build: explicit interpreter, drop --find-interpreter - #1496
build: supported python versions are now encoded in 1 place, toml classifiers
build: check_version_sync also on python versions + CI
ci: pypi upload to trusted publisher
ci: pytests don't fail fast
Python version metadata and CI workflows now specify supported versions and check version consistency. Test matrix fail-fast settings and package publishing workflow settings also changed.
Changes: CI and package releases
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Python version metadata and checks pyproject.toml, scripts/check_version_sync.py, .pre-commit-config.yaml
Added Python 3.12–3.14 classifiers and checks that compare supported versions with Pixi, Planemo, Read the Docs, pytest, and wheel workflow settings. The pre-commit hook now runs for the relevant workflows and script.
Test and wheel build matrices .github/workflows/test_pytest.yml, .github/workflows/wheels*.yml
Test matrix jobs disable fail-fast. Linux, musllinux, and macOS wheel builds explicitly target Python 3.12, 3.13, and 3.14.
TestPyPI and PyPI jobs specify environments and grant id-token: write permission. Their publish steps no longer provide API-token passwords.
Change: Other
Merge Risk: Low · up to 656a0
The version check can miss future configuration drift. The change is mergeable with follow-up on those checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 656a0
Publishing remains separated from builds, and production uploads remain tag-only. No introduced security vulnerability was established. However, the new authentication path depends on registry trust settings and deployment-environment restrictions that could not be verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The sensitive outcomes are package uploads to PyPI and TestPyPI, with downstream exposure through consumers installing published artifacts. The exact registry projects and publication authority depend on external publisher bindings that were not available.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The production workflow accepts pull requests, but its release job requires a tag or manual dispatch, and the upload step independently requires a tag. Preview publication is triggered by master pushes or manual dispatch, not pull-request events. These repository gates are unchanged by the authentication migration.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The upload configuration retains its pre-existing retry approach through skip-existing. It does not establish atomic publication, content equality for skipped files, or rollback after partial upload; no PR-introduced weakening of those properties was established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before relying on the migration, verify both registries' trusted-publisher bindings and both GitHub environments' protection rules against the intended repository, workflow, environment and release actors or refs. Confirm a recovery procedure for authentication failure or partial publication. These are rollout checks, not observed misconfigurations.

Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files. (5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Check every pytest matrix.
A YAML block-style pixi-env list does not match this regex. If one job uses that syntax and omits a version, the other inline matrix still makes this check pass. Enumerate each job’s matrix, or reject matrices that the parser cannot inspect.

Update the pytest `pixi-env` matrix check that uses `_grep` so it inspects every
job’s matrix, including YAML block-style lists, and compares each against
`envs`; if a matrix format cannot be parsed, fail the check instead of allowing
another matrix to mask it.

Check the Python version inside each Pixi environment.
This checks environment names only. If py314 selects a feature with python = "3.13.*", the check passes and CI tests Python 3.13 twice. Resolve each environment’s features and compare their Python requirements too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the `pixi_envs` check to resolve the features selected by each Pixi
environment and compare their Python requirements with the environment’s
declared version, rather than relying only on environment names. Ensure
mismatches such as `py314` selecting Python 3.13 are reported.

Check every wheel build step.
A valid argument order such as --out dist --release -i python3.12 does not match this regex. Other matching builds let the check pass, even though that platform omits the 3.13 and 3.14 wheels. Inspect every maturin build step and reject any step that cannot be parsed.

Update the builds extraction around _grep to inspect every maturin build step
and parse its arguments regardless of whether -i appears before or after
--release. Reject any build step whose arguments cannot be parsed instead of
allowing other matching steps to make the check pass.
