This allows tests to know when services are ready/pauses "docker compose up"'s return until services are actually listening, fixing CI failures like: https://github.com/edgcpp/compiler/actions/runs/39886789630/job/120196711835

This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.

Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting other tasks.

In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.

Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Forge services now expose health checks and can receive webhooks through the shared service endpoint.
    • Publisher updates are retained during AcknowlEDG outages and applied after reconnection.
  • Improvements
    • Command output and incoming build data are bounded to reduce resource use; streamed output remains available.
    • Failed requests are reported to the relevant reviewer when their identity is available.
  • Configuration
    • Configure the service endpoint with ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_SERVICE_BIND; enable webhook receipt with ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_WEBHOOKS=1. The previous webhook bind setting is no longer supported.

This allows tests to know when services are ready/pauses "docker compose up"'s
return until services are actually listening.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates Forge service hosting, publisher state and request queues, process-pool dispatch, runner connections, input limits, and reviewer-scoped error handling. It also updates deployment configuration, documentation, and tests for these changes.

Changes: Forge service lifecycle and request handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared serving and service configuration
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{config.py, local.py, service.py, serving.py, webhooks.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/{compose.yaml, README.md, run-dev-oss-repo.sh}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py, test_containers.py, test_state.py}
Service endpoints use shared Quart serving and health checks. Configuration and deployment settings use the service bind and optional webhook flag.
Database-backed publisher state
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{db/store.py, processor.py, publisher/__init__.py, publisher/client.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py, fakes.py, test_publisher.py, test_state.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/SANDBOXING.md
Publisher clients load review data from the store. Processing updates stored sections before syncing by review ID, delists before teardown, and records or refunds processing attempts.
Queued publisher and batch session
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/publisher/{acknowledg.py, protocol.py, server.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{test_acknowledg_integration.py, test_publisher.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/SANDBOXING.md
The publisher server queues sync, delist, and prune operations for a shared publishing task. The task applies operations to a batch session and continues after individual item errors.
Queued process-pool dispatch
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/publisher/{pool.py, pool_process.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{test_pool.py, test_acknowledg_integration.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/SANDBOXING.md
The pool dispatches queued work to per-process dispatchers and matches replies by request ID. Tests cover cancellation, process reuse, and oversized source requests.
Runner connections and output handling
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/runner/{client.py, server.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py, test_containers.py, test_runner.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/SANDBOXING.md
Runner clients use a reconnecting WebSocket connection and retain bounded command output. Runner servers expose Quart blueprints with health checks.
Workspace and CI input bounds
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{processor.py, workspace.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_safety.py
Workspace and processor input handling limits patterns, output, archive contents, metadata, and combined test-ID files.
Reviewer-scoped request and error replies
dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/client/{__init__.py, shared.py, websocket.py, bench/__init__.py, test/__init__.py}, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/publisher/pool.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg/server/acknowledg_server/__init__.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_symlinks.py
Client handlers skip requests without a reviewer ID and attach IDs to identifiable failures. The server forwards valid provider errors to the matching reviewer.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d45dc

Several failure paths in the new publisher, pool and workspace code can hang or stop the service: a pool process failing to start, a cancelled git diff, a publisher fallback error, or a publisher closing its connection right after the handshake. Fix these before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d45dc

The deployment preserves its main isolation boundaries and adds useful input limits. However, recovery failures can now interrupt the whole service or strand shared request-processing capacity. A previously existing resource-amplification finding also remains; the new limits reduce its exposure but do not eliminate it.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A transient worker-start failure can permanently remove shared request-processing capacity. The new persistent dispatcher catches PoolError during replacement, but socket or subprocess creation can raise OSError instead. That terminates the dispatcher without setting restart backoff. Admission checks only starting_later, so requests can continue to queue for lost capacity; if all dispatchers are lost, they wait without reaching a worker deadline. Previously, replacement was attempted by subsequent requests. This weakens failure containment for the pool serving untrusted reviewer work; an attacker-controlled trigger for the operating-system failure itself was not established.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A connection loss during the publisher's initial settings send can now terminate the whole Forge service instead of causing a reconnect. The send wrapper raises PublisherUnavailableError, which escapes the new connection iterator body and its cleanup-only connection handler. Because publisher.run belongs to the service TaskGroup, its failure cancels polling, processing, and ingress tasks. The base reconnect loop caught such exceptions. Normal receive-side disconnections still reconnect, so the regression is specifically the initialization failure path; eventual recovery depends on external supervision.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Resource exhaustion during PR or CI-derived workspace processing can affect other reviews handled by the same Forge service, rather than only the originating review. The checked deployment limits the service to 2 GiB of memory and separates publisher and runner processes; the inspected path does not establish cross-deployment access or credential disclosure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained denial-of-service finding concerns long parent paths expanded into multiple sparse-checkout patterns from PR or CI-derived input. The merge base already performed this expansion without the new bounds. The PR reduces accumulation and input size but leaves byte amplification possible; no introduced or widened exposure was established, so this remains a pre-existing security condition rather than an active PR architecture concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Webhook verification still precedes parsing and queueing, with a 25 MiB delivery limit. The injected GitHub provider checks a body HMAC; GitLab checks the configured secret token using constant-time comparison. Both provider implementations are unchanged in the full PR comparison. Deliveries identify state to refresh rather than directly supplying authoritative review state.
  • observed — Runner authority remains role-defined: executable identity, argument paths, working directory, environment paths, and timeout are checked before execution. Listener trust remains network-based, not newly authenticated. Command processes retain process-group termination on completion, timeout, or cancellation, and connection loss cancels that connection's tasks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Artifact handling preserves layered containment: provider downloads receive a compressed-size limit, extraction checks escaping paths and symlinks, and decompressed writes spend a byte budget. Staging cleanup is attempted on failure. These controls constrain untrusted content but do not by themselves establish trusted artifact authorship or interruption-safe completion of background extraction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound total generated pattern bytes and per-input path expansion before allocating each batch. This would address the pre-existing amplification condition beyond the new filename and distinct-pattern limits.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title says the PR improves deployment stability by adding health check endpoints. The changeset adds a shared Quart/Hypercorn serving module with a GET /healthz endpoint (HEALTH_PATH), wires health checks into compose.yaml, and updates tests to use it. The PR objectives name health checks as the primary goal, so the title matches the main change. It omits the other objectives (Quart refactor, process-pool cleanup, input caps), which the title does not need to cover. The title ends with an empty bracket pair '[]', which is noise and should be removed.

