Summary

serde_yaml 0.9 is deprecated and depends on unsafe-libyaml, an archived c2rust translation of libyaml that RUSTSEC-2024-0449 flags as unmaintained. This replaces it with serde-saphyr 2.0 (#[forbid(unsafe_code)]), the replacement the advisory recommends. It resolves W3 in hyperpolymath/standards docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc.

  • New src/yaml.rs (MPL-2.0). Every YAML call site now goes through this one module.
    • from_str: hand-written configs (attack profiles, ambush timelines, amuck specs). Uses serde-saphyr's default resource budget.
    • from_report_str: machine-written reports (diff loader, a2ml bundles, attack results). The node and event budget is scaled to the input length. With the default 250k-node cap, YAML reports from scans over about 15k files failed to load (measured). A document without aliases can't have more nodes than bytes, so alias expansion stays bounded.
    • to_string: report export.
  • MSRV raised from 1.85.0 to 1.89. This was decided explicitly; it is not incidental. Measured on 1.85.0:
    • serde-saphyr 1.1.0 declares no MSRV but uses let-chains and is_multiple_of, so it needs 1.88.
    • serde-saphyr 1.2 and later need 1.89.
    • noyalib needs 1.86 or later.
    • The only releases that build on 1.85 are frozen and pre-1.0 (serde-saphyr 0.0.10, noyalib 0.0.15).
    • main's committed lockfile already needs 1.88 (encoding_rs 0.8.42, sha2 0.11.1, proptest 1.12).
    • The MSRV is updated in Cargo.toml, CONTRIBUTING.md, 0-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml, the k9 metadata, and the gui feature comments. eframe 0.36.2 needs 1.95, so gui is still opt-in above the floor.
    • The higher MSRV enables clippy's manual_is_multiple_of lint (gated at 1.87). Its one hit, in src/attestation/evidence.rs, is fixed. Behaviour is identical because CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL is a non-zero constant.

Behaviour changes

  • YAML output has the same values but not the same bytes: '2.5' becomes "2.5", multi-line strings become | blocks, and blank lines inside those blocks keep their indentation. Nothing in tests, fixtures, scripts or CI compares YAML bytes. Even serde_yaml no longer reproduces the committed reports/*.yaml byte for byte.
  • A bare ~ or null in a string field (for example a profile arg) is now an error instead of the string "~". That follows YAML 1.2, where these mean null. Quote it to keep it as a string.

Verification (on the merge with main at 8955f61)

  • cargo build --locked: no warnings.
  • cargo clippy --locked --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo fmt --check: clean.
  • cargo test --locked --all-features --no-fail-fast: 655 passed, 0 failed.
  • New tests in src/yaml.rs:
    • the scaled report budget accepts documents above the default node cap;
    • an alias bomb (billion laughs) is still rejected;
    • the committed reports/*.yaml files written by serde_yaml still load and round-trip;
    • KYAML input parses.
  • cargo +1.89.0 build --locked and cargo +1.89.0 test --locked --no-run succeed.
  • cargo audit: compared with main, the only change is that RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is gone; there are no new advisories. unsafe-libyaml and serde_yaml are gone from Cargo.lock.
  • KYAML: the committed reports, the example profile and an amuck spec were converted with yq -o kyaml (mikefarah v4.54.1). Each parses to the same value as its YAML original.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • Emit KYAML for YAML output, and accept .kyaml in the loaders, in line with the estate YAML policy.
  • After merge: move W3 to Resolved in hyperpolymath/standards docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc.

serde_yaml 0.9 is deprecated and depends on unsafe-libyaml, an archived
c2rust translation of libyaml flagged unmaintained by RUSTSEC-2024-0449.
Swap in serde-saphyr 2.0 (#![forbid(unsafe_code)]) behind a small
crate::yaml module:

- hand-written configs (attack profiles, ambush timelines, amuck specs)
  use serde-saphyr's default resource budget;
- machine-written reports (diff loader, a2ml bundles, attack results)
get a node/event budget scaled to input length. The default 250k-node
cap rejected YAML reports from scans over ~15k files; an alias-free
document cannot have more nodes than bytes, so alias expansion stays
  bounded.

Raise rust-version from 1.85.0 to 1.89: every serde-saphyr release that
compiles on 1.85 is pre-1.0 and unmaintained (1.1.0 uses let-chains and
is_multiple_of despite declaring no MSRV), noyalib needs 1.86+, and the
committed lockfile already required 1.88 (encoding_rs, sha2, proptest).
Default, http/signing/sarif and test builds verified on 1.89.0 --locked.

