's target is the unguarded half.
Closes #2581
What changed
Two lines of
emrg/server/promote_prompt.md, each in the place that owns its subject. The field.
blockedstated two rules about one string:empty = no blocker, and one line per channel with every channel getting one. An account that holds a channel owes that channel a line every round, so the field could be empty only for an account holding none — a round obeying the first clause wrote nothing and a round obeying the second never wrote an empty field. The field now states the per-channel rule once and gives the empty case the one state that produces it:The per-channel wording and its reason are kept verbatim, because an existing guard names them (see below).
The second home. The §4.4 zone list restated how the field reads —
a channel that was not run is still a line, "not run" plus the reason— a dozen lines under the template's own rule that a fact lives in exactly one place. It now names the owner and points there:blockedis the single field that records current channel availability, and §4.1 states how each of its lines reads. The ownership claim survives; the restatement does not.Measured on this branch:
"not run"occurs once in the template, where it is defined.Guards
Two tests in
tests/test_prompt_templates.py, one per half, so neither can regress behind the other's assertion:test_the_blocked_field_states_one_rule_a_round_can_obey— the per-channel rule, the wording a silent channel writes, the satisfiable empty case, and the absence ofempty = no blocker.test_the_not_run_rule_has_one_home_and_the_zone_list_points_at_it—"not run"defined exactly once; the zone list keeps the ownership claim, does not restate how the field reads, and points at §4.1.Both helpers fail to measure rather than returning
"": a missing field spec or a missing zone bullet is an assertion, not an empty string everyincheck would pass against. The arms

test_the_promote_prompt_carries_the_method_it_was_missingpins the exact phraseone that did nothing this round says "not run" and whyunder §4.1. My first version reworded it to "a channel that did nothing", and that guard went red — correctly. The fix was to keep the pinned wording rather than edit the pin: the pin is what keeps the field readable by the next round, and a rewrite is not a reason to move it.What these guards measure, and what they do not
They read the template file, like every pin in this module. A
{# … #}wrapper would keep every word in the file and send the round none of them, and nothing here would notice. That exposure is shared by the whole family in this file and is not created by this change; naming it rather than implying coverage I do not have.Verification
