ci(golang): tag Go module releases with their WASI guests - #1167
This lands the Go module's release workflow on main by itself, so it can be dispatched. GitHub only lets you start a manual (workflow_dispatch) workflow whose file is on the default branch. The goal is to cut a Go alpha for a co-development partner from the EQL v4 stack (#1162–#1166) before that stack merges. The first commit is the same one as #1166. The second addresses the review feedback here, so #1166 needs the same change, or needs dropping, when the stack rebases.
The Go module embeds three WebAssembly engine builds ("guests") compiled from Rust. They are gitignored on main, and Go fetches a version as the files committed at its tag. So a tag on a main commit would give users a module that builds and then fails at NewClient with ErrGuestNotBuilt.
Changes
.github/workflows/release-golang.yml is dispatched by hand with a version, and runs three jobs:
build holds no write token, and is the only job that runs third-party code. It:
checks the version and the ref;
refuses a version the Go proxy already lists, reading @v/list only, which catches a tag deleted after the proxy fetched it;
checks the Cargo.lock files of the EQL workspace and both guest workspaces are current;
builds the EQL SQL bundles first, stamping eql_v4.version() with go-<version>, so a ref without the v4 bundle fails early;
builds the guests and hashes them;
builds the deterministic test guests and runs the Go tests;
checks the hashes are unchanged;
builds the release commit and checks it from git archive, the way go get will see it.
It hands the guests, hashes and SQL to publish as an artifact, together with the git tree it tested. The three guest paths are a fixed GUESTS list in the workflow, and no job reads paths from the artifact.
publish holds contents: write and runs only git and gh. It fetches the commit with unauthenticated git rather than actions/checkout, so the token goes only to the tag push and to gh. It:
refuses a guests.sha256 that is not exactly one SHA-256 line for each guest in GUESTS;
rebuilds the release commit from the artifact, and refuses it unless its tree matches the one build tested;
tags it languages/golang/v<version> and pushes only the tag;
creates the GitHub release, as a pre-release when the version has a suffix, with the EQL v4 install and uninstall SQL and the guests' SHA-256 attached.
It runs in the release-golang environment, which requires approval from a member of the Developers team before the job starts.
verify is read-only. It downloads the module zip through proxy.golang.org from an empty directory with GOWORK=off, and checks the guests in the zip against the hashes.
scripts/go-release-version.mjs (with tests) runs before anything is built. It refuses:
any version Go would refuse: non-canonical semver, +build metadata, a major version the module path can't publish (0 or 1 only, since there is no /vN suffix), or a version shaped like a pseudo-version;
a final version dispatched from anywhere but main. Pre-releases may come from a branch.
Retry: the tag is never moved or deleted, because a version can't change once the proxy has fetched it. If publish or verify fails, "Re-run failed jobs" on the same run keeps a tag that run pushed, and creates or completes the release.
No cache restore anywhere in the workflow, because it publishes binaries. It is registered with lint-no-workflow-caching, and the EQL suite's publish-path exemption now names the build job.
AGENTS.md and SECURITY.md document the process.
languages/golang/LICENSE (MIT) and a licence note in the encrypt and auth READMEs. The READMEs also say that a tagged version includes the guests, and that a pseudo-version or a checkout doesn't.
Verification
pnpm run test:scripts: 73 files pass, 1,329 tests. That includes every workflow lint and the new go-release-version tests.
actionlint (with shellcheck) on the workflow: clean.
cargo metadata --locked passes for both guest workspaces on this branch and on ci/golang-release.
On ci/golang-release, the module from git archive builds standalone with GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=readonly.
The parsing of go mod download -json | jq -er .Dir was checked against a real version and a missing one.
Simulated earlier on the stack branch: the release commit and tag, then git archive of the tag contains all three guests, and a consumer module built from that tree loads the EQL guest.
The workflow itself has not run yet.
Review notes
Dispatch it against a ref that has the EQL v4 bundle, not main. The bundle comes from feat(eql): build the eql_v4 bundle beside eql_v3 #1161, so on main the "Build the EQL SQL bundles" step fails. For the partner alpha:
gh workflow run release-golang.yml -f version=0.1.0-alpha.1 --ref ci/golang-release
Licensing: the Go code is MIT, and the embedded guests are compiled from the stack-* crates, which stay PolyForm Internal Use. languages/golang/LICENSE (the MIT text) makes every release zip carry a licence: Go reads only a file named exactly LICENSE, and the repo root has LICENSE.md. The encrypt and auth READMEs state the guests' licence.
Tag protection: no ruleset covers languages/golang/v* tags today. If one is added, it has to allow the Actions token.
