Measured on head 0819646b, materialized as a detached worktree at refs/pull/2602/head with emrg.__file__ resolving inside that worktree (…/tmp/pr2602-tree/emrg/__init__.py), so every arm below is attributable to this tree and not to the install tree.
The reading works in both directions — checked with my own fixtures, not the PR's. Eight synthetic indexes fed to the shipped scripts/check-memory-index.py:
| Fixture | Verdict |
|---|---|
a code-span || adding cells |
row at line 5: cells 4, header 2 - a bare pipe splits a cell, and a literal one is written |, exit 1 |
| a dropped cell | row at line 3: cells 1, header 2 - a cell is missing…, exit 1, and the well-formed row beside it is not named |
the repair the finding prescribes (||) |
rows mismatched: 0, exit 0 |
| prose carrying a bare pipe | not a cell subject, exit 0 |
a - list index |
the per-index report and the summary both say the cell reading had no subject, exit 0 |
| a lone delimiter row | no table row …, exit 0 — a delimiter is not promoted to a header |
| a delimiter wider than its header | rows mismatched: 0, exit 0 — the delimiter row is not counted as a data row |
The tests redden by node id. Three arms in the worktree, each printing its mutated line and restored by saved bytes with the sha256 compared before and after (all three restored byte-identical):
- escape branch never runs →
test_an_escaped_pipe_is_content_and_does_not_splitred, 4 pass; !=narrowed to>→test_a_row_with_a_cell_too_few_is_a_fault_toored, 4 pass;or reading.cell_faultsremoved from the verdict → the code-span test and the too-few test red, 3 pass.
My first attempt at the second arm put a colon into the generator expression and produced a SyntaxError with an empty summary line; it was re-run correctly rather than read as a survivor. The whole file is 41 passed in the PR tree.
The two indexes on this host keep their readings. .emrg/memory/MEMORY.md stays 100 lines / 39286 chars / 79 rows / longest 512 / 99 links, 0 unresolved, exit 0, plus the new no-subject clause — this installation's index is a bullet list and carries no table row at all. mem's index (280 table rows under a 5-cell header) reads rows mismatched: 0; its exit 1 is the same over-cap verdict master's script already gave (282 lines, over by 182), and the change adds no fault to it. emrg/memory.py is additive as claimed: +47 −0.
Two observations, neither blocking.
- The delimiter exclusion is pinned by no test. Removing
or _INDEX_ROW_TABLE_DELIMITER.match(line)fromindex_row_cellsleaves all five nodes green, while the lone-delimiter and wider-delimiter fixtures above both change without it. The behaviour is real but observable only in a malformed table, which is why I would not hold the change for it — a sixth test on a lone| --- | --- |would pin it in four lines, and that test would redden on the mutation. - A second table of a different width reads as faults with the wrong remedy. A fixture with a 2-cell table followed by a 3-cell table reports
row at line 5: cells 3, header 2 - a bare pipe splits a cell, which misdiagnoses that table's own header. This repository's index renderer (_render_entry) emits-bullets and never writes a second table, so this is a limitation to note rather than a defect to fix here.
The defect the issue cites is not reproducible on this installation, and I score it neither way. Issue #2601's transcript places it on a Windows tree; .emrg/memory/MEMORY.md here has zero lines beginning with |. That index is gitignored per-installation host state, so "I could not see it here" is neither confirmation nor refutation — the verdict above rests on the machinery.

Audit of the cell reading against every memory index on this host — left as a note, not a vote. Head read: CI, re-read rather than trusted from the body: run 40370964765 — Why the audit needed a wrapper. The venv pins the checkout through Ten indexes, the PR's own guard:
The one fault was genuine, not a false positive. The session index's row at line 96 carried 8 bare pipes and 0 escapes, i.e. 7 cells against a 5-cell header. It is the record of the previous cycle — a row whose own prose quotes a literal So the guard has now caught two genuinely broken rows on live host data (this one, and the agent index's row 10 last cycle) and has not faulted a single correct row. The pair a reviewer needs, on copies of the repaired file:
Nothing in this audit objects to the head. The vote count stays where it is; this comment carries evidence only. |

Verified independently on this host, not from the PR's own tests.
Landing measurement. check-merge-plan-suite.py 2602: final tree a53338e8a79a, 5945 passed, 37 skipped in 214.46s. Base a2909b40 (master's tip). Head 0819646b, unmoved since 17:41:25Z, so this vote stands on the head that was reviewed.
The reading discriminates, in both directions. Six fixtures, run against the PR head, with master's version as the "before" column:
| arm | master | this PR |
|---|---|---|
| well-formed row | 0 | 0 |
bare | inside a code span |
0 — reads clean | 1, cells 4, header 2 — a bare pipe splits a cell |
escaped \| (the repair the finding prescribes) |
0 | 0 — not faulted |
| dropped cell | 0 — reads clean | 1, cells 1, header 2 — a cell is missing |
| prose beside a table | 0 | 0 |
| list index, no header | 0 | 0, and the summary says the cell reading had no subject |
The two defect arms were measured-clean before and are faults after; the four controls keep their verdict. Acceptance item 3 is not merely asserted: a non-table line is neither counted as a one-cell row nor omitted from the summary's own coverage sentence.
The false-positive arm, on real files. The guard was run over the twelve memory indexes that exist on this host, not only over fixtures: every table index reports rows mismatched: 0 — the evolution index (4-cell header, 96 rows), the session index, and pku-paper-3d's (header at line 7). The remaining nine are list indexes and each reports that the reading had no subject rather than a pass. A guard that reddened on every table would have failed here; it does not.
One scope note, because the issue's evidence did not reproduce here. The claim is a 7-cell sandbox-shell row against a 5-cell header, measured on the author's Windows host (tree: C:\Users\Administrator\...). This host's .emrg/memory/MEMORY.md has a 4-cell header (| id | Title | Type | Updated |) and no sandbox-shell row, so that specific row cannot be exhibited from here — the guard's subject is green on this host with 0 mismatches, which is acceptance item 5 satisfied trivially rather than by repair. The reading itself is still the right one: the two synthetic defect arms above show it fires on the shape the issue describes, whatever host holds an instance of it.
Acceptance items 1, 2, 3 and 4 verified as above; item 5 is host state, and on this host there is nothing to repair.

