Add offline iOS Shortcuts for books and clippings - #58
Adds read-only iOS Shortcuts actions for querying synced books and clippings:
Find Books: filter by reading status or title/author.
Get Book: retrieve progress, last sync, and cache freshness.
Find Clippings: filter by book, text, or creation date.
Actions return structured entities and work offline using the app’s existing cached data. Cache timestamps remain unchanged during offline reads, signing out clears the native snapshot, and entity identifiers are scoped to the server and account.
Includes iOS build integration, usage documentation, and tests. Signing configuration and Personal Team build tooling are outside this PR.
Validation: 239 app tests, 12 Swift store checks, two Rust persistence checks, and the app build pass. iOS compilation and App Intents metadata extraction were also verified.
Tested in iOS simulator of iPhone 18 pro in iOS 27.1 and on a physical iPhone 16 pro running iOS 27.2

Walkthrough
The app publishes a credential-free snapshot of cached books and clippings to private native storage for read-only iOS Shortcuts actions. Cache updates account for session changes, stale reads, and reading-data mutations. The change adds native and frontend tests, action documentation, and verification steps.
Reading-data requests reject stale results. Clipping reads stage paginated results and update cached records with freshness metadata. Cache updates handle deleted clippings, removed books, merges, and incomplete responses. Tests cover these cache and mutation cases.
The frontend builds an allowlisted snapshot from cached progress and clippings, then publishes it through Tauri. Session changes and reading-data operations update or clear the snapshot. Tests cover publication, account isolation, platform gating, and cache failures.
Native snapshot storage and command app/src-tauri/src/shortcuts_cache.rs, app/src-tauri/src/widget.rs, app/src-tauri/src/lib.rs
The Tauri command publishes JSON through a temporary file and rename, or removes the snapshot when no JSON is supplied. The command is registered for invocation. Tests cover publication and clearing.
Actions and snapshot validation docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-28-ios-shortcuts-design.md, app/scripts/shortcuts-tests/main.swift, app/README.md, docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-28-ios-shortcuts.md
The design and app documentation describe the read-only actions, filters, returned data, cache limits, and verification steps. The Swift test script checks snapshot filtering, identifiers, timestamps, and private cache loading.

The previously reported snapshot performance issue is fixed. A native Shortcuts failure can still make a successful account-data deletion appear to fail, so merging warrants owner awareness and a follow-up fix.

Coalesce snapshot rebuilds in the legacy clippings fallback.
When /api/v1/clippings returns 404, allClippings calls api.clippings for each book through Promise.all. Each of those calls ends with syncShortcutsCache(s), so a library with N books triggers N full snapshot rebuilds in one batch. Only servers without the hub endpoint take this path.
syncShortcutsCache gates only on isApp, so the rebuild also runs on Android and desktop Tauri builds.
Coalesce the publish so that one batch produces one snapshot. A trailing debounce or a single publish after Promise.all resolves would both work. For a debounce, publish null immediately when there is no session. Cancel any pending timer when the session changes, including on logout. Otherwise a delayed publish can write the previous account's data after the clear. Adjust any tests that expect an immediate publish.

