fork/consolidated now contains upstream main through 19813544 (16 C and C++ resolution fixes). C++ calls through iterators, subscripts, front()/back()/at(), macro-defined methods, explicit specializations and overloaded free functions now link to the method C++ calls, and a C call reaches the function its own file can see. On nlohmann/json this drops 940 call links that all pointed, wrongly, at one test file's using json alias.

The fork resolves references in the Rust kernel, so upstream's TypeScript resolver files stay deleted (name-matcher.ts, cpp-includers.ts, cpp-macro-visibility.ts, cpp-namespaces.ts, cpp-type-aliases.ts, and the new c-feature-variants.ts). Their upstream versions were the specification for the native ports below. Extraction follows upstream as written: c-cpp.ts, cpp-brace-scopes.ts, the new cpp-macro-methods.ts, and the parse-worker and tree-sitter changes. The kernel's C++ naming takes upstream's explicit-specialization names (ccpp/names.rs).

Upstream PRs

Conflicts. Eight files conflicted:

  • The deleted resolver files stay deleted.
  • src/index.ts keeps the fork's version.
  • The synthesizer imports cppSpecializationArguments from the new src/resolution/cpp-specializations.ts.
  • ccpp/names.rs takes upstream's naming.
  • CHANGELOG.md was rebuilt with scripts/changelog-reconcile.mjs.

Verification, on this head (d2905a86 code; f494cb6a adds only README and CHANGELOG)

  • Upstream's 16 new test files and the other C/C++ test files: 67 of 67 files, 617 of 617 tests.
  • Full suite: 742 files, 9,221 tests pass (39 skipped). stderr has no Native stack trace and no Worker exited unexpectedly.
  • npx tsc, npm run check:agent-docs (AGENTS.md 12,800 of 32,768 bytes) and cargo clippy --release --lib -- -D warnings are clean.
  • Golden dumps: UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 rewrote no .dump file (8 of 8 pass, no diff).
  • Precision gate (eval:precision), base a5f14290 against this head:
Corpus Edges before Edges after Change Graded cases
jq (C) 7,784 7,784 identical none graded
nlohmann/json (C++) 29,428 28,803 −625 (−2.1%) absent 11/11, present 7/7 held

The json call edges changed in three ways:

  • Lost: 973. 940 went to the using json alias in tests/src/fuzzer-parse_bjdata.cpp, which every test file's json call reached by name, and 23 to a test helper test in unit-noexcept.cpp. Both are wrong cross-file guesses.
  • Gained: 431. Of these, 377 are instance-method calls that the iterator, element and overload ports now type.
  • Retargeted: 66.

CHANGELOG. All of upstream's bullets are kept. Three fork changes:

  • The older copy of the C++ -> entry, which upstream's expanded entry replaces, is dropped. The fork's existing "left unlinked" wording for a class derived from a decltype(…) is kept.
  • The string-literal entry is dropped again, as at the last merge, because the fork already behaved that way.
  • One fork entry is added for the calls the native resolver leaves unlinked where upstream matches by name alone.

README rows checked:

  • The merge point is changed to 19813544.
  • "Name resolution" is still accurate.
  • The C++ typedef/using aliases row is unchanged.
  • The C++ -> smart-pointer row is unchanged.
  • The C++ auto local / chained call / data member row now also names an iterator's element and a map's key or value that a class template writes.
  • The C++ namespace aliases include-closure row is still accurate: the alias port reads only files in the caller's include closure.
  • The C++ object-creation row is unchanged.
  • "What the fork adds", "Measured results" and "What it costs" are unchanged.

Not covered.

Summary by cubic

Merges upstream main through 19813544, porting 16 C/C++ resolution fixes to the fork's native Rust kernel. Upstream's TypeScript resolver files stay deleted; their behavior is reimplemented natively.

C++ calls through iterators, subscripts, container accessors, macro-defined methods, explicit specializations, and overloaded free functions now link where C++ resolves them; a C call reaches the function its own file can see. On nlohmann/json the net effect is −625 call edges (−2.1%): 940 wrong links to one test file's using json alias are gone, replaced by 377 instance-method calls that now type.

Resolver changes

  • -> on a container iterator or auto iterator, dereferences, map first/second, and element subscripts read the element's class; front()/back()/at()/top()/get()/value() name what the container holds. A map's value_type is its pair, so a call on it stays unlinked rather than reaching the key's method.
  • Explicit specializations are named after their template; a call's template arguments pick among them, and a class's own member template ends the lookup.
  • Free-function overloads now pick by argument count and type, including const-twin fits.
  • Macro-defined methods get nodes where invoked, with signature read from the expansion and default arguments their class declares inside a namespace.
  • C calls prefer the file's own function, then an included header's; a header definition compiled only by an unset flag yields to the compiled source. Standard headers never match by path tail.

Verification

  • 9,221 tests pass (39 skipped); tsc, clippy, and agent-docs clean; golden dumps unchanged.
  • Precision gate holds all graded cases: jq identical, nlohmann/json −625 edges with 18/18 graded cases held.
  • Conflicted files resolved as planned: upstream's deleted resolver files stay deleted, extraction merges as written, ccpp/names.rs takes upstream's naming, CHANGELOG rebuilt.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • C and C++ call links now better handle overloads, aliases, explicit template specializations, macro-defined methods, and visibility across source files.
    • C++ calls through containers, iterators, pointers, arrays, and accessor results resolve more accurately when their types can be determined. Ambiguous or unreadable types remain unlinked.
    • C call resolution better accounts for build flags and conditional compilation when selecting definitions.
  • Documentation

    • Updated resolution notes for C++, Go, and map key/value types.

