Adds docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc and links it from 3-practice/SECURITY-ADVISORIES.adoc. The page lists dependency advisories that no estate repository can clear alone, because the fix has to ship upstream first. Each entry names the releases that unblock it and the local workarounds available meanwhile.

Entries

ID Advisory Status
W1 zvariant, zbus_names, zvariant_derive unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2026-0370/0371/0372) Blocked until atspi, including its zbus-lockstep / zbus_xml path, moves to zbus 6. Local workaround: turn off accesskit
W2 ttf-parser unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2026-0192) Blocked on ab_glyph / sctk-adwaita. Local workarounds: drop Adwaita decorations, or switch winit to its crossfont backend
W3 unsafe-libyaml unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2024-0449), via serde_yaml Under Local remediation: replace with serde-saphyr, or noyalib >= 0.0.53
R1 quick-xml below 0.41.0 (RUSTSEC-2026-0194/0195) Resolved by a lockfile bump in hyperpolymath/panic-attack#231

R1 stays as the worked example. It was planned as a three-repository upstream fix, and turned out to need only cargo update -p zbus_xml --precise 5.2.1.

Placement and scope

  • Resolved means clear in every repository checked so far. It is not an estate-wide claim, because the affected lists are not a full census.
  • The page does not direct per-repository counts into a Debtfile. That format is A2ML, which is retired, and it has no deed mapping yet.
  • The owner suggested .git-private-farm if the list were private. It holds only public advisory facts, and that repository cannot be attached to this session, so it lives here.

Verification

  • Versions, dependency requirements and feature tables were checked against crates.io. Advisory texts were read from the local RustSec database.
  • Both workarounds were tested by resolving eframe 0.36.2 with each feature set:
    • Without accesskit, the zbus chain is absent.
    • Without winit/default, or with winit's crossfont backend, ttf-parser is absent.
  • The documented cargo tree --target all --workspace --all-features checks were run. The quick-xml check names zbus_xml 5.1.0 in panic-attack's pre-fix lockfile.
  • The recursive lockfile census loop was run over echidna, panic-attack and standards.
  • Both files render with Asciidoctor 2.0.26 at --failure-level WARN with no warnings. scripts/check-canonical-names.sh passes.

Known red checks

governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline and scan / Hypatia Neurosymbolic Analysis fail on main too. They reject .github/workflows/actions.lock format v0.0.3, which this PR does not touch. The fix belongs in Hypatia's lockfile parser; see the comment on this PR.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

https://claude.ai/code/session_01Jma5ixtpeZyJRmfoSsC98u

Records dependency advisories that no estate repository can clear alone
because the fix must ship upstream first, with the release that unblocks
each one so a re-check is a single crates.io lookup.

Watching:
- W1: zvariant, zbus_names, zvariant_derive unmaintained
  (RUSTSEC-2026-0370/0371/0372), via eframe -> accesskit -> atspi ->
zbus 5. Unblocks when atspi moves to zbus 6.
- W2: ttf-parser unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2026-0192), via winit ->
  sctk-adwaita -> ab_glyph.
- W3: unsafe-libyaml unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2024-0449), via serde_yaml.
Locally fixable by moving to serde-saphyr, listed because it recurs.

Resolved:
- R1: quick-xml 0.38 (RUSTSEC-2026-0194/0195), cleared by a lockfile
bump of zbus_xml to 5.2.1 and wayland-scanner to 0.31.11. Kept as the
worked example of checking the newest compatible release before
  planning an upstream fix.

governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline is red, and the failure is not from this PR.

This PR adds one AsciiDoc file. The gate's two kept findings are both on .github/workflows/actions.lock, which this PR does not touch:

invalid_actions_lock (workflow_audit, high):
  Invalid .github/workflows/actions.lock: {:line, 4, {:unsupported_version, "v0.0.3"}}
invalid_actions_lock (workflow_hardening, high):
  actions.lock failed closed: {:line, 4, {:unsupported_version, "v0.0.3"}}

The same job fails the same way on main at b3ce78e, the base of this PR, in run 39340237981. It is also red on #1309 and #1310.

