Summary

Stacked on #531 (migrate/slice-6).

Each clerk migrate event now says where the users came from, how far the run got, and which Clerk app and instance it acted on.

 CLI_COMMAND_EXECUTED.payload
   command, flags, outcome, exit_code, error_code
- stage # null on every migrate run
+ stage # migrate_source … migrate_import, done
   duration_ms
+ instance_id # ins_…, sent by migrate only
+ migrate_source # auth0 … workos, or custom
   ...envelope
- app_id, workspace_id # the linked project
+ app_id, workspace_id # the target's app, else the linked project
setTelemetryTarget(appId, instanceId)
keep appId if it starts with app_
keep instanceId if it starts with ins_ # drops --instance dev and the key_ hash
app_id = target.appId
?? the linked app, when the linked profile owns target.instanceId
?? the linked app, when the command set no target

Partial exits now carry codes: migrate_checks_rejected, migrate_import_partial, migrate_undo_incomplete and migrate_export_truncated. The first-run notice and the root README name the new fields. commands/migrate/README.md lists every stage under "What telemetry records".

Evidence

  • Before: a migrate run sends "stage": null, with no migrate_source or instance_id key. A run with --secret-key for another app reports the linked project's app_id.
After: CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate import users.json --source ./my-source.ts --secret-key sk_test_… --dry-run --verbose sends "stage": "migrate_dry_run", "migrate_source": "custom" and "instance_id": null. The event holds no source path, source name or key_ hash.
  • With --app app_abc --instance dev, the event sends "app_id": "app_abc" and drops dev.
  • bun run test: 6626 pass, 0 fail. New cases cover each stage, the target rules, the guards, and the four codes.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

A revert removes the fields. Events already sent stay in the warehouse.

Blast Radius: telemetry

Every CLI_COMMAND_EXECUTED event gains instance_id and migrate_source, null outside migrate. If the data-platform payload contract (data-platform#604) checks keys or stage values per command, it needs the new ones. app_id changes for migrate runs only. clerk feedback passes no target, so CLI_FEEDBACK events don't change. People who already saw the first-run notice won't see the new wording, because telemetryNoticeShown is a boolean.

Docs: DOCS-12376.

Walkthrough

Migration commands now record source platforms, target identifiers, execution stages, and selected error outcomes in telemetry. Telemetry resolves app and workspace identifiers from command targets and linked profiles. Migration requests can include a migrate User-Agent segment when telemetry is enabled and the disclosure notice has been shown. Documentation and the telemetry notice describe the reported fields and selected stage and error-code mappings.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · up to 01321

Two low-impact telemetry inaccuracies remain: some migration requests lack the migration marker, and invalid export options report an incorrect stage.

Existing users won't see this new wording. markTelemetryNoticeShown saves telemetryNoticeShown as a boolean, so a machine that showed the old notice never shows it again.

I left it that way on purpose. The new fields are small (the platform a migration's users come from, and the target's instance ID), and showing the notice again would put an extra notice in front of every existing user. The docs page lists the new fields (clerk/clerk#3726, clerk/clerk#3727).

Should that change? To show the notice again for the new fields, the boolean would become a notice version, and the CLI would show the notice again on any machine with an older saved version. That run would send nothing, as a first run does today. It's a small change in config.ts and showTelemetryNoticeOnce.

Requests from clerk migrate look like any other CLI request in the User-Agent, so the Backend API logs can't tell a migration's user creates from clerk users create. With a marker there, those logs could count the users each migration created per instance and tie them to the account and its spend. The logs only keep 90 days, so the sooner it ships, the less history we lose.

Should we add it to this PR?

…a declined import

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When `GET /v1/instance` failed on an import keyed by `--secret-key` or
`CLERK_SECRET_KEY`, `setTelemetryTarget` dropped the `key_` stand-in, the
target ended up empty, and the event fell back to the linked profile's
app and workspace: an app the run may never have touched. A stand-in now
counts as a target that's set but unnamed, so `app_id` and
`workspace_id` go out as null, as the README says. An `--instance` alias
still reports the linked app.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`migrate_source` was checked against a list in `lib/telemetry.ts` that
nothing tied to the registries, so a new built-in source or export
platform would have reported as `custom`. `recordMigrateSource` now
checks `sourceKeys()` and `exportPlatformKeys()` instead, in
`commands/migrate/telemetry.ts` so `lib/telemetry.ts` doesn't load every
source on every command. It stays the only caller of
`setTelemetryMigrateSource`, so the payload still only sees a shipped
source or `custom`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`clerk migrate`'s Backend API requests looked like any other CLI request
in the `User-Agent`, so the logs couldn't tell a migration's user creates
from `clerk users create`. The migrate group now marks its requests, and
the `User-Agent` gains a `migrate` segment. Like `AIAgent`, the segment
is for analytics, so the fetch layer leaves it out under the telemetry
opt-outs and until the disclosure notice has shown.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…is null