…hares its last name, and rocksdb::DB is RocksDB's own (colbymchenry#2567)

A C++ receiver declared with a namespace-qualified type is from outside
the project only when no class of the project can be what that name names.
Three cases read that wrong on main:

- A namespace a macro stands for. RocksDB declares its classes in
  `namespace ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE` under `#define ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE rocksdb`,
  so the index names them `ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::DB`, and colbymchenry#2532's outside rule
  (cppProjectScopeNames) never saw `rocksdb`: `rocksdb::DB* db; db->Put(…)`
  got no edge. cppProjectScopeNames now adds the name a single-name macro
  stands for, in both directions (cppNameMacros, the map
  cppNamespaceMacros already builds).
- A lowercase outside type beside a project namesake. isCppLibraryType
  (colbymchenry#2413) took a non-std lowercase type as the library's only when no
  project type had its name at all, so `absl::flat_hash_set<int> seen;
  seen.insert(…)` reached a project's own `util::flat_hash_set::insert`.
  It is now also the library's when every project type of that name is a
  namesake (cppFindsOnlyNamesakes).
- A capitalized type whose last name finds only namesakes, on the paths
  colbymchenry#2493's call-site rules leave to the last-name match: a declaration read
  outside the calling function (protobuf's `absl::Status _status` in its
  RETURN_IF_ERROR macro body reached `upb::Status::ok`; `auto bytes =
  ::hpb::Serialize(…); bytes.value()` reached `hpb::StatusOr::value`), and
  a namespace the project uses (its generated
  `DescriptorProto::ExtensionRange`, which the index doesn't hold, reached
  `Descriptor::ExtensionRange::options`). That call now gets no edge, as
  isUndeclaredTypeName rules where no class shares the name; `->` on a
  value still goes to the name strategies, and a template parameter's
  member is left alone.

cppFindsOnlyNamesakes: every type of the last name, and every owner of a
method of the called name (the index can hold a class's methods without
the class), has a qualified name that ends unlike the written one, neither
the other's tail; namespace aliases are expanded and macro-named
namespaces read both ways. A name a project type qualifies, an unqualified
name and an unbalanced `<>` are never judged.

… global type (colbymchenry#2568)

protobuf's hpb declares `class Arena { … backend::Arena arena_; }`, where
`namespace backend = hpb::internal::backend::upb;` and that namespace says
`using Arena = ::upb::Arena;`. cppTypeName dropped the leading `::`, so the
alias's target was looked up as `upb::Arena` from the alias's own scope,
whose nearest `upb` is that very namespace: the alias named itself, the
lookup ended on no class, and `arena_.Fuse(other.arena_)` fell back to the
type's last name, linking `hpb::Arena::Fuse` (and `IsFused`, `RefArena`) to
itself instead of `upb::Arena::Fuse`.

TypeName now records a leading `::` (`global`), and a global name is looked
up from the global scope alone: when an alias's target is followed (follow,
and the scope expand looks the target up from and hands on), in a class's
base clause (baseClassesOf), and in cppAliasedTypeWritten, which colbymchenry#2532's
`auto` locals and chains walk alias by alias.

…there, and a far lowercase outside type reaches no namesake (colbymchenry#2569)

The two follow-ups colbymchenry#2567 and colbymchenry#2568 left open.

A receiver declared with a leading `::` lost it: the declarator regex
started a type at a letter, so `::upb::Arena& a` inside `namespace hpb`
was looked up from `hpb` and found a namespace-local `hpb::upb::Arena`.
The declared type now keeps a leading `::` where one can stand (not after
a name, a template's arguments or a `)`, so `SkipList<Key,
Comparator>::Iterator iter` is not read as `::Iterator`), and
resolveCppAliasedType no longer takes a function-local `using Foo = Bar;`
for `::Foo`.

A lowercase outside type declared outside the calling function still used
the last-name typed match: colbymchenry#2413's library rule skips such declarations,
and colbymchenry#2567's namesake gate took capitalized types only. So a far
`absl::flat_hash_set<int> seen` linked `seen.insert(v)` to the project's
`util::flat_hash_set::insert`, and a far `std::string text` linked
`text.clear()` to a global project `string` class. The gate now covers
lowercase types, which are decided as when no class shares their name,
and cppFindsOnlyNamesakes reads a `std::` name exactly.

… SkipList<Key, Comparator>::Iterator, is that template's member (colbymchenry#2573)

The declarator regex read a type as a name plus one template argument
list, so `SkipList<Key, Comparator>::Iterator iter(&list);` was read from
its last name alone and looked up from the calling function: leveldb's
skip-list tests linked `iter.Valid()` to `leveldb::Iterator::Valid`,
rocksdb's to `IteratorBase::Valid`, and rocksdb's SkipListRep iterators
linked their `iter_` member's calls (`InlineSkipList<…>::Iterator iter_;`)
to their own methods. The type is now read whole, `Outer<Args>::Member`,
and C++ lookup finds the member in the class template.

A library template's member read this way is a library type only as an
iterator (`std::vector<int>::iterator`, never a project class named
`iterator`). Others name another type that may be the project's
(`std::vector<Slice>::value_type`, gmock's `typename
std::tuple_element<N - 1, MatcherTuple>::type matcher`), so their calls go
on as before.

