Supersedes #46. Same tree, byte-identical to #46 head bf96065 (git diff empty), re-landed because main's required_signatures rule blocked #46 on CodeRabbit's unsigned docstring commit 2ed317d. Here every commit is signed; that commit keeps CodeRabbit as author and is re-signed by the maintainer. Review history and resolved threads live on #46.

Important

Disclosure — a measured contradiction with ADR-0002, not fixed here.
On the standing real-world corpus (google-flatbuffers-bounty), read-before-init reports 78 findings. Counted, not sampled:

  • 3 true positives: python/flatbuffers/flexbuffers.py:1378/1400/1514 (Vector, TypedVector, Map). try: start = self._StartVector(); yield self; finally: self._EndVector(start, …). If _StartVector() raises, the finally raises UnboundLocalError, which masks the original exception. These are genuine latent bugs.
  • 71 false positives, correlated guards: every generated Pack method has the shape if self.x is not None: x = … … if self.x is not None: Add(builder, x). All 71 were checked mechanically: the line above each flagged read is exactly if self.<v> is not None:.
  • 4 false positives, loops over non-empty literals: for sizePrefix in [True, False]: in tests/py_test.py always runs, but the ADR's rule "the loop may run zero times" treats it as possibly empty.

ADR-0002's counter-condition paragraph says the rule's only false-positive sources are opacity and scope. That claim is false. This PR transcribes the ADR faithfully and does not add path sensitivity, which would be a design change. The follow-up is an issue (with acceptance criteria) plus an owner ruling on amending the ADR.

dead-store: 6 findings on the same corpus, all at INFO with the call-side-effect counter-condition. The two read in full are genuine: an unused result = subprocess.run(…) and an unused s = …GetRootAsStat(…).

M4 — Python CFG, dataflow, and T1 rules 9–10

This implements docs/adr/0002-t1-language-and-cfg.adoc as a transcription. Gap-fills are marked and snapshot-tested.

Commits, each reviewable on its own:

  1. Grammar probe: asserts the node kinds and field names the builder relies on, against the pinned tree-sitter-python.
  2. RuleCtx::new + shared units(): the CFG is built once per file (OnceCell) and shared by every T1 rule. This is a refactor with no behaviour change.
  3. cfg/:
    • The locals pre-pass.
    • FunctionUnit::{Analysable, Opaque}, so a rule cannot obtain a CFG for an opaque function.
    • The try model: a try_entry edge and a body-tail edge to each handler, plus raise edges from the else/handler tails into the exceptional finally.
    • finally copied once per exit.
    • 6 CFG goldens, each read by eye.
  4. dataflow.rs:
    • A generic worklist with union meet and no widening.
    • Backward liveness and forward may-unbound.
    • A dead store is reported only if it is dead in every reachable finally copy; a read is flagged if it is unbound in any.
  5. Rules:
    • dead-store: _-prefixed targets are suppressed; an RHS with a call, await, yield or walrus reports at INFO with the ADR counter-condition; otherwise WARN; never ERROR.
    • read-before-init: WARN uniformly.
    • Both are Tier::T1 → DATAFLOW, derived from the tier.

A chosen false negative, documented and pinned by a test: a walrus inside a comprehension clears may-unbound. Reporting it would fire on if any((m := p(s)) for s in xs): use(m).

Exit gate (PLAN.adoc M4)

  • Both T1 rules pass their positive/negative corpora. Every ADR-0002 corpus obligation is covered, one case per fixture file.
  • The CFG snapshot tests are green, and the try/except snapshot shows both handler edges.
  • A function containing exec( produces zero T1 findings, with a known-answer positive twin per rule that differs only in the call.
  • Module-level code is not analysed (a negative fixture per rule).
  • just check is green: fmt, clippy -D warnings, 97 + 64 + 5 + 1 tests. just e2e passes 35/35 and the exit-code contract is unchanged.

Mutants — every one killed, each naming the right file

Layer Mutant Went red
CFG builder drop the pre-statement raise (try_entry) edge a_handler_is_reached_from_try_entry_and_from_the_body_tail ("no try_entry edge")
CFG builder drop the try-body-tail → handler edge 3 dataflow corpus tests
Solver union meet → intersection 5 dataflow corpus tests
OPAQUE hatch remove exec from the triggers falsifier: dead-store/negative/opaque_exec.py
Rule 9 delete the _-prefix suppression falsifier: dead-store/negative/underscore_target.py

The falsifier caught one real error while I was writing the fixtures. My first read-before-init OPAQUE twin never assigned y, which made y a global, so the "positive control" was silent for the right reason. It was rewritten so that y is a genuine local bound on only one path.

Also in this PR

RawFinding gains read-only getters (tier, severity, location, counter_condition) so that rule tests can pin a severity rather than only a count. There are no setters. The honesty invariant, under which rule_id and evidence are never set by a rule, is untouched.

Real-world scan: 590 files, 119 findings, 2.0 s (release build).

…st it

M4 Step 0. ADR-0002 names node kinds and field names in prose, and prose is
not a measurement. This probe parses one corpus exercising every construct in
the ADR's table and asserts the kinds and fields the CFG builder will depend
on, so a grammar bump that renames or removes one fails here, naming the thing
that moved, rather than silently turning a CFG edge into a no-op.

