Summary

This makes Stack Encrypt produce every EQL v4 type that needs no ordering term and whose value kind vitaminc 0.5 already has: Text, Integer, IntegerEq, Bigint, BigintEq, Boolean, Real and Double, beside TextEq. It is what a Go co-development partner needs for an alpha before vitaminc 0.6 settles ordering.

Changes

  • eql_bindings::encryption::plaintext: Int32, Int64, Bool, Float32, Float64. vitaminc 0.5 implements Encrypt for String but not for the scalar types, and stack-encrypt deliberately has no combinator that re-encodes a plaintext. Each wrapper seals vitaminc's tagged leaf (the bytes FfiValue seals for the same value), opens only its own tag, and the integers derive the equality term of the integer inside.
  • By-name dispatch: Plaintext impls for each, refusing a value of another kind rather than converting it.
  • eql-codegen: ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS lists the new domains, each family names its plaintext type, and every "not producible" reason now comes from one function. The reasons: ordering waits for vitaminc-ore, float equality for vitaminc 0.6's canonical float, smallint/date/timestamp/numeric for their value kinds.
  • Json stays unproducible. A JSON value seals as a tree of encrypted leaves, and EQL's c field holds one. How a document becomes one sealed leaf is a storage-format decision this PR does not make.

Verification

  • New tests/encryption/tests/v4_types.rs:
    • each type round-trips through both the typed and the by-name entry points;
    • the stored leaf opens as the value enum's;
    • IntegerEq's term equals a plain i32's, and a 32-bit and a 64-bit 42 have different terms;
    • wrong kinds are refused;
    • a ciphertext moved to another width does not open.
  • Its PostgreSQL test, against a fresh eql_v4 install, stores every type, finds the right rows for = on IntegerEq and BigintEq, decrypts each, and gets "operator is not supported" for a storage-only comparison.
  • cargo publish -p eql-bindings --dry-run --all-features builds against the crates.io stack-encrypt 0.2.0. Rustdoc with -D warnings is clean; this PR also fixes one older private-item link.
  • Go tests and lints pass with rebuilt guests.

📝 Walkthrough

Stack Encrypt now supports storage-only EQL v4 scalar targets for integer, bigint, text, boolean, real, and double values. Rust bindings provide typed encryption and decryption for these values. Target catalogs, Go SDK metadata, documentation, and tests reflect the supported types and remaining unavailable variants.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bd9c6

The README understates which v4 types are available. Correct that statement; the remaining issue is bounded and does not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bd9c6

The new scalar storage types preserve the existing key, column-context, and exact-type checks in the reviewed paths. No introduced security failure was established, but plaintext-copy cleanup and end-to-end deployment compatibility were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated expansion is additional scalar data processed through existing EQL field plans. New dispatch arms still require the supplied keyset or opener and column context; they do not introduce an independent key authority. Broader tenant, service, or environment exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled target names and values encounter the catalog gate and exact FfiValue-variant checks. Stored bytes are parsed as the selected target and decrypted against the expected column. Unsupported query requests do not fall back to scalar storage encryption.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The wrappers and visitors contain per-call value or parser state, not shared mutable state. Existing Pending composition constructs record results only after constituent operations succeed, containing partial failures at the in-memory output boundary. This does not establish rollback of already-dispatched remote key operations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For deployments requiring strict plaintext-memory cleanup, document and verify the treatment of transient scalar copies across borrowed-source cloning and tagged-value consumption. The inspected code wipes the dispatch-owned copy but does not establish cleanup of every intermediate copy; no exploitable retention was demonstrated.

Review of this PR's own diff against feat/eql-v4-bindings. The core encoding is right: each scalar wrapper seals exactly the [tag] ++ payload leaf that vitaminc-aead-value 0.5.1 seals for the same value (I checked tags.rs/tagged.rs), each opens only its own tag and width, refusals carry kinds and never values, and the generated v4 files and eql_gen.go match a fresh eql-codegen bindings / go-eql run. The encryption test crate, clippy -D warnings, eql-codegen tests, and the new PostgreSQL test (run locally against a fresh eql_v4 install on Postgres 17) all pass. Two things need fixing before merge: the branch is red, and the equality terms are tied to a PRF domain that vitaminc is moving away from.