The README said migrate events carry "plus four" fields, though `app_id`
and `stage` go out on every command, and that each is null when the run
never learned it, though `app_id` falls back to the linked project. It
now says migrate adds `migrate_source` and `instance_id` and gives
`app_id` and `stage` values of its own, with the null cases in each row.

…voice

the exceptions sentence no longer repeats the fields the first sentence

Added in 4a64a6d. While clerk migrate runs, its Backend API requests send Clerk-CLI/<version> (…; migrate). The migrate group's preAction hook marks the process, and the fetch layer adds the segment. It follows the same rules as AIAgent: the CLI leaves it out under the telemetry opt-outs and until the disclosure notice has shown, so migrations by users who opted out aren't counted. The migrate README's telemetry section and a changeset say so. Tests cover the segment present, absent when nothing marks the requests, absent under an opt-out, and absent before the notice.

The README said the CLI leaves the `migrate` segment out until the
telemetry notice has shown. Like the events and the `AIAgent` segment, CI
is exempt, so the segment goes out on a CI's first run. Applies the
review's wording.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… run resolves

The migrate group records `--app` and `--instance` as a telemetry target
before anything resolves, so a run that stops early still names what it
was pointed at. The README said `instance_id` is null in that case. It
now says a run that hasn't resolved its target sends the `ins_…` or
`app_…` you passed, unchecked.

Usage events skip dev builds (telemetryEnabled in telemetry.ts), but this gate doesn't, so a dev build sends ; migrate (and AIAgent) whenever its notice has shown or it runs in CI. Our own testing with dev builds would then count as migrations in the Backend API logs.

Should this gate skip dev builds too?

Changed in 4ddcd19. The gate now skips dev builds, so our own testing won't count as migrations. Both segments share the gate, so this covers AIAgent too. CLERK_TELEMETRY_URL lifts it, as it does in telemetryEnabled. fetch.ts can't import that function because telemetry.ts imports fetch.ts, so the check sits inline.

| `undo` with deletes left | `migrate_undo_incomplete` | 1 |
| `export` the platform cut short | `migrate_export_truncated` | 1 |

`clerk migrate` also adds a `migrate` segment to the `User-Agent` of its Backend API requests (`Clerk-CLI/<version> (…; migrate)`), so Clerk's logs can count the users each migration creates. The CLI follows the same rules as for telemetry: it leaves the segment out when telemetry is off and, outside CI, until the telemetry notice has shown.

The flag is process-wide in loggedFetch, so a migrate run's Platform API, Frontend API, and Auth0, WorkOS, and Firebase export requests carry migrate too, not only the Backend API ones. Maybe "the User-Agent of the requests it sends"?

Changed in 0132193. The README and changeset now say "the requests it sends", because the flag applies to the whole process through loggedFetch. Platform API, Frontend API, and Auth0, WorkOS, and Firebase export requests carry migrate too.

Usage events skip dev builds, but the gate for the `AIAgent` and `migrate`
User-Agent segments didn't, so our own testing with a dev build would
count as migrations in the Backend API logs. The gate now skips dev
builds too, unless `CLERK_TELEMETRY_URL` lifts that, as it does for the
events.

The flag lives in `loggedFetch` for the whole process, so Platform API,
Frontend API, and export requests carry `migrate` too, as well as the
Backend API requests the docs named.

Route libsql export requests through loggedFetch.

When telemetry markers are eligible, clerk migrate export authjs or betterauth with a libsql:// URL reaches libsqlClient.query, which calls the global fetch directly. This request does not receive the ; migrate User-Agent segment, so the database service cannot identify it as a migration request. Use the existing fetch boundary.

Validate --output before recording the export-read stage.

For a leaf export command, the preAction hook records migrate_export_read before it validates --output. An invalid extension then raises a usage error, so the command can emit telemetry that says credentials and users were read even though export never started.

Move recordMigrateSource(...) and setTelemetryStage(...) below the extension check.
