feat: pause and resume voiceover recording - #1495
Adds Pause / Resume to the editor's existing voiceover recording bar. Pausing freezes the microphone recorder, preview and elapsed recording time; resuming continues the same take from the same picture. Paused time is excluded from the saved duration and the original timeline anchor is retained.
Stop saves the take while paused; Cancel, Escape and unmount discard it and release the stream. Transport and seeking cannot move the playhead while paused. Resume failures leave the take paused for retry, and a pending preview play() cannot restart recording after Stop.
Adds four strings in all 15 locales (AI-assisted translations; non-English wording would benefit from native review). Uses the existing MediaRecorder and recording UI, with no new dependency or native changes.
Follows the scope proposed in the issue. That proposal has not received maintainer feedback yet; this PR provides the implementation for review.

No attachment uploaded. The desktop pass verified the bar changes from Pause · Stop · Cancel to Paused 6.5s · Resume · Stop · Cancel, with the hint “Recording and video are paused. Resume to continue.”
Both npx tsc --noEmit and npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit passed.
npm run lint: no errors; 36 existing warnings, none in the changed files.
npm run i18n:check passed.
npx vite build passed.
Regression tests cover repeated pause/resume, exclusion of paused time from the timeline limit, saving/cancelling while paused, Escape/unmount cleanup, resume rejection/retry, and Stop racing with pending resume.
Partial macOS desktop pass through real OS input in an isolated dev profile: imported a 60 s synthetic video, recorded to 6.5 s, paused and confirmed the preview/timer stayed fixed (including Space), resumed from the same point, paused at 15.6 s, and stopped. One track was saved at 0–15.6 s. The real MediaRecorder WebM decodes to 748,800 samples at 48 kHz = 15.6 s, excluding the pause. Recorded in the manual E2E results log.
The Chromium fake microphone was silent, so audible microphone content/physical devices were not verified. Windows/Linux and export were not exercised in this scoped pass.
Review follow-up
Commit f2e3c5a9 blocks ruler/empty-lane scrubs before local playhead or deferred time writes, using a synchronous seek permission from the shell. Resume pending state is now separate from save busy state and cleared on Stop; a failed save cannot leave Pause disabled on the next take. Three new regression cases failed before the fix and pass after it. The full suite passes (5,259 passed, 1 skipped). Both TypeScript checks, Biome (36 existing warnings) and Vite build pass. A second scoped macOS computer-use pass verified paused ruler clicks stay at 9.5 s and seeking works again after Cancel; native drag input could not run because the tool returned noWindowsAvailable, while the pointer-drag unit tests passed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Voiceover recording can be paused and resumed with clear status indicators. Pausing also pauses video playback, and recording time excludes pauses.
Voiceover controls and guidance are available in supported languages.
Bug Fixes
Seeking and playback controls no longer disrupt a paused recording, and seeking works again after a take ends or is canceled.
Stopping or closing a take prevents pending playback or resume actions from restarting it.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Voiceover recording now supports pausing and resuming. The dialog tracks active recording time, while the editor coordinates preview playback and timeline controls with the recording state. Tests, translations, and manual test results cover the behavior.

Recording pause, resume, and elapsed time src/components/ai-edition/v4/AddAudioLayerDialog.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/v4/AddAudioLayerDialog.test.tsx, src/i18n/locales/*/timeline.json, technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md
The dialog adds pause and resume controls and tracks active recording time. Tests cover pause-time accounting, stopping or discarding paused takes, resume failures, and pending resumes. Translations and manual test results are added.
Editor playback and seek coordination src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.voiceover.test.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/v4/V4Timeline.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/v4/V4Timeline.geometry.test.tsx
The editor tracks voiceover sessions and blocks seeking and playback toggles while paused. The timeline checks seek permission and invalidates queued scrub updates when the seek epoch changes. Tests cover paused controls, placement, and playback that resolves after a take stops.
The preview components pass a cancellation callback to VirtualPreview, which clears pending playback intent. A test checks that cancellation prevents playback after a source change.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1236: Changes voiceover start-position capture and placement, the same recording-time playback path affected by pause and resume.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1400: Adds playback preservation for queued cross-source seeks. This change cancels that pending playback intent when a voiceover take stops.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 17fd6
Voiceover pause and resume looks functionally sound, with seeking blocked while paused and pending playback cancelled on Pause and Stop. One idle-close test may not establish playback before asserting that close preserves it; this is a minor test-quality item.

The mocked video remains paused after toggle-preview because previewPlay does not update paused. Make the mock’s play and pause methods update playback state, then assert that the preview is playing before and after closing the idle voiceover bar.

Thanks for keeping this up to date @swording-k! One note: this repo merges by rebase only, so the merge commit from main blocks merging. Could you rebase the branch on main instead (git rebase upstream/main + force-push)? The two open CodeRabbit threads are still worth a look too.