Running it overturned two claims the builder would otherwise have been written
against. Both came from reading the grammar's generated `node-types.json`
during planning rather than from parsing:

* `except*` does NOT produce an error node. tree-sitter-python 0.25.0 accepts
  PEP 654 syntax and demotes the `*` to an anonymous child, leaving a named
  tree shape identical to plain `except`. `has_error()` is false, so the
  planned OPAQUE trigger does not cover it — and misreading a group handler as
  an ordinary one is worse than refusing the function, since the two have
  genuinely different control flow. Hence `is_except_group`, a structural
  detector, with both arms asserted and two mutants killed against it.

* The `except E as e` binding is NOT `except_clause.alias`, despite
  `node-types.json` advertising exactly that field. The parser emits
  `value: (as_pattern (identifier) alias: (as_pattern_target ...))`, one level
  down. A builder written from the schema would have got `None`, never bound
  `e`, and turned every aliased handler into a `read-before-init` false
  positive on `e`.

Also asserted, each with a paired control so no leg can pass vacuously:
try/with/delete expose no fields the builder could use, so their parts must be
matched by kind; `while/else` exists though the ADR table omits it; a bare
annotation `x: int` carries `type` but no `right` and so binds nothing.

No builder code yet beyond the one detector the measurements forced.

No behaviour change. All nine struct-literal sites (the engine, the
falsifier, and seven T0 test helpers) now go through one constructor. A
later commit can then add a private, lazily-built per-file CFG shared by
every T1 rule without touching each site again.

Lowers every function_definition to a FunctionUnit, per ADR-0002:

- Analysable(FunctionCfg) with private fields, or Opaque{reason}; a T1 rule
  cannot obtain a CFG for a function it must not analyse. Triggers: parse
  error, exec/eval/locals/globals/vars in the own body, except*, module
  wildcard import, frame introspection, >4096 locals.
- Locals pre-pass (scope.rs): global/nonlocal excluded, bare annotations
  local, comprehension targets not leaked but walrus targets are, match
  captures precise (class names and keyword attribute names are not locals).
- try: a try_entry block and per-statement blocks give both handler edges
  ADR-0002 needs; else/handler tails raise to the exceptional finally;
  finally is copied per exit (normal, exceptional, each jump) — gap-fill.
- while/else, while True with no false edge, match arms — gap-fills.
- RuleCtx::units() builds once per file, lazily, Python only.

Six CFG snapshots (three ADR-mandated, three gap-fills), each read before
blessing; a mutant dropping the pre-statement raise edge is killed by the
direct try-edge test.

One worklist solver over a union meet, generic in direction, and the two
ADR-0002 problems transcribed from its equations. Block-level solutions are
replayed per event; dead_stores / unbound_reads combine the per-exit copies
of a finally per source location (dead only if dead in every copy;
may-unbound if in any), skipping unreachable blocks.

18 corpus cases, each "no finding" beside one that reports. Mutants killed:
intersection meet (5 tests red), dropped try-body-tail edge (3 red). A
walrus inside a comprehension clearing may-unbound is a chosen, documented
false negative.

Rule 9 `dead-store` and rule 10 `read-before-init`, transcribed from
ADR-0002 over `RuleCtx::units()` and `pons_core::dataflow`. Both are
Tier::T1 (DATAFLOW, derived from the tier), Python only, and never see an
OPAQUE function: `FunctionUnit::Opaque` carries no CFG.

dead-store: `_`/`_`-prefixed targets suppressed; an RHS with a call,
await, yield or walrus reports at INFO with the ADR's counter-condition;
otherwise WARN. Never ERROR. read-before-init: WARN uniformly.

Registered after the T0 catalogue; the ordered-id test is widened and
renamed. RawFinding gains read-only getters so rule tests can pin a
severity and counter-condition, not only a count. No setters.

Fixtures carry every ADR-0002 corpus obligation, one case per file, plus
an `exec(` negative with a known-answer positive twin per rule, and a
module-level negative.

Mutants killed: dropping `exec` from the OPAQUE triggers turns
dead-store/negative/opaque_exec.py red; deleting the `_` suppression
turns dead-store/negative/underscore_target.py red.

- grammar probe: assert the 10 further fields the builder reads
  (elif/else/with_item/decorated_definition/attribute/keyword_argument/
  default_parameter, plus guard/superclasses/with-as alias found by shape);
  a mutant renaming `value` and `guard` turned both tests red.
- dead-store description now transcribes ADR-0002's firing condition
  ("never read before it is redefined or the function ends"); the old
  string described only the overwrite case.
- read-before-init doc no longer claims opacity and scope are the only
  false-positive sources — the infeasible-path classes are #47.