YAML output is value-equivalent but not byte-identical ('…' -> "…",
multi-line strings as | blocks); nothing compares the bytes, and
reports written by serde_yaml still load (new fixture test). KYAML
input parses (new test). cargo audit: RUSTSEC-2024-0449 gone, no new
advisories.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • YAML configuration and report handling now uses a maintained, safe-Rust parser.
    • Machine-generated reports apply input-scaled resource limits, including bounded alias expansion.
    • Existing reports remain readable, with YAML serialisation and deserialisation support retained.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved protection against excessive YAML resource consumption.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the minimum supported Rust version to 1.89, including GUI requirements.
    • Documented YAML formatting differences and rejection of unquoted ~ or null string values.

The pull request replaces serde_yaml with serde-saphyr through a new public YAML module. It routes YAML parsing and report serialisation through that module, raises the declared Rust MSRV to 1.89, and updates related documentation.

Changes: YAML migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
YAML module and Rust baseline

The crate adds a public YAML module backed by serde-saphyr. Its parsing functions use default budgets for configuration and input-scaled node and event limits for reports. The module also adds YAML serialisation and tests for resource limits, alias expansion, configuration syntax, and report fixtures. The declared MSRV changes from 1.85.0 to 1.89. The checkpoint condition in EvidenceAccumulator::record_file uses is_multiple_of; the interval remains 100 files.
YAML parsing call sites
src/a2ml/mod.rs, src/ambush/timeline.rs, src/amuck/mod.rs, src/attack/profile.rs, src/report/diff.rs
YAML parsing in report, timeline, specification, and profile loaders now uses the shared module. JSON parsing and the described error handling and fallback behaviour remain unchanged.
YAML serialisation and validation
src/report/output.rs, tests/e2e_tests.rs
Report serialisation and its end-to-end test now use the shared YAML serialiser. The changelog records formatting differences and YAML compatibility notes.

Suggested reviewers: metadatastician

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to afc1b

YAML reports with more than 64 MiB of scalar content may fail to load. This is a narrow large-report limitation that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to afc1b

The migration preserves the inspected input limits and adds explicit parser resource budgets. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns parser compatibility and resource containment for report loaders that already read files without a size limit.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Malformed YAML can affect the process importing the selected configuration or report. A2ML's uncapped file reads expose that process to input-sized memory consumption before parsing, but the full PR comparison shows those reads predate this migration; increased exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected profile loader retains its 4 MiB read limit, and the diff-report loader retains its 64 MiB read limit. Both deserialize into existing typed structures; the migration does not remove those caller controls.
  • observed — The report wrapper leaves default alias, scalar and nesting limits intact. Dependency code separately rejects excessive alias counts, replay counts and replay depth. A committed test asserts rejection of a nested alias-expansion document.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Centralization gives configuration and report consumers a common policy implementation, but it does not provide uniform pre-parser containment: the diff loader bounds file reads while the existing A2ML loaders do not.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a consistent maximum report-input policy for A2ML ingestion, reject oversized input explicitly, and document how read limits interact with scalar and expansion budgets. This would harden a pre-existing containment gap without disabling parser protections.

CI status on ab8a0fe:

  • Red: .github/workflows/coverage.yml, cargo-audit.yml, release.yml (push event). These are not caused by this PR. Each run failed the moment it was created, with no jobs, which means GitHub rejected the workflow for a feature-branch push event. The same happens on every feature-branch push in this repo; for example, Unify PA rule IDs into one canonical table #232's push-event runs of cargo-audit.yml fail identically while its pull_request runs pass. This PR touches no workflow files. Fixing it is workflow-gate work and out of scope here; no fix exists yet.
  • Missing: pull_request CI. Rust CI, Security Audit, Governance, CodeQL, Dependency Review and the rest have not started for this PR, although each one has a pull_request trigger with no draft filter. I will not push an empty commit or close and reopen to start them; the next real push will trigger them. Locally on 1.89.0 and stable, build, clippy (no findings in touched code) and cargo test --all-features are green, apart from the two readiness diagnostics tests that also fail on main. Details are in the PR description.
  • Green: GitGuardian, Semgrep.

Resolve src/main.rs: main now imports lib modules via use panic_attack::…, so the binary's duplicated mod yaml; declaration is dropped (yaml stays pub in lib.rs).

Raising rust-version to 1.89 enables clippy's manual_is_multiple_of
lint (MSRV-gated at 1.87), which fails `-D warnings` on the evidence
checkpoint check. CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL is a non-zero const, so
is_multiple_of is behaviour-identical to the `% == 0` it replaces.

from_report_str scaled node and event limits with input length but left
max_total_scalar_bytes at serde-saphyr's 64 MiB default, so a report
with more than 64 MiB of string content (reachable via the a2ml bundle
loader, which reads whole files) would still be rejected. Scale it the
same way; alias limits stay at their defaults.

