ci(proofs): type-check the Agda corpus here and quarantine its trust base (fixes #4) - #18
Conversation
…base (issue #4) The verifying job for this repo's proofs was stranded in hyperpolymath/standards (echidna-verify.yml, job 'Agda — lol/proofs'), where the corpus eviction turned it into an advisory presence-guard no-op. Result: nothing anywhere type-checked proofs/theories. The corpus did not compile, which is why the ported job had to stay advisory. This change makes it a hard gate by first making the corpus worth gating: - Rebuild information_theory.agda as three modules with an enforced trust layering: InformationTheory.Foundations (total, postulate-free, --safe), InformationTheory.Axioms (the single non-safe quarantine for postulates — Agda's --safe rejects postulate by design), and InformationTheory (--safe theorems + public surface). Module names now match file names, so `agda --safe` can actually be pointed at them. - Kill the 2026-04 soundness bug the audit flagged: per-postulate where-clause _>=_/_<=_ relations were vacuously satisfiable. Orders are now the computational T (.. <=b ..) on the float comparison primitives, and Distribution carries real range + normalisation hypotheses, so entropy/KL/JSD statements are true-as-stated instead of trivially inhabited. - Discharge the two provable obligations from POSTULATE-AUDIT Phase 2: entropy-nonneg and js-symmetric are now proven from four IEEE-754 ffi-fact axioms (never from the conjectures); kl-nonneg and js-bounded stay tagged, named conjectures in the trust base. - proofs/trust-base.json + scripts/audit-trust-base.py gate the trust base: exact axiom set/class budget, quarantine exhaustiveness (every .agda file registered), postulates confined to Axioms.agda, and a regression guard for the vacuous-relation shape. Bidirectional drift fails: adding AND silently deleting a postulate breaks the gate. - .github/workflows/echidna-verify.yml ports the standards job with issue #4's notes applied: no workflow-level paths filter on pull_request (job-level detect so a skipped job still emits a check run), fail-closed non-empty corpus assertion, apt agda + stdlib pinned to the runner, stdlib-probe so a missing library fails loudly, hard-fail type-check (not advisory), pinned actions ⊆ estate actions.lock, log artifact upload, weekly re-verification. - Justfile: prove-agda / prove-audit / prove-check-all mirror CI locally; .gitlab-ci.yml proof-verification executes the same check (advisory on the mirror by design); echidna.toml file lists match reality and ci.fail_on_unverified flips true; proofs/README.adoc now describes the tree that exists; POSTULATE-AUDIT updated with the remediation ledger. - Around line 76-81: Update the change-detection step that assigns `changed`
from `git diff` so a diff failure sets `proofs=true` and exits the step
successfully; do not treat a failed diff as an empty change list. Preserve the
existing path matching for successful diffs.
Review comments at @.gitignore:
- Around line 69-71: Update the Agda ignore patterns in .gitignore: replace the
overly broad *.ai and invalid *.agda-ir/ patterns with patterns that ignore
*.agdai interface files and the _build/ directory.
Review comments at @proofs/echidna.toml:
- Around line 19-21: Align the Agda version references across the CI jobs:
update the package pins in `.gitlab-ci.yml` and
`.github/workflows/echidna-verify.yml` to matching available versions, or revise
their comments to accurately describe each job’s installed versions. Keep the
`echidna.toml` toolchain note consistent with the resulting configuration.
Review comments at @proofs/POSTULATE-AUDIT.adoc:
- Around line 32-33: Update the `mul-sign` row in the audit to match the revised
axiom, accounting for the `a = 0`, `b = −∞` case rather than recording the
current statement as true.
Review comments at @proofs/theories/InformationTheory.agda:
- Around line 88-90: Update the `plogp-nonneg` application in the `sumF-nonneg`
proof to pass index `i` explicitly to `lower d` and `upper d`, ensuring both
bounds use the same index as the lookup.
Review comments at @proofs/theories/InformationTheory/Axioms.agda:
- Around line 47-49: Restrict the `mul-sign` axiom in `Axioms` so its hypotheses
exclude inputs that can make the product NaN, such as requiring `a` to be
strictly positive; update `plogpB-nonneg` to provide the stronger hypothesis
from its existing nonzero case. Check `log₂-nonpos` and `add-nonneg` for
NaN-producing inputs as well, tightening their hypotheses only where needed to
keep their claimed properties valid.