Purge shortcut data when reading data is cleared
When a signed-in user chooses Clear reading data, the current Settings.jsx flow calls api.clearData and immediately reloads without invoking logout or clearOffline, so these new reads republish the pre-clear localStorage books and clippings. If the post-reload refresh fails or the process exits before it completes, the Shortcuts actions can continue returning data that the server has just deleted; clear the account's offline keys and native snapshot as part of a successful clearData call before reloading.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Invalidate per-book clips after hub deletion
When an account has more than 5,000 live clips and a book has an older per-book cache, deleting one of that book's clips from the all-book Clippings screen is followed by a fresh 5,000-item hub response that omits the ID. This branch treats every omission as truncation and appends the old per-book item, so the just-deleted clipping remains in the native snapshot and Find Clippings returns it; remove known deleted IDs from the per-book cache or refresh that aggregate before merging capped results.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Swallow native cache errors after a successful deletion
On iOS, when update_shortcuts rejects (for example because the snapshot write or IPC fails), the server PUT and removeCachedClipping have already succeeded, but awaiting the publication rejects api.deleteClipping. DeleteClip then reports “Couldn't delete” and skips its reload even though the item is already gone; the logging catch inside publishShortcuts does not alter the returned rejecting promise. Swallow or report this cache error separately so a best-effort Shortcuts update cannot turn a successful destructive request into an apparent failure.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Keep failed legacy batches out of later snapshots
When a legacy server returns 404 and one per-book request fails after another succeeds, the successful api.clippings(..., { syncShortcuts: false }) has already persisted its aggregate at lines 423-425. Promise.all suppresses the publication here but does not roll that write back, so the next Home startup or allProgress refresh calls syncShortcutsCache and publishes the failed batch's partial data; stage or commit these aggregates only after every fallback request succeeds.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Record empty legacy clipping batches
When an older server returns 404 for a zero-book account, the empty Promise.all succeeds but creates no per-book cache key, so this sync publishes clippings: null. ShortcutsSnapshot.findClippings then throws clippingsMissing even though the user opened Clippings and the empty collection was fully loaded; persist an explicit empty completion marker so this case returns an empty result.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Avoid building Shortcuts snapshots outside iOS
In Android and desktop Tauri builds, isApp is also true, while update_shortcuts explicitly discards its arguments outside iOS in app/src-tauri/src/widget.rs:56-57. Every library or clipping refresh therefore still scans and maps all offline data, JSON-stringifies a potentially multi-megabyte snapshot, and sends it over IPC only to drop it; gate this path by OS before constructing the snapshot.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Avoid duplicating complete clipping payloads
When a book's paginated clipping responses fit in localStorage but adding a second complete copy crosses the quota, the page writes at line 163 succeed and this aggregate write is silently dropped by keep. syncShortcutsCache ignores the ?cursor= page keys and scans only this aggregate key, so opening that book can succeed while Find Clippings remains missing or stale; store one representation or let snapshot generation consume the complete page set.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Invalidate clipping reads that predate a deletion
When a cached clipping is deleted while the screen's background clipping refresh is still pending, this pruning branch does not invalidate that read because both operations retain the same sessionVersion. A pre-delete GET can therefore resolve afterward, be persisted by call(), and republish the deleted row; if the deletion-triggered refresh then fails or finishes before that older response, Shortcuts keeps returning the deleted clipping until another successful refresh.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Purge removed books from the published snapshot
When Remove from library succeeds but the Book.jsx flow's subsequent reloadBooks() request fails, api.removeBook has left the saved PROGRESS value untouched, so this newly published book list continues exposing a book whose progress and clippings were deleted on the server. The stale book also keeps its cached clippings visible because ShortcutsSnapshot.findClippings uses the book list as its visibility set; prune the document's progress and clipping caches and republish immediately after a successful removal.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Dispatch offline state for aggregate clipping fallbacks