…ent's method (colbymchenry#2576)

`std::deque<Slice>::const_iterator it; it->data()` was matched by the
method's name alone, so it could reach any class with a `data`, and
`itr->c_str()` on a `std::vector<std::string>::const_iterator` reached
gtest's `FilePath::c_str`. A `->` on a value of an iterator type now
reaches the container's element, as `->` on a smart pointer reaches what it
holds: the element is read from the container's template arguments
(cppRangeElementOf), before the container's own `iterator` alias would
lose them (protobuf's `RepeatedPtrField<T>::iterator`), and looked up as
C++ does. A library element (`std::string`) or the caller's template
parameter calls no project method. An element only a class template's own
`begin()`/`operator*` writes with its parameter (googletest's
`ParamGenerator<T>::iterator`) goes on as before.

…s the element's method through `->` (colbymchenry#2579)

`auto it = logs_.begin(); it->IsSyncing()` had no type for `it`: a call
on a library container (`std::deque<LogWriterNumber>`) returned nothing
the auto-local reader could use, so `->` calls on it were matched by the
method's name. A standard or abseil container's `begin`/`end`/`find`/
`lower_bound`/`rbegin`/… now types as `<container>::iterator`, and a
standard search (`std::lower_bound`, `std::find_if`, `std::next`, …) as
the iterator it is given first; colbymchenry#2576's cppArrowTarget then reaches the
container's element.

The element is looked up where the container's type is written (the
`auto` local's declared site, a data member's class), not where the call
is: an element nested in another class (`vs->obsolete_files_.begin()`)
finds that class's type, not a namesake visible at the call. A holder's
type stays looked up at the call: from a pimpl member's header the lookup
finds a namesake (protobuf's other `DescriptorIndex`) or nothing.

…()`, calls the method of what it points at (colbymchenry#2598)

The extractor records `(*it)->Visit()` and `(*node).Weight()` by their
bare names, which the name strategies then gave to whichever class had a
method of that name (0.4-0.7 guesses), and a local a dereference sets,
`auto first = *nodes.begin()`, had no type.

`*x` and `x->` in C++ expression typing now dereference a container's
iterator to its element as well as pointers and holders (cppDereferenced,
used by cppExpressionType, cppMemberObject and cppChainInnerType), and a
bare-name call written on `(*name)` (read at the call's column, where the
receiver starts) is resolved on the dereferenced value's class by C++
lookup before the name strategies run: the method, or no project method
for a library type, a template parameter's, or a class that lacks it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…, `it->second.Flush()`, calls the value's method (colbymchenry#2601)

The extractor records `it->second.Flush()`, `kv.second.Flush()` and
`(*it).first.Print()` by their bare names, which the name strategies gave
to whichever class had a method of that name — 45 `std::string::c_str()`
calls went to googletest's `FilePath::c_str` — and a local such a member
initializes (`auto& v = it->second`) had no type.

`x.first` / `x.second` (and `->`) on a `std::pair` now type as the pair's
elements in C++ expression typing (cppPairMember), so a map's iterator,
range-for element or declared pair reaches its key and value, and colbymchenry#2598's
bare-name receiver reader also takes `name->second`, `name.first` and
`(*name).second`. A member typed by another class template's parameter
(`CoreLocalArray<T>::AccessElementAndIndex()`'s `std::pair<T*, size_t>`)
goes on as before: only the calling function's own template parameter
names no particular class.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ound()`, calls the element's method (colbymchenry#2602)

The extractor records a call on a subscripted receiver, like
`statuses[i].IsNotFound()`, `buffers[key].Flush()` or `iters[i]->Valid()`,
by its bare name, which went to whichever class had a method of that name,
and a local an element initializes (`auto& s = statuses[i]`) had no type.

- C++ expression typing reads a subscript: an array's element, what a
  pointer points at, a library map's mapped value, a sequence's element, or
  what a class's `operator[]` returns.
- Declarations record their array dimensions (locals, parameters and data
  members, also through an alias), so a subscript, `*arr`, `arr->` and a
  range-for over an array read the type the array is declared with.
- The bare-name receiver reader takes subscripts after a name or `(*name)`,
  reading the line with its literals blanked.
- Overload arguments use the same subscript typing: a map's `values[key]`
  is its value type, no longer a `std::pair`.

A/B vs main, every changed site triaged: leveldb 12 removed, 14 added,
1 retargeted, 11 metadata-only; fmt 6/4/10/2; redis identical; rocksdb

…OBUF_DEFINE_ACCESSOR(FieldDescriptor, number, int)`, is indexed where the macro is invoked (colbymchenry#2605)

protobuf declares its descriptor accessors in their classes and defines
them below with macros, like `PROTOBUF_DEFINE_ACCESSOR(FieldDescriptor,
number, int)`; its reflection pastes `Reflection::Get##TYPENAME` in
another. The parser never sees those definitions (the preParse blanks the
invocations) and a declaration mints no node, so the methods had none and
every call to them linked to nothing.

- After either extractor (the kernel or the wasm walker), a step over the
  original source expands the file's own function-like macros whose body
  defines `Class::method(...) ... {`, at each invocation at namespace
  scope, and mints a method node per definition: named and qualified like
  an out-of-line definition, contained by the file and the same-file
  class, with the expanded head as its signature. Constructors,
  destructors and variadic macros are left out.
- The parse worker leaves the raw kernel fast path only for a file that
  may define one (a cheap text test), so the step sees it.
- The C++ resolver reads such a method's return type and parameters from
  its signature, and never takes it for a deleted overload.

