Description

Adds agentsync inspect --agent <id> [--json] [--strict] as a deterministic, read-only and offline report of AgentSync-managed configuration. The report shows configured targets, projected destinations, observed filesystem state, MCP declarations and diagnostics. It redacts sensitive values and clearly states that it does not represent full provider runtime-effective configuration.

Also includes the already-present DALLAY-694 skill inventory review fixes from the preserved local changes.

Related Linear issue: DALLAY-696 (not a GitHub issue).

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • This change requires a documentation update

How Has This Been Tested?

  • cargo test --all-features --quiet — all suites passed (803 library, 207 binary, 137 integration, plus standalone test binaries; ignored tests noted in output).
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings
  • pnpm run docs:build — passed; existing warnings remain for missing/empty i18n and 404 content.
  • Inspect JSON contract tests cover deterministic output, read-only behavior, secret redaction, strict exit behavior, missing/broken sources, MCP overwrite behavior and disabled MCP generation.
  • Existing status --json compatibility tests passed.

Test Configuration:

  • OS/Distribution: macOS (local development environment)
  • Rust version: repository toolchain, Rust 1.89+
  • Node/pnpm version: repository Node 24.14.0 and pnpm
  • Test command used: commands listed above
  • Environment variables: none required
  • Reproduction steps: run the checks above from the repository root

Checklist:

  • Code follows project style guidelines
  • Self-review completed
  • Documentation updated
  • Tests added for the new feature
  • Unit and integration tests pass locally
  • No new warnings (the docs build reports existing i18n/404 warnings)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added inspect to show an assistant’s managed configuration, filesystem status, MCP details, and diagnostics in human-readable or JSON format. Reports are deterministic, redact sensitive values, and do not modify files or contact external services.
    • Added --strict to return a failure when the report contains error-level diagnostics.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved skill inventory error reporting, skipped live symlinked skill directories, and redacted credentials and tokens from displayed provenance.
    • Preserved YAML values such as yes as strings in skill manifest descriptions.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance and reference documentation for inspection reports and skill inventory output.

The change adds a read-only inspect command for AgentSync-managed configuration and destination state. It also exposes destination status collection, updates skill inventory reporting, and switches skill-related YAML parsing to serde-saphyr.

Changes: Resolved Configuration Inspection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Report contract and schema
.agents/sdd/specs/resolved-agent-configuration/adr.md, src/inspect.rs, website/docs/src/content/docs/reference/inspect-output.mdx
The provisional ADR and report schema define the JSON envelope, item states, MCP rules, redaction boundaries, and exit behavior.
Destination status collection
src/status.rs, src/commands/status.rs, src/lib.rs, src/inspect.rs
The public status module collects and validates destination entries. Inspection uses status and filesystem observations to report item states, diagnostics, and paths.
Configuration, MCP, and plugin resolution
src/inspect.rs, src/plugins.rs
The resolver reports configured targets, destination interactions, and eligible plugin contributions. It classifies or redacts MCP server values.
CLI output, tests, and documentation
src/commands/inspect.rs, src/commands/mod.rs, src/main.rs, tests/contracts/test_inspect_output.rs, tests/all_tests.rs, website/docs/src/content/docs/guides/inspect.mdx, website/docs/src/content/docs/reference/cli.mdx
The CLI supports agent selection, JSON output, and strict mode. Contract tests cover report contents, diagnostics, and redaction. Documentation describes command usage and report behavior.

Skill Inventory Reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inventory scanning and provenance
src/commands/skill.rs, tests/contracts/test_skill_list_output.rs, website/docs/src/content/docs/guides/skills.mdx, website/docs/src/content/docs/reference/cli.mdx
Inventory errors distinguish invalid registries from unreadable scans. Source classification includes marketplace metadata, live symlink entries are skipped, and qualifying provenance is redacted. Tests and documentation describe these results.