Review comments at @scripts/audit-trust-base.py:
- Around line 148-155: Update the --safe validation in the safe_modules loop to
inspect only OPTIONS pragmas, rather than searching the full file text, and
require --safe as a distinct option within a pragma. Preserve the existing error
report when no OPTIONS pragma contains it.
- Around line 1-3: Resolve the governance failure for audit-trust-base.py by
porting the audit to an allowed language or adding an explicit policy exemption;
if porting it, update the Justfile and both CI configurations to invoke the
replacement.

These patterns do not match Agda interface files.
Agda writes interface files as *.agdai, not *.ai. Newer Agda versions write them under _build/. *.agda-ir/ is not an Agda artefact. *.ai also hides unrelated files, for example Adobe Illustrator files. After a local just prove-agda, the generated interfaces stay untracked but are not ignored.

Align the Agda package versions across both CI jobs.
.gitlab-ci.yml says Debian Bookworm provides the versions stated here, but the Debian package catalogue lists Agda 2.6.2.2 and agda-stdlib 1.7.1 for Bookworm. The GitHub Actions job installs unversioned packages, so it does not pin Agda 2.6.4.3 and agda-stdlib 1.7.2. Pin matching versions in both jobs, or update the comments to describe the versions each job uses.

The audit records mul-sign as true, but it is false for a = 0, b = −∞.
The audit statement is wrong for this case, which comment c2 explains. Update this row when you change the axiom.

The governance policy rejects this new Python file, so CI fails.
The cicd_rules/banned_language_file check fails on this tracked Python file. The PR cannot pass required governance in its current form. Do one of these:
- Port the audit to an allowed language.
- Add an explicit exemption for this file in the governance policy.
The Justfile and both CI configurations call python3 scripts/audit-trust-base.py. Update all three call sites if you port the script.

Resolved by #18 (trust-quarantine rebuild, merged) + #19 (soundness hardening, POSIX-shell gate port, estate ledger — all checks green). Requirement [1] — no deadlock from Requirement [2] — a missing corpus must fail, not pass. Both layers assert it: Proofing depth (beyond the letter of the issue, per the "safe ultraplan" brief):
Toolchain measurements (why the standards copy could never have worked verbatim): Ubuntu 24.04's Verified state: |
…gate port (follow-up to #18; closes #4) (#19) ## Why this PR exists PR #18 merged (a4e33a9) but **main went red on both of its checks**: the governance `anti-pattern policy` job (the merged tree carried `scripts/audit-trust-base.py`; estate bans Python files) and the `Agda — proofs/theories` job (the merged workflow still used the `.agda-lib`-only stdlib registration, which can never succeed with Ubuntu's `agda-stdlib` layout). And the review surfaced a genuine **soundness bug** in the axiom set. This branch carries the full resolution — it is the continuation of #18, not a replacement design. ## 1. Soundness fix (the important one) CodeRabbit's review caught that my original `mul-sign : 0.0 ≤ᶠ a → b ≤ᶠ 0.0 → 0.0 ≤ᶠ - (a * b)` was **refutable**: at `a = 0.0`, `b = log₂ 0 = −∞`, the product is `0·(−∞) = NaN`, and `T (0.0 ≤ᵇ NaN)` **is inhabited** — a refutable axiom inhabits `⊥` and proves anything. Tightening the hypothesis to `0.0 <ᶠ a` (the suggestion) makes that entry axiom true, but the merged corpus then fed the *non-strict* `lower d` hypothesis into the *strict* mul-sign, so the chain wouldn't even type-check. This PR fixes it **structurally instead of hypothesis-wise**: the strict guard moves *into the term*. ```agda plogp : Float → Float plogp v = if 0.0 <ᵇ v then - (v * log₂ v) else 0.0 klTerm : Float → Float → Float klTerm p q = if 0.0 <ᵇ p then p * log₂ (p ÷ q) else 0.0 ``` - NaN-safe for *every* input (out-of-guard side — including NaN — returns exactly `0.0`, which is what the `0·log 0 = 0` convention prescribes; no caller can ever observe an unguarded product). - `v = 1` → `−0.0`, and `0 ≤ᵇ −0.0` computes true, so the boundary is consistent (`plogp-one-boundary : 0.0 ≤ᶠ plogp 1.0 = tt` pins this). - The whole `log₂-nonpos` + `mul-sign` + `neg-nonpos` entry-wise machinery collapses to **one** honest FFI axiom: `plogp-nonneg : (v) → 0.0 ≤ᶠ v → v ≤ᶠ 1.0 → 0.0 ≤ᶠ plogp v`. - Trust base: **6 → 5 postulates** (ffi-fact 3: `plogp-nonneg` `add-nonneg` `add-comm`; conjecture 