When a book already has an aggregate cache and connectivity drops after the shell's previous requests completed, offlineFallback: !complete suppresses call()'s offline event, and this catch returns the aggregate directly. The Book screen then renders stale passages while App.jsx's global “Offline. Showing what was saved” banner remains off, unlike the prior per-page fallback path; dispatch the offline event before returning this cache.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Store hub freshness atomically with its payload
When localStorage is near quota and a hub payload write succeeds but the new :saved-at insertion in keep() fails, all contains the fresh response while allAt remains null. Any older per-book aggregate has a positive savedAt, so this comparison treats it as newer and replaces that book's just-fetched hub rows; external edits or deletions can therefore remain in the Shortcuts snapshot even though Clippings loaded fresh data. Store the hub timestamp in the same record, or roll back the payload if its timestamp cannot be committed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Store book cache timestamps atomically
When localStorage has room to replace the library payload but not to add the new :saved-at entry (for example, an upgraded cache already near quota), this call writes the fresh books and then keep() silently drops the separate timestamp write. syncShortcutsCache consequently publishes a null or stale Cached At even after a successful online library refresh; embed freshness in the library record or roll back the payload if its timestamp cannot be committed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reconcile clipping caches after merging books
When a duplicate with cached clippings is merged, mergeDocuments rehomes those rows under the target, but api.merge never rewrites or invalidates the hub/per-book copies consumed here. If the ensuing library reload succeeds while the target clipping reload fails, the source book disappears from books while its cached clips still have the source document; ShortcutsSnapshot.findClippings filters them out, so Find Clippings silently loses the moved passages until another successful clipping fetch. Invalidate or remap both documents' cache entries on a successful merge.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retire deletions proven by complete hub refreshes
When a clipping is deleted by another client while the account has fewer than 5,000 clips, a fresh hub is authoritative and omits it, but this loop merely skips the older per-book record rather than reconciling it. If the account later grows to the 5,000-item cap, this line appends that retained record's unknown IDs and resurrects the deleted clip in Find Clippings. Prune per-book entries when an uncapped hub proves they are gone, or persist that negative knowledge before using capped fallbacks.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve unrelated hub clippings when merging books
When a user has loaded the all-book Clippings view but has not opened every individual book, merging any pair reaches this unconditional removal and discards the only cached copy for every unrelated book. Book.jsx then refreshes only the merge target's per-book clippings, so even if the post-merge requests succeed, the published snapshot omits all unrelated hub-only passages until the all-book Clippings screen is opened again; filter or remap only the two affected documents instead of deleting the hub.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Remove the merged source from the cached library
When a visible duplicate is merged and the Book.jsxonDone() library refresh cannot fetch fresh data (for example, connectivity drops after the POST), this branch republishes the unchanged progress cache: it invalidates clippings but never removes document from PROGRESS. The server has already migrated that source, yet Find Books and Get Book keep exposing the obsolete copy until another successful library refresh; prune or merge the source entry (or invalidate the book cache) before publishing.
publishShortcuts(null) returns the writes promise. That promise rejects when invoke('update_shortcuts') fails. The internal .catch in publishShortcuts only logs the error. It does not change the promise that is returned.
If the native bridge fails, await publishShortcuts(null) throws. The server-side delete has already succeeded and clearOffline(s) has already run. clearData then rejects, and the caller shows an error for an operation that worked. Settings may also skip its reload.
removeBook, merge and deleteClipping already use ?.catch(() => {}) for this reason. Use the same pattern here.
Proposed fix
- await publishShortcuts(null) // Settings reloads as soon as this resolves.+ await publishShortcuts(null)?.catch(() => {}) // Settings reloads as soon as this resolves.