Why it can't be fixed from here: the Hypatia scanner, built at hyperpolymath/hypatia HEAD, does not accept lockfile format v0.0.3, which gh actions-lock writes. The lockfile is tool-owned and must not be hand-edited. The apply-baseline test from #1239 and #1305 also refuses an invalid_actions_lock acknowledgement in the baseline. So the fix belongs in Hypatia's lockfile parser. I found no open PR here that fixes it.

Once Hypatia accepts v0.0.3, a re-run of this job should pass with no change to this PR.

Review comments at @docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc:
- Around line 53-55: Update the Cargo.lock scan loop to use a crate variable in
the grep pattern instead of hard-coding “zvariant”, allowing callers to search
for any crate while preserving the repository-name output.
- Line 147: Update the quick-xml version guidance in the upstream dependency
watch documentation to cover every version below 0.41.0, including 0.40, or
explicitly state that exact affected range while preserving the existing cargo
audit context.
- Around line 29-30: Update the procedure around the *Unblocking release* lookup
to verify every release gate in the dependency chain: atspi,
accesskit_atspi_common, accesskit_unix, accesskit_winit, egui-winit, and eframe.
Require each gate’s newest release dependency requirement to be checked before
considering the entry unblocked, rather than stopping after checking one crate.
- Around line 115-119: Update the W3 entry’s status and placement so a locally
remediable advisory is not marked as upstream-blocked; move it to the
local-remediation/resolved workflow, or explicitly define this exception in the
scope and status rules while preserving the existing replacement guidance.
- Line 22: Update the Debtfile reference in the documentation to use the
per-repository machine-readable path `.machine_readable/Debtfile.a2ml` instead
of the specification path `docs/DEBTFILE-SPEC.adoc`, while preserving the
surrounding explanation.

Review follow-ups on the upstream dependency watch list:

- Per-repo counts no longer point at .machine_readable/Debtfile.a2ml.
A2ML is retired and must not gain new entries, and the Debtfile has no
deed mapping yet, so the page now says not to record these advisories
  there.
- W1: the zbus 5 chain is present only with the `accesskit` feature,
which eframe enables by default and egui-winit leaves opt-in. Building
eframe without `accesskit` drops the chain at the cost of screen-reader
support; recorded as a local workaround.
- W2: sctk-adwaita and ab_glyph come from winit's `wayland-csd-adwaita`,
  enabled through eframe's default `winit/default`. Disabling eframe's
defaults and re-enabling the needed features drops ttf-parser at the
cost of Adwaita client-side decorations; recorded as a local
  workaround.

Both workarounds were checked by resolving eframe 0.36.2 with each
feature set: without `accesskit` the lockfile holds no zvariant, zbus,
atspi-common or accesskit_unix; without `winit/default` it holds no
ttf-parser, sctk-adwaita or ab_glyph.

watch documentation so Resolved means clear for every repository that has been
checked, not merely one remediated repository. Alternatively, keep the advisory
open until the estate-wide follow-up is complete, and ensure the wording aligns
with the existing Known affected caveat and affected repository status entries.
- Around line 109-112: Qualify the feature-based workaround description to state
that disabling eframe default features only works when no other dependency
re-enables winit/default through feature unification. Add a verification step
using cargo tree -e features -i sctk-adwaita, and only describe the workaround
as effective when the relevant Adwaita and W2 features are absent.

Second review round on the upstream dependency watch list:

- Define *Resolved* as clear in every repository checked so far, not
estate-wide, matching the "not a full census" caveat. W3 resolves
only once every known affected repository is fixed.
- W1 and W2: an opt-in feature limits which binaries compile the
chain, but `cargo audit` reads Cargo.lock, which Cargo resolves with
every feature on, so the audit reports the advisory on every build.
- W2 workaround: Cargo merges features across the graph, so it holds
only if nothing else turns `winit/default` back on; check with
  `cargo tree -e features -i sctk-adwaita`.
- R1: the two update commands fix only the zbus_xml and
  wayland-scanner parents; run `cargo tree -i quick-xml@<version>`
  first.