1. Blocker: stale assertions fail CI in two jobs, so the PostgreSQL and Go tests never run

  • packages/eql/crates/eql-bindings/src/encryption/targets.rs:613-620: a_producible_type_without_a_query_twin_answers_no_query still treats Text as unproducible. It asserts no_query(target("Text")).is_none() and refuse_query("Text") is Unproducible. Text is producible now, so both are wrong.
  • packages/eql/crates/eql-bindings/src/encryption/targets.rs:627: refusals_name_the_type_and_its_reason expects the TextOrdOre reason to contain "CLLW". This PR rewrote that reason.
  • languages/golang/encrypt/guest/src/targets.rs:182 and languages/golang/encrypt/guest/tests/native_ops.rs:1369 still assert producible == ["TextEq"].

cargo test --locked -p eql-bindings --all-features reproduces the first two locally (111 passed, 2 failed). In CI they fail "Rust workspace crates", at its mise run test:encryption step, and "WASI check, guests and Go (Linux)".

These failures matter beyond the red check:

  • test:encryption:postgres runs after test:encryption in test-eql.yml, so CI never ran the new postgres_stores_and_queries_every_producible_v4_type.
  • The guest failure skips "Go binding" and "Go live tests", so no Go test has run against the new types. The PR description says Go tests pass with rebuilt guests; the guest's own tests do not.

Suggested fix:

  • At line 613, assert that no_query(target("Text")) is Some(NoQuery { name: "Text" }) and that refuse_query("Text") is NoQuery.
  • For the "an unproducible type is refused as that" case, use a type that is still unproducible and has no query twin (Date, Json).
  • At line 627, match on "ordering terms".
  • In the two guest tests, update the producible list to the nine types.

2. Major: IntegerEq / BigintEq terms use vitaminc 0.5's per-width PRF domains, which the target design replaces

prf_by_inner! (plaintext.rs:123-144) derives the term through i32::prf_visit_with_context / i64::prf_visit_with_context. Those use the legacy primitive domains vitaminc/prf/encoding/i32-le/v1 and i64-le/v1. On vitaminc main, cipherstash/vitaminc#380 (merged, not yet released) adds value-derived equality domains: every integer kind shares one domain, vitaminc/prf/value/integer-orderable/v1, and "legacy primitive PrfValue encodings retain their existing domains" (packages/prf/src/value.rs). ADR-0002 then has dynamic::term take &Value.

When Stack Encrypt moves to vitaminc 0.6, one of two things happens:

  • IntegerEq keeps the legacy domain (prf_by_inner! as written does this). A Go int32 field with index=equality then derives the value-domain term, and it no longer matches IntegerEq's hm. The guarantee in plaintext.rs:13-15,124, README.md:123-124 and v4_types.rs:101-109 breaks with nothing to flag it.
  • IntegerEq moves to the value domain. Then every hm the Go alpha stored under this release stops matching queries. = returns no rows rather than an error.

equal_values_of_different_widths_have_different_terms (v4_types.rs:156-166) also pins the opposite of the upstream design, where 42 as int32 and as int64 share a term.

Since the stated purpose is an alpha for a Go partner, data will be stored under these terms. Suggested fix, either:

  • (a) ship only the storage-only types now (Integer, Bigint, Text, Boolean, Real, Double). Their ciphertexts use the frozen leaf tags and are unaffected. Keep IntegerEq/BigintEq back until the 0.6 domains are released.
  • (b) keep them, but say plainly in the README, the changeset and the plaintext module docs that hm terms from this release use vitaminc 0.5's domains and must be re-derived on the 0.6 upgrade. Drop or reword the width test so it does not pin a property the design removes.

3. Minor: the Go side has no guidance on integer and float widths, and one Go doc is now stale

  • languages/golang/cmd/stashgen/README.md:152 still says "The engine produces TextEq today; encrypt_into with any other type is refused".
  • This PR is the first where width matters, and the generator does not explain it:
    • kindOfWire (languages/golang/stashgen/engine.go:244) folds Int32 and Int64 into KindInt, and Float32/Float64 into KindFloat. A field such as Age int tagged stash:"age,encrypt_into=IntegerEq", or a float64 field tagged Real, passes stashgen's own kind check at engine.go:161.
    • The engine's plan check then refuses it, but with the generic engine message, not the "X seals a Y" one.
    • int8/int16 are emitted as gensupport.Int32 (emit.go kindExpr), so today they are accepted into IntegerEq. ADR-0002 gives them their own kinds before the Go SDK ships, and then those declarations will start being refused.