Add a cancellation test for _communicate_bounded.

The new test covers only normal completion and the over-limit kill path. The cancellation path is the one that can hang. Add a test that cancels _communicate_bounded while yes runs. It must assert that the task finishes within a short timeout and that process.returncode is set. The test fails until the finally block kills the process.

Handle failures of the rebuild fallback per review.

review_identity includes the pull request title in the rich name. A title that makes the name exceed MAX_RICH_NAME_LENGTH causes decode_review to raise ValueError. The server returns {'error': 'failed', ...}, and _request raises RuntimeError.

The fallback runs outside the per-review exception handler. This exception can end sync_all before _connected.set(). The websocket remains open, so wait_connected() can remain blocked.

Catch fallback failures, log them, and mark the review dirty. Re-raise PublisherUnavailableError so the outer handler can retry the connection.

Catch PublisherUnavailableError from _run_connection in run.

_run_connection sends the init message inside its try block. _Connection.send converts ConnectionClosed into PublisherUnavailableError. After the finally cleanup, that exception leaves _run_connection and run(). run() does not catch it, so the exception ends the PublisherClient.run task. This task runs in the service TaskGroup, so the whole service stops.

The trigger is a publisher server that closes the socket right after the handshake, for example during a restart. The connect iterator only retries failures of the connection attempt itself. It does not retry errors raised in the loop body.

Catch the error in run and log it. The loop then reconnects.

A non-PoolError start failure kills the slot's dispatcher permanently.

_dispatch catches only PoolError around _replace. _start can also raise OSError from socket.socketpair() or asyncio.create_subprocess_exec. Examples are EMFILE, a fork failure, or a missing interpreter.

An OSError leaves _dispatch and ends the dispatcher task, and nothing awaits the task, so the error goes unreported. The slot is never served again.

The OSError path also leaves slot.not_before unchanged, so starting_later() stays false. If every dispatcher dies this way, the fast-fail in answer() never fires. Every later request is queued and waits forever. The section handler loop blocks on it.

Treat OSError like a failed start: log it, apply the backoff, and keep the dispatcher alive.

Update the _dispatch handler around _replace to catch OSError as well as
PoolError. For OSError start failures, log the exception, update
slot.failed_starts and slot.not_before using the existing backoff policy, then
wait and continue so the dispatcher remains available; preserve the current
PoolError handling.

Bound the total pattern size. patterns_for_test limits only the filename. A long directory is repeated for each dotted base name, so MAX_PATTERNS does not bound pattern bytes. The 16 MiB diff limit and 4 MiB MAX_TEST_IDS_BYTES limit do not impose a total pattern-size limit.

Update patterns_for_test to bound the encoded full test path as well as the
filename; return an empty list when either limit is exceeded. Define and use a
path-size limit so long directory components cannot produce oversized patterns.

Kill the process in finally. Cancellation can hang forever.

If the task is cancelled while it awaits process.stdout.read(...), finally runs await process.wait() and the process is still running. Nothing reads stdout any more. Once the pipe buffer fills, git diff blocks on its write and never exits. The cancelled task then never finishes.

Workspaces.diff calls this while it holds self.lock(repository). A hung task keeps that lock. Every later git operation on that repository then waits on the lock. Service shutdown and wait_for timeouts hit the same hang.

Kill the process in finally when it has not exited.

Update the subprocess cleanup in the `finally` block of `Workspaces.diff` so it
kills the process if it has not exited before awaiting `process.wait()`. Handle
the possibility that the process has already disappeared, and reuse or add the
needed import without changing unrelated cleanup behavior.
