Follow-up to #1840's original scope, which master has since covered: per-model aliasing landed in acf6b6e, so this PR was reduced to the one defect that remains.

_aliases still builds the alias with chr(65 + len(letters)), which walks off the end of the alphabet: the 27th model in a redacted report came out as Model [, then Model \, Model ]. Reachable by merging enough dates -- three models over nine days is 27 distinct runs.

Replaced with base-26 letters: Model A .. Model Z, then Model AA, Model AB. Covered by test_redact_alias_survives_past_twenty_six_models.

📝 Walkthrough

Redacted reports now assign spreadsheet-style aliases to distinct models in first-seen order. Run labels preserve non-model text when possible, and duplicate labels receive numeric suffixes. Run model fields and comparison keys use the corresponding aliases and resolved labels.

Changes: Redacted report aliases

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model aliases and redacted output
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/reporting/html_report.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_html_report.py
Redaction assigns aliases by model identity and substitutes model names in run labels, processing longer names first. It retains other label content when possible, uses a bare alias when no model name matches, and adds numeric suffixes to duplicate labels. Run model fields and comparison keys use the resolved aliases and labels. Tests cover dates, source-prefixed and bare keys, overlapping names, cleared provider names, and aliases beyond Z.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~12 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 60540

No material issue remains that should delay merging. An unusual model-name collision could mislabel a redacted run.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bb1e3

Reports marked as redacted can now retain sensitive input-file labels. The demonstrated exposure concerns information embedded in generated reports; who receives those reports remains unknown.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: Redaction now preserves arbitrary filename-derived source labels in merged report keys. Sensitive customer or infrastructure identifiers in those labels therefore survive into HTML marked as redacted, weakening the previous confidentiality boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated disclosure can affect source labels across all runs included in a generated merged report and anyone able to read that HTML. Actual recipients, tenant reach, and distribution controls are not established; the evidence does not justify a broader service-wide exposure claim.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained information-disclosure finding is supported by the filename-to-key-to-HTML trace. A sensitive filename prefix survives replacement of the current model name. The parent implementation discarded the complete label, so this disclosure path is introduced by the PR; exploitation depends on sensitive labels being included and the output reaching an unintended reader.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The relevant boundary is conversion of internal report metadata into audience-facing redacted output. The CLI supplies the redaction choice correctly, but redaction preserves non-model key content without validating that it is an approved date or other public label. Tests excluding model and provider names do not establish confidentiality of arbitrary filename prefixes.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent public chronology separately from filename-derived source identity. Preserve validated public dates or opaque source aliases rather than arbitrary filename text, and add confidentiality cases covering sensitive source labels while retaining run/comparison alignment.

Good catch — fixed in 60540bc, and it was a real leak rather than a style point.

Reproduced before fixing. merge_docs prefixes the source filename onto the run label, and a filename can name a different model than the run it labels:

{"gpt-5.5-baseline.json · gpt-5.2": {"model": "gpt-5.2"},
 "gpt-5.5-baseline.json · gpt-5.5": {"model": "gpt-5.5"}}

gave

'gpt-5.5-baseline.json · Model A' ← gpt-5.5 survives redaction
'Model B-baseline.json · Model B' ← and the same name is mangled here

So two faults from one cause: a real model name reaching a redacted report (your CWE-200), and the two rows disagreeing on the filename, which breaks the column comparison the alias fix was meant to restore.

Now every known model name is substituted, longest first as you suggested, so gpt-5 cannot match inside gpt-5.2. Both rows render Model B-baseline.json · Model <X> — no real name survives, and the filename redacts consistently, which is the right outcome for a filename that names a model.

Two tests added, both verified to fail before the change: one asserting no model name appears anywhere in the redacted blob for the cross-leak input, one for the prefix collision.

1321 passed, ruff clean.

chr(65 + n) walked off the end of the alphabet: the 27th model in a redacted
report came out as `Model [`, then `Model \\`, `Model ]`. Reachable by merging
enough dates -- three models over nine days is 27 distinct runs.

Rebased onto master and cut down. Master already carries per-model aliasing (acf6b6e), which is what the first thread covered, so the PR now holds only the alias overflow past Model Z. Title and description updated.