## What

[hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234](hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234)
(merged 2026-10-20) replaced `serde_yaml` with `serde-saphyr` 2.0.
RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is now clear in every known affected repository, so:

- W3 moves out of *Local remediation*, which now reads "No entries."
- It becomes **R2 (was W3)** under *Resolved*. Keeping "was W3"
preserves references, including panic-attack#234's description.

## What the entry now records

These are the parts of the fix that weren't obvious from the advisory:

- **Minimum Rust version.** serde-saphyr 1.2 and later declare Rust
1.89. 1.1.0 declares none but only compiles on 1.88 or later
(let-chains, `is_multiple_of`); this was measured on 1.85.0. noyalib
releases after 0.0.15 need 1.86 or later. The noyalib releases that
build on 1.85 also predate RUSTSEC-2026-0333. panic-attack therefore
raised its floor from 1.85.0 to 1.89 instead of pinning a frozen
release.
- **Resource limits.** serde-saphyr's default parse budget (250k nodes,
1M events, 64 MiB of scalar text) rejected YAML reports from large
scans. Scale the node, event and scalar-byte limits with the input
length, and keep the alias limits at their defaults.
- **Checked clear:** `hyperpolymath/echidna` (no lockfile holds
`unsafe-libyaml`). This is not a full census.
- **Follow-up for other repositories:** run `cargo tree … -i
unsafe-libyaml` to find the parent, then swap it as above.

## Checks

- `asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN` renders the file with no warnings,
and the table count is unchanged (5).
- The commit message passes `.githooks/commit-msg`.

hyperpolymath pushed a commit to hyperpolymath/standards that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
#1320 merged as an empty commit (6f96eab): #1311 was squash-merged, and
merging main back into #1320's branch resolved the conflict on
docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc to main's side, dropping the edit.
main therefore still lists W3 under Local remediation.

Reapply the edit unchanged. hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234 replaced
serde_yaml with serde-saphyr 2.0, so RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is clear in every
known affected repository: W3 leaves Local remediation ("No entries.")
and becomes R2 (was W3) under Resolved, recording the MSRV constraint,
the parse-budget scaling, echidna checked clear, and the follow-up
command for other repositories.

Rendered with asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN: no warnings.

hyperpolymath added a commit to hyperpolymath/standards that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
## Why this exists

#1320 merged as an **empty commit** (`6f96eab`), so `main` still lists
W3 under *Local remediation*.

How it happened: #1311 was squash-merged. Merging `main` back into
#1320's branch then conflicted on `docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc`.
That merge commit, `d952134`, resolved the conflict by taking `main`'s
side, which left the branch identical to `main`. This PR reapplies the
same edit, unchanged, on top of the latest `main`; `main`'s copy of the
file is otherwise identical to the one the edit was made against.

## What

[hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234](hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234)
(merged 2026-10-20) replaced `serde_yaml` with `serde-saphyr` 2.0, so
RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is clear in every known affected repository.

- W3 leaves *Local remediation*, which now reads "No entries."
- It becomes **R2 (was W3)** under *Resolved*. The entry records:
- **Minimum Rust version:** no maintained safe-Rust serde YAML crate
builds on 1.85, and the noyalib releases that do predate
RUSTSEC-2026-0333.
- **Resource limits:** scaling serde-saphyr's parse budget for large
machine-written documents.
  - **Checked clear:** `hyperpolymath/echidna`.
- **Follow-up:** a `cargo tree -i unsafe-libyaml` command for any other
repository.

## Checks

- The diff against `main` is this one file, +33 / −18, and nothing else.
- `asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN` renders it with no warnings.
- The commit message passes `.githooks/commit-msg`.

**Merge note:** if `main` moves before merge, please update this branch
with a rebase, or a merge that keeps this side of the file. A plain
"merge main" that takes `main`'s side reproduces the empty merge.

hyperpolymath added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
First in a stack of follow-ups to #234 (KYAML and I-JSON/JCS adoption).

## Summary

KYAML is the estate's YAML dialect (`hyperpolymath/standards`
`3-practice/YAML-POLICY.adoc` §3.4, D280), and estate-owned
configuration uses the `.kyaml` extension (D307). KYAML is a strict
subset of YAML, so `serde-saphyr` already parses it; only the extension
dispatch was missing.