A/B vs main on the kernel path, every changed site triaged: leveldb and
redis identical; fmt +13 nodes and rocksdb +11 (gtest's TestEventRepeater
overrides); protobuf +257 nodes, 6,203 calls and 2 references added, 252
calls retargeted, 11 metadata-only, none removed. Kernel and wasm dumps
are byte-identical, protobuf's one pre-existing Swift line aside.

…::ReadPrimitive<int32_t, WireFormatLite::TYPE_INT32>`, is named after its template (colbymchenry#2609)

An explicit specialization of a function or member function template kept
its template arguments in its name: protobuf's `template <> bool
WireFormatLite::ReadPrimitive<int32_t, WireFormatLite::TYPE_INT32>(…)` was
named `TYPE_INT32>` and qualified `…::ReadPrimitive::TYPE_INT32>`, the
qualified id split at the `::` inside its arguments; rocksdb's `template <>
int64_t Deserialize<int64_t>(…)` was `Deserialize<int64_t>`. A call writes
the bare name, so nothing linked to them.

Both extractors (wasm and the native kernel) now name a specialization
after its template, from the template-id's own name, and take its receiver
from the text before the declarator's name. That text must end in a real
`::`: tree-sitter recovers Metal's `vertex VertexOut vertexShader(…)` with
a missing, zero-width one.

A specialization now meets its template among a name's candidates, so the
resolver chooses between them wherever it picks among C++ candidates (a
class's methods, the implicit-this walk and its bases, exact, qualified,
global, fuzzy and macro-namespace matching):
 - a call that writes template arguments reaches the specialization
   written with the same ones (spacing aside, or qualified further on one
   side), else the template itself or an ordinary overload, else nothing:
   fmt's `num_bits<unsigned short>()` stays on `num_bits<T>()` instead of
   the nearer `num_bits<uint128>()`; protobuf's `Arena::Create<T>` keeps
   calling `DefaultConstruct<T>`, not the tests' `DefaultConstruct<
   DispatcherTestProto>` hook; a dependent `ReadPrimitive<CType,
   DeclaredType>(…)` links nowhere rather than to the first specialization.
 - a call that writes none, or `<>`, reaches a specialization only when
   nothing else has the name.
 - a class's own member template, specialized but none for these
   arguments, ends the lookup there instead of falling to a base's
   namesake.
The `cpp-override` pass leaves specializations out on both sides: a member
template is never virtual.

Validated on the cgstd kit against main (f7951a1): leveldb and redis
byte-identical; fmt: 8 specializations renamed, every call target as on
main; rocksdb: the cassandra `Serialize<T>`/`Deserialize<T>` calls (25 in
format.cc, 75 in its tests, which main sent to `ColumnBase` methods) each
reach the specialization their argument names (100 of 100 agree);
protobuf: `MergeFrom<MessageLite>` (3 calls), `ReadPrimitive<int,
TYPE_ENUM>` (2) and a test's `ReadPackedPrimitive<uint32_t, TYPE_FIXED32>`
reach their specializations; 5 dependent calls like
`GetRepeatedFieldInternal<T>`, and one `MutableRepeatedFieldInternal<int>`
(the macro writes `<int32_t>`), no longer link to the first specialization
a macro defines. Kernel and wasm dumps identical (but for protobuf's known
Swift line). Full suite: 7179 passed, 0 failed.

…seWithLimit(limit, data, result)`, reaches the overload its arguments fit (colbymchenry#2612)

A C++ call to a function outside a class took whichever same-named
function the name strategies ranked first, by file and line proximity,
never by its arguments. Methods already picked their overload by argument
count, string literals and written argument types (cppOverloadFor);
functions never did. protobuf's `ParseWithLimit(limit, data, result)` on an
`int32_t result` reached the `int64_t&` overload beside the call, and
rocksdb's `NewLRUCache(cache_opts)` the overload taking a `size_t
capacity`.

Exact, qualified (global, exact, partial) and macro-namespace matching now
keep their choice of function, then let the call's arguments pick among its
overloads, the functions of its qualified name the call's file can see
(cppFunctionOverload, with cppOverloadFor's count-then-type fit; the
macro-namespace scorer breaks its ties by type). The choice stays on a tie.
- An overload only another source file sees (another `.cc` file's
  `static`, an unnamed namespace's) never competes. When the name strategy
  had picked such a function, which was then rejected, the call now links
  to the overload its file sees: leveldb's `GetLengthPrefixedSlice(&input,
  &key)` reached memtable.cc's static and linked nothing.
- A function hides a class of its name, so a call to a name both have
  reaches the function.
- Only C++ calls: protobuf's Rust FFI calls lost their `extern` targets to
  the C definitions when every language went through it.

Argument types read better too: a parameter named like the function it
belongs to, protobuf's `std::string u64(uint64_t u64)`, was read as the
function's own declarator, so `u64` looked like a `std::string`.

Validated on the cgstd kit against main (627018e), every changed site
classified by argument count against both targets, ~100 type-decided sites
read by hand:
- leveldb: 5 calls linked that linked nothing.
- fmt: 283 retargeted (139 to an overload that takes that many arguments,
  110 by type, 34 multi-line or defaulted); fmt's `fill_n(it, …)` on an
  iterator of unknown type now takes the `basic_appender` overload, right
  for fmt's usual iterator.
- rocksdb: 101 linked, 1118 retargeted (720 by count, 339 by type).
- protobuf: 29 linked, 941 retargeted (372 by count, 558 by type), e.g. the
  compiler helpers' `QualifiedClassName(enum_, …)` reaching the
  `EnumDescriptor*` overload and `Namespace(d->file())` no longer calling
  itself.
- redis (C): byte-identical.
Full suite: 7188 passed, 0 failed.

