KOMUNE patches on top of upstream v5.0.4, rebuilt from fresh v5.0.4 (diff to fixers/5.0.3 = upstream v5.0.3..v5.0.4 diff; diff to v5.0.4 = the patches below). Every fix except the placeholder (6) was removal-proofed against v5.0.4 through F2's function suites (komune-io/fixers-f2#166).

1. JSON parse/type errors return 400 instead of 500

A malformed or wrongly-typed JSON body otherwise answers 500. Upstream 5.0.4 (spring-cloud#1429) only improved the error message, still 500. Getting a 400 needs a chain, because each layer swallows or wraps the error:

 • JsonMessageConverter: a Jackson DatabindException on a JSON request becomes ResponseStatusException(400); upstream logs and returns null. isJsonContentType checks the three header spellings.
 • SmartCompositeMessageConverter: lets that ResponseStatusException through; upstream catches everything, logs a warning and tries the next converter (upstream Message conversion exceptions ignored in SmartCompositeMessageConverter spring-cloud/spring-cloud-function#901).
 • SimpleFunctionRegistry (input conversion, Mono and Flux): rethrows it as-is; upstream wraps it in IllegalStateException("Failed to convert input"), i.e. a 500.
 • spring-cloud-function-context/pom.xml: spring-web no longer optional, since ResponseStatusException lives there.
 • Tests: PojoFunctionIntegrationTests.testMalformedJsonRejectsWithJacksonError / testScalarStringRejectsWithJacksonError (new in 5.0.4) assert the logged 500 → @Disabled.

Removing any one of the three code links: "type-mismatched JSON body is rejected with 400" returns 500.

2. Typed list deserialization (SimpleFunctionRegistry)

When a JSON array is posted to a single-item function, the framework splits it and calls the function per element. Upstream parses the array as an untyped Collection; fine for Jackson, but kotlinx.serialization needs the element type, so it is parsed as List<T> from the function's input type.

Removing it: 23 test failures.

3. Stream errors are propagated, not silently dropped (FunctionWebRequestProcessingHelper)

Upstream applies onErrorContinue to a Flux result: a failing element is logged and skipped and the client gets 200 with a truncated list. Removed so the error reaches the client.

 • Test: HttpGetIntegrationTests.errorJson asserts the partial ["foo"] body → @Disabled.

Removing it: "an error mid-stream is propagated rather than silently truncated" fails.

4. OPTIONS requests fall through (FunctionWebRequestProcessingHelper)

Browsers send an OPTIONS preflight before cross-origin calls; upstream tries to route it to a function and fails with "not supported". Returning null lets normal routing (CORS) answer it.

Removing it: "OPTIONS falls through instead of failing" fails.

5. F2's Kotlin suspend functions are recognized (KotlinLambdaToFunctionAutoConfiguration)

Upstream detects Kotlin suspend lambdas by an exact generic-parameter count and a type-name match on the lambda type itself. F2's DSL types (F2Function, F2Supplier, F2Consumer) declare fewer parameters and are sub-interfaces of the Kotlin function types, so they are never registered. Relaxed counts plus a super-interface check.

Removing it: 80 test failures, most F2 functions missing from the catalog.

6. kotlinx.serialization mapper hook (ContextFunctionCatalogAutoConfiguration, commented out)

Active in F2: spring.cloud.function.preferred-json-mapper=kSerialization selects F2's KSerializationMapper. That class only exists in F2, so here it stays commented out; a no-op kept so both copies stay comparable.

Removed

Output-side ResponseStatusException rethrow in SimpleFunctionRegistry: nothing throws it on the output path since v5.0.3; all tests stay green without it.

Verification

spring-cloud-function-context 222 tests and spring-cloud-function-web 199 tests pass (28 skipped: upstream's 25 + the 3 KOMUNE-disabled above).

KOMUNE patches reapplied on v5.0.4: SimpleFunctionRegistry (typed collection deserialization, ResponseStatusException rethrow on input/output), JsonMessageConverter (DatabindException -> 400), SmartCompositeMessageConverter, FunctionWebRequestProcessingHelper, KotlinLambdaToFunctionAutoConfiguration, ContextFunctionCatalogAutoConfiguration (kSerialization kept commented) and the spring-web optional dependency in the context pom.

Rebuilt as fresh v5.0.4 plus the KOMUNE hunks; for every file the diff to fixers/5.0.3 equals the upstream v5.0.3..v5.0.4 diff, and the diff to v5.0.4 equals the KOMUNE hunks. Upstream churn landed in SimpleFunctionRegistry, ContextFunctionCatalogAutoConfiguration and JsonMessageConverter, outside the patched methods.

