  • We may want to pass a different location for the ContainerFile instead of the root dir. Add --file so we can pass it
  • It is useful when we are building using layering for example, so we use a different location with a custom ContainerFile

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a --file=PATH option to select a Containerfile relative to the configuration directory. Build arguments are loaded from the Containerfile’s directory when it’s in a subdirectory.

cmd-build adds --file=PATH to select a Containerfile relative to the config directory. The build context remains the config directory. If the selected Containerfile is in a subdirectory, the command loads build arguments from that directory and passes the file to buildah with -f.

Changes: Containerfile selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add the --file option
src/cmd-build
The help text documents --file. The command accepts the option and stores its argument in CONTAINERFILE.
Use the selected Containerfile
src/cmd-build
When the Containerfile is in a subdirectory, the command selects build arguments from that directory. It passes the selected path to buildah with -f.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a6566

Builds using a selected Containerfile path containing spaces fail, while paths without spaces are unaffected. The issue is narrow and has a workaround, so the PR is mergeable with this risk tracked; fixing argument serialization would prevent those build failures.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the Containerfile path as one argument.

If CONTAINERFILE contains spaces, Line 256 writes the unquoted $@ into the generated script. The shell then splits the path, and buildah receives an invalid -f argument. Serialize the arguments with shell-safe quoting or avoid reparsing them through a generated script.