…wn file can see, past another file's `static` copy (colbymchenry#2613)

A C call now links to the function of its name the call's own file can see:
its own, or one a header it includes defines, else one with external
linkage, the best placed of them (cppFunctionOverload's C branch). Before,
the name strategies took the function nearest the call; when that was
another source file's `static`, isVisibleAcrossFiles dropped it and the
call was left unlinked, so no call reached redis's `server.c` `mstime()`
or `ustime()`.

- A source file's `static` function is visible to a file that `#include`s
  that source file: hiredis's async.c includes dict.c, redis's ae.c its
  event-loop backend.
- The coordinator's `resolveImport` hook falls back to matchByFilePath for
  a C/C++ `#include` the import resolver can't place, as resolveOneInner
  already does, so cppIncluders sees includes only the end of their path
  names: protobuf's `google/protobuf/descriptor.upb.h`, which two generated
  copies end in, and jemalloc's `jemalloc/internal/*.h`. Standard headers
  are left out: otherwise `#include <math.h>` makes jemalloc's
  test/math.h visible to its own include through isIncludedCppTestSuite.

A/B on the cgstd kit against main 4a591ae: leveldb, fmt and rocksdb
identical; redis +194 calls linked and 115 retargeted (114 to hiredis
alloc.h's POSIX `static inline`s, 1 known miss: lua-cjson's fpconv_init to
an inline only `#ifdef USE_INTERNAL_FPCONV` builds use); protobuf 412 upb
calls retargeted from the unincluded php-upb.h amalgamation to the headers
the calling file includes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…'s `#ifdef USE_INTERNAL_FPCONV` `fpconv_init`, gives way to the source file the build compiles (colbymchenry#2615)

lua-cjson's fpconv.h defines `static inline void fpconv_init()` only under
`#ifdef USE_INTERNAL_FPCONV` and otherwise declares it `extern` for fpconv.c
to define. Nothing in redis's tree sets the flag, so its build calls
fpconv.c's, but colbymchenry#2613's rule (the file's own or an included header's
definition first) took the header's.

c-feature-variants.ts decides whether a line is compiled only by a build
that sets a flag nothing sets. It reads the conditionals around the line
(cpp-macro-visibility's directiveLines, now exported): `#ifdef`/`#ifndef`,
and `#if` with defined, !, &&, ||, parentheses, integers and bare flags,
then `#elif` and `#else`. A flag is set nowhere when the line's own file
doesn't define it, no build file from the project root down to the
definition or the call names it, and no C/C++ file of their components
(the tree under the nearest directory with a build file) defines it.
Reserved and platform names stay unknown.

cppFunctionOverload's C branch then takes a non-static, non-variant
definition outside the file's tier when one exists, when every definition
the file sees is such a variant, and when the call itself is compiled by
the default build. A branch around both the definition and the call decides
nothing: redis's quicklist.c tests call their own `static mstime` inside
`#ifdef REDIS_TEST`.

A/B against main dc4ccf6: leveldb, fmt, rocksdb and protobuf identical;
redis 1 call retargeted, lua_cjson.c's fpconv_init() from fpconv.h to
fpconv.c. Indexing time within noise (redis 10.5-11.9 s on main, 10.2-12.3 s
here).

… holder's `get()`/`value()` returns, like rocksdb's `edits.back()->MarkAtomicGroup(…)`, calls the element's method (colbymchenry#2616)

A call on what a library container hands out linked to nothing: the
standard library's `front()` returns nothing the index can read, and the
library-receiver gate keeps the name strategies off a `std::vector`.

cppLibraryElementOf reads what such a member returns, where the
container's type is written:
- `front()`, `back()` and `at(i)` of a sequence (std/absl, and the project
  sequences cppRangeElementOf already treats as such) → its element;
- a library map's `at(key)` → the mapped value;
- `std::stack`/`std::priority_queue` `top()`, `std::queue` `front()`/`back()`
  → the element;
- `get()` of `std::unique_ptr`/`std::shared_ptr`/`absl::NoDestructor` → a
  pointer to the held type, `value()`/`value_or()` of an optional or an
  `absl::StatusOr` → the held type.
It is asked in cppChainInnerType (a chain `recv.front().m()`) and in
cppExpressionType (an `auto` local, a range, an argument), next to
cppLibraryIteratorOf.

A/B on the cgstd kit against main 98127e5: leveldb, fmt and redis
identical; rocksdb 299 calls added, 89 retargeted (overloads picked by a
typed `.get()` argument, like `test::PerThreadDBPath(env_.get(), …)`, and
inherited methods on a typed element), 10 removed (guesses on what turned
out to be library containers) and 56 confidence-only; protobuf 7 added and
16 retargeted (cast helpers off their `std::shared_ptr` overloads, `Add`
off a deleted one). Every site was joined with the element type an
instrumented arm logged.

…DynamicCastMessage(const MessageLite*)` and `DynamicCastMessage(MessageLite*)`, a call reaches the one C++ picks (colbymchenry#2618)

Overload fit by argument type (cppArgumentTypeChoice) scored a `const T*`
parameter and its `T*` twin alike, and the one declared first won: protobuf's
`DynamicCastMessage<T>(ptr.get())` on a `std::shared_ptr<Message>` took the
`const MessageLite*` overload.