Invalidate pending library reads after book edits
When a cached Book screen is opened while Home's background api.books request is still in flight, a successful StatusPicker or title/author edit starts a second reloadBooks; if that newer reload finishes first, the pre-edit GET can finish afterward and pass this readingVersion guard because setStatus and setInfo never advance the version. It then overwrites PROGRESS and republishes the old status or metadata to Shortcuts even though the UI kept the newer result, so successful book edits should invalidate older library reads (or library cache writes should otherwise be sequenced).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Patch cached books after successful edits
When a status or title/author PUT succeeds but connectivity drops before Book.jsx's follow-up library reload, that reload falls back to the unchanged PROGRESS record and succeeds. This helper only advances readingVersion, so allProgress republishes the pre-edit status or metadata to Find Books/Get Book (and the on-screen library) until a later online refresh; apply the confirmed response or patch to the cached book before publishing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reject stale overlapping clipping reads
When a per-book GET is already in flight and a later uncapped all-book GET observes a deletion from another client first, the older per-book response can arrive last. Stamping it with Date.now() at commit time makes syncShortcutsCache treat it as newer than the authoritative hub and republish the deleted clip; navigating from Book to Clippings leaves the old API request running even though useLoad ignores its UI result, so use a request generation/start ordering to prevent older reads from committing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Refresh the merge destination before republishing
When the merged source has farther progress than the destination and the post-merge reloadBooks() falls back offline, mergeDocuments has already moved the furthest progress and bumped the destination timestamp (src/models/merge.ts:102-124), but this branch only removes the source from cached progress. Shortcuts therefore republishes the destination's pre-merge percentage and Last Sync until a later online refresh; invalidate or update the destination cache along with pruning the source.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Await native snapshot removal before finishing logout
When a snapshot write is still queued or update_shortcuts rejects, this fire-and-forget clear lets logout() return and the app display the signed-out screen while shortcuts.json still contains the previous account. App Intents read that file independently, so running a Shortcut during that interval—or after the app is suspended before the queued clear completes—can still expose the signed-out user's books and clippings; await a successful native clear (and surface or retry failures) before completing the sign-out transition.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Await startup snapshot removal before showing sign-in
When iOS starts with no WebView session but a leftover shortcuts.json (for example after localStorage was reset or an earlier interrupted clear), this effect renders the sign-in screen and ignores the promise returned by the only native removal attempt. If update_shortcuts rejects, App Intents keep serving the previous account indefinitely with no retry or error path on that launch; although logout() now waits for removal, this separate no-session startup path should also await it or retain a retry state.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Ignore superseded library refreshes before publishing
When two api.books calls overlap, such as Home's initial refresh followed by a visibility or pull-to-refresh reload, a newer request can observe a reader update and finish before the older response. Both requests retain the same session and reading versions, so the older one still reaches these lines, overwrites the complete progress cache, assigns itself a later savedAt, and publishes stale books to Shortcuts even though useLoad ignores its UI result; add request-start sequencing for library reads as is already done for clipping reads.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-run legacy clipping fallback after books refresh
On a server without /api/v1/clippings, reopening Clippings from a stale cached library can start this fallback before Home's online library refresh discovers a newly synced book. Clippings.jsx:56 only keys its useLoad by session, so the changed books prop never reruns this map; the new per-book cache publication then treats clippings as available, and Find Clippings returns an empty result for the newly discovered book even though the user opened the all-book screen. Re-run or defer the legacy fallback until the refreshed book list is known before committing the snapshot.
On a first visit to a book with a slow or paginated clipping request, changing Reading status can finish first and this global increment makes the in-flight /clippings call fail assertReadingVersion. The status path only invokes Home's book/activity reload (Book.jsx:975 and App.jsx:409-412), while the clipping hook depends on document/revision (Book.jsx:196-200), so the section remains on “Reading data changed while loading” until navigation; use a library-only generation for info/status/date edits or explicitly reload clippings.
When a replace account import succeeds, api.importAccount calls this local-only cleanup (api.js:579-583) and Settings immediately reloads (Settings.jsx:815-819) without awaiting a native clear. If iOS suspends the app before the new Home effect publishes, or update_shortcuts rejects and the post-reload library fetch also fails, shortcuts.json continues exposing the pre-import books and clippings even though the server has replaced them; await publishShortcuts(null) on successful imports before resolving, as clearData does.

Adds read-only iOS Shortcuts actions for querying synced books and clippings:
Actions return structured entities and work offline using the app’s existing cached data. Cache timestamps remain unchanged during offline reads, signing out clears the native snapshot, and entity identifiers are scoped to the server and account.
Includes iOS build integration, usage documentation, and tests. Signing configuration and Personal Team build tooling are outside this PR.
Validation: 239 app tests, 12 Swift store checks, two Rust persistence checks, and the app build pass. iOS compilation and App Intents metadata extraction were also verified.