Suggested fix: list the producible types in the stashgen README with the Go type each needs: int32 for Integer/IntegerEq, int64 for Bigint/BigintEq, float32 for Real, float64 for Double, bool for Boolean. Compare wire kinds rather than Kind in stashgen's local check. A follow-up PR is fine for the check. The README line is direct drift from this PR.

4. Minor: test gaps behind the "open each other" claim and the generated dispatch

  • v4_types.rs checks only one direction: a typed write opens as the value enum (as_value_enum). Nothing seals a leaf through FfiValue (what a plain Go field writes) and opens it through Int32/Int64/Bool/Float32/Float64::decrypt. That is the direction LeafVisitor/BoolVisitor implement. I confirmed by reading vitaminc-aead-value 0.5.1 that the bytes agree, so this is a coverage gap, not a bug.
  • Of the nine generated encrypt/decrypt arms, only IntegerEq and Text go through targets::encrypt/decrypt. BigintEq's query arm (BigintEqQuery vs the stored hm) is never compared outside PostgreSQL. Float64 is never checked against the value enum. Real and Bigint are inserted into PostgreSQL but never read back.
  • A table-driven test over every producible row, through both targets::encrypt/decrypt and targets::query, would cover each arm and catch a swapped type/plaintext pairing in the generator.

5. Nit

packages/eql/crates/eql-bindings/README.md:184: the "Proven" interoperability row still cites only tests/encryption/tests/text_eq.rs. Add v4_types.rs now that it covers the other types.

Decision: withdraw IntegerEq and BigintEq from this stack for now

Following the review of this PR (finding 2), we are holding IntegerEq and BigintEq back. Their equality terms come from vitaminc 0.5's per-width PRF domains (i32-le/v1, i64-le/v1). vitaminc main (#380, merged but not released) replaces those with a single integer-orderable/v1 domain shared by every width. If we ship them now, the vitaminc 0.6 upgrade will either break the promise that IntegerEq matches a Go int32 equality field, or stop every stored hm from matching queries.

The storage-only types (Integer, Bigint, Text, Boolean, Real, Double) and TextEq / TextMatch stay. This comment covers #1163 through #1165. The work is not being done here, because the PRs below are being reworked at the same time and both changes touch the same codegen and generated files.

#1163 (this PR)

  • Source of truth: packages/eql/crates/eql-codegen/src/bindings.rs. Remove ("integer", "eq") and ("bigint", "eq") from ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS. In encryption_gap, give them a specific reason instead of the generic "not listed in ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS". For example: "the integer equality term will move to vitaminc's shared integer-orderable/v1 PRF domain; producing it before that release would make stored terms unmatchable after the upgrade". Update the codegen tests that assert gap(family("integer"), "eq").is_none() to match.
  • Regenerate: eql-bindings/src/v4/targets.rs (drop the IntegerEq / BigintEq arms in encrypt, open and query), languages/golang/encrypt/eql/eql_gen.go (back to Producible: false with the new reason), and the generated v4/integer.rs / v4/bigint.rs derive attributes. Then run mise run types:check and cargo test -p eql-codegen.
  • Tests:
    • packages/eql/tests/encryption/tests/v4_types.rs: remove or invert the IntegerEq / BigintEq round-trip, query and by-name cases. Drop the width test that pins the per-width design (around :156, the narrow: IntegerEq / wide: BigintEq comparison). Remove the ("IntegerEq", FfiValue::Int64(1), …) and ("BigintEq", FfiValue::Int32(1), …) kind-mismatch rows, or point them at the storage types. In the PostgreSQL test, drop the age / balance equality columns, or make them eql_v4_integer / eql_v4_bigint without the equality queries.
    • packages/eql/tests/encryption/tests/targets.rs: remove both names from the producible list.
    • languages/golang/encrypt/eql/eql_test.go: remove both names from want, and from the plaintext map, which should keep Boolean, Real and Double.
    • Add an assertion that IntegerEq and BigintEq are refused with the new reason, so a later re-enable is a deliberate change.
  • Docs:
    • .changeset/eql-v4-bindings.md: remove both from the "Stack Encrypt now produces" list.
    • eql-bindings/README.md: update the plaintext table and the paragraph on integer equality terms.
    • encryption/plaintext.rs: update the module docs, including the doctest that encrypts IntegerEq; switch it to Integer or another producible type.
  • Unrelated, but must happen on this branch anyway: the four stale producibility assertions from the review's finding 1. These are eql-bindings/src/encryption/targets.rs:613-620 and :627, plus the Go guest's src/targets.rs:182 and tests/native_ops.rs:1369. Their expected lists should be the final producible set after this withdrawal.