Both cargo tree commands were run: the sctk-adwaita check finds the
crate under eframe defaults and nothing under the workaround feature
set; the quick-xml check on panic-attack's pre-fix lockfile names
zbus_xml 5.1.0 as the parent.

Third review round on the upstream dependency watch list:

- W1 cause: only zvariant became zbus 6's `wire` module; zbus_names
became the `names` module and zbus now provides the zvariant_derive
  macros (RUSTSEC-2026-0370/0371/0372 texts).
- W1 and W2 dates are the RustSec `date` field, which is the report
date, so label them "reported" rather than "issued".
- Link the watch list from 3-practice/SECURITY-ADVISORIES.adoc so it is
reachable from the existing advisory log.

Fourth review round on the upstream dependency watch list:

- The estate census loop now recurses into each clone, so repositories
that keep Rust workspaces below the root (standards has seven nested
Cargo.lock files) are no longer skipped.
- Every cargo tree check uses `--target all --workspace`; by default
cargo tree shows only the host platform and current member, so a
Linux-only dependency can look absent on another host.
- W1 workaround and bump action name the directly depended-on crate,
  `eframe` or a standalone `egui-winit`.

Checked: the recursive loop finds nested lockfiles such as
echidna/fuzz/Cargo.lock; both cargo tree commands with the new flags
resolve against eframe 0.36.2.

Fifth review round on the upstream dependency watch list:

- Every cargo tree check adds `--all-features`; without it a crate
behind an opt-in feature (such as a `gui` feature) can look absent
even though `cargo audit` finds it in Cargo.lock.
- W1 gates add zbus-lockstep, zbus-lockstep-macros and zbus_xml, which
atspi-common pulls in and which reach the retired crates on their own.
- W2 workaround gains a second option: keep Adwaita decorations through
  winit's `wayland-csd-adwaita-crossfont` (FreeType + fontconfig) instead
of ab_glyph. The confirmation check now looks for ttf-parser itself.

Checked: with eframe defaults off and a direct winit 0.30.13 dependency
on `wayland-csd-adwaita-crossfont`, the lockfile keeps sctk-adwaita and
crossfont but has no ab_glyph or ttf-parser; the documented ttf-parser
check finds nothing. The R1 check with `--all-features` names zbus_xml
5.1.0 as quick-xml 0.38.4's parent in panic-attack's pre-fix lockfile.

Sixth review round on the upstream dependency watch list:

- W3: `noyalib` releases before 0.0.53 carry RUSTSEC-2026-0333, a
denial-of-service vulnerability (patched >= 0.0.53 per the RustSec
database), so the replacement guidance now sets that floor.
  serde-saphyr has no RustSec advisories.
- W1: an unmaintained advisory makes `cargo audit` exit 0 only by
default; an audit.toml that denies `unmaintained` or `warnings`
turns it into a non-zero exit.

… support) (#1315)

## Problem
`governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline` is red on `main` (`b3ce78e`,
run 39340237981) and on every open PR, including #1309, #1310 and #1311.
The only blocking findings are:

```
invalid_actions_lock (workflow_audit, high):     {:line, 4, {:unsupported_version, "v0.0.3"}}
invalid_actions_lock (workflow_hardening, high): actions.lock failed closed: {:line, 4, {:unsupported_version, "v0.0.3"}}
```

The baseline job does not build Hypatia HEAD. Both
`governance-reusable.yml` and `hypatia-scan-reusable.yml` default
`hypatia-ref` to the vetted SHA `51ab6496…` (2026-10-01), and that
commit's lockfile parser accepts only `v0.0.2`. `gh actions-lock` now
writes `v0.0.3`. The lockfile is tool-owned, and this finding is
deliberately not baselinable (#1239, #1305), so the scanner pin is what
has to move.