- `crate::yaml` gains `EXTENSIONS = ["yaml", "yml", "kyaml"]` plus
`is_extension` and `has_extension`, so the list lives in one place.
- These loaders now dispatch through it:
  - attack profiles
  - ambush timelines
  - amuck specs
  - the `diff` report loader
  - a2ml bundles
- `assemblyline::is_source_file` includes `kyaml`, so editing a `.kyaml`
file changes the repo fingerprint and triggers a rescan.
- The amuck error text now lists `kyaml`.

## Tests

- The timeline, profile and amuck loaders each load a real `.kyaml`
file. The test inputs are the output of `yq -o kyaml` (mikefarah
v4.54.1), the formatter behind standards' `scripts/kyaml-format.sh`.
- `yaml_extensions_include_kyaml` pins the extension set, including
negatives such as `YAML` and `kyml`.

## Verification

- `cargo fmt --check`: clean.
- `cargo build --locked`: no warnings.
- `cargo clippy --locked --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings`:
clean.
- `cargo test --locked --all-features --no-fail-fast`: 663 passed, 0
failed.

## Next in the stack

- Convert `profiles/attack-profile.example.yaml` to `.kyaml` (stacked on
this PR).
- JSON reports as I-JSON/JCS.
- Attestation hashes over JCS bytes.
- KYAML report output.

Part of the KYAML / I-JSON-JCS follow-up stack to #234. Independent of
#235 and #236, so it is based on `main`.

## Summary

The estate JSON policy (`hyperpolymath/standards`
`3-practice/JSON-POLICY.adoc`, rule J-1) requires authored JSON to be
I-JSON (RFC 7493), serialised as JCS (RFC 8785), with exactly one final
LF. panic-attack wrote every report with `to_string_pretty`, so none of
its output was canonical.

- **New `crate::json::to_canonical_string`.** It serialises through
`serde_json::Value` and canonicalises with **`ijson-jcs`**, the tool
behind the estate gate, so output passes `ijson-jcs check` by
construction. `ijson-jcs` isn't on crates.io, so it is a git dependency
pinned to a full commit SHA (`3a9a4ee`). panic-attack doesn't publish to
crates.io, and the shared CI runs no cargo-deny, so a git source is
allowed.
- **These report artefacts now go through it:**
  - `--output-format json` (`save_report`, storage)
  - `assail --output` and its `--quiet` / `--headless` stdout form
- the amuck, abduct, axial, adjudicate, assay, aggregate and
assemblyline reports (plus the assemblyline storage copy) and
`ReportFormatter::save`
- the patch-bridge triage report and its mitigation registry
(`.machine_readable/patch-bridge/registry.json`)
- **Attestation.** `assail --attest` already seals
`report_json.as_bytes()`, so the report hash is now taken over canonical
bytes. The stdout paths use `print!`, because the canonical string
already ends in its one LF.

## Consumer check (in this repo)

- Workflows read reports with `jq` (`bridge-gate`, `scan-and-report`),
which parses. `chapel-ci` greps a value (`repo-alpha`), which compaction
keeps.
- Tests parse the JSON; none relies on pretty-print spacing or line
structure.
- **Not checked here:** panicbot (gitbot-fleet), VeriSimDB and Hypatia,
which consume panic-attack JSON in other repos. JSON-POLICY §6 asks that
each consumer is confirmed to parse before conversion. Please confirm,
or I can audit them in a follow-up.

## Deliberately left alone

These have separate consumers and should be follow-ups if wanted:
- VeriSimDB hexads
- SARIF (its own format and extension)
- PanLL exports
- the attestation envelope (next PR in the stack)
- ad-hoc CLI JSON such as `query` hits

## Found while testing (not fixed here)

Two `assail` runs on the same input give **different reports**:
`recommended_attacks`, `frameworks` and the taint-matrix rows come from
`HashSet`/`HashMap` iteration order. JCS sorts object keys, but by
design it leaves array order alone. So until this is fixed, "equal input
gives equal bytes" doesn't hold for the report itself. The fix (derive
`Ord`, use `BTreeSet`/`BTreeMap`) is the next small PR.

## Verification

- `cargo fmt --check`: clean.
- `cargo build --locked`: no warnings, on stable and on 1.89.0.
- `cargo clippy --locked --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings`:
clean.
- `cargo test --locked --all-features --no-fail-fast`: 662 passed, 0
failed.
- New tests:
- RFC 8785 essentials: sorted keys, `1e+21`, `-0` → `0`, `\u0001`, one
LF.
  - The I-JSON bound ±(2^53−1).
  - Idempotence and lossless round trip on a real `assail` report.
- **End to end:** `assail --output x.json` and `--quiet` stdout both
pass `ijson-jcs check`.