- cppConstTwinChoice: of the best-fitting overload's twins, alike but for
  the `const` of a pointer or reference parameter, the one that adds `const`
  to the fewest arguments.
- cppWrittenTypeFit: a pointer or reference to a non-const type never takes
  a const object, nor a reference a value a call returns (cppNamesObject
  tells a named object from a call's result); an object is no pointer, nor a
  pointer to characters a pointer to another type (or the reverse). None of
  that for an argument of a template parameter's type, and the pointer and
  `const` rules not for a parameter the function's own template parameter
  types (it deduces the `const`).
- The argument's type keeps a `const` its declaration writes in front
  (`const Buffer* b`, `constexpr char key[]`), which the declarator regex
  leaves out; an array is a pointer to its element; `&ref` is a pointer to
  the referee; cppLibraryElementOf keeps a `const` in a holder's template
  argument (`std::shared_ptr<const Message>`).
- Template headers are read 8 lines up, not 3 (fmt's `join`).

A/B on the cgstd kit against main 0893606: leveldb and redis identical;
fmt 14, rocksdb 25 and protobuf 194 calls retargeted, each triaged against
C++'s choice (const twins, objects and arrays off the wrong pointer
overloads, temporaries to `T&&`).

Merge colbymchenry/codegraph main 1981354 into fork/consolidated.

The fork resolves references in the Rust kernel, so the TypeScript resolver
files upstream changed here stay deleted: name-matcher.ts, cpp-includers.ts,
cpp-macro-visibility.ts, cpp-namespaces.ts and cpp-type-aliases.ts, plus
upstream's new c-feature-variants.ts, which builds on cpp-macro-visibility.ts.
Their upstream versions are the specification for the native ports that
follow this commit.

Extraction follows upstream: c-cpp.ts, cpp-brace-scopes.ts, the new
cpp-macro-methods.ts and the parse-worker and tree-sitter changes merge as
written. The kernel's C++ naming takes upstream's explicit-specialization
names (ccpp/names.rs), and the callback synthesizer reads specialization
arguments through a new src/resolution/cpp-specializations.ts, since its
upstream home was name-matcher.ts.

CHANGELOG.md is rebuilt with scripts/changelog-reconcile.mjs, keeping the
fork's earlier removal of upstream's VB.NET and CRLF store entries and
taking upstream's newer wording of the Go standard-library-package entry.
…nt access

Port upstream colbymchenry#2576, colbymchenry#2579, colbymchenry#2598, colbymchenry#2601, colbymchenry#2602 and colbymchenry#2616 to the native
C++ receiver typing. A call now reads its receiver's type through:

- `->` on a container's iterator, `it->data()` on a
  `std::deque<Slice>::const_iterator`, including a project container's own
  iterator alias and an `auto` iterator from `begin()` or `find()`;
- a dereference, `(*it)->Visit()` and `(*it).Weight()`;
- a map iterator's `->second` and `->first`, and a pair's members;
- subscripts of arrays, pointers, standard sequences and maps, and a
  project class's `operator[]`;
- a standard container's accessors, `front()`, `back()`, `at()`, `top()`,
  and the iterator the standard algorithms return.

An element of a library type, or of the calling template's own parameter,
is refused rather than matched by name, as before.
… unwritten

`RunAll` in cpp-iterator-arrow and `Rep::Get` in cpp-map-iterator-calls
call through an element only a class template's own `operator*` or
`operator->` names. The fork leaves such calls unlinked instead of matching
the method by name (README, "About this fork"), so both expect the call
that is written out and nothing for the other.
…ough namespace aliases and macros

Port upstream colbymchenry#2567, colbymchenry#2568 and colbymchenry#2569 to the native C++ receiver typing:

- a receiver's method is looked up on the class its type names, anchored
  at the global scope, so `::upb::Arena& a` inside `namespace hpb` calls
  `upb::Arena::Fuse`, not `hpb::upb::Arena::Fuse`;
- a type written through a namespace alias another file declares is
  followed: protobuf hpb's `backend::Arena` under `namespace backend =
  hpb::internal::backend::upb;`. Of a file's alternative aliases for one
  build or another, the first is taken;
- a namespace a macro stands for is the project's under either name:
  `rocksdb::DB` reaches the `ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::DB` the index holds, and
  `ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::Cache` a class declared in `namespace rocksdb`;
- a class whose methods alone are indexed, protobuf's `DescriptorProto`,
  is called through the method its written name qualifies.
…type is not readable

A member of a template parameter (`typename PolicyT::Payload`) and a
receiver declared only in another function give the call no type to read.
Upstream matches the method by its name; the fork leaves such calls
unlinked (README, "About this fork").
…r type

Port upstream colbymchenry#2573. `SkipList<Key, Comparator>::Iterator iter` is the
skip list's own `Iterator`, written with `typename` in a template or
through a pointer too; the type was cut at its template arguments and
looked up as `SkipList`. A library template's member type is the
library's (`std::vector<int>::iterator`), except a container's
`value_type` or `reference`, a smart pointer's `element_type` and a map's
`mapped_type`, which name its element.
Port upstream colbymchenry#2612. A call to a function outside a class took whichever
same-named function the name strategies ranked first, by where it is.
Exact-name, qualified-name (global, scoped, exact and partial) and
macro-namespace matching now keep their choice of function and then let
the call's arguments pick among its overloads: the functions of its
qualified name the call's file can see, by count and string literals,
then by the types the arguments have. A qualified call no longer needs a
single candidate when the candidates are one function's overloads.