Tests: HttpGetIntegrationTests.errorJson stays @disabled; the new PojoFunctionIntegrationTests malformed/scalar JSON tests are @disabled because KOMUNE returns 400 instead of a logged 500. context 222 and web 199 tests pass.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update JSON input conversion and error propagation, web request handling, and Kotlin suspend-lambda recognition. They also make spring-web non-optional and add a commented-out mapper selection branch.

Changes

Conversion Error Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
JSON input conversion
spring-cloud-function-context/src/main/java/.../SimpleFunctionRegistry.java, spring-cloud-function-context/src/main/java/.../JsonMessageConverter.java, spring-cloud-function-context/pom.xml
Collection inputs are deserialized using the function’s generic input type. JSON parsing failures with a Jackson DatabindException cause now produce a ResponseStatusException with HTTP 400. The spring-web dependency is no longer optional.
Conversion error passthrough
spring-cloud-function-context/src/main/java/.../SmartCompositeMessageConverter.java, spring-cloud-function-context/src/main/java/.../SimpleFunctionRegistry.java
ResponseStatusException is rethrown by the message converter and by Mono and Flux conversion handlers. Other exceptions retain their existing handling.
Web request handling
spring-cloud-function-web/src/main/java/.../FunctionWebRequestProcessingHelper.java, spring-cloud-function-web/src/test/java/.../PojoFunctionIntegrationTests.java, spring-cloud-function-web/src/test/java/.../flux/HttpGetIntegrationTests.java
OPTIONS requests return no function from findFunction. Flux errors propagate during collection. Three integration tests are disabled with reasons that describe the changed error handling.

Kotlin Suspend-Lambda Recognition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Suspend-lambda parameter checks
spring-cloud-function-context/src/main/java/.../KotlinLambdaToFunctionAutoConfiguration.java
Suspend supplier, consumer, and function recognition accepts the specified additional parameter counts. Type matching also checks directly implemented interfaces for parameterized types.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddea0

Two narrow edge cases remain. Some ordinary two-argument functions may be registered as suspend functions, and some malformed JSON array inputs may return 500 instead of 400. Neither blocks the main paths, but both are worth addressing before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddea0

The inspected changes do not establish a new authorization bypass or attacker-selected deserialization class. They do change failed-request behavior and dependency propagation. Deployment-specific error responses, retries, and effects completed before a failure remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

 • inferred — The effective exposure is applications using the changed registry and converter paths, including HTTP callers receiving aggregated function results. Stateful effects and downstream service privileges belong to the deployed functions; the inspected framework changes do not identify a tenant, data store, or environment-wide compromise path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

 • observed — OPTIONS now returns null before function lookup. MVC returns no function handler for a null selection, and the reactive mapping filters it out. This rejects the proposed OPTIONS-to-function invocation path, but does not prove how authentication or CORS is configured in a deployment.
 • observed — Request payloads reach JSON deserialization, but the new collection target comes from the function's registered input type. The existing separate content-type class-selection path checks deserializableTypes membership before loading a named class; the new collection hunk does not replace that check with unrestricted request-selected class loading.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

 • inferred — Failing aggregate responses provide clearer failure signaling, not transactional execution. Effects completed before a publisher error are not rolled back by this helper. Repetition could duplicate application-owned effects if callers retry non-idempotent functions, but neither such functions nor a retry policy were established in the supplied deployment evidence.

Hardening Proposals

 • proposed — Replace the disabled old-contract assertions with active checks for qualifying 400 responses and terminal Flux failures, including error-body redaction. For stateful functions, explicitly define retry and idempotency expectations rather than treating a failed aggregate response as proof that no effects occurred.

Map typed collection conversion failures to HTTP 400.

JacksonMapper.doFromJson wraps invalid element deserialization in IllegalStateException. This direct collection conversion occurs before JsonMessageConverter, so the failure can bypass its ResponseStatusException(HttpStatus.BAD_REQUEST, ...) mapping and reach the HTTP layer as a 500. Apply the same input-error mapping to this path.

Resolve the implemented Function2 signature before registration.

When a bean factory method returns a parameterized concrete class that directly implements Function2, findType preserves that concrete type. The new interface check then accepts it as a suspend function, but types still contains the concrete class's arguments. A two-argument ordinary Function2 can therefore be registered as Function<Flux<A>, Flux<B>>, even though its invocation signature is different.

Resolve the implemented function signature before classification. Require the continuation checks for the resolved signature. Apply the same resolution to the new supplier and consumer branches.

Nothing constructs a ResponseStatusException on the output conversion path since v5.0.3; removing both catch blocks keeps the context and web tests green (and F2's function suites).