Added a manually triggered Go module release process with version and source checks. Releases include tested WASI guests, an EQL v4 SQL bundle, and guest verification hashes. Final releases are restricted to main; prereleases may be created from other branches.
Documentation
Documented release requirements, tag immutability, and guidance for recovering from failed post-release steps.
Added license information for the Go module and its embedded components.
The Go module embeds three WASI guests built from Rust, and they are
gitignored on main. Go fetches a module version as the files committed at
its tag, so tagging a main commit would give `go get` a module that builds
and then fails at NewClient with ErrGuestNotBuilt.
release-golang.yml is dispatched by hand with a version. It builds the
guests and the deterministic test builds, runs the Go tests against them,
builds the EQL SQL bundles, then commits the three guests on a release-only
commit that no branch points at, tags it languages/golang/v<version> and
pushes the tag alone. The GitHub release carries the EQL v4 install and
uninstall SQL and the guests' SHA-256, and is marked a pre-release for a
pre-release version. A last step asks proxy.golang.org for the version so a
tag that does not resolve fails the run.
It restores no cache, since it publishes binaries, and is registered with
lint-no-workflow-caching and the EQL suite's publish-path exemption.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 7204f
The release design separates build execution from publishing authority and constrains which files enter release tags. No concrete security bypass was established. Build-output trust and the actual release-approval configuration remain important dependencies that could not be fully verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A compromised release build could influence the three distributed guest payloads and the SQL assets installed by release consumers. Fixed paths constrain additions to the release commit, but do not authenticate payload semantics. Downstream tenant, credential, and database exposure was not established by this inspection.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Build and verification inherit read-only repository permissions; only publish requests contents write. Checkout credentials are not persisted, and the publishing token is provided to the tag-push and release commands rather than to build execution.
observed — The checksum manifest remains workspace data while subsequent build and test commands run. SQL assets are attached without inclusion in the guest checksum manifest or release-tree comparison. These checks establish guest-byte consistency across transfer, not independent assurance against a compromised producer.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The publisher rejects mismatched existing tags rather than moving them. Recovery preserves a matching tag and can replace release assets, making tag immutability distinct from asset mutability.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Confirm that release-golang has effective required-reviewer protection and that permitted refs match the intended prerelease policy before relying on the environment as an approval boundary.

Critical / blocking: none.
Checked:
The version input is regex-validated and passed through env, so there is no script injection.
The existing-tag guard, the stamp grep-back, and the permissions scoping all hold.
The new entries in the lint target lists and the eql-suite-ci expectation are consistent with the workflow.
The AGENTS.md update matches the workflow.
Three non-blocking notes are inline:
The contents: write token persists in .git/config during untrusted cargo builds.
Any ref can be dispatched to publish a Go module tag.
A failure after the tag push means the version has to be bumped.
Not verified: the workflow has not been run (as the PR states), so the go list -m proxy step and the tag push under any tag-protection rules are untested.

Code review (medium): 8 findings posted inline. The two blockers are the missing EQL v4 bundle, which fails every dispatch, and the tag being pushed before the release is created.

…s first
The release job held `contents: write` in `.git/config` while it ran every
cargo build script, proc macro and Go test in the module's dependency tree,
and it pushed the tag before anything that could fail after it, so a version
Go refuses, or a failed `gh release create`, spent the version number.
The workflow is now three jobs. `build` has no write token: it builds and
tests the guests, builds the EQL bundles first so a ref without the v4 bundle
fails in minutes, checks the guests' lockfiles are current, hashes the
guests before the tests and checks them after, and proves the release tree
from `git archive` as `go get` will see it. `publish` holds the write token
and runs only git and gh; it rebuilds the release commit from the artifact
and refuses it unless its tree is the one `build` tested. It accepts a tag
an earlier attempt of the same run pushed, so "Re-run failed jobs" finishes a
release instead of burning the version. `verify` is read-only and downloads
the module zip through the proxy from an empty directory with GOWORK off,
checking the guests in it against the hashes.
scripts/go-release-version.mjs refuses non-canonical semver, +build
metadata, a major the module path cannot publish, and a final version from
anywhere but main, before anything is built.
Refs #1034.
Go puts a licence in a module's zip only from a file named exactly
LICENSE, in the module directory or at the repository root, and the root
file here is LICENSE.md. So every release zip went out with no licence at
all, and pkg.go.dev would not show the module's documentation.
languages/golang/LICENSE is the repository's MIT text. The encrypt and auth
READMEs now say that the WASI guests the module embeds are compiled from the
stack-* crates, which stay under the PolyForm Internal Use License.