Skill YAML Parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parser migration and validation
Cargo.toml, src/skills/detect.rs, src/skills/manifest.rs, tests/unit/manifest.rs, tests/unit/mod.rs
Workspace and manifest YAML parsing use serde-saphyr with strict boolean handling. A unit test checks that description: yes remains the string "yes".

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b7410

Inspect can print credentials supplied in flag-style MCP arguments. Fix that exposure before merging; the diagnostic reference also needs a small update.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b7410

The new JSON report can expose credentials embedded in URL-valued command arguments. Its offline, read-only design limits execution and filesystem risk, but does not prevent those secrets from reaching captured or shared output.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new JSON report emits credential-bearing URLs unchanged when supplied inside a non-sensitive flag such as --endpoint=https://user:password@example.invalid/?token=value. The flag branch returns before URL redaction, violating the report's credential-redaction boundary and exposing secrets to downstream output readers.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified disclosure affects literal credentials already readable in the selected project's MCP declarations when inspection JSON is captured or shared. It requires inspection to be invoked; no automatic transmission or privilege escalation is established. Downstream exposure depends on who can read the output and the authority of any disclosed credential.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A configured --endpoint=URL argument reaches redact_args as a string. Because endpoint is not a sensitive key, the flag branch returns the original argument without invoking redact_url. McpServerReport.args is then serialized to stdout. Dedicated URL fields, positional URLs, and sensitive outer flags are protected, but those controls do not cover this representation. Strict mode does not prevent disclosure because serialization precedes its exit decision.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new plugin inspection path reads existing local sources or cached Git snapshots without invoking restoration. It validates selected lock entries, approvals, discovered content, and lock consistency before returning declarations. Missing or invalid plugin state becomes diagnostics, and pending MCP contributions are not included as approved configuration.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Contract tests assert repeated-output determinism, absence of representative secrets, and absence of projected destinations. Their inspected redaction cases cover sensitive flag assignments and the dedicated URL field, but do not establish protection for URLs nested inside non-sensitive flag assignments.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make redaction representation-independent: extract argument values, apply URL credential and sensitive-query redaction before serialization, and retain sensitive-key handling. Validate the same credential-bearing URL across positional, split-flag, and inline-assignment forms.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat: add read-only agent configuration inspect" follows Conventional Commits with the allowed type "feat" and imperative mood. It matches the main change, which adds the read-only agentsync inspect command.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the new agentsync inspect --agent &lt;id&gt; [--json] [--strict] command, its read-only and offline report, redaction behavior, and test results. It also mentions the skill inventory fixes and ADR status, which match the changeset.

Full details: Rust Correctness And Safety

Explanation

The prior path-boundary safety failure remains unresolved. resolve_configuration calls collect_agent_status_entries at src/inspect.rs:169 before validation. src/status.rs:111-138 joins raw target and module-map paths, and src/status.rs:222-383 probes them with symlink_metadata and child inspection. src/inspect.rs:248-298 then joins raw sources and destinations and probes them with exists and symlink_metadata. Config::load only deserializes paths (src/config.rs:298-320), and the existing Linker::ensure_safe_destination is not called by these readers. No inspect/status path-boundary validator or traversal and symlinked-ancestor regression tests were added. Existing plugin-path validation does not protect target, module-map, nested-glob, or MCP inspection paths.

Resolution

Add a shared read-only path validator and invoke it before status collection and before every inspection filesystem probe. Reject absolute paths, parent traversal, and symlinked ancestors for target sources, destinations, module-map mappings, nested-glob roots, and relevant MCP paths, or return a safe diagnostic without probing outside the project root. Add regression tests for absolute paths, .. paths, and symlinked ancestors. Retain and test the existing Git snapshot symlink guard.