## Change
Both `hypatia-ref` defaults move from
`51ab6496bf47e30a0576d503df31fec30f3cfe56` to
`aa34a4cc6ba39d873710ff39763fdb9cde715f9d`. They move together, as their
descriptions require. `aa34a4cc` is hypatia `main` after
hyperpolymath/hypatia#938, which adds proper `v0.0.3` support, including
the one field `v0.0.3` introduces (the optional per-dependency
`hostname`). Unknown versions still fail closed.

No `uses:` ref changes, so `actions.lock` is untouched.

## Blast radius (measured, not assumed)
The bump carries every Hypatia commit since `51ab6496` (23 of them,
including the `research_extensions` rules and
hyperpolymath/hypatia#922's finding-shape change), and a pin move broke
every caller once before (hyperpolymath/hypatia#895). So I replayed the
`validate-hypatia-baseline` step locally at both pins on three repos:
scan, path relativisation, then `apply-baseline.sh` with
`BLOCKING_THRESHOLD=info`.

| Repo | Kept at `51ab6496` | Kept at `aa34a4cc` | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| standards (`d55304a`) | 2 × `invalid_actions_lock` | **0** | gate
passes |
| echidna | 2 × `invalid_actions_lock`, 1 `DependencyPinning` | same 3 |
none* |
| hypatia | 2 × `invalid_actions_lock` + 28 pre-existing (RE001/4/5,
WH013) | the 28 | −2 |

(The table leaves out `GS002`/`GS005`, which come from my detached local
checkouts.)

- On all three repos the raw findings only *lose* `invalid_actions_lock`
and the derived `DependencyPinning`. There is no new finding type and no
severity change.
- All emitted severities stay inside `hypatia-scan-reusable.yml`'s
accepted set. The new `support`/`evidence`/`level` finding fields are
additive, and the only `.level` the reusable reads is the SARIF one.
- \*echidna's lockfile now parses, but it has two real dangling edges
(`slsa-framework/slsa-github-generator@f7dd8c54…` and
`hyperpolymath/panic-attack@b689a74d…` are listed under `workflows:`
with no top-level record, the startup-failure case
`scripts/close-lock.sh` documents). That is an echidna repair, not
something this PR changes.

## Checks run locally
- `scripts/tests/governance-reusable-contract-test.sh`: PASS
- `scripts/tests/hypatia-blocking-gate-test.sh`: PASS
- `scripts/tests/apply-baseline-test.sh`: 52 passed, 0 failed
- `scripts/tests/check-workflow-duplicate-keys-test.sh`: 17 passed, 0
failed with mikefarah yq v4.47.2 (checksum-verified). It fails 13/4 on
`main` too when only the Python `yq` is on PATH.
`scripts/check-workflow-duplicate-keys.sh` on both files: clean.
- `actionlint` 1.7.7 on both files: output identical to `main`.
- `yq '.on.workflow_call.inputs."hypatia-ref".default'` → `aa34a4cc…` in
both files.

## After merge
Open PRs (#1309, #1310, #1311) need `main` merged into them. Re-running
their failed jobs won't help, because a re-run reuses the PR's old merge
commit, which still carries `51ab6496`.

|Local workaround |Turn off the `accesskit` feature on whichever crate the
repository depends on directly: `eframe`, or `egui-winit` when it is used on
its own. That drops the whole chain, at the cost of screen-reader support.

P2 Badge Disable eframe defaults before removing AccessKit

When the affected repository uses eframe with its defaults, accesskit cannot be turned off individually: Cargo automatically enables dependency defaults and unifies enabled features, so merely omitting accesskit from a feature list leaves the vulnerable chain present. The Cargo Book requires default-features = false on the dependency declaration; spell that out and tell maintainers to re-enable the other required eframe features, as the W2 workaround already does, or this workaround can leave cargo audit unchanged.