#1164

The #1164 review has a section listing every affected place:

  • the changeset sentence
  • the Go want list in eql_test.go
  • eql_gen.go
  • ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS
  • the generated targets.rs arms
  • the targets test lists and their unproducible-reason arm
  • the README
  • the shared PostgreSQL test, where removing the columns renumbers $9 and row.7

Once #1163's stale assertions are fixed, also add TextMatch to the Go guest's lists.

#1165

The #1165 review lists the affected places:

  • profiles.go:12,14
  • regenerate profile_stash.go
  • eql_v4_test.go
  • v4_queries.json:3-10
  • v4_types.rs:564-568, where .unwrap() would panic on Unproducible once the types are withdrawn, plus the doc comment at :544
  • the encrypt/README.md:288,290 table rows

The only stored-versus-query check in the new Go test uses Age, so it disappears with the withdrawal. Replace it with a TextMatch check that the query's bf positions are a subset of the stored bf, rather than leaving that check optional.

#1166

No changes needed.

Rebased onto the updated #1162. Added 30431b4: two encryption::targets unit tests still described the table from before this PR (Text unproducible, and TextOrdOre's reason naming CLLW), so they failed under cargo test -p eql-bindings --all-features. They now use the live table. The rest of the stack (#1164–#1166) is rebased with no other changes.

Rebased onto the updated #1162. 8f6ec20 answers the review above and carries out the withdrawal decision.

Withdrawal.

  • ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS drops ("integer", "eq") and ("bigint", "eq").
  • encryption_gap gives them their own reason, which names vitaminc 0.6's integer-orderable/v1 domain.
  • The generated v4 structs, the dispatch table and eql_gen.go are regenerated.
  • Int32 and Int64 no longer implement PrfValue, so nothing derives a term under the old per-width domains.
  • integer_equality_types_are_held_back_with_their_reason pins the refusal, so a re-enable is a deliberate change.

1. Stale assertions.

  • The eql-bindings unit tests use the live table, with Json as the unproducible type that has no query twin.
  • The guest's targets.rs and native_ops.rs assert the final set: Integer, Bigint, Text, TextEq, Boolean, Real, Double.
  • mise run wasm:guest:test passes (61/61), and so does go test ./... with rebuilt guests.

2. PRF domains. The withdrawal resolves this. The width test that pinned the per-width design is gone.

3. Go guidance. The stashgen README now lists each producible type with the Go field type it needs, and says that the width must match. eql.go's package doc no longer says TextEq only. I did not change stashgen's local Kind check to compare wire kinds; you said a follow-up was fine for that.

4. Test gaps.

  • a_leaf_the_value_enum_sealed_opens_as_the_typed_plaintext seals through FfiValue, the way a plain Go field does, and opens as each typed plaintext.
  • every_producible_type_dispatches_by_name runs every producible row through targets::encrypt, decrypt and query, comparing the stored and query hm where there is one.
  • Float64 is checked against the value enum.
  • The PostgreSQL test reads every column back, Real and Bigint included.

5. Nit. The README's "Proven" row cites v4_types.rs.

Verified locally:

  • types:check
  • the eql-codegen, eql-bindings --all-features and encryption suites
  • clippy -D warnings
  • the PostgreSQL test against a fresh v4 install on Postgres 17
  • go test ./...
  • go generate, which leaves no drift

Review attestation: automated /code-review medium plus /cross-check-review-findings on head 8f6ec203.

Critical/blocking: none.

Should fix (confirmed against the code):

  1. stashgen checks only the coarse kind, so int64+Integer and float64+Real pass generation, contradicting the README (inline).
  2. eql-bindings/src/encryption/plaintext.rs has no tests for the hand-rolled tagged-leaf encoding (inline).

Minor / plausible, not blocking:

  • Float PartialEq is IEEE, so tests of the documented bit-pattern round trip can't use ==. Copy plaintext scalars also can't be zeroized.
  • For unproducible types that now carry plaintext: Some(...) (IntegerEq, IntegerOrd*, BigintEq, …), the width/kind error fires before the "held back until vitaminc 0.6" reason.
  • eql_test.go pins the producible list by exact catalog order, so the Go test and two Rust tests must be edited together.
  • The changeset names only @cipherstash/eql. stashgen behaviour changes too, but Go has no release process yet.