2: `kl-nonneg` `js-bounded`). `entropy-nonneg` and `js-symmetric` remain **proven top-level theorems** (per-entry float lemma postulated, top-level theorem proven — exactly the split POSTULATE-AUDIT Phase 2 prescribed); the `Distribution` hypothesis transport (`lower d {i}`, per the review) is kept. - No `with`-abstraction stuck-term gymnastics anymore: `plogpB`/`klTermB` are deleted, so the definitional-equality fragility in the old entropy chain is gone too. ## 2. Estate cross-dependency: the `Trusted-base reduction policy` job `standards/scripts/check-trusted-base.sh` (governance `trusted-base` job) has been **red on this repo since the pre-2026 corpus** — it demands every `postulate` marker be inline-annotated or ledgered. Done properly: - each `postulate` keyword now has a contiguous `-- AXIOM:` / `-- TRUSTED:` leading comment block (the checker walks back only through comment lines — this is why the estate marker must sit above the *keyword*, not per-declaration); - new `docs/proof-debt.md` in the policy schema: §(a) three discharged items (entropy-nonneg, js-symmetric, the five 2024 float "axioms" that are now plain re-exports), §(c) the three necessary ffi-facts with justifications/citations, §(d) the two conjectures with owner + deadline (2027-03-31, standards#124 sweep boundary); - verified locally against the actual `standards@main` script: `[OK] All 2 escape hatch(es) are documented`. ## 3. Language policy: Python is banned — gate ported to POSIX shell `scripts/audit-trust-base.py` deleted (anti-pattern job fail); all gate logic now lives in two `.sh` files that both CI systems (GH Actions + GitLab) and `just prove-*` share: - `scripts/prove-agda.sh` — apt-layout stdlib probe (`-i /usr/share/agda-stdlib` when `/usr/share/agda-stdlib/Data` exists; `.agda-lib` discovery only as fallback), `--compile-dir` into a writable dir (the shipped `.agdai` tree is root-owned), fail-closed on empty corpus, per-file flags chosen by a `{-# OPTIONS … --safe` **regex** (not substring — per review), and `--safe` iff the pragma claims it. - `scripts/audit-trust-base.sh` — the seven check families ported 1:1 from the python audit whose negative-test battery (smuggled postulate, foreign file, rename drift both directions, vacuous `where`-relation, budget overflow) is re-validated on the port (see below). ## 4. CI robustness ports - `Detect proof changes`: on `git diff` failure → warn + `proofs=true` (conservative; the old `|| true` path could **skip** verification on error — suggestion adopted with the polarity flipped to fail-safe). - `runs-on: ubuntu-24.04` pinned on the correctness job (`ubuntu-latest` floats to 26 on 2026-10-19 mid-review-window). - No workflow-level `paths:` filter remains (issue #4 req [1]); corpus non-empty assertion (req [2]) kept in both the sh audit and prove-agda. ## Validation - Local: `sh scripts/audit-trust-base.sh .` → `OK — 5 postulate(s) (conjecture=2 ffi-fact=3), 2 safe module(s)`; negative battery T1 (smuggled `postulate` into Foundations) and T2 (extra tagged axiom) both exit 1 with all expected `::error::` families; estate `check-trusted-base.sh` green as above. - **First-ever real `agda 2.6.4` type-check of this corpus runs in this PR's CI** — the job previously died before invoking Agda on main. If residual errors surface, fixes land here. Refs: #4, #18. `Closes #4` (issue body's remaining acceptance: verified corpus — this PR makes it actually verify). --------- Co-authored-by: arena-agent <297053741+arena-agent@users.noreply.github.com>

::warning::s instead of failing) because the corpus does not compile, and cannot:module InformationTheoryininformation_theory.agda— Agda requires the top-level module name to match the file name;postulate ... where _≥_ : Float → Float → Set—where-clauses on postulate signatures don't parse;_≥_/_≤_are unbound outside the (illegal)whereclauses;v == 0.0— no such operator;foldr (λ _ → Float) …— stdlibData.Vec.foldrtakes its motive explicitly and the step must be length-graded;--saferejectspostulateoutright (Agda testSafeFlagPostulate, since 2.6.1) — and this repo's corpus is postulate-shaped: the float ops are irreducible runtime facts;Probabilityallowsp = 2.0, breaking H ≥ 0; unnormalisedp‖qbreaks Gibbs).A hard-fail CI over a tree that can't compile is a broken window the next person silences. So this PR fixes the proofs and the pipeline, in one reviewable unit.