An overload only another source file sees, such as its `static`, never
competes, and a function hides a struct of its name (`sys::stat(path,
&st)`). Macro-namespace calls that fit alike by count are told apart by
type and stay unlinked only when the types tie too.
…category fit

Port upstream colbymchenry#2618 to the native overload choice. An argument's type now
carries whether it is const and whether it names an object:

- a const object never binds a non-const pointer or reference, and a value a
  call returns never binds a non-const reference;
- an object never converts to a pointer, and characters never to a non-void
  pointer, except to an overload's own template parameter;
- of two overloads that differ only in an added `const`, the call takes the
  one its argument's constness matches.

A range-for element of a `const` container keeps the `const`.
…now read

Four fork tests asserted a refusal the reconciled upstream behavior replaces:

- a subscript result's overload set, `j[0].dump()` and `j[0].dump(1)`, is
  decided by argument count once the subscript reads `Json&` (colbymchenry#2602);
- a macro-namespace overload set, `choose(1)`, is decided by the literal's
  type (colbymchenry#2612); a call whose argument type can't be read still declines;
- `std::vector<Slice>::value_type` is the element Slice (colbymchenry#2573), and
  `auto buf = caches[0]` on a `Cache*` is a Cache (colbymchenry#2602), as upstream's
  own version of the library-type test now expects.
Port upstream colbymchenry#2613. A C call now reaches the function of its name the
call's file sees, its own or one a header it includes defines, else one
with external linkage, the best placed of them; before, the name strategies
took the nearest one, and when that was another source file's `static` the
call was left unlinked.

- A source file's `static` function is visible to a file that includes it
  by any path the include writes (hiredis's async.c includes
  `deps/hiredis/dict.c`).
- An include matched by the end of its path never places a standard
  header: `<math.h>` is not a project's `test/math.h`.
…iles

Port upstream colbymchenry#2615 (c-feature-variants.ts) as resolve/c_feature_variants.rs.
When every definition a C call's file sees is compiled only by a build
that sets a flag nothing in the project sets, the call reaches a definition
with external linkage that the build without the flag compiles: lua-cjson's
fpconv.h defines `fpconv_init` under `#ifdef USE_INTERNAL_FPCONV`, and
redis's build calls fpconv.c's.

A flag is set when the definition's file defines it, a build file from the
project root down names it, or a C file of its component defines it. A
compiler or platform macro, and any test other than `defined`, flags,
integers, `!`, `&&`, `||` and parentheses, stays unknown. A call compiled
only with such a flag keeps its file's own definition.
…ters from its expansion

Port the resolver half of upstream colbymchenry#2605. A method a macro of its file
defines, like protobuf's `PROTOBUF_DEFINE_ACCESSOR(FieldDescriptor, number,
int)`, carries its expanded head as its signature; its source position is
the invocation, which spells neither its return type nor its parameters.
The receiver typing now reads the return type, and the overload choice the
parameters, from that head, and such a method is never taken for a deleted
overload.
…rguments name

Port the resolver half of upstream colbymchenry#2609 as resolve/cpp_specializations.rs.
An explicit specialization is now named after its template, so a call meets
both among a name's candidates. Wherever the resolver picks among C++
candidates (exact, qualified, global, partial, fuzzy and macro-namespace
matching, a typed receiver's members and a chain's, the implicit-this walk
and its bases):

- a call that writes template arguments reaches the specialization written
  with the same ones, spacing aside or qualified further on one side, else
  the template or an ordinary overload, else nothing;
- a call that writes none reaches a specialization only when nothing else
  has the name;
- a class's own member template, specialized but none for these arguments,
  ends the lookup there instead of falling to a base's namesake.
…erences

- README: the fork contains upstream main through 1981354; the C++ row on
  types the resolver cannot read now names an iterator's element and a
  map's key or value that a class template writes with its parameter.
- CHANGELOG: drop the older copy of the C++ `->` entry that upstream's
  expanded one replaces, keeping the fork's "left unlinked" wording for a
  class derived from something that can't be followed; drop the string
  literal entry again (the fork already behaved that way before this
  merge); add one fork entry for the calls the native resolver leaves
  unlinked where upstream matches the method by its name alone.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request expands C and C++ call resolution. It adds C feature-variant handling, C++ macro-defined method extraction, receiver-type inference, and overload and template-specialization selection. It also adds regression tests and updates resolution notes.