Full details: Cli Contract Compatibility

Explanation

The CLI contract compatibility issue remains unresolved. This PR changes the existing skill list --json v1 error response: the base emitted diagnostics[0] as "registry_invalid: installed skill registry could not be read or parsed", while the head emits the unprefixed message and adds diagnostic_code, with schema_version still 1 (src/commands/skill.rs). The contract test was changed to expect the new value rather than preserving the old v1 response (tests/contracts/test_skill_list_output.rs), and the documentation describes the new representation without a migration (website/docs/src/content/docs/guides/skills.mdx, reference/cli.mdx). The new inventory_unreadable response also extends the v1 contract. The inspect implementation includes DiagnosticCode::DisabledAgent, but the inspect output reference omits disabled-agent from its documented code list.

Resolution

Either preserve the v1 registry error representation, including the exact existing diagnostic string, while adding any new fields, or change the schema version and document the migration. Add a compatibility test that asserts the prior v1 response. Document the emitted disabled-agent inspect diagnostic code in the matching inspect reference documentation.

Semgrep found 6 tainted-path findings:

🟠 High severity issue identified in your code:

The application builds a file path from potentially untrusted data, which can lead to a path traversal vulnerability. An attacker can manipulate the path which the application uses to access files. If the application does not validate user input and sanitize file paths, sensitive files such as configuration or user data can be accessed, potentially creating or overwriting files. To prevent this vulnerability, validate and sanitize any input that is used to create references to file paths. Also, enforce strict file access controls. For example, choose privileges allowing public-facing applications to access only the required files.

Sensitive Data Exposure

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Moderate
CWE: CWE-200 — Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor

Redact URL credentials in flag-style arguments.

The new redact_url call covers only positional arguments (Lines 771-775). The earlier flag branch still returns --name=<url> unchanged when name is not a sensitive key.

Trace for --database-url=postgres://admin:S3cret@db/app:

  1. flag.split_once('=') returns the key database-url. is_sensitive_key returns false.
  2. flag.split_once(':') returns the key database-url=postgres. is_sensitive_key returns false.
  3. The branch returns arg.clone(), so the password reaches stdout.

The same path leaks --url=https://host/x?token=abc. This breaks the documented contract that sensitive argument values and URL query values are redacted. The report goes to stdout and can end up in CI logs.

Apply redact_url to a flag value that contains ://. Do this before the split_once(':') check.

🔒 Proposed fix
                 let (key, value) = flag.split_once('=').unwrap_or((flag, ""));
                 if is_sensitive_key(key) && !value.is_empty() {
                     return format!("--{key}=<redacted>");
                 }
+                if !value.is_empty() && value.contains("://") {
+                    return format!("--{key}={}", redact_url(value));
+                }
                 if let Some((key, _)) = flag.split_once(':')

Add canary tests in tests/contracts/test_inspect_output.rs for --database-url=postgres://user:CANARY_FLAG_URL_SECRET@host/db and --endpoint=https://host/x?token=CANARY_FLAG_QUERY_SECRET.

🟡 Minor · Use the entry's own destination in the broken-symlink diagnostic. · inspect.rs:303

src/inspect.rs:303
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the entry's own destination in the broken-symlink diagnostic.

For module-map, portable_destination now holds the first mapping's destination (Lines 207-212). This loop runs once per mapping entry. If the second mapping's symlink is broken, the diagnostic reports the first mapping's path. A user cannot tell which destination is broken.

Use the destination of the current status entry.

🐛 Proposed fix
-                        path: Some(portable_destination.clone()),

+                        )),

Add a contract test with two module-map mappings where only the second symlink is broken.

🟠 High severity blocking issue identified in your code:
The application builds a file path from potentially untrusted data, which can lead to a path traversal vulnerability. An attacker can manipulate the path which the application uses to access files. If the application does not validate user input and sanitize file paths, sensitive files such as configuration or user data can be accessed, potentially creating or overwriting files. To prevent this vulnerability, validate and sanitize any input that is used to create references to file paths. Also, enforce strict file access controls. For example, choose privileges allowing public-facing applications to access only the required files.