Stacked on #1311, which adds `docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc`. The
base is that PR's branch; retarget this PR to `main` once #1311 merges
(GitHub does this automatically when the base branch is deleted on
merge).

## What

[hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234](hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234)
(merged 2026-10-20) replaced `serde_yaml` with `serde-saphyr` 2.0.
RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is now clear in every known affected repository, so:

- W3 moves out of *Local remediation*, which now reads "No entries."
- It becomes **R2 (was W3)** under *Resolved*. Keeping "was W3"
preserves references, including panic-attack#234's description.

## What the entry now records

These are the parts of the fix that weren't obvious from the advisory:

- **Minimum Rust version.** serde-saphyr 1.2 and later declare Rust
1.89. 1.1.0 declares none but only compiles on 1.88 or later
(let-chains, `is_multiple_of`); this was measured on 1.85.0. noyalib
releases after 0.0.15 need 1.86 or later. The noyalib releases that
build on 1.85 also predate RUSTSEC-2026-0333. panic-attack therefore
raised its floor from 1.85.0 to 1.89 instead of pinning a frozen
release.
- **Resource limits.** serde-saphyr's default parse budget (250k nodes,
1M events, 64 MiB of scalar text) rejected YAML reports from large
scans. Scale the node, event and scalar-byte limits with the input
length, and keep the alias limits at their defaults.
- **Checked clear:** `hyperpolymath/echidna` (no lockfile holds
`unsafe-libyaml`). This is not a full census.
- **Follow-up for other repositories:** run `cargo tree … -i
unsafe-libyaml` to find the parent, then swap it as above.

## Checks

- `asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN` renders the file with no warnings,
and the table count is unchanged (5).
- The commit message passes `.githooks/commit-msg`.

hyperpolymath pushed a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
#1320 merged as an empty commit (6f96eab): #1311 was squash-merged, and
merging main back into #1320's branch resolved the conflict on
docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc to main's side, dropping the edit.
main therefore still lists W3 under Local remediation.

Reapply the edit unchanged. hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234 replaced
serde_yaml with serde-saphyr 2.0, so RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is clear in every
known affected repository: W3 leaves Local remediation ("No entries.")
and becomes R2 (was W3) under Resolved, recording the MSRV constraint,
the parse-budget scaling, echidna checked clear, and the follow-up
command for other repositories.

Rendered with asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN: no warnings.

hyperpolymath added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
## Why this exists

#1320 merged as an **empty commit** (`6f96eab`), so `main` still lists
W3 under *Local remediation*.

How it happened: #1311 was squash-merged. Merging `main` back into
#1320's branch then conflicted on `docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc`.
That merge commit, `d952134`, resolved the conflict by taking `main`'s
side, which left the branch identical to `main`. This PR reapplies the
same edit, unchanged, on top of the latest `main`; `main`'s copy of the
file is otherwise identical to the one the edit was made against.

## What

[hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234](hyperpolymath/panic-attack#234)
(merged 2026-10-20) replaced `serde_yaml` with `serde-saphyr` 2.0, so
RUSTSEC-2024-0449 is clear in every known affected repository.

- W3 leaves *Local remediation*, which now reads "No entries."
- It becomes **R2 (was W3)** under *Resolved*. The entry records:
- **Minimum Rust version:** no maintained safe-Rust serde YAML crate
builds on 1.85, and the noyalib releases that do predate
RUSTSEC-2026-0333.
- **Resource limits:** scaling serde-saphyr's parse budget for large
machine-written documents.
  - **Checked clear:** `hyperpolymath/echidna`.
- **Follow-up:** a `cargo tree -i unsafe-libyaml` command for any other
repository.

## Checks

- The diff against `main` is this one file, +33 / −18, and nothing else.
- `asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN` renders it with no warnings.
- The commit message passes `.githooks/commit-msg`.

**Merge note:** if `main` moves before merge, please update this branch
with a rebase, or a merge that keeps this side of the file. A plain
"merge main" that takes `main`'s side reproduces the empty merge.