Changes: C and C++ Call Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
C conditional variants and function visibility
codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/c_feature_variants.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_overloads.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/names.rs, __tests__/c-feature-macro-variants.test.ts, __tests__/c-static-call-rescue.test.ts
C resolution evaluates supported preprocessor conditions using source, build, and component flags. Function selection accounts for feature variants and namespace-visible files. Regression tests cover conditional definitions, static functions, and include lookup.
C++ macro-defined method extraction
src/extraction/languages/cpp-macro-methods.ts, src/extraction/languages/cpp-brace-scopes.ts, src/extraction/parse-worker.ts, src/extraction/tree-sitter.ts, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/declarations_upstream.rs, __tests__/cpp-macro-defined-methods.test.ts
The extractor adds method nodes for eligible namespace-scope macro invocations. The extraction paths and resolution code read macro-defined method signatures and return types. Tests cover generated methods, overloads, specializations, scope, and extractor parity.
C++ receiver and element type inference
codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_range_for.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_receivers.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_types.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_namespace.rs, src/extraction/languages/c-cpp.ts, __tests__/cpp-*receiver*.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-*iterator*.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-*element*.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-container-accessor-calls.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-map-iterator-calls.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-template-member-types.test.ts
Receiver typing now covers library container members, iterators, dereferences, subscripts, arrays, pairs, and accessor results. Alias and macro-expanded namespace spellings are used in owner lookup. Tests cover project and external receiver types, including unresolved cases.
C++ overload and specialization selection
codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_overloads.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_specializations.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/bound.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_implicit_this.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/names.rs, src/resolution/cpp-specializations.ts, src/resolution/callback-synthesizer.ts, __tests__/cpp-free-function-overloads.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-overload-constness.test.ts, __tests__/cpp-specialization-names.test.ts
Candidate filtering and overload selection use explicit specialization arguments, argument types, constness, and source visibility. Explicit member-template specializations are excluded from synthesized override edges. Tests cover overloads, specialization names, and call targets. The changelog and README also update resolution notes and the documented upstream baseline.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3b327

In rare cases, a call made on an element of a const container may link to the non-const overload instead of the const one. This only affects the precision of the call graph, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3b327

The changes affect which C/C++ methods and calls appear in the generated graph, not application permissions. No introduced security defect was established. Recovery from interrupted updates to enlarged files remains only partly verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A source author can influence generated method nodes and static call links in the indexed project through the newly recognized C++ forms. The demonstrated outcome is graph-content change; the inspected paths do not establish additional tenant, credential, environment, or tool authority. Downstream uses outside the supplied repository evidence remain unassessed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new macro-method producer limits owner attachment to the same file and checks allocated IDs against existing nodes. The existing storage boundary filters extraction edges to endpoints present in the accepted node set.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing store worker acknowledges a bundle after the store call returns and reports failures through an error response. This handling is unchanged by the PR and is not, by itself, proof of recovery after process interruption.

172-191: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Cache the per-file #define scan per flag, or index the defines once.

variant_defined_in iterates every C/C++ file under the component for each distinct (flag, component) pair. It calls read_file_uncached for each file. In a large project with many distinct conditional flags, this is O(flags × files) of uncached file reads. The contains(name) prefilter still requires the file to be read. A one-time index of #define names per component would remove the repeated I/O.

…declares inside a namespace

The method's owner came from the written qualifiers alone, so it never
matched the class declaration's owner, which includes the enclosing
namespaces. The class's default arguments were dropped and a call that
omits them did not link. The owner now comes from the qualified name.

Review: #510 (review)
Head: afa4c2f
Reason: Declined (nitpick on variant_defined_in, c_feature_variants.rs). It is reached only for a flag that guards a C function definition in a header, that no build file names and that the definition's own file does not define. The answer is memoised per (flag, component), the same shape as upstream's c-feature-variants.ts that this ports, and the file list is built once. I measured no cost from it, and a per-component define index would run a regex over every file for the first flag, which the current contains(name) prefilter avoids. I would revisit with a profile showing the scan on a real corpus.

A receiver declared as `std::map<Key, Value>::value_type` was read as its
first template argument, the way a sequence's `value_type` is its element,
so `entry.swap(other)` linked to `Key::swap`. A map's `value_type` (and
`reference`, `const_reference`) is a `std::pair` of the key and the value:
a library type, so the call stays unlinked. A sequence's `value_type` is
still its element.

codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_range_for.rs:1015-1019
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve constness when inferring library iterators.

without_type_keywords removes const before cpp_library_iterator_of builds container::iterator for begin, find, and bounds lookups. iterator_container then passes the unqualified container to cpp_range_element_of, so dereferencing a const container produces Foo instead of const Foo.

When this expression is used as an argument, cpp_argument_type forwards the inferred type to const-aware overload fitting. The missing const can make an overload with a non-const reference or pointer parameter win over its const twin. Preserve the const iterator and element qualification through cpp_iterator_target and cpp_iterator_element before overload selection.

const on the dereferenced element so cpp_argument_type supplies the qualified

Review: #510 (review)
Head: 3b3272b
Reason: Reproduced, not changed in this merge. With a const container, Take(*v.begin()) and a Take(Foo&) / Take(const Foo&) pair links the non-const overload (a mutable container links it correctly). It is the same cause as the const_iterator case cubic raised on cpp_receivers.rs:105: the iterator ports follow upstream's behaviour, which does not carry const through the inferred element. Fixing it on the fork's side diverges from upstream, so it is recorded as a follow-up with the other reproduced cases rather than changed in this upstream sync.

Review: #510 (review)
Head: 3b3272b
Reason: Declined (nitpick on variant_defined_in, c_feature_variants.rs). It is reached only for a flag that guards a C function definition in a header, that no build file names and that the definition's own file does not define. The answer is memoised per (flag, component), the same shape as upstream's c-feature-variants.ts that this ports, and the file list is built once. I measured no cost from it, and a per-component define index would run a regex over every file for the first flag, which the current contains(name) prefilter avoids. I would revisit with a profile showing the scan on a real corpus.

…#511)

15 of the 17 defects reproduced during the review of #510 now link to the right target or to nothing; each fix has a test that fails without it. Two cases (const versus non-const method choice by receiver, exact-match overload ranking) are not fixed and are listed in the pull request.