…lder.rs

CodeRabbit (#46) correctly noted my d172272 reply was wrong: scope.rs and
mod.rs read further fields — import_statement/import_from_statement.name,
aliased_import.alias, (typed_)default_parameter.name, class_definition.name,
assignment.left/right, call.function. All now asserted; a mutant renaming
aliased_import.alias turned the probe red.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e0f5f

The new read-before-init rule can raise spurious warnings for handlers that re-raise or return, such as a handler that uses except E as e and then raises. This produces extra noise but does not cause incorrect runtime behavior. A small fix in the solver is recommended before or soon after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e0f5f

Scanning a crafted Python file can multiply work and memory use, potentially preventing completion of the entire scan. The demonstrated exposure is the scanner process; broader hosted or shared-environment impact is unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: One attacker-controlled Python file can amplify CFG construction through nested finally bodies. Each finally body is recursively lowered for normal and exceptional exits, so nesting inside those bodies repeatedly doubles construction. The default scan reaches this path without an inspected block or work budget, potentially exhausting the scanner process and preventing findings from the rest of the scan. Practical exhaustion thresholds and any external process limits remain unverified.
  • Low · architecture · observed: The public context permits path, language, text, and tree replacement after its private analysis cache has initialized, but provides no invalidation. Subsequent rules can therefore consume cached facts and locations from the previous source identity. This ownership inconsistency is introduced by the cache; normal Engine scanning avoids it by creating a fresh immutable context for each file. Downstream context-reuse exposure is unknown.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The attacker needs control of a readable Python file selected for scanning, not Python execution or elevated privileges. One such file can affect completion of the entire scan because analysis runs in the scanner process before the final report is returned. No tenant, remote-service, credential, or persistent-data exposure was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A function containing repeated try/finally nesting inside finally bodies reaches two recursive lowerings of each nested body per parent copy. This creates exponential construction growth in nesting depth, followed by dataflow allocations indexed by the expanded block count. The path is newly enabled by the default T1 rules; practical denial-of-service thresholds have not been measured.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Python gating prevents other languages from entering this pipeline, opacity checks exclude unsupported functions, and caching avoids rebuilding units for each rule. The local-count ceiling does not constrain finally nesting or generated block count, and a valid function with few locals can still reach repeated lowering.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cache ownership is confined to one context, but source identity is not frozen by the public API. Replacing identity fields after initialization leaves cached results unchanged. Engine's fresh per-file contexts contain this mismatch internally; no external reuse or automatic cross-context data retention was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Introduce a construction/work budget enforced during CFG expansion, with an explicit incomplete-analysis outcome when exceeded. Preserve that outcome in reporting so a budget-limited scan cannot be mistaken for a clean analysis; longer term, consider a representation that shares finally bodies without merging their continuation state.
  • proposed — Make context source identity immutable, or provide an explicit replacement operation that invalidates the cache atomically. This would align the public ownership contract with Engine's existing fresh-context discipline.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude unreachable predecessors from the forward meet. At present, a Kill in dead code creates read-before-init false positives.

solve joins facts from every predecessor, including blocks that cfg.reachable() marks unreachable. This matters for MayUnbound because Kill adds a local to the set. An unreachable block has an empty in-state. Its Kill events are then applied, and the resulting facts reach a reachable join.

The builder creates this state for a common handler shape. Take a handler that ends with raise or return:

  • Builder::stmt / Builder::jump set self.cur to a new unreachable block.
  • Builder::try_ emits the implicit kill e in that block.
  • Builder::try_ then adds that block to normal_ends, so it has an edge to join.

Example:

def f():
    e = None
    try:
        g()
    except E as e:
        raise
    return e

Python never raises UnboundLocalError here. The normal path keeps e = None, and the handler path leaves the function. unbound_reads still reports e@7, because the unreachable block after raise delivers {e} to the join. A del x after an early return inside an if produces the same result.

The same fix works in both directions. For a backward analysis, a reachable block has only reachable successors, so skipping unreachable sources does not change liveness.

🐛 Proposed fix
     let boundary = problem.boundary(cfg);
+ // Facts from code that cannot run must not reach a join: a `kill` after
+    // a `raise`/`return` would otherwise mark a name may-unbound.
+    let reachable = cfg.reachable();

     let mut queue: VecDeque<BlockId> = (0..n_blocks).collect();

+            state.union_with(&from[p]);
+        }

Add a regression test to crates/pons-core/src/dataflow/tests.rs:

#[test]
fn a_kill_after_a_handler_that_raises_does_not_reach_the_join() {
    let src = "def f():\n    e = None\n    try:\n        g()\n    except E as e:\n        raise\n    return e\n";
    assert_eq!(unbound(src), Vec::<String>::new());
}

In solve, exclude unreachable predecessor blocks from the forward meet by
checking predecessor reachability before unioning from[p] into state. Keep the
existing union behavior for reachable predecessors.

Reproduced on e0f5f8d (and the pass variant confirmed as the true-positive control). Per the repo's stopping rule a new finding becomes an issue rather than blocking the PR: tracked in #50 with fixtures, a mutant and the flatbuffers precision check as acceptance criteria.

@hyperpolymath Thanks for confirming the reproduction and explaining the stopping rule. Deferring this fix to #50 is consistent with that rule; it need not block PR #49. The finding remains valid, with fixtures, a mutant, and the flatbuffers precision check as acceptance criteria.