Refs #1034.
workflow-publish-permissions.test.mjs found publishing workflows by their
`id-token: write` job, and the Go release publishes by pushing a tag with
`contents: write`, no OIDC. So the test never looked at it, and `build` or
`verify` could have been given write access with the suite still green.
TAG_PUBLISHING_WORKFLOWS names it as a publishing workflow, and
`release-golang.yml / publish` joins REPO_WRITE_JOBS as the one job there
that may write. A new check keeps the list honest: each entry must be a real
workflow with a sanctioned writer.
The encrypt README's licence note now names stack-profile, which the
encrypt guest compiles in through stack-auth.

… artifact
The publish job read the paths it committed from the artifact's
guests.sha256. The build job writes that manifest before it runs
third-party code (the deterministic guest builds and the Go tests), so a
compromise there could add a line naming any file, ship the file in the
artifact, and have publish commit it to the tag with the write token. The
tree check would not catch it, because build derives the tree it reports
from the same manifest.
The three guest paths now live in a workflow-level GUESTS list that every
job reads. publish refuses a manifest that is not exactly one SHA-256 line
for each of them, in order, before it copies anything.
go-release-artifact.test.mjs runs the real publish step against forged
manifests: an extra, substituted or out-of-module path, a missing or
reordered guest, and a BSD-format line that sha256sum -c also accepts.
This EQL build runs two plain cargo run commands (packages/eql/tasks/build.sh:44,80), so a stale packages/eql/Cargo.lock is silently regenerated while producing the SQL release assets. Those assets can then depend on versions absent from the source ref and cannot be reproduced later; apply the same locked-metadata preflight used for the guest workspaces.
Prevent checkout from receiving the repository write token
.github/workflows/release-golang.yml:234
persist-credentials: false prevents the credential from remaining in Git config, but actions/checkout still defaults its token input to github.token and uses it for the fetch. In this job that token has contents: write, so the checkout action receives the repository writer despite the stated invariant that only the explicit push and gh get it. Fetch this public commit with unauthenticated Git instead.
Reject pseudo-version-shaped release inputs before tagging
scripts/go-release-version.mjs:80
Pseudo-version-shaped inputs such as 0.0.0-20261012131135-deadbeefdead pass this validation. Go ignores tags that look like pseudo-versions and instead validates their embedded revision and timestamp against VCS metadata, so this release will fail only in verify, after the immutable tag has been pushed. Reject every shape recognized by module.IsPseudoVersion before building and add a regression case for it.
- Refuse a version the Go proxy already lists. The tag check misses a tag
deleted after the proxy fetched it, and a new tag at that number would
fail every user's checksum. The check reads @v/list only: asking for the
version before its tag exists makes the proxy cache "not found" for up
to 30 minutes, which would fail `verify` after the push.
- Refuse a version shaped like a Go pseudo-version. Go checks such a tag
against a commit and timestamp rather than reading it as a tag, so it
would fail only in `verify`, after the push. The pattern is
golang.org/x/mod/module's, and the test cases were checked against
module.IsPseudoVersion.
- Check packages/eql's Cargo.lock with --locked alongside the guests', and
before the EQL build, whose `cargo run`s pass no --locked.
- Fetch the commit in `publish` with unauthenticated git instead of
actions/checkout, whose token input defaults to the job's writable
token even with persist-credentials: false.
- Make go-release-artifact.test.mjs portable: fixture hashes come from
node:crypto, GNU install and sha256sum are shimmed from Homebrew's g*
names when present, and the suite skips on a bash without mapfile.
- Say in the encrypt and auth READMEs that a tagged version carries the
WASI guests and a pseudo-version or checkout does not.
The three findings Copilot listed as previously missed in its last review are fixed in 556f239:
Locked EQL build:packages/eql's Cargo.lock is now checked with cargo metadata --locked, together with both guest workspaces. The check runs before the EQL build.
Write token reaching checkout:publish no longer uses actions/checkout. It fetches $GITHUB_SHA with plain unauthenticated git, so the job's token reaches only the tag push and gh.
Pseudo-version inputs:scripts/go-release-version.mjs refuses any version shaped like a Go pseudo-version, using the pattern from golang.org/x/mod/module. The tests cover all three pseudo-version forms and two close misses. Each case was checked against module.IsPseudoVersion.
The same commit also adds a check before the tag that the Go proxy doesn't already list the version. The check reads @v/list only, because asking the proxy for a version before its tag exists caches "not found" for up to 30 minutes. The commit also changes the encrypt and auth READMEs to say that a tagged version includes the WASI guests, and that a pseudo-version or a checkout doesn't.