What this does
Corpus rebuild (trust layering, enforced mechanically):
InformationTheory.Foundations--safex ≤ᶠ y := T (x ≤ᵇ y),log₂,plogp/klTerm(zero-guard exposed as a Bool parameter so theorems case-analyse without stuckwith-abstraction),sumF,Distributionwith real hypotheses (lower/upperon every entry — which also excludes NaN, since NaN fails every comparison — andnormalised : sumF values ≡ 1.0),entropy,kl-divergence,jensen-shannonInformationTheory.Axioms--safe(deliberate)postulatemay exist: 4ffi-factIEEE-754 axioms (log₂-nonpos,mul-sign,add-nonneg,add-comm) + 2conjectureaxioms (kl-nonneg,js-bounded), each tagged-- ECHIDNA:trust <class> :: <name>InformationTheory--safeentropy-nonnegandjs-symmetricare now proven (POSTULATE-AUDIT Phase 2, fromffi-facts only — never from the conjectures), pluslookup-map/sumF-nonneg/zipWith-cong₂/zipWith-commplumbing and definitional sanity lemmas (klTerm 0.0 q ≡ 0.0byrefl, i.e. the zero-guard actually computes)Gate:
.github/workflows/echidna-verify.yml— job-level change detection (per note 1), stdlib registration + a--safestdlib probe so a missing library fails loudly rather than silently skipping, fail-closed corpus count (per note 2), hard-failagda --safe/--without-Ktype-check,python3 scripts/audit-trust-base.pyagainstproofs/trust-base.json, log artifact, weekly cron. All actions pinned to the full SHAs already in the estateactions.lock(checkout3d3c42e…v7.0.1, upload-artifact043fb46…v7.0.1). Toolchain is aptagda/agda-stdlib— the same install path standards used; Agda 2.6.4.3 + stdlib 1.7.2 onubuntu-24.04, andechidna.tomlsays so.Audit enforcement (
scripts/audit-trust-base.py, one implementation for CI +just+ GitLab): postulates outside the quarantine fail; untagged/off-manifest/renamed/reclassified axioms fail; set equality is bidirectional, so quietly deleting an axiom to make the budget pass also fails; unregistered new.agdafiles fail; safe modules must keep their--safepragma and the quarantine must not claim it; thewhere _≥_/_≤_ :vacuous-relation shape is regression-gated.Cross-surface:
Justfileprove-agda/prove-audit/prove-check-all;.gitlab-ci.ymlproof-verificationupgraded from the "would run here" stub to the real check (stillallow_failure: trueby design — the mirror is a mirror, GitHub is the gate; the comment says so so nobody "fixes" it by deleting either half);proofs/README.adocrewritten to describe the tree that exists (drops the phantomset_theory.agda/language_types.agda/verified/*.v/opencyc_integration.agdaand labelsspecs/*.spechonestly as unchecked pseudo-Agda);echidna.tomlfile lists match reality andfail_on_unverifiedflips totrue;POSTULATE-AUDIT.adocupdated with a remediation ledger while preserving the 2026-04 verdicts;CHANGELOG.adocentries.Verification so far (local)
The sandbox network blocks apt/GitHub-release binaries, so no Agda here — CI on the real runner is the ground truth for the type-check (that's also exactly where it must pass). Measured locally:
scripts/audit-trust-base.py: OK on the new tree (6 axioms = 4ffi-fact+ 2conjecture, 3.agdafiles, all registered);where _≥_regression; unregistered file; clean-tree pass.Expected review order: read
Axioms.agda(the whole trust story is there), thenFoundations.agda'sDistribution(why the hypotheses exist), then the two theorems, then the workflow.Closes #4 (verification runs here; standards'
agda-lolremains the guarded no-op + canary its header says it is — corpus return to standards is explicitly its own re-entry criterion, so no standards-side removal PR is made; cross-linked below).Co-authored-by: Arena agent session, measured 2026-10-04.