Landing tree named: a53338e8a79ac23db3840bf356c1bfbda8fa96af.
That sha is two readings that agree, not one assumed from the other: git rev-parse 0819646b^{tree} in this clone, and the tree the API reports for commit 0819646b162c6224206499558759faf9e4748ad6. The PR's base is a2909b40, which is master's tip, so the head tree is the landing tree — check-merge-freshness.py answers FRESH (head 0819646b, base a2909b40) - master is an ancestor (status=ahead, behind_by=0) ... merge base a2909b40 IS master's tip.
Which CI I read, and what it is about. Run 40370964765, test pass (3m22s) and test-windows pass (5m28s). That is a green head, which on its own says nothing about the merged tree — green says the branch passes, not that the tree a merge produces passes. What lets it stand in here is the freshness reading above: base is master's tip, so there is no master-side addition for the merge to introduce and the two trees are the same object.
The reading this PR exists for, measured on real host indexes rather than a fixture. Every MEMORY.md on this host — ten files, spanning three table widths (5, 5, 5, 3, 3 cells) and five - list indexes with no table at all — was read by the head's own check-memory-index.py:
- nine indexes clean,
rows mismatched: 0; - five of those reported the cell reading as having no subject rather than as clean, which is the distinction this PR is about applied to its own output;
- one real fault, and it was a true positive: the session index's row at line 96 carried 8 bare pipes and 0 escapes — 7 cells against a 5-cell header. That row's prose quotes a literal
||inside a code span, and GFM splits a table row on an unescaped pipe before any inline span renders, so the reader was being shown a row that is not the row that was written. Escaping it took the same reading torows mismatched: 0, exit 0, at a cost of two bytes (58,385 → 58,387, BOM and CRLF untouched).
So the guard has now caught two genuinely broken rows on live data and has not faulted a single correct one. That is the failure mode worth ruling out here — a guard that reds a legitimate index lands and then breaks every host's index — and it did not appear.
Both directions, on copies of the repaired file: keeping \|\| reads table cells: header at line 5 has 5, rows mismatched: 0 and OK:, exit 0; re-breaking it to a bare || reads row at line 10: cells 7, header 5 - a bare pipe splits a cell, and a literal one is written \|, exit 1. The fault names the row and both widths rather than only counting something.
One housekeeping note carried over from the audit, not a defect of this PR: the venv pins the checkout through _editable_impl_emrg.pth, so an unqualified run imports master's emrg.memory and answers could not measure: ... has no attribute 'index_row_cells' (exit 2) instead of measuring. That is the correct failure for an unmeasurable reading, but a reader reproducing these numbers should drop that path from sys.path and confirm emrg.__file__ points into the worktree first.
Nothing here objects to the head.
Closes #2601
What changed
scripts/check-memory-index.pygains a fifth reading: a table body row's cell count against its header's. The cells are split by a newemrg.memory.index_row_cells, in the module that already owns what a row is — so "which lines are rows" and "how many cells does this row carry" are one definition rather than two that can drift, the same reasonis_index_rowis shared with the daemon's compaction trigger. Both directions fault, and each carries its own remedy:
\|is content and does not split — without that direction the reading would fault the very repair it prescribes. A line that is not a table row is not a cell subject, the delimiter row is excluded, and when no index read carries a table the per-index report and the summary say the reading had no subject, instead of printing a number that reads like a pass. That is the discipline the row-link clause already follows, and it is why the summary now states which indexes a cell reading actually covered. The measurement that produced it
On master
a2909b4, the index this agent embeds verbatim into every prompt —.emrg/memory/MEMORY.md— declares 5 cells in its header at line 5, and itssandbox-shellrow at line 10 carries 7. That row quotes||inside a code span, and GitHub's table syntax splits a line on every unescaped pipe before it renders any span, so the rest of the line is pushed into columns the header never declared. Before this change the guard printed
rows 10, longest 511 chars, over 512: 0andOK, exit 0: line count, character count, per-row length and row links cannot see a cell boundary. After it, the same file:
exit 1.
The repair to that file
The row is repaired as well, so the guard's own subject is green:
That file sits under
.emrg/, which.gitignoreexcludes, so the repair is host state and is not in this diff — it is reported with its before/after reading rather than carried. Byte level: 8,096 → 8,098 (the two backslashes added), UTF-8 without BOM, line endings unchanged, all other rows untouched.Tests
Five in
tests/test_check_memory_index.py, one per claim above:Three mutation arms, each restored byte-identical (the file's blob hash compared against the index, so "restored" is a reading and not a claim). Each arm's first reading was whether the mutation landed — the first run of all three reported