Code review (medium). Two inline findings above, plus one on a file outside this diff:

  • languages/golang/stashgen/enginetest/enginetest.go:22,49 (not changed by this PR): the Static stub still lists only TextEq as producible and its refusal says "it produces TextEq". The real engine now produces seven types, so a stashgen test using encrypt_into=Integer (or Text, Bigint, Boolean, Real, Double) passes against the real engine but is refused by the stub. Worth updating alongside this PR.

No correctness bugs found in the target dispatch or codegen reasons. Nothing was built or run.

…text types

A Go partner needs a pre-release of EQL v4 with Stack Encrypt before
vitaminc 0.6 settles ordering. These are the v4 types that need no
ordering term and whose value kind is already in vitaminc 0.5's value
enum: Text, Integer, IntegerEq, Bigint, BigintEq, Boolean, Real and
Double, beside TextEq.

vitaminc 0.5 implements Encrypt for String but not for i32, i64, bool or
the floats, and stack-encrypt deliberately has no combinator that
re-encodes a plaintext. So eql_bindings::encryption::plaintext adds
Int32, Int64, Bool, Float32 and Float64: each seals vitaminc's tagged
leaf, the bytes FfiValue seals for the same value, opens only its own tag,
and the integers derive the equality term of the integer inside. A value
written through these types and one the Go SDK writes as a plain field
open each other, and IntegerEq's term is a plain i32's.

The derive reasons now have one source, encryption_gap: ordering terms
wait for vitaminc-ore, float equality for vitaminc 0.6's canonical float,
smallint/date/timestamp/numeric for their value kinds. Json stays
unproducible: a JSON value seals as a tree of leaves and EQL's c holds
one, and how a document becomes one leaf is a wire decision not made here.

The encryption test crate checks each type through both entry points,
against the value enum's leaf and the plain integer's term, and in
PostgreSQL on an eql_v4 install: equality queries on IntegerEq and
BigintEq return the right rows and every stored value opens.

Refs #1130, #1133
Text became producible in this PR, so it is now the live storage-only
type the no-query rule describes, and TextOrdOre's refusal names
vitaminc-ore rather than CLLW. Both unit tests still asserted the old
table and failed under --all-features.
Their equality terms came from vitaminc 0.5's per-width PRF domains
(i32-le/v1, i64-le/v1). vitaminc main replaces those with one
integer-orderable/v1 domain for every width, so shipping them now would
either break the promise that IntegerEq matches a Go int32 equality field
or leave every stored hm unmatchable after the upgrade. Both leave
ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS with a reason that names the domain, the generated
dispatch and the Go table mark them unproducible, and the PRF impls on
Int32 and Int64 are removed so nothing derives a term under the old
domains. The storage-only types, TextEq and the plaintexts stay.

v4_types.rs now covers what the review found missing: a leaf the value
enum sealed opens as each typed plaintext, every producible row goes
through all three by-name entry points (a swapped type or plaintext in
the generator fails), Float64 is checked against the value enum, and the
Postgres test reads every column back. The width test that pinned the
per-width design is gone. The guest's producibility assertions and the
eql-bindings unit tests use the final producible set, and the stashgen
README lists each producible type with the Go field type it takes.

… bits, check widths

- plaintext.rs: Float32 and Float64 compare by bit pattern, so -0.0 is not
0.0 and a NaN equals itself, the equality a round trip preserves. Unit
tests pin each leaf's tag, width and little-endian order through the
same reader Decrypt uses, and refuse another tag or width.
- The generated plaintext doc line shows without the stack-encrypt
feature again; only its link to crate::encryption is feature-gated.
- stashgen refuses a field of the right kind and the wrong width
(int64 into Integer, float64 into Real) itself, naming both widths,
  as its README says.
- enginetest.Static lists the seven types the engine produces, with their
  widths.
- The eql-bindings README no longer says TextEq is the only producible
  type.

Pushed f0cf0c2, which answers the remaining review threads (replied inline). On the review-body items:

  • enginetest.Static now lists the seven types the engine produces, with their widths, and checks width the way stashgen does.
  • eql_test.go pins the producible list in catalog order. Not changed. The order is the catalog's, and the Go table and both Rust lists come from it, so a change there should touch all three on purpose.
  • The changeset names only @cipherstash/eql. Not changed. stashgen ships with the Go module, which has no changeset-driven release; its behaviour change appears in the module's README.
  • The kind error fires before the "held back" reason. stashgen checks producibility before kind, and so does targets::encrypt in eql-bindings, so neither has this order. If you saw it elsewhere, it is in stack-encrypt's plan check, which this PR does not change.
